There is a hot case which you can see what is being cooled down. The smell is always amazing. The bread loaves are great. The cakes are good, not overly sweet too. If you're lucky, they might have bags of cake scraps for sale. Try the egg tarts too, both versions are delicious, but the Macau is better. The people are always helpful and nice. This review is only for the following items I have had recently: Chinese cupcake wrapped in paper Pineapple bun (aka Bor Lor Bao) Sesame bun with walnuts Egg tart These were all delicious. The Chinese cupcake wrapped in paper was one of the best I've had. It was spongy, moist and just the right amount of sweetness. Pineapple bun is the Hong Kong style buns. The top is crispy while the rest of the bun is soft. Sesame bun was soft and filled with good amount of sesame inside. Egg tart was also good. Although the crust could be flakier, the egg custard part was very good. I haven't tried everything in the store but what I have tried recently, I liked it a lot. I will be back to try other items. I come to Green Wheat Field at least a few times a month since it's a nice local bakery that's always clean and well stocked with various breads, but I specifically always come for their black sesame bread since it's the best I've had anywhere! They're really generous with the filling and don't skimp, which is what keeps me coming back :D My husband enjoys their cha siu bao, and they always seem to have it fresh out of the oven whenever we stop by. The cashiers here are also super sweet - the black sesame bread sells out fast, so I usually call in ahead of time to ask if they have any and they'll set aside a few for me until I arrive, which I really appreciate :) Little things like that go a long way. I don't come to this area often but every time we are driving out here, I will stop by to buy some bread. Pork sung roll bread and Portuguese egg tart are the most buy for me! Also their milk tea. Ordered a custom fox-face chocolate birthday cake for my daughter and was extremely disappointed with what we received. What arrived was basically a regular round cake with a small animal topper placed on top -- not a fox-face shaped custom cake as expected. The colors were pastel pink/white instead of realistic fox colors, and the overall appearance looked very different from what was discussed. The inside was even more disappointing. We ordered a chocolate cake, but the cake contained large vanilla cake sections mixed with chocolate layers. The bakery later said they did this because white cream could not fully cover chocolate cake, which honestly made no sense. Many bakeries successfully make fully frosted chocolate cakes without inserting thick vanilla cake layers. The cake also had uneven layer thickness, uneven cream distribution, and inconsistent colors/flavors throughout. For a premium-priced custom cake, this felt poorly executed and misleading. If I wanted a regular cake with a topper, I could have made one myself for a fraction of the cost. This cake was for my daughter's birthday, and we were so disappointed that we barely ate it. About 90% of the cake is still sitting in our fridge. I normally do not leave negative reviews, but customers ordering custom cakes should know what to expect. read more

The Green Wheat Field is a store that I have passed for many years and never stopped in. I always remembered it because it was one of the few shops where I could actually read the name of the store with my limited grasp of written Mandarin. Alas, I should have taken Saturday Chinese School more seriously. As for the store itself, the reviews speak for themself as I found their baked good to be delicious. I got 3 regular and 3 portuguese egg tarts and I found both to be good but I prefer the portuguese ones so I give those the nod. The prices are solid as well and I did notice that their bakery seemed to be humming along and churning out bread even in the afternoon. It is a low key no frills, pay with card if purchase under 10 dollar kind of place with a superb gluten game. I will be back. read more

From kids to grandparents- they cakes are desired by a wide rage of ages and tastebuds We usually order and pay ahead of the time. They have a great points system so you should def sign up and take advantage of it. There's usually a lot of street parking right our front so it's very convenient. Pastries taste good and are very decently priced. Loved the Portuguese egg tarts and regular egg tarts. They have a decent amount of savory buns here too, which I feel is lacking at other bakeries. Tried the crab and corn bun, and it was tasty. Lots of ingredients put into the bun. I also got a tiger roll in the refrigerated section but it was really oddly tasting. We were visiting in the area and thought we'd stop by for some pastries. We got: ham and pork roll and bun, taro bun, cocktail bun, HK style egg tart, and durian crepe slice. Everything was delicious. The bread was so soft and the fillings had plenty of flavor. The durian crepe was well balanced with the durian flavor and the cream in between the crepe slices. If we lived in the area we would definitely be coming here super often. The staff was friendly (they also speak Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and probably more languages which is so neat and allows for great communication) and easy to get to from the hotel nearby. I love the amount of selection here and the prices are great. I didn't try the cakes because they didn't look too great but I had the purple yam, caterpillar and black sesame loaf. The yeast smell is pretty strong and really came through in the purple yam flavor wise. It made me a bit concerned to try anything else. When I opened the bag of black sesame loaf, it was also pretty strong but the flavor of black sesame did come through. It was so soft and pillowy. read more

Stepped into a cute, cozy, and clean bakery. They had a diverse selection of freshly baked goods available that Sunday afternoon I dropped by. Bought a couple of Pineapple buns and (4) Egg Tarts. Prices were quite reasonable. More importantly, both items tasted darn good. Definitely, one of the better Pineapple buns that I've ever tried. Same for the Egg Tarts. I don't find myself in the San Gabriel area very often. Chances are that whenever I'm in the area, I will absolutely be visiting Green Wheat Field Bakery. There is a small discount on Wednesdays (10% off) when you enter your phone number for rewards. The portion tends to be on the lighter side with some pastries, but it makes for it to be more guilt free. It is not too sweet or heavy for the most part vs other bakeries in which you feel like you need to eat the item in multiple sittings (like 85C's taro/ube buns). While my mom doesn't prefer this bakery, I like their pork floss rolls which apparently is a favorite that even OC people drive out for! read more

This place might not have as many as pastry selections compared to other bakeries in town, BUT their bread loaves and slices are delicious and amazing! There are a lot of choices for sliced and non-sliced bread to choose from. Black Sesame Sliced Bread: it is soft and chewy. Also, you can actually taste the black sesame flavor. Love it, and I will definitely try the unsliced one next time. Walnut Raisin Bread Loaf: My favorite out of all! It got a great subtle sweet and yeast aroma. And this bread got a malty taste with tons of walnuts and raisins rolled in. Definitely worth a shot. Pork Sung Roll: my dad had this and he said it was great, but not amazing. However the price and the filling for this bread is unbeatable. Overall, this place is affordable and has a great pastry, cake, and bread selection. Macau Egg Tart - Honestly blew me away, very reminiscent of the egg tart from KFC in Taiwan (weird comparison I know, but it's really really good). I feel that Green Wheat Field Bakery is lowkey one of the best bakeries around the area. It's definitely not a household name since I think this is the only location and the bakery itself isn't that big but it has so many options from bread to dessert. There are so many different options of bread also from pork sung, bbq pork, red bean, sea salt and others. There are even many options of loaf of bread (toast) which is so soft from butter, pork sung, salty, etc. I'm not just impressed with the many options but taste wise, it's pretty on par or better than other bakery chains in the area. The portion is also good. Price wise, it's the same as others which definitely makes it comparable. Staff is friendly here. You do feel like you've stepped into a farm when you visit this bakery. After browsing around the store, I decided to leave with one of each bun below. - BBQ Pork - Corn & Ham - Pineapple - Custard - Red Bean - Coconut - Sea Salt - Yogurt Based on feedback, all of them tasted good!
