Food tasted old.. Saw bugs crawling on the floor and employees not wearing hair nets. I'd think twice

Need to change hours on door. I was there at 11:00 Sunday but discovered they were closed. 3 others were there besides me.

I got pretty lucky, arrived at 7:45 on a Sunday morning, as I was leaving at 7:55, the line was 7 deep with several cars parking in the lot. They had 3 people working the counter, so service was quick. Several dads were there with the little ones, grabbing breakfast so mom could get a few extra minutes of sleep. Now for the donuts, several varieties, glazed, filled, fritters, long johns, turnovers, muffins, and more. We grabbed two dozen, and my son quickly ate a glazed, maple long john and apple fritter...after he removed the feed bag, jinxed he doesn't speak while eating...he commented...those are really good, better than quiktrip..? Yes, much better... I ate a coconut sprinkle iced cake and a cinnamon roll, both were very tasty. The iced cake had a slight crunch to it, not that mushy oily taste some cake donuts have... Slivinsky's is a full service bakery, they also had bread, cakes, turnovers, and several other options I did not try. It's a little bit of a drive to Kearney, but I think it's worth it... Keep yelping...its good for your health...

But most everything has experienced 30% or more "shrinkflation".... prices are the same as I remember from a year or two ago, but now everything is about 2/3 the size it was. They now sell "short johns" as my daughter calls them, and the yum-yums are now about 4" long instead of full sized twists. The service was great, but the quality of the products just isn't where it used to be.

To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan's hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain's, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain's chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and they act as the essential pit stop, providing the fuel that keeps the light of inquiry burning bright. To dine at McLain's is to participate in a ritual of belonging. It is a place where the passage of time is marked not by the ticking of a clock, but by the turning of the oven trays. It is a reliable heartbeat in the neighborhood, steadfast and true, offering a reprieve from the clamor of the outside world. Whether one seeks a quiet moment of reflection over a cup of coffee or a celebratory feast that honors the simple, profound joy of eating well, McLain's remains an unrivaled steward of taste. It is not merely a bakery; it is the living, breathing soul of Waldo, a place where every bite serves as a reminder that some things in this life are exactly as good as they ought to be.

I'm a small person but with me and 3 other normal size customers (and the woman behind the counter) were packed in there. It was still a fun experience! They have 2 larger size pastry shelves with multiple Mexican pastries. Lots of bread, sugar, some cream, and some strawberry filling. There's a small refrigerator with a few cakes and cake slices as well. Cake slices are pretty large and they are $5. The pastries are $1.65 ea or $2.65 if stuffed with cream or strawberry jam. We got several varieties and got my Latin mother in law some bread and cookies. We enjoyed tasting our different picks. Bags of rolls were $2. They offer mole as well for purchase. I thought that was unique and if I ever decide to give it a try in cooking, I'd probably get some of this. This place is not fancy at all So if going to more of a hole in the wall as they might call it will bother you, this is not the place for you but you'll be missing out because this is authentic Mexican and just feeling the vibes is worth it! Grabbing some sweets just adds some cream and strawberry jam on top!

The smells and aroma make it hard to just pick one item. After one bite, I was convinced that it's the best pastry I've had in ages. It's the perfect balance of butter and sweetness that makes your tastebuds scream in excitement. The employee was as sweet and kind as the treats. Helpful and friendly as can be with our selections. This hidden gem is one of those small, easy-to-miss places that are significantly underappreciated.
