We were walking around in Williamsburg and stumbled across Northside Bakery. This is a Polish bakery, complete with a hot food bar, market items and baked goods. The hot food is ordered by the pound, and varies daily. We tried the perogies, sausage, potatoes and meatballs. Our favorite was the sausage. For the baked goods, we tried the prune donut and the coconut donut. Both were sweet but light. The prune filling is very strong, so you should only try if you are a prune fan. We had just finished lunch with some good friends. After lunch, they told us to walk around this cute neighborhood, called Williamsburg. Luckily, I did and stumbled across this small place. I was intrigued and poked my head inside. The delicious aroma of the bakery was so inviting so I walked in. They were super friendly and patient. I was looking at the pierogies as I've never had them before. I ordered a little bit to try. OMG! These were delicious! These donuts are soooo good. Ran here with my run club for early morning donuts. I tend to go for powder donuts so chose the powdery one without knowing what filling was inside--surprise me. I didn't have much expectations but oh my word, it was so good. It's crispy on the bottom and pillowy soft on top and the filling was a sort of apple compote that crept up after a few bites in. Came in here after eating some falafel to get a dessert. Wow this place has so much to offer. I settled on an eclair that was satisfying and not too sweet. I would totally return if I'm in the neighborhood as they have an extensive offering of food and desserts. They even serve coffee and have a small non perishable grocery offering all the way from Poland. I loved listening to customers and staff chatting in Polish while ogling at all the desserts. I've been here a number of times before about a decade ago. I've known it to have some nice Polish treats, so I had to stop in on my last trip to Bk. I asked for a plum paczek around 3pm on a Friday, and booooooyyy was it stale and dry. Really bad honestly. I had to throw it out because I couldn't handle the dough texture. Plum filling was a'ight. Polite service, quality goods, and fair prices have earned Northside Bakery a lot of fans for good reason! While I was sitting outside today, enjoying some pierogi, I overheard two unrelated people in two different groups mention to those around them that the bakery was their favorite, and then, of course, they all stopped in. I was delighted to find Northside Bakery stocks a variety of Kamis mustard, including my fave, spicy Russian style, and I bought two bottles in addition to a large jar of imported pickles and a giant (!) loaf of Pullman sourdough bread, which, when cut (as they do complimentary in the shop) yielded 26 or 28 slices (depending upon how you feel about the ends or whether you can make it home without trying some first). You should've seen me giddily making room for this bread in the freezer. As a person who lives alone and abides by a low carb diet most of the time, it just might last me forever (or close enough). And the best part? The whole loaf cost $7, which is exactly what I paid for HALF of a comparable loaf at Foster Sundry a few weeks ago, so you can bet your bananas I'm skipping FS and exclusively buying from Northside going forward. Looking forward to trying their other loaves as well. (If my loaf ever does run out, that is.) Going back to the pierogi, my friend bought us a couple to share, as we had just been walking around the area in search of a snack. We each had one meat-filled one, and then we halved and split one classic potato-and-cheese and one (of which its formal flavor title evades me) that contained mushroom. I got a glazed donut with prune(!) for $1.85 and 4 'lamingtons', which they called kokosanki for $2.69 (it's by pound). I'm trying to find lamingtons in NYC after having my first ones in Maine (of all places), and this place came up. The lamingtons were good and the cake itself was very moist - a nice treat that wasn't too sweet, but it didn't have the same allure that the Maine bakery had. The glazed donut was very good and yeasty when it came to the donut itself - the filling was indeed very pruney and thick, and didn't complement the donut too much. So, I bought a few things from them, and I liked it. Today I bought jelly buns with no jelly. Picture attached, cone that has more salt than sugar and a stale croissant. I tried to call them and politely advise to talk to a baker. Was told by a woman with Eastern European accent (just like mine :) that manager isn't there, she doesn't care, and if I want to, I can leave a 1 star review. And that is what I am doing. Excellent baked goods along with a hot buffet with savory dishes. The