**MAJOR HEALTH HAZARD** I usually dont even post reviews, but this I had to. I purchased a fresh concha from the bakery here yesterday. I took a large bite and swallowed it, only to look down and find that the entire interior is completely infested and riddled with dead insects baked directly into the dough. I am experiencing severe nausea from ingesting this contaminated product. When I called corporate customer service to report this severe quality control failure, the representative completely stonewalled me and REFUSED to open an official risk management report. I have safely preserved the physical evidence and have filed a formal complaint with the Orange County Health Care Agency (Environmental Health Division) to investigate this facility's flour supply. I was excited to visit the newly renovated Northgate for the first time because I grew up shopping there. I walked into the store around 8:37 p.m. and headed to the taqueria. There were two employees cleaning, but despite standing there waiting for about 12 minutes, neither acknowledged me or offered to help. That's when i saw the sign closed At 9:00 p.m, even though all the food was still available. It made me feel like they simply didn't want to serve me. It's a shame because the remodel looks great, and I was looking forward to coming back to a store that brought back so many memories. Northgate is the go to Mexican grocery store. They have a fantastic seafood selection including a ceviche section with batches of different types of ceviche! If you're interested in something sweet you can't go wrong with choosing something form their Pan Dulce (sweet bread) section. If you're looking for any particular specialty ingredients for Mexican food, you'll most likely find it here. The employees here have always been helpful, which is a good thing because this grocery store is huge. The parking lot has lots of space and is located in La Habra Town Center. Northgate is probably the premiere full service Hispanic supermarket in SoCal. This store is one of their flagships with a large food court and deli and butcher counters along with a tortilleria and bakery. It's well appointed and airy and service is friendly and helpful. Produce is good and they have almost everything you need. They had a meat counter, a cheese/chorizo counter, a guacamole station, fish counter. Everything you need for a party. I came here for lunch and went to their "guisados" section which is self serve prepared foods. They had an assortment of mexican dishes including spare ribs, nopales, calabasas, enchiladas, chille rellenos, mole poblano, chorizo con papas, steak ranchera etc. You pay by the pound which I think was 9.99/lb. I had the mole and pork belly chicharrone, papas con chorizo and calabasas. Probably rate the food as a 3 but it's gets an extra star for being convenient. I don't frequent Northgate too often but when I do, I usually go to the Placentia location due to convenience. However, I was on the other side of town and wanted to stop by to grab some snacks for the Super Bowl. I didn't explore too much of the store but just wanted to pick up what I needed and leave. I got a huge bag of chips, two little containers of salsa, and a tres leches cake. I really like this location over the others I've been to because it's really clean, very spacious, and the people working are extremely nice. This location is a little out of the way for me but I would come back because of how nice it is compared to its counterparts. When you order ceviche, make sure you get it in the cups not the tray. The young girl serving it in the cups was making sure to spill out excess juice. The senora put mine in a tray. I ordered 3.5lb of ceviche but as you can see below only got 2lb 13.5oz and the rest was all juice. Actually she weighed it while filling it, stopped at 3.5, added a second foil tray, weighed it again at 3.65 and then put the price sticker on. That's a decent amount of ceviche I'm missing out on for my family and I shouldn't have paid for (almost $8 worth)! Super annoyed! Watch them while they serve. Also my mom got a carne asada burrito. 5/11/24 Oh my golly I love this market!! Met up with my cousin here to drop off some cherimoyas for her & her beloved Jeff. Hubby & I weren't planning on shopping but what the heck, we're here, right? Didn't even have a chance to roam the aisles but a quick cursory look made me believe this place is magical. There's many departments that just add so much color to this market.There's of course the fresh produce--bought cilantro, tomatillos, limes, jalapeños & Serrano peppers to make guacamole sauce. Hubby bought shrimp ceviche. There's a full functional panaderia & a tortilleria indide & also cooked foods to order & take home or eat there. For this visit, I tried their carne asada torta, which was generously packed with meat, a thick slab of Queso Blanco, mayo, lettuce, fresh red onions, and pickled chili peppers. There are other meat choices for the tortas too - such as carnitas, chorizo, and milanesa. This hefty torta is too large for me to finish in one seating, and it's only $9.99! As well, they serve tacos starting at $1.99 each - a bargain considering what other fast-food joints offer. I appreciate the cleanliness and organization at the meat counter with someone calling the numbers. EXCEPT the conversations going on among cashiers and baggers. I've tried standing there and guiding them to bag my groceries. I even started a new system in which I put the bag on the band first and the groceries that go in that bag next. Today the young cashier and young man were so into their conversation my bags were put to the side and he started to bag improperly. My bolillos were with the cans. The soft apricots were under the bananas. I still come because the Northgate in Pico Rivera is a much smaller store.... But like they say in Mexico, "me están llenado el costal de piedritas." I usually go to this market for tamales and refreshes. The problem is that I pay $ 5.99 for the Large drink but it looks like I am buying $ 4.99 of Ice and $ 1.00 of drink. Even when I said no so much ice They fill the cup with more ice than the real drink. I tried La Mirada location and they do the same. They have to understand , customers paid for the drink not for the ice. I do have an ice maker at home. It will be nice They put less ice and more drink in the cup. Wish that all Northgate's