Multiple fenced enclosures and unlike most other boarding facilities, they let the dogs out to run and play with each other. Our dog always comes home exhausted and happy. It is down a long dirt road and our dog has figured out what it means when we start driving down it. She couldn't be more excited to go back every time. They are often booked during holidays, so make sure to book in advance. Prices are very reasonable and the owners are very good and patient with the animals. My only complaint is the somewhat limited hours on Sundays. It makes pick ups and drop offs a bit more inconvenient since we're always coming from out of town. To the person who left a 1 star review with their dog covered in feces, we have never had any issues like this. Baths aren't included by default so if someone's dog likes to roll around in their own feces or gets stressed out in a kennel environment and goes to the bathroom in their kennel, then this is entirely possible, but nowhere near neglectful. Our dog has come home dirty and smelly a few times, but we take her there year-round and this is the result of them playing with other dogs outside in the dirt and mud. It can't be avoided and I prefer the setup they have. I do believe they offer baths, but I'm not certain.

We asked for a bath before we picked him up and that was done, he was fine, glad to see us but seemed to do well with all the other dogs. Claudia's home is on a quiet street in Port Townsend. A generous yard has sturdy fencing. Dogs are really her guests. The home is filled with toys and dog beds, but dogs have free access to beds and other furniture. They get several walks a day, and (if you like) photo updates come throughout the stay. When we picked up our high energy 13-month-old Northwest Farm Terrier, Marley, was relaxed and clearly at home. It's revealing that after our initial visit to get to know one-another, Marley would whimper and pull at her leash TOWARD Happy Paws. She loves it! Claudia has made a point of studying dogs. She believes only in positive re-enforcement, and makes it clear that this is a resort for dogs, not a training kennel. A look at her website reveals so much about her approach and philosophy toward companion animals. We will certainly return, secure in the knowledge that Marley will be happy and well cared for. My only reservation in writing this review is that she will become too popular. We'd like to keep Happy Paws for ourselves!

We used Irene multiple times for care of our standard poodle puppy and I would not recommend her…read more The first time was for over a week at Christmas when our pup was about 5 months old. We told her he sleeps in a crate and that if he is getting too active he should be put in the crate as that was part of the training method we were using. She insisted that she didn't want to bring the crate with her. Luckily, it worked out fine. Fast forward less than two months to Feb and we planned a 4 day weekend out of town. We booked it over a month in advance. In that time our puppy grew into what the trainer calls "teen attitude" as he was nearing full sexual development. He was way more excitable and testing boundaries with training. The day before we planned to leave, my child got sick so we decided to stay home. I didn't want to be a jerk and cancel the booking at the last minute. Irene thanked me for that. After picking him up at 10 am on Friday suddenly at 1:30 the next day she calls me and says she is bringing the dog back because he's barking, scratching at the door and playing too rough with the other dog she is watching at the same time. She had told me there would be another dog with him but she did not have the dogs meet each other first to see if they got along. I have no doubt my pup was barking and scratching and jumping on the other dog. HE'S A PUPPY! But she knew he was a puppy and chose to also take care of an older dog with back problems at the same time. She also chose not use a crate. We are working with a trainer who says we have to keep a harness and leash on him all the time and he spends time in the crate every day to help him chill out. But she refused to use the methods we were using to control his behavior. After her call saying she would be bringing him back in a couple hours, I left the house briefly and came back to find my pup in his crate with a note that said we owed her $90. Her rate was $40 a day at Christmas and now it was suddenly $45 with no warning or explanation. We had to pay for 2 full days when it had been a little over 24 hours.... and SHE chose to end it early! When she came back to get her money she acted like it was a character flaw that our puppy was acting like a puppy. She took no responsibility for the fact that she chose to house him with an older dog he had never met before. She told me how she spent a lot of time doing agility training with him to calm him down. WTF? How does agility training help a puppy stop jumping and barking? When we put him in a crate and use the positive reinforcement methods from our trainer he calms down and is quiet within a couple minutes. But she didn't even want to hear that or try it, she just did it her way and then dropped him off when it didn't work. What if we had been in Canada like we planned? I shudder to think what she would have done with our puppy because he was acting like a puppy and she couldn't handle it. Would we have had to drop everything on our vacation and drive home? I realize that our pup was probably being a pain in the butt. She is supposed to be a professional; she should be able to plan for and handle standard puppy behavior or she shouldn't take puppies. She could have at least tried to manage it with the techniques we use. The way she handled the whole thing was obnoxious and unprofessional.

We paid her and gave her a tip. Our dog seemed slightly more shy than normal, but he's a shy dog anyways. 500 yards down the road there's pools of blood in the backseat of my car. This woman handed us back a damaged and hurt dog without saying anything. Immediately we return to try and address this and at least get some bandages. Understanding that accidents happen but frustrated that this info was not disclosed as it should've been. There was not more than 5 minutes between us leaving and returning. We called the business and nobody answered. When we returned no one was there and nobody answered the phone, middle of the day. The dog is still bleeding actively. It's obvious that this woman couldn't have been oblivious to this fact. There was simply too much blood. We wait around the place for fifteen minutes. Occasionally knocking or calling the business to no avail. They gave us a damaged dog, that they hurt, and then promptly ignored us! We will never come back here again. They hurt our dog then took our money. On top of that, they really didn't do a good job grooming at all. My dog is hurt and I am lied to and taken advantage of. Take care of your dog and stay away from this place.
