I hired Kellam to remove a large shelf and plaster a wall. From our first communication, Kellam was responsive, professional, and detailed. He gave me a very reasonable quote and proceeded to complete the work we had agreed upon in a very efficient manner. He explained every step of the process as he went forward and made me feel very comfortable that he knew what he was doing. He even went out of his way to point out a few other things going on in my apartment which I really appreciated. I hired NJH to repair damage to a restored antique mahogany staircase in my house. The newel post at the end of a section of the banister had separated from the handrail and was loosed at the base. That made this section of the banister wobbly, unsafe and prone to further damage. Prior and now failed repairs with mastic and nails were an eyesore and calling for further restoration work. Ben with Kellam's supervision closely conferred with me how to do the best structural and cosmetic restoration of the banister. They dismantled the newel post from the handrail and the mounting of the post to the staircase frame, and removed old nails and mastic from the post rails joint all without damage. To remove the post, they had to remove stapled carpeting and a stair tread that they replaced without damage at the end of the job. They very securely remounted the newel post with corner backets under the stair tread and long bolts into its base covered with matching round plugs. Having so securely remounted the post and restoring the post to rail mortise and tendon, the handrail was solidly secured without the further use of mastic, nails or screws. With a few touchups to old wood putty, they then managed to remove obvious evidence of prior repairs. As this section of handrail may need a restoration replacement to match the quality of the other staircase handrails, their method of reconnection rail to the post will allow for less problematic handrail replacement without damage. read more

Kellam is amazing! He helped me out by taking on my job last minute (movers fell through, and I needed shelving put up in order to unpack and get settled in, along with a bunch of small tasks like putting up pictures on the wall and rearranging furniture). Kellam was very courteous from first contact (responded in just a few hours from Yelp messaging), and then we switched to text messaging to confirm the job and communicate easily. He gave me a realistic set of expectations, including time and pricing (by hour for first 2 hours/minimum of 2 hrs, then by minute after that). Very reassuring right off the bat, with no surprises. Super professional, showed up on time, wearing a full suit and a mask (safety for COVID!), with all tools prepared for the tasks. Kellam was very efficient and didn't waste a minute of time - He confirmed each task with me, measured everything carefully, and made sure to keep each area clean as he worked. His assistant Jason helped to speed things along (helped with measurements and also put up some things independently), and was also super professional. Again this was all done after a really hectic move, so it was really amazing given that Kellam and Jason were navigating around 20 boxes squeezed into a studio apartment, to put up things on 10 foot walls). My job took 3.91 hours (going off our time stamps, and his final invoice since he clocks in and out via text) - and he earned every minute of it. He sent an invoice via PayPal to my email so it was easy to handle payment with my credit card. Loved how easy they made the whole process, from start to finish. I would absolutely not hesitate to hire him again or recommend him to others! Very impressed by his hard work. They came and did the estimate and work for the curtains and were fantastic. Originally dated 10/5/2010. *** I've never hired a handyman, but I've tried to hire one multiple times over the past few months to hang my curtains. My walls are a nightmare - I tried to hang these with a friend and they fell, and then my super came, tried, left big gaping holes in my wall, and promptly stopped answering my phone calls. You'd think I'd just give up, or just get tension rods, but nooo - I am completely enamored of the curtains that I bought and I got to the point mentally where I needed to have them up or my apartment would never feel like my home (yes, I'm crazy). I decided to call in the experts. First of all, out of all the handymen I called, these guys were the only ones to actually show up for their appointment - it's bad when simply showing up puts you ahead of the rest of the game, right? Well luckily, it's only bad for the other NYC handymen out there because thankfully, NYCityStuff is great for so much more than simply showing up. They sent THREE people out to do an estimate for me, which cost nothing, even if I decided not to hire them, and they had a very in-depth conversation about the work to be involved in front of me while they came up with the estimate - I appreciated hearing about all the details. They were able to book the appointment to do the work within two days. I didn't even have to be home - Suzanne came at 8am, I left for work at 8:30am, and I came home in the evening to beautifully, evenly hung curtains. They are a bit expensive, but the thing is that we live in New York, and what they charge is only a tad above normal handymen prices for New York. It wasn't that much more than phone estimates I got from handymen who never showed up who didn't even see my walls so couldn't tell what was really involved. That tad above normal-for-NY is completely worth it - you get efficient, trustworthy people who stand by their work and their word, who call you back, who are punctual... in short, who are a breeze to work with. I have complete faith that if my curtains were to fall, they'd come back and fix them without charging me again because they've promised me that their work will hold. All that is REALLY hard to find when looking for a handyman. And honestly, in the long run, you save money, because they do the job right the first time. If I ever need more work done in my apartment, I'll definitely call them - the peace of mind you get with hiring the best is worth skipping a few unnecessary luxuries. read more

