This review is for Dr. Fred Hsu's clinic. I had a great experience today during my appointment. Even though I was there for a whole two hours and endured some X-ray pain and prickling to my gums... it was good. I know a lot more about my teeth and learned that I have a cavity on my wisdom tooth. FML. But anyway, the service was EXCEPTIONAL. Loretta at the front desk was so helpful and friendly!!! Devorie, who was the lead assistant, was super awesome and kind. When she was taking my x-rays and stuffing the slides into my mouth, she made sure that I was comfortable and that I wasn't in too much pain, she was so thoughtful. I really liked her. Dr. Hsu was cool too, I asked him a lot of questions about my teeth and he was glad that I asked because people normally just want their teeth done and be done with everything. Dr. Hsu, his assistants and front desk help, Marie, are simply outstanding! No need to look any further if you're looking around for a new dentist. I live in Shoreline, my old dentist was in the U-Dist. No more I-5 driving! Because of ignoring (or putting off) seeing my dentist just as the pandemic hit us, my teeth suffered. Once I entered into Dr. Hus' office and spoke to Marie, who so kindly took all the time in the world to patiently explain my old timer's medicare insurance, I immediately felt at ease. The soothing, relaxing, Zen like environment immediately relaxed me. Right on time, a relaxed, smiling Dr. Hsu greeted me (after my cleaning and x-rays which I requested). He, like Marie, patiently explained the work that needed to be done, including the cost, as his costs are very reasonable. I bite the bullet and let him do the work that needed to be done. I must say that in all of my 75 yrs. and who-knows-how-may-dentists later, there is not a doubt in my mind that Dr. Hsu is The Very Best! Seriously! He is most gentle, most focus, most cost-conscious and has a quick wit sense of humor that I've ever come across in a professional, efficient dentist, ever! He is also a "dental artist". He does fantastic work. Between some crowns over implants, , and fillings, he has literally given me a new set of teeth that feel and look like my old ones, not to mention healthy gums again. Zero pain or soreness. Today, while Dr. Hsu was working on a crown, as I laid back in his comfy chair, admiring the colorful, fall leaves on the trees outside the window, I saw a hawk soaring above. I am shocked to see one negative review on here! I don't think they're referring to the right place. Five stars just aren't enough to rate these guys as they are a "TEN" in my book! I am one who fears the going to the dentist due to my horrifying experiences. Dr. Hsu and team have changed my perspective and made it a positive experience for me. Didn't have the best experience when I had my first cleaning after Judy left however Dr. Hsu made sure to turn that around and took over! :) Who does that!? I've had extractions, fillings,cleanings done so far, they've all been a pleasant experience every time! He also lets me watch movies on his Mini Ipad to take the attention away from all the sounds while he goes to work. :) Normally, the numbing process is the most difficult for me however Dr. Hsu has some sort of a magical technique - to where you cannot feel the needle at all- it literally feels like he slightly brushes my gum with a soft bristle toothbrush! To be truthful, I almost fell asleep a few times because he is so gentle. I love the fact that he's so honest and only does work on what absolutely needs to be done! He's also got a great sense of humor that highlights his persona. He is truly Amazing and an "ARTISTIC DENTIST". They're affordable and do Quality work! I have know Dr Hsu over 5 years since Dr.Micheal Martin left his own business Somewhat Dr Hsu is excellent and real communicate with me with a paper and pen and he willing to communicate with me pen and paper. I thought they are wonderful to take care of my teeth and gums disease that I realized they are very serious take care of gums and teeth. Judy is GREAT and told me that my gum need brush correctly. I've avoided the dentist for a decade for the standard list of reason - bad past experience with dentists and pain, no dental insurance, no pain in mouth, etc. Like so many other people - I bought the livingsocial deal for Dr. Hsu - because it really was too good of a deal to pass up. I'm sooo glad that I did. After the cleaning I went back for 2 follow up appointments to tend to some cosmetic issues. All 3 of the appointments were smooth. Dr. Hsu was very quick AND more importantly gentle. Also the follow up appointments I received 25% off of the work for paying that day / cash - the notation on the discount refers to a "recession stimulus discount". Wow! Best