As a woman with really long hair, there's always the worry that they'll cut off "too much", but she always makes sure I'm happy with it before she cuts anything. Been desperately looking for somewhere safe to go to for a haircut. Showed up 15 min early. Front desk has me sit down. Hair stylist doesn't show up until 25 minutes AFTER my appointment started. No sorry, no "hey they'll be running late" from the front desk (because no one was there after 5 min the dude there just left without a word), nothing. Which was all I wanted. The bare minimum. I was referred to Tonya-Lynn by a mutual acquaintance, and she'd styled my hair twice already, with a third appointment booked. I'd recently transitioned from dark brown to blonde and was looking forward to a long-term relationship with a reliable stylist. Unfortunately, after my friendship with our mutual acquaintance ended, she abruptly dropped me as a client and canceled my upcoming session. This struck me as highly unprofessional and immature--it's disappointing to see someone turn away loyal, paying customers over personal matters. When I reached out to the salon, I was given the runaround with no callback or any attempt at service recovery. I wouldn't recommend trusting this salon or its stylists for consistent, reliable care. I had a haircut with Katie Herzig over the weekend. I requested a trim and blended layers but ended up losing several inches off my length, particularly in the front. The cut is very choppy/uneven and not what I requested. I was charged $315. After posting my initial review, I was given a partial refund of $85. I was not originally refunded this money when I reached out to her about the issue. Unfortunately, the haircut will require cutting my hair significantly shorter to correct the mistakes. While I am not fond of writing reviews, particularly bad reviews. I feel this experience at Novak with a hairstylist should be recorded somewhere as a means to inform and help the hair industry in some way in how to deal with an all too common bad situation that became even worse simply due to the lack of experience or lack of regard when the paying client is unhappy with paying for something they DID NOT ask for. I had been seeing this colorist for 2 years. Receiving a color service that in the end turns out to be a color 1) Much darker. 2) Complete opposite tone to what was discussed and shown in photos. 3) Sets me back $$$ 4) Sets me back even further in level hair color I want to end up at moving forward with to start gray blending. 5) Makes me want to hide all mirrors in my house.  And worst yet - absolutely no apology or sense of acknowledgement of my unhappiness in the least. Responding rudely to my plea for some assistance. GASLIGHTING: Gaslighting customers at the chair that it's the lighting in the salon and not taking them into lighting where they can see clearly and put their minds at ease that you have achieved what they initially asked for. Or further address the clients initial expectations. BLAMING THE CLIENT: Blaming the client that their hair "surprised you" in how it turned a completely different color, the complete opposite of what was discussed in the consult with photos and understanding of what could be achieved. "WE" MADE A MISTAKE: Trying to loop in the client to your mistake. Starting with '"WE" should have,' in an attempt to evade the fact the client just paid YOU for your expertise since you did the beauty school time. FOR A LITTLE MORE MONEY, YOU CAN ACHIEVE WHAT YOU INITIALLY WANTED IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME: Telling the client to go and purchase a Purple Shampoo or a Blue Shampoo to cancel the tones you just placed into their hair OR tones you initiated to stand out in their hair because you did not take the time or have the experience of basing your formula on the correct color theory taking the clients individual hair color and history into consideration.   THE QUICKIE: Offering to do a QUICK FIX for free to cover up one problem while creating another one. Ie:  Getting a toner done to cancel out warmth or ash, yet making the overall level a whole shade different, further away from what was initially discussed.  Also most toners last 2-3 washes and start fading depending on hair condition, texture etc.  In my Interior Design days, if I painted a clients house the wrong color and installed furnishings in a color that were not even close to what was discussed in the initial consult - I'd be out of a job. I'd be sued. read more

I was greatly looking forward to a break from reality- some much needed r&r after a very long week. Novak has provided me with some wonderful service in the past. Unfortunately, when I went to meet my stylist, she was heavily into a wildly controversial topic with her other client. Whether or not I agreed with them does not matter. It was a hot button topic that made me deeply uncomfortable. Absolutely everyone is entitled to their views. For me, being affronted with such a delicate topic ruined the relaxing service I was looking for. With respect to the stylist, I made my way to the front desk to pay the cancellation fee and leave promptly. The service I received in the past, the hospitality from the greeting staff was top notch. Maybe I will return in the future in hopes of professional service without any heated divisive banter. read more

