It would probably help to have some background knowledge of common lifts, but the instructors show the movements and they play on video screens if you need it. Everyone attending was generally in their own zone, so there isn't a lot of chatting because you really focus on getting the exercises done in the set times. I will say that the classes go by super quickly because you're always moving. Cons: The programming is set for the whole month. So each day of the week has its set program and you do that each week for the whole month. For me, this would get old (I really need variety). On the plus side, it does mean you get to see active gains throughout the month. The membership plan is a little pricey. I get why it costs so much, since they do have to cover rent and you only really attend during the class sessions. It isn't a type of gym where you just drop in when you want to use certain equipment. The unlimited monthly membership is $299, but in reality you are getting 30 or 31 classes depending on the month. Since the classes are the same all day, it is unlikely you would do two classes in a day, right? So the pricing is about $10/class if you do the unlimited monthly pass and you go every day. Some of the equipment was pretty smelly. I was at one station that honestly made me gag a little... I think the bench or maybe the dumbells had never been thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution.

Jonathan and Nino both do a great job as instructors helping with form and technique. This year I also added in some personal training with Kwame and it has been fantastic so far. Took a class on a whim after meaning to try [solidcore] for years, and I have been hooked ever…read moresince. Completely different from any other type of workout I've ever done -- including weight lifting, yoga, barre, boot camp-style classes. All of these I have appreciated, but the way that [solidcore] has shaken up my routine and jumpstarted me into finding a new kind of strength and mental fortitude is unmatched. I've been raving to this unexpected addition to my very busy life to so many friends and family members, several of them have tried classes and also gotten memberships. As others have surely said, the classes are hard and will remain so. I think the point is that your mind/body connection will be tested every visit, and the coaches do emphasize that 1) it's difficult, 2) the fact that you are here says something about you, and 3) you can and should shake it out when needed. I've discovered a strange love for slowly focusing on my obliques, which also might be the type of targeted exercise I hate more than any other. I've discovered that when I'm facing difficult things in my daily life, taking a class the morning I am nervous about something will set me up to know that I can take on anything else that comes my way that day. A bit more: the movements are extremely slow, and this workout is low impact, so great for anyone with knee issues. They focus on form and the classes are small enough that you can always ask for extra assists in that regard. You'll be lined up in one long row and you are mostly either looking at yourself in the mirror or focusing on a focal point somewhere below you. Lights are low and music is turned up. It's a whole vibe. Again, NOT my typical type of movement practice but it has been so good for me. First of all, the classes are challenging and engaging. The instructors do a great job pushing you just the right amount, so as you learn one thing, there is a new technique to improve. If you're like me and get bored at a regular gym, classes at N-Flux are great because you are building up to something and there is more to think about (although I'll admit my brain gets pretty slow by the end of an intense class, so I can't say *much* thinking happens at that point...). The second thing that makes me excited to get out as much as I can is that the community is incredible -- supportive, kind, funny, diverse, interesting. You definitely don't feel inadequate as someone new and inexperienced: more experienced students are always willing and eager to help out. The instructors work hard to cultivate an environment that is welcoming and supportive. So here I am, probably in the best shape of my life after just a few months, and it felt so easy! But more importantly, this place is a community. N-Flux has the best instructors and classes you will find anywhere in DC if you're interested in taking Krav Maga, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, and all sorts of other martial arts and combat sports. Chris and Colleen are the best instructors I've ever seen. They don't just want you to get skills, they teach concepts, conditioning, and character. Part of the training is how to be a good classmate, and experienced students help newer students and welcome new people. As a result, you're not just coming for a workout, you walk away welcomed and encouraged to be the best you can be -in everything. The classes are challenging in the best way, even their Yoga classes (and I hated yoga before I took N-Flux yoga with the amazing Scott and Maicie!). Chris and Colleen are tough and push you to be your best. Since starting, I've lost 25 pounds, gained 25 new friends, and according to my work colleagues, "am the happiest I've ever been." Our instructor is a relatively unassuming cutie pie in a tank top, shorts