Dentist experience ever! That isn't to say that my teeth were in the best of shape as I walked into my appointment, because they certainly weren't. I've been without dental coverage for some time now, and I was overdue for a cleaning. Like others, I took advantage of the Living Social coupon, and paid Dr. Hsu a visit. Judy was great! She was friendly, gentle, and helpful in addressing my concerns. I actually enjoyed my time with Judy in the dentist chair, with my mouth open wide, my cool shades to shield the dentist lamp, and my "active salivary glands" leaving evidence on my paper bib and Judy's sleeve. Dr. Hsu was great. Descriptive of what he's doing (but not to the details that will make you wince). Considerate (making sure you won't have more pains than necessary). Constantly asking if I feel anything... etc. Going over the details of pricing before the procedure started (I didn't have my dental insurance at the time - hence the reason I went there with the deal purchased). This is my first Yelp review and THIS is why. THIS GUY ROCKS. I'm a 28 year old female and had not been to the dentist in over 10 years. I was expecting my next dentist to look down on me for that fact, but Dr. Hsu did not. In fact, he made me feel more comfortable than any other dentist I can remember going to. His staff were nice and super helpful with scheduling. I had to cancel and number of appointments before I finally made it in, and they were understanding through all of it. They were very clear about what my follow up appointments would cost and I left with a print-out of what needed to be done with options and prices. I had a living social deal here so I got a check up because I am prone to getting cavities and my visit to the dentist was long overdue. Judy who cleaned my teeth and noticed I had a lot of plaque build up and insisted that I should floss more. Flossing is such a time consuming task but a must do! Especially for those who have teeth that are weak to cavities. So she taught me how to floss and brush correctly. So now I have been trying to treat my teeth well. Service was nice. This was such a great experience for me that I had to sign up here just to leave this review. I had come in for the first time in over ten years due to a molar being very badly damaged--something I'd let get out of control purely because I have such intense anxiety over dental work in the first place. But as it had gotten to the point that I couldn't ignore it any longer, I googled around and found Dr. Hsu here at Northwest Dental Center. To start, the office is a very pleasant little place, and the reception team is very nice and helpful. I was given some paperwork to fill out, and was pleasantly surprised that anxiety was actually covered in the information they wanted to know. I don't know if that's common practice now or if it's unique to this office, but it instantly made me feel a little bit better about it. I was taken back and met by Dr. Hsu very promptly. He is absolutely committed to the comfort and health of his patients--when I nervously explained why my teeth aren't in the greatest of conditions, he reassured me that he was here to help me, not to make me feel ashamed. That feeling stuck through the entire process. Upon inspection and with an x-ray taken, he sat with me and very thoroughly went over all the information, from what exactly was wrong with my tooth to the possible courses of action we could take (complete with infographics!), and even gave me the costs of everything straight-out. He also wrote out a prescription for a medication to calm my anxiety for the actual work. When I returned today to get the work done, once again, he (and his assistant, who was wonderful as well) was 100% committed to making sure that I was doing all right--he checked in every few minutes, and was very clear that the control was entirely mine; if I wanted him to stop, all I had to do was raise my hand and he would stop. (Worth mentioning: the iPad mini with Amazon Prime streaming connected to the lamp above you. I got to watch a bit of Stargate while this was all going on!) He was very gentle through the entire process, explaining what he was doing as he was going. Despite my anxiety, I was able to keep it under control thanks to his (and his team's) efforts. (Also worth mentioning: the prices here are incredibly reasonable.) The real clincher, for me, was that he called me this evening to make sure that I was doing well, and letting me know that if I had any questions or concerns about the work, I could call him. tl;dr version: Dr. Hsu and his team are absolutely, incredibly committed to their patients, and their work is top-notch. If you are a person, like me, who suffers from extreme dental anxiety, this is the place you want to go. If I could rate higher than five stars I would. read more

