Visited on a beautiful Sunday and had such a wonderful experience. Bill was amazing and accommodated everything I asked for. They were out of butter, but he even went to a neighboring business to get some for me -- such thoughtful service. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was so nice sitting outside, enjoying fresh, delicious crab in the sunshine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'll be telling everyone I know to come here if they're ever in Astoria, and I'll definitely be back myself!

Super Fresh Live Oysters $16/dozen *shuck yourself*

I LOVE that this place is away from the touristy downtown traffic. It's located at Pier 39. You can drive your car over an old wooden pier; very narrow, but wide enough to have 2 respectfully cautious cars pass each other without having to wait. Parking is limited, but we didn't have a problem finding a parking spot on a weekday afternoon. We wondered around a met a friendly man named "Tom" who knew where to find our requested fresh live oysters.... I thought he was awfully generous with his time as he escorted us to the an area that opened up into a small restaurant looking set-up, right over the water. Then he proceeded to get behind the counter and took our seafood order *lol* Yes, Tom is the fisherman, the owner, the cook (pre-covid) and the cashier! I ordered 1, then changed my mind and ordered 2 dozen live fresh oysters ($16/dozen). Tom inquired on my transport details and I told him that we had a 6hr drive straight through. He seemed concerned (due to fresh live seafood). Without asking, Tom hooked me up BIG Time and handed me a big 'ol plastic bag with ice at the bottom, then a thick net contains the live oysters. He advised me to add more ice immediately before heading home AND don't seal the bag, let it breath. I had no idea. I probably would have knotted the top of the plastic bag and continued on my way. Tom basically saved my oysters from suffocating on our trip home *Whew, Thanks Tom* :D They are not preparing hot food at this time, but the deals on super Fresh high quality seafood is are better than expected (changes daily, with advanced notice you can make requests and see what happens). You never really know what you have until you crack the shell... Every single oyster had lots of juice, so I KNOW that they were super Fresh. I will be back for more *** 5-stars ***

Hanthorn is definitely a place I can recommend over and over again! They close early though so we weren't able to catch them for dinner - I wish we did. We stayed in a suite upstairs on Pier 39 and was able to pop by before we checked out the next morning. This place was definitely an experience - I felt like Anthony Boudain eating at a crab stand on the pier. We ordered the crab melt, currently not on the menu cause Tom (owner) got tired of making them and decided to erase it off the white board. But he did say that if you want something, just ask! Most likely he'll be able to accommodate and make it! And boy we were glad we asked cause the crab melt was delicious! Full of mayo and cheddar cheese, fresh crab was folded in and baked on top of some bread! Rich and fantastic!!! While we waited for the crab melt, I ordered 3 fresh Willapa Bay oysters - what makes them special, they are grown as "floating oysters" and not on the sand, which gives them a fresh non-gritty flavor. I liked them so much, I asked for 3 more to make my half dozen. Tom was chatting with us and kept shucking them for me - you can tell he was passionate and very proud of them. Don't ask for Tobasco! You don't need it and it'll just offend Tom! Just some lemon juice and you're good to go! I could eat these all day!!! Tom, the owner, was friendly; cracking jokes (some which we didn't understand) and giving us pointers on where to eat! You can tell he has a passion for food, very proud of the food he offers, and is a local to Astoria. He also serves crab cakes, but make sure to order these in advance cause they are not readily available. He has these large crab tanks so if you want fresh crab, live or cooked, this is the place to get them! They can pack it on ice to-go or cook it on the spot and serve it to you on-site (approx 30 mins cook time). Thanks for such delicious food and hospitality! We will definitely visit again if we're ever back in the area and recommend this place to all our friends!

If you see this, you've found the spot.

A little hidden spot on Pier 39 that we went to for our 2nd anniversary. Don't be afraid to get your hands messy. Dig into the crab! We ordered: - a dozen oysters w/lime & cocktail sauce - 2 fresh boiled crabs with lemons & butter - a bowl of chowder Spent $78 + tip It's a casual lunch place run by 2 local guys, where the food was fresh, cooked wonderfully, and we enjoyed chatting with Tom, the owner. Grab a beer and enjoy the sea breeze while looking out towards the ocean. If you're coming with a group of 4+, call ahead and put in your order. Even though they might have some boiled crab on ice to eat, if you want fresh boiled crab that's warm, you will need to wait about 40 mins. It's well worth the wait!

Tom The Crab Man. If you want crab go no where else. Want it cooked? He got it. Want it live and fresh? He got that too. Great prices, big crab and his conversation is on point too :-) Recommend you call before stopping by if you want the cooked crab.

For my money, this is one of Astoria's true gems. Being from Louisiana (although currently residing in New Mexico) I grew up eating oysters and I've been doing my best to eat my weight in oysters while staying here in Oregon. Unfortunately for me, most establishments seem to want to serve "oyster shooters" these days. Not how the good Lord intended man to consume oysters by my way of thinking. Tom thinks so too. You order them and he shucks them for you, right then and there. Good and fresh Willapa Bay oysters. They are open when they're open. Try and catch them when you can. It's worth it if you do. And spend some time talking with Tom. He's a good guy and a pleasure to talk to.