The main place is good-- amenities and facilities are great, good location, good management, good complimentary beverages, good customer service. I'd give the salon itself 4 stars, but the specific experience I had brings it down. My first appointment with a stylist named Madelyn didn't go well. Bad haircut. Asked for curtain bangs and got two chunks snipped off in two blunt lines, but then they either let her go or she quit, so it was no harm no foul. It happens. At least it was just a cut. As a courtesy, I got scheduled with a new stylist since it happened the day before I was supposed to go in again. They put me with a stylist named Chris. They said she was great, so I didn't really mind as long as I was still seeing someone like I had planned. I don't think I've like, ever written a bad review? I'm really not the person to do that, but I keep thinking that if I had seen just one review like this that I wouldn't be out of a couple hundred dollars and in this situation, so, here we are. So with Chris... I'm sure she's great at vivids and cuts (as her photos/reviews look great for those), but I don't think blondes are her forté. Had to have two follow up appointments to fix what was messed up/done incorrectly in the first appointment, and she ended up refunding me the cost of the third appointment after I asked her to because it just kept getting worse and worse. So after a (male!) coworker asked me if I dyed my own hair at home, I realized I really did have a bad color job. I got the sense that she thought it was fine or that maybe I'd even asked for it to look like that, (I'd somehow asked for harsh, blunt, diagonal bleach lines because I agreed to "tapering"), so I lost a lot of confidence and didn't want to go back after that third appointment. Especially since apparently I had gotten exactly what I asked for at each step. I never received an apology or an admission of the mistakes, but I guess the partial refund was that in and of itself. I'll have to go have someone else fix it and my hair is just going to get more damaged. Again, really nice lady, genuinely wish the best to her, probably great with vivid colors because her hair was always bomb and bright, but to the blondes: this process is just something to be aware of. I don't know if I'll go to Novak again just because I'm 2 for 2 in the not-the-best-experience arena. Nothing directly against the salon, as I said their facilities are very high quality with great customer service to boot, the shampoo techs and receptionists are fantastic, but it feels like I keep striking out with their stylists and I am not inclined to do so again. read more

My son's appointment was canceled several times by different stylists. The first 2 times, I didn't even get a call. If they don't offer kids services, they can remove it from their list and say this place is for adults only. Don't waste people's time. The receptionists were unapologetic and kept repeating that they understood with a straight face. I don't think this place has a manager. One thing is for sure, DO NOT schedule with Camille. She didn't even bother to give a courtesy call. Instead, I had to drive 30 minutes to learn that. Abbie was very professional & super sweet! I had many questions about product etc. since I have had some issues in the past with my scalp, I was very impressed with her knowledge and I am very impressed with the studios commitment to the environment. I found Crystal through Instagram and am so happy I came to this salon! Crystal is amazing! She worked so hard to fix my hair with a great color correction! I went to someone else before and they messed up my hair! I had tones of yellow, orange, brown, and light blonde! Crystal was able to even all this out in one session and make my hair look amazing! She is so kind, funny, professional and an amazing stylist! I am so happy to say I finally found my go to stylist in Texas! It was hard finding someone to do my hair after moving from Connecticut to Texas, Crystal did everything I wanted and more. Plus she taught me how to do these awesome beach waves! I have not had anything done to my hair since before the pandemic. I looked online and found this place and when looking over website it was very difficult to choose a stylist because most do not have any bios listed and unfortunately I got a very inexperienced stylist that basically ruined my hair. I texted asking for help and all I got back was that sorry that happened and only person that can fix your hair is the same one that ruined it. I really thought that if I chose a top notch salon that I would get a top notch stylist. Unfortunate for me I got a stylist that needs to go back to school and paid over $400 total. Of course I wanted to get my hair done by a professional because my daughters wedding was the following week in Chicago and then we left for a vacation. Nothing like the stress of a ruined hair just before a wedding and