Make sure you have your insurance ready for them or they won't see you. They actually stopped before and during appointment because my insurance hadn't been cleared by their receptionist who didn't ask for it over the phone, but when I got there. I had to actually ask at one point if my insurance was more important than my pain. Found i had an abscessed tooth, sent me home with an rx for antibiotics and said to use ibuprofen and it will feel better in 3 or so days and no follow up appointment... Don't expect much from these guys cause that's sure what I got... Not. Much. read more

I went back for my 6-month appointment, and I just wanted to say that Judy was AMAZING. First off I tend to keep good care (for a college student) of my teeth except for one part of my gums which I have had problems with for a long time... I flossed last night and my fillings came out! That was really scary. Since my insurance only covers preventive care, which means I have to pay for the replacement of my fillings. Then I googled dentist in Seattle area with good rating and I found Dr. Hsu. I was gonna call another dental office that is close to my place but they never call me back. Now I am glad that they did not call me back. This morning I called Dr.Hsu's office and my call was pick up after the first ring! I love that efficiency! Luckily I scheduled him today so that my teeth can be filled today! Anyway, the office was not that far to my place. And it's easy to be found after exiting from I-5. The office is not big but very clean and comfortable. Since I don't have a dental insurance, I can have extra 25% discount. And the price was reasonable and actually lower than I expected, which is great for college students like me. Dr Hsu explained my situation clear with pictures and he asked me whether I wanted to watch movie during the treatment, which is great for long treatments. Went today for bicuspid two chamber root canal, will return for permanent filling and crown. What can I say about him other than he's probably the best dentist I've seen in Seattle?! He spent time listening to me and explain as hard as he can (me and my tiny brain, duh!) about how my gum swelling and the abscess tooth, he showed me pictures of what he will do to my tooth and what might happen in worst case scenario. He made sure I'm comfortable in the chair, he let me watch a movie during the whole time he's working....and made sure it has closed caption! His assistant and receptionist are just as helpful, Devorie (receptionist) emailed me back and forth answering all my questions and very helpful and informative. I do not have insurance and asked for price list for the whole procedure and she immediately replied with the whole info plus discounts. His assistant ( I didn't catch her name) was also super friendly, accommodating, and all smiles from beginning to end. You can see that they are happy to work where they work. I can't believe I had my tooth extraction some place else a month before... I've seen 3 dentists. First one with tooth extraction, second was actually just 4 doors down (I'm glad he was busy that day and I only saw him for X-Ray and consultation, seeing me for only 2 minutes cost me 75$, shucks), and third time's a charm. I have run the gamut with dentists, and I think I have found a keeper. My father is a dentist, so I'd like to think I'm a bit more informed than the average bear. I have been to dentists that have charged me $200.00 to glue on a veneer (that came off two months later), several that attempt to tell me I need work when I don't, and then I found Dr. Hsu. He is very gentle, makes sure that you are well informed on the procedure, and doesn't pressure you in one way or another. You decide the fate of your teeth, and Dr. Hsu only gives you sound input to go on. He is able to show both the xray of the tooth and the color image to give you a better idea of the condition of your tooth. He really did a phenomenal crown prep, and his prices are well within the normal range. I would highly recommend him to someone looking for a general dentist. read more

