Instead of going to my usual Korean market, I wanted to try something homemade and I'm so glad I did. All of their kimchi is made fresh just days prior, and they offer a great variety with different vegetables and sizes to choose from. It's a small market, but they also carry other Korean goodies, which is a nice bonus. There was a lot of hype about this kimchi spot so I decided to make the drive about 1 hour and 30 minutes each way. Honestly it was totally worth it. After trying their kimchi, I don't think I can go back to store bought kimchi anymore. I was a little worried about the language barrier since I don't speak Korean, but luckily their son works there full time and helped explain the different kimchi and their fermentation process. He was very knowledgeable and patient. It was really nice supporting a family business, and you can tell there is a lot of care and tradition behind their kimchi. We picked up two jars. The red kimchi is $15 and tastes just like the kimchi you get at a good Korean BBQ restaurant. It is very flavorful and pairs perfectly with grilled meat. Add some KBBQ, a fried egg, and rice and you have a great meal. The white kimchi is $19 and is lighter and refreshing. I enjoy pairing it with pork belly wraps because it balances the richness of the meat really well. It almost feels like a palate cleanser between bites. Both were absolutely delicious. The price is little higher but I prefer the taste of kimchi here. The whole "baek" kimchi is what I always get at this place. It has a bit of oyster taste, giving a richer flavor. I guess it's just a matter of preference. The one at Garden Grove has a more refreshing taste. Funny thing is, my fellow yelper now prefers the Garden Grove store. So we basically ended up swapping places for kimchi. This place also sells some side dishes (banchan), rice, frozen dumplings, and snacks. This place is great if you're looking for legit kimchi. The shop is located across the street from Knott's (you can see and hear people riding the coasters), with plenty of parking. The store itself is on the smaller side, but packed with a variety of kimchi and banchan to choose from. We were greeted by the owner who was super friendly, and provided a variety of recommendations. I ended up grabbing some kimchi, marinated crab, and pickled veggies, and everything was delicious. Before suggesting anything, he asked about my friend's age and gender--which caught me off guard. What does that have to do with kimchi preferences? I had no idea. After that, I asked what else he thought I should bring. He suggested either chili paste or bean paste, so I went with a 1/2 galon bean paste. I think my friend was really overwhelmed by the care package. My sister also swears that oyster kimchi is to die for--her friend's friend sometimes brings some over. I ran in here 10 minutes before closing, and the father and son were still so happy to help me out and did not rush me at all! I got the 1 gallon napa kimchi for $23. Honestly, I was hesitant to check this place out for the longest time because I was worried that the prices would be too high, but the prices here are fair for the quality you are getting. The kimchi was really fresh and tasted like restaurant quality (or even better). I don't usually like ripe kimchi that has fermented for too long, but it has been 3 weeks since purchasing that gallon jar, and I am still enjoying this kimchi!! Genuine hidden gem This family-owned shop is busy despite no marketing and almost no signage. Customers come by word-of-mouth only and the front is serviced by the son of the owners. I had read reviews that there is little English, but had no issues as a non-Korean speaker. Every kind of kimchi you'd want is here (only one spice level) and they come in 1/2 gallon or 1 gallon jars. We got the 1/2 gallon cucumber for $18 and Napa cabbage for $21. The cucumber is the exact price as Joonga's at Costco and Napa is double the price but SO worth it. You pay for the quality and support a small business. It's well-seasoned (more so than average) and mild spice level. They offer dry goods and drinks. There's spices, bean pastes, and sikhye. I've heard their sikhye is amazing and runs out fast. I've stumbled Upon This Place by checking Yelp and getting influenced on social media. This is a mom and pop store that sells specifically all types of kimchi. They accept both cash and credit card and everything is pretty reasonably priced. It's pretty legit because most of the customers that come by are mostly Korean and they're buying a lot of items. I never have to fight for parking here and I've always been in and out quickly. In addition to kimchi, they also have homemade soybean paste and hot pepper paste you can use in various Korean dishes at home. They've also even had marinated oysters and marinated raw crab. I'm not really into that, but if I was I would definitely want to try those. I specifically only had the slice kimchi and the Cucumber kimchi. I just wish that they had more selections of smaller sizes because personally I can't finish the larger sizes like 32 oz or larger. Maybe if I had a family or if I wanted to share with a bunch of people I could get a larger size. There was clear communication to coordinate pickup; the process