vacation. If the stylist had bios written with what they specialized in then I would have been better able to make an educated choice. Sadly the re-do made me very nervous but left thinking my hair was fixed. It's NOT. 3 weeks later and my hair is not holding the color and looks horrible, faded and multiple shades of all colors not to mention that it's dry and breaking. Yes I was convinced to purchase product to protect my hair that cost over $100 which I think is too pricey but I didn't it and have only used that product since my initial visit. Needless to say I am at a loss of what to do with my faded and ruined hair that I think I will have to cut it all off and start over. Won't be going back!! This was my first time booking at Novak. I scheduled a last minute short haircut appointment online with Abbie Lorrin on 2/13, for a 4pm 2/14 appointment. My babysitter got sick the morning of my appointment, since I could not get any backup childcare, I tried to reschedule as soon as the salon opened. After they returned my call I was told Abbie would charge me for the day I "missed" plus charge me again when I actually would receive my service. I did state my babysitter got sick and I asked if the receptionist could ask if we could arrange putting the charges for the "missed" appointment towards my rescheduled appointment and he said that she said no. I decided not to continue with rescheduling, I have zero history with this stylist or salon, so it's not like I have prior missed/late appointments that would warrant this reaction. I guess people cancel on her enough that this is her policy... I just wanted to reschedule when I had childcare available again. This individual is not capable of working with someone under any circumstances. If there is any possibility you cannot make your appointment, either an emergency or just life in general, I don't recommend booking with her. I was charged $40 for a disappointing second hand conversation with a receptionist. You can check my other reviews, I never leave bad reviews but this interaction really deserves a PSA, especially for perspective clients who are also parents. read more

Incredible experience! Trying new salons and new hairstylists can be pretty daunting, but the professional and welcoming atmosphere of Novak really set my nervous heart at ease! The hairstylists there are very kind and incredibly talented! They will work with you to get your perfect haircut and will let you sit back and relax! I suggest researching which hairstylist will work best for you, each stylist has their own specialty and can work with any highly specific wants or needs with your hair. I scheduled a last minute appointment with Katie after seeing how the manager responded to some of the seriously bananas one star reviews (I'm looking at you woman who was offended she had to wait five minutes). They seemed to have really great COVID protocols: sanitizing areas, temperature checks, masks, etc. the front desk ladies were super helpful and brought me water before leading me to the shampoo station. Christina was my shampooer and she was incredibly kind and gentle. She then brought me back to Katie. Katie is an incredible woman and I loved my conversation with her. I came in after going a year without a trim and said I wanted to stop being mistaken for a 16 year old and wanted to trim a few inches. She was pretty inexpensive and did an INCREDIBLE JOB. I was nervous because I've never had hair this short, but she showed me how to style and curl it and gave a ton of great tips. I went home and for the first time since quarantine started wanted to go put on some makeup and a dress to match my new hair. I will absolutely will be coming back. **Update: the owner of the salon reached out to me on the same day and issued a full refund and even offered for me to keep the refunded products. Definitely turned the situation around!! I want to say first that I had a good experience with my stylist and liked the way my hair turned out. This review is about the salon itself. I had a bad experience with customer service at this salon. At the end of my appointment, the stylist gave me a purple shampoo and a set of shampoo and conditioner to buy that he recommended I use when I went home, because I asked about any particular way to care for my hair as I hadn't had it colored in a long time. I was a little hesitant about the price of all 3, so I asked how much it would cost and was told that they were probably around $20 each, so around $60 total for all 3, but that he did not know how to ring them up. I said that was fine and that I would still buy them because $60 seemed reasonable for those products. They told me that there was no one at the salon that could process the payment at that time for the products (I guess the front desk worker had gone home, but I'm not sure how they could process the payment for the service and not the products), and that I would either need to give my card info over the phone the next day or leave my card number with them. I opted to leave my card numbers because I would be at work during business hours the next day. The next day I received a