I found Dr. Hsu through a Groupon special. At first I wasn't expecting much (being Groupon and all) but found Dr. Hsu to be top notch - he's very personal and friendly, and the work done was solid. He also has a friendly staff and a short wait time. About 14 years ago I went to see a very bad dentist who, in the process of replacing a filling chipped my tooth. I went back and the incompetent idiot simply filed down the sharp bits and sent me off without so much of an acknowledgement that he did anything wrong. Believe me, if I could remember his name he'd get a scathing review from me. After so many years the remaining enamel had worn down, exposing the dentine. I didn't have a regular dentist in Seattle (after my bad experience I continued to see my family dentist whenever I went back east to visit my family). So I came her on Yelp to find one. Dr. Hsu had really good reviews and Yelp offered a $250 for $100 deal, which was great since I don't have insurance. When I called, the receptionist was super friendly. I explained the situation and she explained my different options - the Yelp deal or the 25% new patient discount - so that I could choose what would likely work better for me. I was offered a couple of different time slots, one that afternoon and two the next morning. I was surprised to be able to get in so quickly given all the good reviews. Honestly so many openings made me slightly wary. I mean, shouldn't a dentist who gets such rave reviews have a waiting list? But I decided to have faith in the positive reviews here and go with it. When I went in, I was again impressed with the friendliness of everyone there. Dr. Hsu explained everything that was going on with my tooth. He showed me the xray and a photo and explained all that he would have to do. I have never been so well informed by any one in a medical profession! I was then given a quote for the cost and was asked if I wanted to proceed. They were very respectful of the fact that I did not have insurance without being condescending. Throughout the procedure Dr. Hsu and the technician explained what they were doing and made sure that I was comfortable. I was provided with sunglasses to use when the work light was on. And there was an ipad attached to the light with a selection of movies. Though you can't really watch a movie while having dental work done, it was nice to just have something to look at other than the ceiling. I had decided to purchase the Yelp deal and paid an additional $70 out of pocket for a total of $170. When paying I asked what the fees were for an exam. The receptionist told me what the exam fee was and what the cleaning fee was. I was told that I would still be eligible for the new patient 25% off discount, which I hadn't expected. I will certainly go back to Dr. Hsu for my exams and other dental work. I'm absolutely thrilled to have found a dentist who I feel I can trust to do good work! read more

I have been fortunate to have dental insurance up until last year. Apparently my insurance company didn't play by the rules and was banned from writing policies in WA state. Now that the cost of care is much more of a concern, it was a pleasant surprise to find Dr. Hsu's new patient special. Unlike most new patient offers, it doesn't include whitening, a Sonicare toothbrush or require a second appointment for a cleaning. It offered Xrays, cleaning and exam- just what I needed. First impression walking in today was of a plain, no frills clinic office. In some ways that was comforting, in other ways there was some ambiance missing. But I wasn't there to judge the appearance of the place- I was hoping to find a new dentist for the long term. I barely had time to begin filling out the paperwork before Judy came out and settled me into the chair. She asked a few preliminary questions and immediately got to work with xrays and a cleaning. I had asked by phone whether ultrasonic cleaning was available. I've had better experiences with that approach, and was expecting it. Judy opted for the traditional metal tools because she didn't want to make a mess on my beard. I thought about requesting otherwise, but deferred to Judy's judgement. So glad I did. The cleaning was done fairly quickly but thoroughly. And absolutely painless. That's never happened before regardless of where or how my cleanings have been done. A wonderful surprise. She spotted some wear on 2 teeth and started explaining the condition as she continued the cleaning. She then explained how it may have happened, what it meant, and what options were available if I wanted to address it. At each step of the way she was careful to make sure I was following the explanation. Another first. Xrays and cleaning finished, Dr Hsu came in for the exam. He was quite businesslike but not unfriendly. He confirmed what Judy had said and explained the options in a bit more detail. In response to my questions he used some visual aids which helped me understand even better. He also took 2 pictures of the teeth in question, and blew them up on the monitor so I could see the actual condition. Yet another first. I opted not to get the Yelp Deal since I didn't know whether I'd be back. Now I've got to save my pennies for the recommended procedure, but I'm so glad to have found a new, good dental practice at an affordable rate. I went to Dr. HSU for a cleaning and he was great! He was gentle