My first run-in with NYCityStuff was underwhelming: a handyman came to mount my flat screen and hang a large mirror on my walls, but was inexperienced and ended up having to employ a few workarounds that made me nervous (putting liquid nails around the bolts holding my TV on the wall so it wouldn't spontaneously crash to the floor--really?) However, my feelings about them did a total 180 when Kellam, one of the lead NYCityStuff guys, came to take the TV & mirror down and then put them up in my new place. An easygoing and extremely knowledgeable guy, Kellam is a sustainable furniture & design installation expert moonlighting as a handyman on the side---i.e., sharing his wealth of knowledge so that people's apartments don't look heinous. He told me about this recent project he had just completed and I was truly impressed: http://www.inhabitat.c.... He apologized for the guy he had hired who had originally done the work, worked really efficiently and even pointed out a couple things for consideration (the right height for my TV so that I wouldn't get a crick in my neck, "drunk proofing" my window A/C by screwing it to window frame so I couldn't open it and accidentally send it into free fall, and literally hanging something spot on where I wanted it). On top of all this, Zoe coordinated both appointments for me completely via email, was easily reached and quick to respond. They're not the cheapest co. around, but they're not meant to be. This was a job very well done from start to finish. Kellam reached out to me for photos of the repairs that I needed done, which was a leak under my kitchen sink and a small paint job in the bathroom. We set a date. Jason arrived on time and got right down to work. He explained how he would repair the leak under my kitchen sink so that I would understand what the problem was. When that was completed he started right away on the painting in the bathroom. He was very neat while doing his work. Both Kellam and Jason were personable via text and in person. Gary was great! I had a bunch of odd jobs around my apartment and he was able to handle everything. I had dimmers installed in my bathroom and bedroom, shelves installed in the living room and bedroom (which was a pain since my walls are uneven and needed to be reinforced to hold heavy books), installed window blinds and put together a kitchen island. There was a little bit of a communication issue when I was first making the arrangements, but Kellam was really great about it and offered me a discount for the inconvenience. read more

Kellam and his crew are really as good as it gets, I think. I'm living alone for the first time, which means that I am LOATHE to ask or hire anyone to do anything for me- I'm afraid of being taken for a ride, I'm afraid they'll ruin my apartment, I don't want to pay someone to do something I can do myself etc. But when I decided that I wanted to loft a bed I knew that wasn't something I could do alone so I bit the bullet, came to yelp, and hired these guys (and gal). From the get-go I knew I had made a good decision. Of the four or five individuals or companies I contacted they were the only ones who answered my initial phone call. When they came to take a look at my space they were on time, professional, friendly, and assessed my needs (and my taste) in that way that makes you go "I didn't even know I wanted that!" Their aesthetic sense is pitch perfect, and I immediately felt comfortable letting them into my home. Because of a misunderstanding between the landlord of my building and the management company, at the very last minute, I had to change the plans for the bed and Kellam's response was singularly wonderful. Every time I called him, panicked, with a new requirement, he would say "uh, okay, let me call you back" and he would call me within five minutes having drafted a new plan with the same materials. The end result is a GORGEOUS, sturdy piece of furniture that has doubled the amount of space in my apartment and will undoubtedly be the centerpiece of my apartment design for many years to come. Kellam and his crew are extremely talented artists who obviously take pride in their work. Not only that, they're cool, friendly, kind, flexible and reasonable. This review is long overdue. Kellam, the owner, helped me to do some work in my bathroom which entailed removing an old marble tub surround, installing another one, and installing a shower door. It was a bit of a tricky job since it entailed fixing a previous contractor's botched work but Kellam did a great job. He also helped to fix a squeaky closet door and came back a year later to work on another issue free of charge. read more

