My entire life I've been looking for "the one" that one hair dresser who I would feel comfortable with and would make me look and feel well fabulous. Joseph has become that guy. I will probably never go to anybody else to do my hair! I came in looking to cut off my dead ends while keeping length and still maintaining the laid back maintenance of long hair with some subtle layers and he gave it to me. While taking into consideration the fact that I would be using clip in extensions for an upcoming event. He put in layers so that it would still be able to cover any clip ons I might be using. First off, let me say it has taken me a few months to really work up to writing this review, because I didn't know where to start. This past weekend, gave me the perfect starting point. I had been looking for a new stylist/colorist, and stumbled on the loft from yelp. All reviews looked great, and I was hoping to squeeze in a last minute ombré/highlights, and I got a call back from Summer confirming she could get me in, and I was super happy. I showed up on a Saturday morning, and showed her countless pictures of what I had hoped to accomplish, with both cut and color. We talked for 20-30 minutes, and I felt she had a great grasp on what I had wanted. I told her about my wedding next year, and how I wanted my highlights to look good then too. She said she created a style profile for me on her iPad. She began applying color, and wrapping, and then walked away when done. Not a problem, except 20-30 minutes later, my head and the wrap my hair was in started feeling very hot. She said it was the color lifting, and I didn't worry. I was then washed out, and I saw a few shades of blond in my hair, ashy blond mixed with platinum, thinking it will look different when dried. She began cutting my hair, and I asked for bangs, and they looked great. She styled my hair, and I walked out feeling and looking like a model. I paid $440 with tip. Flash forward to the first time I wash my hair after getting it cut (three days). I noticed my layers were incredibly choppy, not like the feathered shag I had asked for, and that I was having a hard time combing through a particular spot. I thought something was in my hair. As I lifted my hair to check, I noticed one of the sections where the blond had been colored platinum was completely burned off, leaving about 3 inches from scalp to end. I started crying, because this was a huge section burned off. When straightening my hair, I felt as if I had stripper stripes, because nothing is blended together, matching in color tone and looks awful. I had text Summer to see if she could fix it, and i was not sure if I could make the appointment and would let her know. I did not confirm, my bad, but she had also not messaged me asking if we were still on for a few days, and I forgot. Then, the evening of the appointment, she told me she waited for me for over an hour for me to show up, and never confirmed with me in the first place. I wanted to get it corrected from her, but I honestly felt so nervous going back to someone who messed my hair up, that I felt like it was almost fate to not go. I was trying to style my hair this weekend half up, and the section of burned off hair keeps popping out of my pins. I REALLY hope it will be grown out by the time I get married next year. I ended up getting my cut corrected by a Regis Salon in Gilbert, Arizona at a mall, and the stylist did a great job. The Loft salon has nice people, and I was really hoping for a better result. I am angry and upset about paying $440 for a bad color and cut (with a 20% off!!!) and I hope that other people will take this for what it's worth. Needless to say, I will never be back, and will definitely seek out a new stylist. read more

I used to hate getting my haircut. Hated it. Until about 4 years ago, when my future wife told me about Joseph and The Loft 8W. We live in Long Beach and the idea of driving up to LA for a haircut seemed ridiculous. Turns out, it's bitchen. I look forward to it every month. We drive up, leave our car in the lot across the street to get it washed while we're there, bring a bottle of wine up, take elevator up to the 8th floor, walk into an awesome space with a great view (see photo), drink wine, chat with Joseph, Kathy, and Summer (stylists), pet Gertrude and Chicken (pups), and laugh. Then, we head down to Cole's across the street for French dips and classic cocktails. In addition to the good time, Joseph has easily given me the best haircuts I've ever had. My wife loves him and says there's nobody better for cuts and color. I've brought a couple of other folks up from Long Beach and they're converts now, too. She is so skillful with the blade that she can perform close cuts of the sides with only her shears and a comb. Guys, if your hair stylist can't do that you should go to someone else! Cheryl-Lynn gave me a God Tier haircut. She spent so much time making sure it was a personalized cut, taking into account my hair texture and length. I don't think I've ever had such a personal and lovely cut. The results were fantastic. My boyfriend even complimented me on my hair out of the blue when I got home - something he has never done. SO IN LOVE with this salon and Kathy!! I just moved back to LA in July and was having trouble finding a go to salon. After an extremely terrible experience at another LA salon [see my last review] I was almost ready to give up, but then my friend Jessica recommended Kathy at The Loft for cut and color. She had thicker hair similar to mine and was very confident in her recommendation. My whole experience from booking my appointment to paying was amazing. Joseph, the owner was so much fun even though I only interacted with him for a few seconds to say hi. He greeted me upon entering, offered me beverages and made sure i was comfortable before grabbing Kathy who was wrapping up with a client. She sat me down and immediately listened to my needs. After a shitty color job at my last salon, I was over ombre and wanted to go back to dark natural hair, and she knew exactly what was needed to get me there. She also gave me a greta haircut that complimented my thick hair and kept in mind that I was growing my hair out so she only added enough layers to take some weight and damaged ends off. BEST PART!? This place offers 20% off all services for your first visit! But even without the discount I still find their prices extremely reasonable. I've been coming to the Loft since 2013, and Kathy knows more about my hair than I do myself. Kathy is very attentive and when I show up with split ends from the LA hard water, she works her magic and fixes it whilst maintaining as much length as possible. My hair grows like "miracle-gro", we've both agreed, so every time I come in, she efficiently puts layers in whilst removing the bulk. She is very knowledgeable in what she does, and she will be able to make excellent suggestions. I get my hair colored by Kathy every year as well, and I really like that she can do an ombre without using foils, resulting in a very natural, beachy look. I've had foils done before and I usually look like a zebra afterwards. Shes very