pierogi - both sweet and savory - were as good as they get. We also had some apple dumplings (my word) that were freshly made and scrumptious. A small table bar inside and 2 tables outside should you stay and eat (recommended for the best flavors). A few months ago I saw this place advertised on a Facebook group. The post raved about how good the selection of snacks, breads, pastries, and perogies are. After much debate I finally visited and that review should have raved more. This is a local Polish bakery that sells speciality prepackaged chocolates and snacks from Poland. I definitely recommend for the lovers of chocolate to try a few of the selections along the wall especially the chocolate wafers. The perogies are always flavorful and filling, my personal favorite is the cheese and potato. The warm jelly donuts that are baked fresh are really the best! It's something about the glaze with the sweet jelly that really is addicting. The staff is always nice and welcoming! It seems many locals come in and speak about Polish local items that you want made or wish they can get with the staff. The store has amazing pork chops, pierogis and pastries. It's a no-frills Polish bakery that serves amazing food for cheap prices. Their pork chop was one of the most tender and well-marinated pork chops I've ever had in my life, and only for $7. It also amazed me that they sold lamingtons, because I had been searching everywhere in New York to no avail until I came here. I got a whole bag of 10 for $7. Unfortunately we were told by a local Williamsburg-er that the store was to close soon due to an influx of new businesses coming into the area. I was sad upon hearing this news because Northside Bakery is one my favourite low key eateries in Brooklyn. The bread and baked goods here are crazy good. I recently started getting it because of Too Good To Go. Everything I have gotten has been absolutely scrumptious. Doughnut time! A co-worker of mine lives by this bakery and once a week he'd bring in a box of doughnuts. One thing true to my heart are doughnuts. I'll have to say these rank near the top. We usually get a choice of jelly filled doughnuts. One rose petal falvored the other raspberry. The rose petal flavor is a acquired taste and maybe off putting to some. Went back again for another Monday late lunch. The cabbage roll ($2.50/ piece)was good, unexpectedly light but filling. I also tried a pork meatball, with I think mushroom on the inside, with a creamy dill sauce on it (pretty interesting), latke, and string beans (had some kind of meat/bread? crumble on it, not so into that flavor). The hot buffet ended up being $4. It seemed like they sold out of a lot of the pastries this Monday, or maybe last Monday was slow? The dishes are very authentic and this place is on par with the many Polish Greenpoint spots just about half a mile away. It's worth just coming in to take a look at the selection. The tiramisu here is phenomenal. Tiramisu is my mother's favorite dessert and she's pretty picky about it (she hates it when it's too sweet and doesn't have enough coffee flavor) but she loved it here! The price was also great considering how large of a portion you get. I got two whole pieces (you can get a whole or a half) and one piece was way larger than I expected. This European bakery is using all natural and fresh ingredients. Their products range from cookies, to breads, to cakes and Napoleon. I got three different items to try. First, I had a raisin and walnut roll. Don't let the size of this little roll fool you. It's hearty and packed with plump raisins, dried cranberries and walnuts. It's got a great crispness and crunch on the outside, and loaded with the natural sweetness of the fruit and nuts. Then, my eyes went straight for this horseshoe looking pastry. I'd never seen one like it. Since there's nothing in the picture to scale the size, believe me when I say it's the size of my face (or your face, your friend's face, whoever). The pastry itself is layered with a light and flaky pastry dough, and what I would describe as a cross between a crisp croissant and a cookie. It has a slightly savory quality to it, but mixed with the large sugar crystals on top, you get a balanced combination. Then, seeping out of the middle is this perfectly sweet prune puree meets paste. Lastly, they said that one of their most popular items was their jelly donut. Sold. This softball sized donut is pretty awesome. The dough is pillowy, light and soft and confected with powdered sugar. The amount of jelly on the inside isn't very liberally injected, but, it is unique and delicious. It's a bit tart from the berries, but then, out of nowhere, you have a hint of floral, potentially rosewater. read more
