I was seeking not only shelter, but also a supportive and nurturing environment that would empower me as a first time mother. From my brief experience, the program did not run in a way that aligned with Malta House's online mission statement. From the website, I had the impression that the program would focus on supporting a mother in areas of health, wellness, nutrition, parenting skills, financial security, mental health, child development, among other pertinent topics related to improving an individual's overall well-being. This was my main reason for choosing to relocate out of state for shelter. I decided that it would be advantageous for me to relocate out of state as I was eager to find support, and to grow as a person, and most importantly, as a mother. However, during my stay, neither the program's topics of conversations nor the mandatory groups addressed such topics. Instead, the program's main focus seemed to be on enforcing compliance with chores to maintain an individual's stay. The program's approach definitely felt more punitive, rather than therapeutic or supportive. The program was rooted in enforcing regulations rather than empowering mothers. The engagement was driven by repercussions, not genuine empowerment. I witnessed exhausted pregnant women being written up for not completing chores that, in my opinion, were unreasonable tasks--especially for those in such vulnerable conditions. In fact, after still being asked despite advocating on behalf of my health, I was once hospitalized, risking pre mature labor at eight months pregnant. This happened after being told to clean/scrub old spills under the glass of the bottom of a fridge left by another resident. The structure of the program did not seem designed with pregnant or postpartum women in mind. Grace and empathy were rarely offered; challenges were often dismissed as "excuses" to not complete chores or attend groups. The program director would remind residents that she "had a home to go to" while criticizing pregnant women for not completing chores on time. The director would also remind us that many women were willing and waiting to comply with program regulations to take our place in the program. The website stated, " WE'RE MUCH MORE THAN A SHELTER: Malta House provides a home and loving support system for those who are struggling with an unplanned pregnancy or who are new mothers of an infant or young baby. We offer homeless pregnant women and their children a family setting where they can grow emotionally, physically, and spiritually..." If I could describe the program based on my experience, I'd say Malta House is a transitional housing for women willing to do chores, attend (unstructured/uninformative) groups, and adhere to a curfew in order to maintain their stay. Unfortunately, the environment did not provide me with a "loving support system". Nurturing and supportive are words that I would not choose to describe the environment in which I resided in. There was a case manager (initials T.H.) who I felt genuinely cared about the women. However, the overall tone of the program did not cultivate a culture of empowerment in a supportive environment. Although I needed shelter, I had to leave Malta House as the environment was not conducive to my mental or physical health during my high risk pregnancy. I decided to leave and find a shelter even if it did not offer the supportive environment I initially sought after as I had failed to receive it anyway. I believe the purpose and mission of Malta House is beautiful in spirit. I truly hope someone will step in to bring meaningful changes to how the program is run and how the women are supported. My intention is not to discourage donations or support--on the contrary, the mothers there need resources, advocacy, and compassionate care more than ever.

She started recently attending this program almost 2 months ago after leaving rehab. She attends 5 days a week and will always share stories with me every day of what she's done and what she enjoyed. It brings me great comfort to know that she is in a safe, caring, supportive, & engaging environment when I'm at work. I am always communicating with the staff about her schedule, because of appointments or if something is going on with my mom. All the staff are really pleasant and helpful in so many ways. She is starting to make friends which is great for the social butterfly that she is. I did look at other social model day programs and there is nothing else that came close to a quality that the town of Huntington adult daycare program provides. The hours of operation are also amazing. As many places do not start until at least 9 AM. However, with my work schedule that is not doable so I'm very appreciative that they start at 8 AM and they end by 4pm. I am really happy that she is in such a great environment and gets to do things that she may not be able to do otherwise. I'm looking forward to her celebrating her 90th birthday with her new friends.

Weed Beach, located across a bay from Stamford, has something of a mystical quality to it. It is where high schoolers go in the summertime to smoke out (yes, the name is a coincidence), where the passionate but slightly off-tune sounds of local bands fill humid night air. Weed Beach has woodlands to wander through, a hidden playground through a clearing of trees, paddle tennis courts that I think only ghosts use, and lots and lots of weeds, making every step into the water squishy and unsure. But Pear Tree Point is the beach where you get things done. It's got boat docks attached, so it's the starting point for many a "booze cruise", a favorite pasttime of the Darienite. Families love Pear Tree Point, probably because it's shaped in such a way that it's easy for the kids to stay in view; there's nowhere to disappear to. So children go about producing their childlike things: sandcastles, trenches for the water to flow through, holes to bury themselves in. Pear Tree Point has a gazebo at its center, perched on top of rocks. It's perfect for eating a hamburger and fries from the concession stand during the day, and for making out at night. Pear Tree Point is situated along Long Neck Point, location of some of the fanciest houses in this very, very fancy part of the world. If you're the kind of person who likes to gawk at luxurious homes a la Newport, Rhode Island, then it's worth a slow drive down Long Neck Point road until you get to the end, which is a former girls' school now converted, I think, into residences. The atmosphere is rarefied, elegant, and oh-so-preppy. Pear Tree Point, like all the beaches in southern Fairfield County, has a kind of rough sand, and the water's generally cold. Tahiti it is not. The sun, like so many phenomena in the New York area, is either too dim or too scorching. It takes a certain toughness to enjoy beachgoing in the northeastern part of the United States. But after a day being there, you feel as if you have accompilshed something, and accomplishment, after all, is the highest personal value among most Darienites who bring the never-stop-achieving ethos of New York City back to their town.

One star off for their gross bathrooms. This beach is smaller than weed beach and does not have a pavilion like weed beach but has a cute gazebo and plenty of space. If you're lucky enough to even get in.

They will present you a contract that…read moreincludes coping, but then attempt to hold your pool project hostage until you agree that they DON'T have to install coping, despite it being in the contract that they wrote. After that, the owner, Jeremy, will call you and tell you that because there is no coping, they are not responsible for the shoddy work they did during the installation. Once we started getting other contractors to look at the installation, they declined to install or warrant any coping because the underlying concrete was already deteriorating and would cause the coping to crack and loosen. We had resorted to using outdoor carpet around the pool because no reputable pool or tile company in the area will touch this project. After only one year, the pool installation has deteriorated to the point that it will have to be replaced. This is an outright scam. It's a shame that they were the only pool company that carried the fiberglass pool shell we wanted. Had we known, we would have definitely found someone else. As you can see from the photos, there is only a concrete collar installed, no coping. We have since learned that if the concrete is that thin, it requires rebar or mesh reinforcement, and it obviously has neither. If it hadn't started cracking immediately, we would likely have been fooled by the thin, un-reinforced concrete. We have spent the last three years trying to get Fairfield to remedy this situation, and have had to reach out to the shell manufacturer for assistance.