easy to talk to and you can tell that she's able to pick up the gist of what you would like in your hair early on. I've come here for so long now that I'll even make the trip since I've moved to Riverside. I often walk out of here feeling like a new person - I get compliments all the time after I get my hair cut and styled! Oh. Summer is an absolutely amazing stylist and The Loft is where she currently resides. I have been following her around for years for a few simple reasons: She is incredibly talented and she listens to your requests; brings ideas , and adds funky and artistic flare. She has colored my hair every shade of the rainbow and her chemist skills are phenomenal, the color always turns out exactly the way we have discussed. She is pretty brilliant with the shears too, she can create any style and she will go slow and take the time to learn your hair before chopping away. She has given me so many great hairstyles over the years; I have been a wavy redhead to a sun-streaked blonde to a brazen brunette. I have had hair down to my arse and short as my ears. She was even able to repair a few bad cuts and gave me "color corrections" when I was crazy enough to go to other people. The best part? She is free of attitude and really fun to talk to. The Loft is kind of hidden - on the 8th floor of the Santa Fe building, which is probably why it took me so long to discover it. You probably wouldn't know it was there, unless you knew it was there. Once you find the place, it's a peaceful, artsy haven from the crazy hustle on the streets. Sometimes I walk into a place like this and feel like I'm just not cool enough to be there - but all of the staff is friendly and there is no snobbery or pretense. Summer Star is now my go-to girl for all things hair. I've only had a cut and style so far, but I always look and feel amazing when I leave. After a bad experience at a salon in Claremont, I was scared to trust another stylist again, so I neglected my hair for years. I read tons of reviews of different salons in SoCal and when I got to The Loft, I had a feeling this was going to be the one. It's strategically located in the heart of downtown LA, but on an eight floor, so you don't get curious passers-by looking at you. I loved that a lot and the space in general; it's beautifully decorated, very luminous, has a great view and most importantly, has highly qualified professionals. As soon as I met Kathy, I knew she was going to do a great job. She has a bubbly personality and you can tell she knows what she's talking about. I knew I wanted to get a hair cut and then possibly have the tips dyed green, but was not sure. She seemed very confident about such major changes and I trusted her 100%. I really appreciate all the tips she gave me about how to style and take care of my hair; no stylist had ever shared such knowledge with me before. Right after I told her I wanted ombre green hair, she told me my many gray hairs were going to add a special touch to it, which I thought was awesome, given that a couple of years ago, another specialist had told me I needed to dye my whole hair again before attempting ombre hair! (She was obviously trying to take advantage and wanted to charge me more). Well, if you decide to make the right decision and see Kathy, you'll know for a fact that she'll give you great advice and you'll get every penny worth. Believe me, you'll love her. I've been having a hair affair with Joseph Hayes for at least twelve years, even though I have to drive over a hundred miles every time I see him. You know you have an awesome hairstylist when he pings you on Facebook to tell you he has ideas for your next 'do, and then you make your appointment ASAP! Joseph is a genius with color and absolutely knows how to make a girl look and feel fabulous. I have absolutely no fear of telling him "Do whatever you think is best," and it always works out great. But he also always asks what you want and works with you to come up with a great style. I'm adventurous and I trust Joseph, so I usually just let him go, but I've also seen him working with clients who clearly have really specific ideas about what they want, and they're just as happy and comfortable as I am. And rest assured, if you have a really bad idea about what you want done to your hair, Joseph will let you know. The salon itself is lovely. It's decorated beautifully and is one of the cleanest places I go in life. Hellena hasn't done my hair (I can't cheat on Joseph, so that's the only reason), but I can report that she's very witty, friendly, fun, and kind. And hawt. I have super thick, long, wavy hair and not only was he completely unintimidated by the task (as so many are), he was more bold with the cut than anyone has been in a long time. I mentioned that I had a photo shoot the following day and he took the time to give it a beautiful blow out and style which I was excited to take out and show off. I've been living in Downtown for about 2 years and have finally found a home for my hair. I've never been to a salon where both owners personally came by the chair to introduce themselves and chat a bit. Everyone was genuine and friendly without being pretentious in the least. This was the worst hair experience I have ever had and I've been highlighting my hair since I was 13 years old! Completely unprofessional and destroyed my hair. I went in for highlights and my hair was completely fried and my scalp was totally burned. I attempted to contact them to let them know I wasn't happy yet I heard nothing back. Nobody called to offer to fix it or apologize for this horrible service. I was only called back when I disputed the charge (which I have never done in my life) and was at least two weeks after I'd gotten that service done. To top it off it took almost 8 hours to do my hair. I was charged $300 (which I think is an absurd amount of money and was told it would be a different price when I'd made the appointment). I also spent an additional $300 to do a color correction because I was so embarrassed to even be seen and my friends kept telling me how horrible it looked. When I went into the salon to fix my hair, the stylist (who is someone new as I moved to a new area) was completely mortified for me and kept telling me how terrified she was that my hair was going to break at the root. I couldn't even tell how horrible it was until the next morning because it was so dark when I'd left the salon since it had taken such a long time. I do NOT recommend this salon at all and I will be telling my friends what a horrible experience this was so they don't have the horrific experience I had. I made an appointment and they were able to squeeze me in with the new stylist Kathy. She was super friendly and did an awesome job on my hair! The massage during the shampoo was incredible. KATHY is AMAZING!! I'm really glad I discovered this place on yelp because it's right across the street from where I live and super convenient! I was in desperate need of a hair cut. My hair was extremely DRY and getting to the point of unmanageable. So I called to schedule an appointment and was surprised I was able to get an appointment the same day!