and patient. He takes the time to explain why you need certain dental procedures. He uses x-rays, close-up photos of the teeth, and book illustrations to explain his point. He is very knowledgeable but doesn't come across as arrogant or pushy. As a new patient, you don't feel like he is trying to push you to do certain unnecessary procedure simply for cosmetic reasons or because they want to make more off of you. He offers new patients 25% discount for any dental work needed. The office staff is friendly. His office is quiet and pleasant. It doesn't feel like other dentist offices that are full of noise and chatter. Give Dr. Hsu a try if you are looking for a new dentist. Highly recommended! Since I had a lot of bad experiences with too many dentists, I tried not to go to Dr. Hsu's office lest the bad experience would break our friendship. I was totally wrong. After finding out many of my friends go to his office, I decided to give it a try. Now I wish I could have gone to his office as soon as possible. The front desk person is friendly, informational, and helpful. Dr. Hsu is gentle and good at his job. And his humor took my fear of the drill away. Yes, I always get cavity. I was so happy for the big discount he gave me on my first visit. Then I realized every new patient gets it. With such a good service at a low price, I really shouldn't complain. read more

Great dentist experience. Nice hygienist, nice dentist, nice office, pretty fast and seemed thorough. I had a groupon for another dentist once that was only so-so and I've had variable dentist experiences in general, but Dr. Hsu was great. I'd give five stars but I was dissatisfied with the financial end-- I never thought I'd say this, but they have too many different deals! I bought the yelp deal after being told on the phone that there is a new patient deal ($100) or a yelp deal ($100 for $250), and that if the new patient special was a better deal than the yelp one, I could just use the yelp voucher as a $100 credit toward the new patient deal. In the office, I was told that I couldn't "combine" offers (even though I wanted to use the $100 yelp credit as a non-special, regular $100/not $250 deal), so I used the yelp deal that I'd already bought and paid the difference towards the undiscounted price. This means I paid an extra $30, which isn't that big a deal, but had the info I received on the phone been clearer I wouldn't have bought the voucher and saved myself 30%! They also have a 5% cash/check discount that I didn't know about until I was filling out paperwork, but I would have taken advantage of it, meaning I could have saved another $15-- maybe? I don't know, because I'm not sure whether that can be combined with other offers... It was still much cheaper than any other places I called as a new patient with no insurance and a good experience in the chair. Just don't buy the yelp deal expecting it to be the best offer for your initial visit, and if you can, bring cash or check! read more

This is the first time I have gone to the dentist in 5-6 years, I have tried to avoid them but figured it over due for a check up. I scheduled an exam and cleaning and it was one of the best dentist experiences I have had. Dr. Hsu was very informative about everything going on and what he was doing. Turned out I had one cavity and I was able to get an appointment 2 days later to get it filled. Filling was quick and painless, there was even an overhead tablet to watch a movie while they were doing it. I will be going here next time I need any work done or a cleaning. read more

Dr. Fred Hsu and his team are awesome. I've been Dr. Hsu's patient for more than ten years, and I feel very fortunate to have found him. I've had all kinds of treatments - fillings, crowns, cleanings, exams and even a front tooth that completely broke off about five years ago. Dr. Hsu has always given me EXCELLENT service, every time. He is very patient, thorough and precise. Dr. Hsu takes plenty of time during a procedure, he explains everything that I will or might experience, and asks me several times if I'm okay and have any discomfort. Clearly, their priority is to do the job as well as possible. I have 100% confidence in Dr. Hsu and his team. He also shows me every X-ray and photo taken, and explains carefully what we are seeing in the photo or X-ray and what it means. If there is a shadow, we monitor it - and several times, no work was needed after monitoring the tooth. After 11 years as their patient, I can say that you cannot do any better than to have Dr. Hsu as your dentist. No matter where you live in the Seattle area, the trip is very well worth it, for your dental health and peace of mind. And the front office staff has always been very friendly and helpful to me.