This company seemed good at first. They called me back right away and put me in contact with the handyman that would install interior French doors for me. The handyman gave me a quote and then said to contact him when I have the doors in my possession. I purchased the doors and now all of a sudden I can't get ahold of the handyman and have these huge doors blocking my hallway. I tried via phone and email and no response. I called the office and the manager said he would have him call me, but that didn't happen. This company is incompetent and unreliable. I ended up choosing Checklist Home Services to install my doors and they are wonderful. read more

I had a very bad first experience with this company. The person doing the bookings was friendly and didn't return my calls on the matter I was trying to resolve. My first repair man did not complete the work requested, I was very disappointed with it. After about 4 weeks of complaints, I finally spoke to the owner of the company who gave me the time of a new handyman for free to fix the originally work that was poorly done. I am now satisfied with the work, but the experience was not good and I would ensure anyone who uses this service to demand a clear fixed price quote up front. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Ed Neale and the Notjusthandymen company. Their prices are reasonable. They worked quite quickly and did a beautiful job. They were very polite and easy to get along with, answered all my questions, cleaned-up after themselves, and went out of their way to make sure that I was pleased with everything. They did a beautiful job with roof repair, sheetrock work, replacements for sections of damaged tin ceilings, and some trim work. I recommend them very highly with no reservations whatsoever. Kellam helped us move an antique table to be our kitchen island as well as build stairs from our backyard to our cellar. The plan was to use the new stairs to move a washer dryer set to the basement. Kellam realized that doing a full run of treads on the stairs wouldn't let us fit the washer and dryer and advised us to make a shorter set of steps. Thank god he realized this as we were barely able to get the washer dryer into the basement with the shorter stairs. I cannot recommend Kellam and his crew enough. read more

We hired Not Just Handymen to do a number of projects around our apartment several years ago when we first moved in. Earlier this month. one of the curtain rails that they installed began to come out of the wall. I reached out to Kellam, who was able to very quickly set up a time to come an repair the rail, at no charge. It took him a few hours and an extra trip back to his workshop to get a tool, but he still refused to take any fee. He is professional, cleans up after finishing the work (immaculately!), and is very easy to work with. I will definitely use them again when I have projects I can't tackle on my own! read more

Was in a pinch and took a shot with these guys and they delivered 100%. Reached out to Kellam while he was out of the country and he was able to arrange for Jomar (very short notice) to come in and complete a few small jobs. Jomar was very helpful in explaining how the work was going to be completed (flat plasma install, how to deal with metal studs, etc.) and talked through the issues I raised as concerns. Jomar was very flexible with the timing and stayed very late to ensure the completion of the work (past midnight). He was terrific. NJH is a professional, knowledgeable and hard working organization, and I plan to use them again in the future. I strongly recommend these guys. read more

This is a review for Kellam Clark--I'm not sure if he's still with the same company, but his work for us has been spectacular. Kellam installed a couple of very tricky baby gates in our duplex, and helped with various other odd jobs. He came back a couple of months later when we had a problem with our washing machine. He figured out that soap had dripped behind the timer and damaged it, and he helped us order a replacement part that was as affordable as possible while also being correct.