This place is great! Very hard to find but worth the effort. My wife and I had some freshly shucked oysters, crab cocktail, and their famous crab melt. Was to die for! Owner is great and wonderful to talk to. Knowledgeable about seafood, the area, and just a warm and pleasant guy. If you're looking for great seafood, this is your place in Astoria. The owner even invited us back to try a freshly caught salmon that evening. The picture is of that salmon. Wow!

Great Dungeness crabs. Amazing crab meat melt!! Tom who runs the place is a great friendly guy! Will definitely come back.

Have the prices of fresh crab come down to a reasonable price? The last time i was there the price was $12.99 a pound but at the local Freddies it was only $8.99 a pound for FRESH crab.

When the crabs are in season, the price for shrimps & crabs on September & October are lower.

That's just a fail, and it suggests a place that doesn't bother keeping things fresh. It kind of went downhill from there. We were looking for nice fresh fish and chips, wile we were out along the coast. We live near the coast ourselves, and are no strangers to good seafood. We decided to do the Cod and the Halibut fish and chips. While the halibut seemed fresh, the cod was waxy and looked old, and frankly i found it somehow mildly nauseating. I couldn't bring myself to teat it. The batter was crsipy, but lacked seasoning and tasted really flat (cardboard?). Aside from that, the coleslaw seemed pretty old soggy. Gross. Not impressed at all - some of the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Some people may like this kind of food - but i will actively avoid this place the next time in Astoria. Here, the art of curing is not a craft but a calling. Lunch is a liturgy. The clam chowder arrives like a maritime memory-velvety, studded with tender-cheeked clams, each spoonful a foghorn in a bowl. The salmon burger, grilled to a rosy medium, defies the dry, crumbly fates of lesser patties; it is juicy, lush, and dressed with a tartar that brightens like a lighthouse flash. But the true epiphany? The lox on a bagel--silk-smooth, brined with the precision of a jeweler, draped over cream cheese that yields like fresh snow. It is not merely eaten; it is contemplated. We depart with coolers stuffed with their cold-smoked Sockeye salmon-amber-gold, peppery, almost buttery in its melt-destined for Manhattan bagels and late-night toasts. It travels like treasure. Yet Josephson's soul isn't found in the smokehouse alone-it lives in the warm, unhurried grace of its counter staff, each one wonderfully kind. Against the coldness of algorithms, this is hospitality as rebellion. Five stars? Insufficient. This is a constellation.

It was a good decision. Note for fellow travelers: their menu is small. They are a smokehouse that oh by the way has a small dining area as well, which they call the Chowder House. Small can be beautiful. Specialization has its benefits. We ordered the chowder and smoked salmon on rye. First, the chowder. It's the real deal, slightly thinner than some, but not too thin, and boy howdy delicious. Seriously, its some of the best. I would say it's up there with Gracie's Sea Hag in Depoe Bay. It does not skimp on the clams, and is chunky throughout. The smoked salmon on rye exchanges a bagel for rye toast, but keeps the rest of the traditional deli staple intact. There is cream cheese, capers, red onion, and, of course, the salmon. (I don't know where smoked raw salmon ends and nova lox begins. They seem to be the same.) This is where we begin to understand those benefits of specialization. It was simply the best I've had. It was well smoked and tasted fabulous with the rye. If you have passed this place by for years as well, stop it, and stop by. It's good stuff. They also ship their smoked salmon.

They also have a good choice of other items on the menu Once I put in my order, the food comes quickly. The clam chowder was amazing. The smokiness of the clams Comes over into the soup. It was a smoky flavor, but it did not overwhelm the soup. It complimented it very well. There was a very generous portion of the clams and other ingredients. Dear Lord, I couldn't believe the size of that platter of fish and chips. Two giant pieces of rockfish, a very generous portion of fries, and a coleslaw. You also get ketchup for your fries, and a very delicious tartar sauce. I liked the coleslaw. It was not overdressed, and had just a little bit of a peppery bite. The pepper did not overwhelm the coleslaw. The fish was not overly battered, and not greasy at all. The fish was flaky and rich. The fries had just a littlle bit of a crisp on the outside, and were perfectly tender on the inside. The entire meal was amazing. It was so big, I brought one of the pieces of rockfish and about half of my fries back to my motel for breakfast the next morning. She made the whole experience even better. I ordered the FishMonger fish and chips platter, which came with two pieces of tuna, plus cod, rockfish, and salmon. It was an incredible amount of food for only $24! The batter was perfectly crunchy and flavorful, the fish tasted fresh, and the portions were very generous. I barely managed to finish it, but I persevered--mostly by sacrificing the fries! The only slightly confusing part was finding the restaurant. Some of the reviews made it sound like a standalone location, but FishMongers is actually located inside the South Jetty dining room and bar. Once I found it, though, I loved the atmosphere.
