Walking into the Leech Pit is like getting vertigo at a strobe filled dance club (oontz oontz oontz) - there's just so much goodness you just need to pause to catch your breath and take it all in. But you can't pause because your heart is pounding and you're giddy with excitement. The rare concert t-shirts, the racks and racks of clothes that serve as documentary of every phase you ever went through, the action toys you spent every afternoon with (and realize you now could be rich if you had kept them instead of letting mom donate them to the stupid kid down the road because you're too old for them now SMH), the records - oh sweet Jesus the records! - and even record players for your new collection! It's a one stop shop for your wildest dreams!! As if the shop wasn't Valhalla on earth on its own, I met the owner too (I think his name was Adam, but he looks like an Izzy). He was damn cool - I think he's probably my long-lost best friend from 6th grade that I used to get in trouble with. When he shows you around you realize he knows every item intimately, because he curated everything in the store. I've found many books both that I was specifically looking for and ones I didn't know I needed. The prices are really unbeatable...especially when new books these days can be between $15-$30. I never buy new and am an avid thrift store shopper. But $2 Buck Books even boots Goodwill and Arc prices. Also, don't forget to stop by the back room for children's reads. The staff are very helpful if you're looking for a particular read. When I was there last, an employee (potentially owner or manager) took a walk in customer around the store to help them look for a title. I also happened to forget an item on the counter and called after I had gotten home. They said they had it on hold for me and were able to reunite my item to me upon returning to the store.

The folks at ACME had done me right in the beginning, too, and I started trusting them. That's the shame of it all - it's hard to fix broken trust. ...And so I'm bummed to the rafters to have to write this, but they blew my trust. Trust is a YUGE deal for old-fashioned fellers like my old self. When I give it, it's got value. Long story short? In dealing with some of the employees, we'd come to an agreement on a purchase. Then a manager - Dave - started fiddling with the deal, and before you know it, the price had gone up (several times, by hundreds of dollars) and what was included in the deal had gone down (by hundreds more), on top of multiple monthslong delays. Moreover, that selfsame manager had been cool to my face before trying to pull a fast one behind my back. Common parlance would refer to it as a "dick move". Other ACME employees tried to salvage things, but the deal was so broken by Dave that the only thing left was the death of a sure sale (with guaranteed profit on both sides of the ledger) and several other planned purchases. Now, problems like this rarely start at the bottom - a bad employee can be fired - but when a manager takes liberties with customers, who's got the mustard to cut him? That sort of disrespect to regular buyers is cancerous to an organization, especially a family-owned small chain like ACME. As long as ACME refuses to get their house (or their Dave) in order, they're going to keep losing deep-pocketed long-term customers like me (and others - we talk). Be better, y'all. Mr. V
