Congratulations graduating class of 2018. I checked out your exhibit today and I was quite…read moreimpressed. The gallery is located in a back corner of the CSUN campus and is free and open to all. Hours are usually 12-5 but they host a late night on Thursdays. Parking was just outside the building and you'll have to pay the minimum $4 for two hours ($8 for all day). This part of the campus is really cute, with its yellow buildings topped in moss. The gallery has four rooms. Hard to say what was my absolute favorite but the ceramic room was stunning, as were the large portraits.

I haven't been to very many state-supported university art museums. But aside from the superior…read moreSpeed at University of Louisville, they have been 3 or 2 star museums like the Fowler at UCLA, the Northern Arizona University Art Museum, SDSU Downtown Gallery, and Beall at UC Irvine. The CSUN Art Galleries weren't much different. Located in the north end of campus off North University Drive, the "Valley Vista" exhibition in the Main Gallery had a couple nice pieces to make for a pleasant 20 minute visit. The best artwork was donated by former CSUN art teachers. Given that there was no Yelp listing for the Main Gallery, I was expecting it to be dead on a Thursday evening, but there were plenty of people dropping in which was good to see. I guess the free admission helps attract people, but parking is a pain unless you already have a CSUN parking permit. At the opposite end of campus, there is a small gallery in the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC). It is located on the third floor on the left side past the restrooms. Of course, you need to see a concert to access the gallery so seeing all galleries in one visit is virtually impossible. I've enjoyed seeing the thoughtful art in the VPAC gallery during every intermission and like this gallery more than the Main Gallery. Note: I categorized this place as a "museum", but Yelp changed it to "art gallery" which is a subcategory of "shopping" and refuses to change it back. They do not sell art here.

The gallery was much bigger inside than I initially figured from looking through windows. I wasn't sure if it was the correct place because there's plenty buildings in the vicinity. Parking was ample but scattered. Anyways, I met some really nice people not just artists. Also, all artists works showcased at the gallery were up for sale, unless otherwise noted. It was a wonderful soirée with a nice crowd turnout. Comfortable. Creative. Friendly with artists, intellectuals and local patrons.

They have been open for a little over a year and almost exclusively showcase art from Valley based artist. They tend to rotate exhibitions every 1.5 months and kick off each new exhibit with a reception (wine + cheese). There tends to be a pretty diverse crowd from all over the LA metropolitan area. My favorite art exhibit so far has been the "Best of the Best of Mission College" which opened last Summer. Karen Nichols, the gallery curator/owner and former public school teacher, identified various art students from nearby Mission College to showcase their work. The exhibit included video installations and other contemporary pieces from up & coming local artist. Currently, the "Urban Places: The San Fernando Valley" runs through March 20,2010. Entrance to the gallery is free. There's sufficient street parking and various public lots behind the gallery and on First Street. The gallery is located behind the Coldstones Creamery.