were built the same but unfortunately they're not. This location, by far is the best one I've set foot in. Just wish it were closer to me but I'm willing to drive 25 mins to shop at this location. Parking can be issue on a busy day but if you're willing to just walk a little... there are plenty of spaces. This market is clean and organized. Loving the various offerings from fresh Agua Fresca's to fresh guacamole stand and bar of various tamales and salsas. I had not been by Gonzales market in a bit so decided to shop for a few items, as usual, the products are fresh and at a low price., I picked up some Mexican bread and Mexican cornbread, which was very good it's made differently than American cornbread. I would visit this establishment more often, but I live in Rowland Heights. It's a little drive but worth it. I appreciate good customer service in an establishment. It makes one want to come back again and again. I had a wonderful encounter with, one of the employees May was her name she was friendly and courteous and directed me to a product I was looking for. I have been shopping at Northgate for years and have never had issue with the meat but I bought 8lbs on Thursday of prepared Asada for a Father's Day dinner on Sunday. When we went to grill it, the meat smelled bad so we put back in the fridge so I could take it back to Northgate and complain. I took it back 2 days later and the manager and staff gave me the 3rd degree. As I explained I had families with kids and wasn't going to risk someone, especially a kid getting sick so I didn't grill it. The manager tells me I should of served it, no one would of complained. They ultimately would Not credit my credit card but gave me store credit. I had NO choice but to take the store credit but may not come back to this store again and will stick to Stater Brothers for meat read more

I will always be thankful to this Northgate market. Number one they have everything that I really really enjoy eating. The food is tasty warm and everything in there. I want to buy that's how wonderful they present their offerings. The ambience is colorful all the food looks like you wanna buy it all because it looks so good and the Champurrado is delicious. The vegetable and produce is always nice and clean and meat is always presentable and beautiful. Now why there's a soft spot is because they took really good care of us during Covid. Most of our shopping is done on-line and we simply go to the curbside pick-up area and then drive away. We also get Instacart and have groceries delivered directly to the house. But sometimes, going into a grocery store and smelling and feeling your produce and talking to a butcher is what is needed to make that special lunch or dinner. While we go to Stater Bros for most of our butcher counter meats, there's no comparison for seasoned and marinated meats and fish. Now, Northgate is a grocery store first and a Mexican market second. I would shop here for all my grocery needs if they had better prices and more sales. The mainstream grocery stores offer digital coupons or discounts with their apps, but Northgate doesn't. Vons/Albertsons, for example, even offers a $15.00 off digital coupon if you buy at least $15.00 worth of groceries. Walmart has overall lower prices, but overall lower quality, too. The fresh deli and cooked meat counter are great for last minute meals or family gatherings (or when it's my turn to make dinner ;) ). We often get several pounds of carnitas and chicharones for tacos and the guacamole salsa and salsa Roja mediamente and pico de gallo. The rice and beans are hot and ready and go well with the meats. There's a fish counter with fresh ceviche and, believe it or not, sushi! so we get that here, too. But the butcher counter is the real draw. You can get marinated Carne asada, pork al pastor, Pollo asado, you name it. And if you don't want your meat marinated, they have regular meat, too. They also have peeled and deveined and butterflied shrimp for shrimp tacos or fajitas either with or without seasoning. Of course, they have a tortilleria and we get freshly made tortillas for our tacos and quesadillas. Their pan dulces at their panaderia are okay. My wife still insists on going to Panaderia La Fama in ELA where she grew up for her conchas and elotes and can taste the difference between here and there, so we make the drive once a week. The store can get crowded, especially on weekends when families go grocery shopping together. I remember that as a kid my family and I went shopping together and I appreciate that some families take time to make something as mundane as grocery shopping a family experience. As such, the parking lot can get pretty packed. Not to mention there's Tierra Mia and other stores sharing the same lot. I expect it to get worse once the medical office building opens in a few months. My only other gripe with the parking is that there's no EV charging. I've run into neighbors and people from church shopping here and it's always a friendly and family experience. If you haven't read the history of the Gonzales family who founded the chain, it's a good read of dedication, hard work and pursuing the American dream all why staying focused on family. While not our primary market, it's our go-to for some specialty items or when I want to take the family out for some bonding time like when I grew up, as a kid. I love this place but I'm so bummed. I went there to pu some meat to grill. I told the butcher that I wanted "carne asada" and it was hard to understand her. Honestly this is a good location but in the evening when I'm ordering food for tacos, there was a gentlemen in front of me getting a family sized amount which took about 15 minutes. I have a bad knee but I patiently waited. A second worker came looked over at me and didn't ask if I needed help after waiting a long time. A group of 2 people showed up after me in the opposite side of the line and the same worker that saw my stand there ignoring me went to help them right away. I had to wait for her to help the family out which took a long time. Too bad it's so far away from me... but this Northgate is beautiful with more items such as a floral section compared to the ones I've been to in Santa Ana and surrounding cities. They have a worker monitoring shoppers to follow a strict social distancing protocol during the checkout process so everyone keeps their distance.
