The space is large and includes multiple levels with an outdoor dining area during the summer. Ambiance is casual, more upscale then a pub, less upscale then white dog. Prices also fall somewhere in between. Most recently when we were seated our waitress offered a few recommendations for "healthy lunch" one of which was the butternut squash bolognese. I was hesitant since it had no meat but gave it a go. OMG. Fantastic, big portion, filling, and under 400 calories!? I've been dreaming about it ever since. My only small gripe was that the item was that we were told it was vegan but came out with shaved parmesan cheese. Much better than any other time I have been to a NYAJ. The wait staff was friendly and timely. It was lunch on a Saturday and there were 3 in my party. I showed up first and put in my name. The restaurant was pretty busy, and the hostess said our wait time would be about 10 mins while they cleared another table. My party showed up and the table was ready at the same time. Always start with the bread! It's wonderful in the lightly spicy cheesey oil. I had ordered the poke bowl for lunch and oh man it was a lot. I really appreciated all the fixings and toppings that were in the bowl. Incredible value for what you pay. I also got a beer; the selection is alright. I tried this place for the first time today and it's actually quite nice. The restaurant itself has a modern ambiance to it. The decoration and lighting feels upscale, the staff is friendly, and the service is prompt. It was a little busy, but the food we ordered arrived quickly and it tasted good! The salmon was flavorful and beautifully done. The rice was a little underwhelming -- not really seasoned and a little bland. The bread and its sauce were delicious. There didn't seem to be any lunch specials and depending on what you're used to paying for at similar restaurants (eg, BJ's), your meal might be a tad more expensive than you'd expect. I love the food here! The Buffalo chicken pizza is one of the best things in the area. The mustard cutlets are really good - they nailed how to make a cutlet! Our group of 6 decided to try this place. There are outdoor tables but unfortunately none were available. We did have a nice round table with a good view of college football on a large screen. They have a good menu with many options as well as a fit menu that specifies ingredients for vegetarians, gluten free, etc. Without planning it, the three women chose the goat cheese salad. The men had fish and chips, meatloaf, and grilled fish dinners. They gave us fresh focaccia with a bowl of oil, Parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes that was really good. The service was ok- a little slow and didn't really check on us other than to take our order and deliver our meals. The food was good. They serve Coke products. There's street parking as well as a nearby parking garage. It's located in the middle of Suburban Square. It has a very good and casual atmosphere. I'd recommend it and plan to return again. They do list the calories on the menu. I have mixed feelings about this because I like to know but at the same time I don't want to know- know what I mean? read more

Our serve today although she was knowledgeable her presentation was one that caused a little concern she was very very unkept her blouses very soiled and did not look fresh. Her overall appearance did not say I'm here ready to serve you. Also the staff was so loud. They were engaged in their own conversations that had nothing to do with serving the customers. While my review stands firm, I do believe that any company that goes out of their way to have happy patrons deserves the credit they are due. I will go back and try again. The server was very nice at least but I got the mustard Panko chicken to try something different and it was just so bland. It had no taste of anything whatsoever. My husband got the grilled salmon and that's just what it was, a piece of salmon with no seasoning or anything. Also the vegetable was broccoli and it didn't have anything on it either. Came here on a Saturday night a few weeks back. Servers and all staff were friendly, and went over the menu, happy to answer questions. Also, I noticed the table next to ours had some minor mistakes in their order, and the servers and manager were happy to make it right; the table seemed happy as well. Interesting modern casual atmosphere (matches the cuisine well), with highlights from 1980's movies playing on TV's. The food itself was very good. My appetizer was the "Nacho Average" chicken nachos, which were not served as a piled-high mountain of chips, but rather, a smaller, neater, less intimidating group of tortillas stacked neatly with the chicken. The lettuce wraps also looked good, and also not presented as I've seen them elsewhere (They were almost open, like when you get authentic tacos. So Interesting contemporary execution seems to be a hallmark here. I had the Sweet Blue Burger, Medium rare. The beef was cooked perfectly and blended well with the blue cheese and caramelized onions. The potato roll was the perfect vehicle for the delivery of this meal. Others at the table enjoyed the grilled salmon and Jambalaya. Overall, very good food. Will almost certainly return. It is slightly pricey, probably overly so for the serving size, but the execution gives it more value. Plus, you are on the main line, so there is a built-in premium there. So I walk in at 4:45 on a Monday. There are 4 tables seated and 4 people at the bar. The hostess tells me it's a 15-30 min wait. I asked her if she was joking. And she said no. They where short staffed. ( I am by myself) so I go sit at the bar. ( I had a bag with me and just wanted to be comfortable.) Bartender Gerald was vey nice. Took my order. Got me a beer. I get the dumplings first. They were good but the sauce was beyond salty, wouldn't get it again. I'm still drinking water 6 hours later. Got a blue cheese burger. Asked for it medium. It was well done but it was amazing and juicy anyway. I got mashed potatoes instead of fries and when I say they where dry. I mean desert dry. So besides my excellent bartender and the burger. I was in Ardmore and decided to get