A charming garden in Palo Alto. The hosts were warm and welcoming. A unique experience how the hosts organize an opportunity for artists to perform and for people to enjoy an afternoon listening to them. Felt like a community to be in someone's back yard with a group of like-minded people who were there to enjoy music. Check out the video of the hummingbird! Generous table of snacks and drinks. There's a…read morereason it's called "San Jose" SaXmas. I attended this event at Eastridge Mall in SJ this past Saturday, Center Court, near the giant xmas tree. There are a few tables and seating in this area if you're a spectator, but it's limited. Having to pick up a few items on this busy weekend before xmas, this was a delightful stop inside the shopping center. I got to enjoy the sounds of SJ SaXmas performers, musicians from all over who volunteered for this event, reportedly the largest annual gathering of saxophonists in the world. So many different kinds of saxophones and even rare and related instruments creating this wondrous ensemble of melodies including both traditional and less popular Christmas carols. This includes full versions and/or medleys with snippets of songs including Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, O Little Town of Bethlehem, O Come All Ye Faithful, Christmas Time is Here, What Child is This? (Christ the King), Santa Claus is Comin to Town, Frosty the Snowman, Winter Wonderland, O Come O Come Emanuel, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, The Christmas Song, You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch, Carol of the Bells, Jingle Bells, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. That's not the whole set list, but that's most of them. Players from different states, high school students from the east bay to Hollister, and local saxophonists of all ages, young and old, participated in this event, and do so every year (for the last 28 years so far). All musicians are welcome to join! Truly a one-of-a-kind and enjoyable performance, there's no way you could not appreciate this event (...unless you're the Grinch and don't like xmas music).

I loved it! It made me want to be a kid again myself. 221 saxophonists... that's impressive and a huge number of participants! Loving the holidays made me a big fan of this event. As a music lover, and perhaps I can say as a musician (since I do play keyboards and once a vocalist in my younger days), I wanted to be a part of the said event. As a parent of two musicians, one who has graduated and another high schooler currently in the program, I continue to be impressed by the education and opportunities Golden State Youth Orchestra has offered my children and others like them. From the perspective of music education, they have six ensembles, each with a dedicated director with extensive conducting experience and exceptional music credentials, for musicians of all levels and ages. Dr. Jindong Cai is the overall musical director and conductor of the Senior Symphony. The musicians in each section are supported by professional coaches. The organization is run professionally by a very competent staff, backed by an army of parent volunteers. Auditions are highly competitive, ensuring that the ensembles attract the most talented musicians. However, every musician is encouraged to learn and do their best in a fun, positive, supportive environment. The Senior Symphony is the elite group that wows audiences in venues like the Flint Center in Cupertino, the California Theatre in San Jose, and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. Every other year, this group carries their energy and spirit of the future of classical music in America to audiences abroad. In summer of 2017, they visited Central Europe, performing to standing ovations at prestigious venues in the Czech Republic (Smetana Hall in Prague), Austria (Große Musikvereinsaal in Vienna), Slovakia (Slovak Radio Hall in Bratislava), and Hungary (Bela Bartok National Concert Hall in Budapest). In summer of 2019, they will visit Scandinavia and Russia. Also notable are the outstanding summer workshops for junior-level musicians as well as the honors chamber program, in collaboration with coaches from the acclaimed Divisa Ensemble. A GSYO flute duo ("Flautasia") from the honors chamber program placed Third in California State in the 2018 Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC) VOCE competition - Ensemble Category. The ensembles perform a vast repertoire ranging from Baroque, Classical, and Romantic music to the modern music of Europe, America, and even Asian composers. Highlights of the season include the Holiday Concert, the Lunar New Year Concert, and the Annual Benefit Concert. From the initial contact by email to the day-of coordination, Kevin was responsive with our reachouts and insightful, ensuring details such as ground condition and spacing was sufficient and aligned with the venue. Our guests especially liked the lions going around the tables, greeting everyone before and after the drunken lion and double-stacked benches performance. The performance team also handled the unexpected situation with the outdoor lighting tangling on the lions flexibly and confidently as well, which we really appreciated. Wow, what an amazing experience! I got an opportunity to watch the Peninsula Symphony perform at…read morethe Flint Center thanks to Yelp. =) Since it was open seating, me and my sister were able to choose where we wanted to sit. We got there an hour before the show started, so we were able to sit in the 6th row (middle)! I was surprised to see a lot of people already seated an hour before the show, too. There was a man speaking on stage, and he was discussing the show. I thought that was pretty cool. He went over the program and gave us some background info. Ten minutes before the show started, I saw all the performers tuning their instruments. There was definitely a lot of noise on stage. =) Finally, the lights began to dim and the show was about to start. I was waiting in anticipation. =) I really enjoyed the first half of the show. All the flamenco dancers made the show really interesting. They all did a great job dancing to the music, too. I liked how there was a 20 minute intermission. This gave people time to use the restroom or just get up and stretch. The second half of the show was mainly a guitarist. He played all the songs without looking at any notes! I was really impressed. Overall, the Peninsula Symphony was a really great show.

My mom was a vocal major in college, and had classical music playing in our house every day. I…read morecould have been a musicology minor in college myself. I think I was less than 10 credits away. Growing up, I was the 3rd chair violinist in the school orchestra and I played the piano competitively throughout high school. Sadly, after college, I rarely got the chance to play either instrument, and I'm not even sure if I sat at a piano today, I could play. My mom and I had the pleasure of seeing the Peninsula Symphony kick off their 60th season at Flint Center on Saturday. Acclaimed concert pianist Jeffrey Siegel played one of my favorite concertos, Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor. We enjoyed a wonderful evening of Romantic masterpieces. I left feeling inspired to take up the piano again. Tickets to concerts are very affordable, and they perform at various concert halls throughout the Valley. Check out their schedule for upcoming concerts. I know I need a little more culture in my life, and this is something my mom and I can enjoy together, which is great for mother-daughter bonding.