text asking for my zip code to make the payment (texts attached). I gave it to them, but when I checked my bank account, I saw that I was charged $105. So, I texted back asking very politely about a return and never received a response. I was pretty upset about that, as I trusted them with my personal information and was charged almost $50 more than I was quoted and then did not get the courtesy of a response when I brought up the issue. I completely understand that the quote wasn't definite, but $105 is not even close to $60. So, because I didn't receive a response, I went in today to ask if I could return the unopened shampoo and conditioner because I was charged way more than I thought. I explained the situation to the front desk worker who told me that she had to speak with her manager about it because the salon is currently not doing returns because of the pandemic. This is an entirely valid policy that I completely understand, however it seems as though this should have been communicated when I was purchasing the items or when I asked about it over text and didn't receive a response. I was told that the manager was on vacation, but that they sent her a message and I left the products and my phone number with the front desk and waited to hear back. I then received a text later saying that I couldn't be refunded for the items and could instead make an exchange or pick them up. This was a very disappointing experience, especially because it was the salon that couldn't ring up the items in the first place to give me the true price. It seems only right that they would make an exception to make the situation right in light of the details, but that was simply not the case. While I acknowledge that there are great stylists there, based on my experience and their lack of value in their customers investments, I will definitely not be returning. read more

Then As I'm in the chair I was told that she would not have time to style my hair now and I had to push to at least get it straightened- we had an event and I needed the style portion. My hair was straightened but it was so frizzy and had so many flyaways i left and cried in my car from the experience. Came here for the first time today and had a MARVELOUS experience with Whitney. She was super sweet and patiently listened to what I wanted done. I had previously had a terrible experience at Panther City Salon and have been terrified to go anywhere to have someone color my hair. That being said, she asked a bunch of questions to be sure that both of us were on the same page before she started doing anything. After having the absolute best hair washing/head massage experience of my life with Christina, Whitney blow dried my hair and even talked me through how to create beautiful loose waves using the curling iron. I must say, the outside does not do justice to the beautiful salon inside! It is HUGE! 72 stylists right now in the salon, each with their very own unique rooms. I went on a special night, so I got a tour and let me tell you, it is like no other studio salon chain I've ever seen. The decor is beautiful! Earthy, chic, down to earth vibe! Luxury salon at its finest! Each stylist has a beautiful room, decorated all in their own way, personalized to their own personality. Upstairs..wow beautiful! Tons of lounge chairs with those hair dryers to not only dry your hair, but keep it moist. Did I mention they recycle EVERYTHING?! They are totally GREEN! They recycle foil, boxes, etc. The owners were so so nice! And I love their story! It's completely dependent on the cut cuz, as one of my curly-haired friends once said in a moment of commiseration, "Ain't nothing I can do about it anyway." I buzzed it for several years (3-guard on the sides, 5 on the top) out of irritation with dealing with it. But, my inner musician wins out over time and I grow it out again. Enter Ben Hudgins, a hair magician and local business leader that my GF introduced me to, and to whom she has been going for years. His hair practice extends beyond the salon I first went to see him for haircuts at in the 7th street area into regional and national beauty pageants. Follow him on Facebook to see his work. He's legit. Novak Studios is his new brainchild and it's pretty great. The studio itself is designed with comfort and individual attention in mind, as well as a meticulous, creative, and deeply researched consciousness toward the environment. Kinda blew my mind! And, of course, it's super cool inside, more of an uptown Dallas feel than what you'd expect on Lancaster. When first checking out the new digs, I was amazed by the amount of thought that went into each aspect of the design. It's more than I can articulate here. But, all you have to do is walk in and ask and the passion will begin to flow. I think that's what was most infectious to me about this studio. The passion behind it for customer experience, stylist opportunity, and eco-friendliness. I've only been to see Ben, so I can't speak to the other stylists. But, when my GF goes, she always gets "who did your hair?" questions. In fact, that's how she found Ben, asking that question of someone else!