something to eat. Suburban Square doesn't have too many options so I opted in coming in here. I elected to sit at the bar and the bartender, Tav, took good care of me. Great conversation and suggested I try the spicy wings ( which weren't spicy) . It was part of a happy hour special (6 wings for $6) and the Miller lite were $3 . I noticed that have a very good happy hour special according to a few days of the week. I took the family here for lunch since we were at the Apple Store nearby. It was also time for the Eagles game to kick off so I thought this would be a good place to watch. I was right. The game was projected on a huge wall in the dining room. That would do. Food quality here is quite excellent. I went for a pretty basic pizza and had no complaints. My wife had chili and salad with no complaints. My three year old devoured his grilled cheese. We all devoured the bread and oil they put out and the dumpling appetizer had good complex flavors going for it. I think the prices are a little high for what you're getting in the end. I had Chicken Parmesan cheese with mozzarella on top. I think the sauce was a little too sour and I can visibly see how was the sauce watery on my dish and wasn't blend together. The chicken should be marinated with a little of salt. Came to NYAJ last night for dinner with my (VERY pregnant) sister and this is how things went. We had a reservation for 7:15 and were not seated until a little after 7:40. While we sat and waited to be seated, two couples who had walked in well after us were seated right away. We were told twice that the hostess would be checking on our table and watched table after table be seated moments after walking in. Hostesses barely acknowledged or communicated the hold up with us nor did they apologize for the wait. After being told our table was ready, we were taken upstairs and seated outside.... it was windy, cold and completely not what we wanted or were expecting. My sister said to the hostess that she wasn't prepared to sit in the cold without a jacket or anything to which she replied...nothing. So odd. We ordered two apps that were fine but very small for the price and when we couldn't stand sitting in the cold any longer, asked if we could order our entrees to go. Aside from the waitress (April) being very sweet, not a single manager or staff apologized for the situation and after taking our food home, both my chicken and my sisters steak were completely RAW. We dine out 2-3 times a week and let me just say that I have NEVER been served raw chicken. I felt absolutely sick to my stomach. This is a review that has a lot of factors so first know that I WILL go there again to give it another chance for a higher rating and second the food WAS really very tasty. My daughter and I were at Suburban Square on Friday June 14 to get a product serviced nearby. Factor: we picked a really bad day to go to Suburban Square as apparently just about every school in the area must have had its last day of school that day...so the square complex was unusually crowded. We tried to grab a quick bite at Ruby's but the wait line was out the door with tons of liberated children LOL. So, we headed back toward the car garage, saw several restaurants and decided to try "Not Your Average Joe's," even though it too looked busy (but not "Crazy-Busy..."). Since we only were two diners, we were pretty quickly lead to an upstairs table, which happened to look down on other diners and "the pass" where prepared meals were lined up for servers to take. After a normal wait time, our very pleasant server came by, took our drink orders and set down a small basket of very nice bread, along with a garlicky-peppery spread that was very good (but beware taking too much pepper at a time as it was rather spicy)! But, it was very tasty and we both liked it. We ordered chicken pot stickers as our appetizer and it too was delivered fairly quickly, along with more bread, as we only received three small cubes the first time, as with the second. Factor: it was now starting to get rather busy, even though it was around 1:30 and not the "height" of lunch hour...but again, there were a lot of mom's eating with groups of kids. Several tables filled around us, were served their entrees, finished and left while we were waiting for our main meals which we ordered at the same time as our appetizer. My daughter ordered a cheeseburger and I ordered a small bowl of jambalaya. The menu is quite varied and one can certainly like many things on it...from salads, sandwiches, grill items, pizza, to things you don't see too often on local menus, like that temptingly-described jambalaya! So then started THE WAIT. After a half-hour with no entree, I started joking with my daughter that I could see many many meals stacking up on the pass below...and tried guessing if any might be ours...nope At 45 minutes, I eye-balled our nice waiter, who had uncomfortably stopped by our table several times during THE WAIT to see if we wanted more bread. I politely smiled at him and said "no...we'd really just like our entrees...". I thought perhaps maybe our order never made it downstairs to the kitchen but, was assured it had. Finally nearing an hour wait, I spoke with the hostess who was shocked we had not yet been served and she got the manager who arrived at our table, followed quickly by our server. The manager was very nice but frankly, as with the server, he offered no clue as to WHEN our long-anticipated meal was coming... :( I thought he might at least offer "comping" our appetizer since we had been good-natured about THE WAIT and I even made a point, in front of the server, of saying to the manager that the server was very good/attentive. (In fact, the embarrassed server kept apologizing to me...). We finally did get our meals. Took about an hour. In all fairness, the food was very very hood. Nice flavors. Nice presentation. Friendly staff. Eclectic atmosphere. JUST DO NOT GO THERE WHEN IT IS REALLY BUSY.... So my OVERALL review is 3 with some hesitation. Let's see how it goes the next time I'm there. Went here last week with my family as our first meal out since COVID. We were all super excited. The bread, as always, was unreal. Delicious. Never