was quick and easy. This is my MOMS go to for the Best Kimchi in town. Located across from Knotts Berry Farm off Western Ave & La Palma near the US Postal Office. There's so much more than just Scrumptious Kimchi here. They have all assortment of kimchi. Literally a Kimchi Factory. They even sell refreshing Shikye Rice drink by the gallon container. Must drink within a few days definitely no more than a week or it'll go bad. The drink isn't overly sweet and perfect. Enjoy over ice at home is the best for mee. Every time mom comes and get kimchi here. She knows to grab the Shikye drink. Kimchi is fresh, perfect amount of spiciness, the jars are glass and good size. Sometimes, you find something so good it literally makes you stop and ask yourself if you want to share it on Yelp. You worry about if somehow the quality of the product will diminish if it becomes too popular, if it becomes more difficult to find parking, etc... HGK is literally THAT place! So I've heard of HGK for years but somehow never stopped in. Maybe because I live SO close to an Hmart, maybe because I've grown accustomed to mediocre, store bought kimchi. But a few weeks ago I decided to drive out and see what all the hype's been about. HGK is literally right across the street from Knott's Berry Farm, located in a small, unassuming little strip mall. It has its own parking lot and is easily accessible. When I walked in, I was greeted by an adorable friendly Korean gentleman who was eager to help me. He explained that they were out of cut kimchi that day, but that the whole one was better anyway! Customer started coming in, all knowing exactly what they wanted- everyone was speaking Korean & they all wanted both the whole regular kimchi and white radish kimchi as well. So I basically decided to get what everyone was ordering, along with cucumber kimchi (my favorite). I was expecting the prices to be higher than what I'm used to, but I was pleasantly surprised that the price points were similar to, if not a bit cheaper than what I'm used to paying at Korean grocery stores! Most of the other customers were also purchasing bags of frozen Mandu (Korean dumplings) but I forgot to bring my cooler and decided to try some on my next visit. FYI- they carry other Korean snacks and staples. It's a rather small shop, but there's definitely variety! Anywho, I literally raced home and couldn't wait to taste everything- O.M.G. It was AMAZING!!! It was the first time in years I felt like I was eating delicious, homemade kimchi. HGK is LEGIT!!! The Napa cabbage kimchi and cucumber kimchi were both perfectly seasoned, crunchy, and deliciously. I normally am not a white kimchi fan, but HGK's has now made me a fan. My family was shocked to see me inhaling it (lol)! If you are anywhere in the SoCal area and want/need kimchi, this should be the ONLY place you get it from. It really is THAT good! It's so hard to go back to supermarket kimchi once you've tried their kimchi. Made fresh every day - I can eat an entire small jar within a few days! It's the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, with a richness that supermarket kimchi just can't beat. Once it gets really fermented, their kimchi makes the most delicious kimchi chigae. I go out of my way now from Irvine just to pick up jars of kimchi every few weeks. $21 for the larger jar of kimchi, $14 for the smaller jar of kimchi. Came here due to all the IG hype. We were talking to the couple ahead of us asking if they were regulars and they said they were. They always come for the Napa cabbage and oyster kimchis. We followed suit but got the smaller jars of the Napa cabbage, cucumber and oysters. The older non-English owner kept insisting to get the larger jars but since it was our first time, we wanted to try them out first before committing to the big jars. So glad we stuck to our gut on the small size because after eating the kimchis, we found them saltier than we like and wasn't too fond of the oyster. The holy grail for Kimchi in my humble opinion. Anytime I'm near Buena Park I have to stop here for a gallon of whole Napa cabbage kimchi for only $17. It's a tiny place with refrigerators on the wall full of the good stuff. Right now during Covid you can't grab your own, you just tell them what you want and they'll get it for you. I tested them to see if they knew a good place to score cocaine since they kind of look like a front for a drug operation but they just looked at me with a quizzical look and shrugged their shoulders. As soon as I get home I put the gallon jar in the corner of my kitchen and I don't even look at it for 72 hours. Every time my wife gets mad at me and asks why the heck did I bring home kimchi smelling up the kitchen again? LOl!!! Then in three days I open up the jar and cut up my first head of cabbage with kitchen scissors and put it in a glass container to keep on the counter while I put the gallon into the refrigerator. I keep the cut up Kimchi on the counter for the next few days while I snack on it. I continually do that with each head of Napa cabbage I pull from the jar throughout the month it lasts me. It's seriously one of my favorite foods. That tangy, fermented, spicy, sour and salty flavor that I love so much. And this place does it right! read more