fails. The outdoor seating is on their roof which is very nice. The service was really good, probably because they only have about 8 tables at a time. The food was only okay. Torn between giving 3 or 4 stars, but have to curve on the higher end of a 3.5 due to Not Your Average Joe's offering well above the scope of what most other chain restaurant operations offer. At the end of the day NYAJ is another chain establishment, and for that you do see a lot of the average tendencies that you'll find at other chain locations. But this is one of those rare chains that take things a bit beyond the typical by being one that focuses on seasonal menus, featuring plenty of unique weekly specials, plenty of gluten free options, and building its atmosphere and ambiance upon what its old location used to house. In the case of Ardmore the location that its within used to be a movie theater, and as you dine you can gaze upon a projection screen that showcases countless old school movie trailers. And who needs popcorn and soda for such when there's a good onion foccacia bread with oil and cheese, amicable appetizers like calamari and edamame dumplings, seasonal cocktails, and a decent craft beer selection to indulge upon while you watch amid good conversation? For entrees thus far I would have had a hard time deciding if they didn't have such n incredible lineup of seafood. the first time I enjoyed a well seared ahi tuna dish; and during the second I enjoyed a perfectly spiced jamablaya that was loaded with shrimp, chicken, andouille sausage and then some. But this is one of those well rounded menus that features something for everyone, and while its hard, its well worth saving room for desserts like key lime pie and their signature peanut butter thing. read more

We had a far better experience at the Ardmore location of NYAJ than we ever did at the Glen Mills one. First of all the layout, crowd and vibe are a bit different. We arrived in stages - 7 women in total - and our delightful, albeit overworked server, Melvin, came right away with bread and "dipping oil". Since we arrived in time for happy hour (must order by 7 PM) we were treated to $5 Sangria, Margarita or Pineapple Pain Killers. The Sangria, to me, was the tastiest of the 3. $6 apps included sliders in 3 varieties (any combination you choose), cheeseburger, mini crab cake (great) or buffalo chicken. We also tied the waffle fries and lettuce wraps (from the regular menu) and carrot cake for dessert. We had a great time socializing and listening to the (loud) 80's and 90's background music. Many years ago, before the age of television and cars, people were entertained by going to huge movie houses located conveniently close to major public transportation stops. One of these palaces was located at Suburban Square, it was the "Suburban" movie theater and what was cool about it was that it had a semi-circular lobby and two entrances - one on Coulter and one on St. James Place. Alas, that age is gone, and one of the early casualties was the Suburban. It closed in 1979. It was subsequently a farmer's market, which at first was 'bare bones' and then became more 'upscale'. Then it became a clothing store. Now it is the site of a Not Your Average Joe's location. NYAJ has actually made use of the curving marquee, converting it to a dining patio above street level. Why am I telling you all this? Because the thing I liked most was that the restaurant pays homage of a sort to the history of the building. One two story wall has the word "SUBURBAN" in silver letters near the top and a smooth space where they project movie trailers - everything from "Lawrence of Arabia" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". This was not something I'd expect a chain to do, and it pleased me. The Reverend Dr. Steak and I had an enjoyable lunch there. Unusually, we both chose the meatloaf. Usually we make an effort to get different items, both so we can sample more of the menu and so we can get a better sense of the offerings for ourselves. Alas, the spaghetti squash bolognese was not available for lunch that day, and that meatloaf looked so darn good. It generally did not disappoint, served almost as a sandwich with mashed potato "Bun" and fried onion strings. The sauce - BBQ - was quite tasty. The dish relies on these elements, as the meat itself is fairly tasteless. Be warned: Don't order it plain. That would disappoint. Service was excellent, attentive, thoughtful and friendly. The menu is broad enough that even my mom (pickiest of food pickers) can switch between a few choices. The seasonal vegetables and menu customizations keep this place from feeling like a typical chain. If you order a salad or a burger, I have no patience for your complaints - you know what you are getting. Service is a bit hit or miss, but they have been busy every single time I've been in here, so I don't hold it against them. Even the most rushed and least attentive server was patient and polite in her interactions. More often than not, the staff have been on point, quick with refills, good with suggestions, and offered great service. The ambiance is cool - I'm willing to agree with everyone that the film clips on the wall are a nice distraction. It distracts the whining children, housewives, and elderly, (and sometimes even me), but is less invasive than a full on tv program playing like at a sports bar. They just opened the marquee out front for spring/summer drinking & dining al fresco, which promises to be hopping. The real star here is the drinks. The cocktails and beer selection look tempting, but the secret surprise is the mocktails. Bottomless drinks include standard soda selections, six flavor varieties of lemonade and iced tea, and a raspberry lime rickey - divine! For a per-serve price you can also get more elaborate options in proper cocktail glasses, which come out looking like milkshakes and deliver on punch (you won't even remember it's non-alcoholic). Between the bread (stellar - but that's already been established by everyone else), solid, seasonal food options cooked near perfection and served in ample portions, and the fun range of drink choices, I enjoy coming here a lot. read more