and heels. From the word go, we are using major muscle groups, engaging core, and attempting low-level "tricks" (crucifix, anyone). I even surprised myself because I completed a portion of a move I didn't think I'd even able to approximate. (and I note that she was VERY encouraging. All she wants to see is maximum effort and I can tell this is going to seriously whip some of my tired muscles into shape) Two days later, I'm wobbly and sore and cannot WAIT for the next class. I am often wary of classes that state they can accommodate all fitness levels/ages/sizes/weights cause ... well I'm heavy... but I made it. There was an older lady in my class and bodies of all kinds and we all had a great time. Points for: Parking (they have their own, off-street but it's limited) Accessory discounts that come with the purchase of a groupon (and as long as there is one available I will purchase classes and attempt to do this weekly or biweekly) Staff was super fun/nice, friendly. Studio is clean. I would have taken half a point off for the fact that I couldn't register for all my classes at one time using my groupon - I had to do them individually but the positives so far outweigh this tiny little admin jank that it was worth the time it took to make sure I got all the classes I wanted to get into. Win, win, win! Go prepared to WORK (bc the instructor is going to push you, HARD) If you're only going to do a class or two? Rent the shoes. They make all the difference in the world. For a recurring series of classes - BUY the shoes. You'll come out cheaper. No matter what you feel like your body issues are - wear the shortest shorts you can cram yaself into. Don't come here expecting to trot or twirl around the pole daintily. The P Spot is first and foremost a fitness studio. Head instructor and owner Michaela's motto is "Strong first, sexy second." She's tough and will call you out if you're not giving your best--but don't take it personally because she is here to give you the most bang for your buck! I'd like to consider myself as fit since I go to the gym daily but in my first class, I got my butt kicked! I've been going regularly for some time now and just when you think you're getting comfortable with the workout, Michaela switches things up and fires up a new set of muscles you never thought you had. I definitely have to hand to pole dancers who make it look sooo easy and graceful because in reality, I was a hot, clumsy mess. I definitely recommend getting gripping solution because the last thing you want to do is constantly slip when you're trying to land a trick. And for all first timers--don't compare yourself to other students in the class. The class hosts everyone from beginner to advanced and it will do you no good to see how you stack up against other people. Just focus on yourself and do your personal best. You will leave the studio feeling extremely exhausted but extremely accomplished and empowered.

Trained here for almost four years and was approaching my shodan test. I used to think of aikido as…read moremy organizing principle. That all changed when a third-degree black belt instructor dropped me on my head. He was showing off for his buddy, the chief instructor. Both those men are no longer at this dojo, but regardless I cannot train any more as I used to - following my concussion, I tried to come back (after time off for recuperation). But after weeks/months of headaches, and trying various sorts of accommodations, my doctor strongly recommended that I discontinue training. Aikido may be called the "art of peace" and its practitioners may say that good ukemi will neutralize any throw. But it is still possible for a careless person to injure you badly. I used to think (see my previous review) that if I spoke up, was careful about whom I trained with, and practiced diligently, it would protect me from harm. Not true. Being a good driver does not always save you from the bad drivers. (I decided to update my old review, after much time and thought, so that newcomers will have a more complete picture. It's hard to ask questions of people who have left.) As with any endeavor: caveat emptor. Do your research. Visit multiple places and compare them, before you choose. Ask around - what is the reputation of the place you are considering? What is their record for follow-up when someone gets injured? How long have the most senior students been training at this place? Are classes made up of mostly newbies - i.e., does the student body turn over regularly, or are there a lot of stalwarts? How many black belts come to practice regularly? (an indication of whether the place continues to offer room for growth, once that first black belt has been attained). How often is the chief instructor present and instructing? What precautions are in place when junior (smaller/younger/inexperienced) students train with senior (stronger/faster/aggressive) students? How long has each teacher been teaching? (Being a skilled practitioner is not always the same as being a good teacher.) Pick your partners (and teachers) carefully. (Even if everyone says "but he's such a nice guy!" - if you break a collarbone because he attempted a too-ambitious throw, you will be the one in a sling, not the nice guy.) How often does the dojo host community events? Do senior staff/teachers show up for community events? I have visited from time to time. (I still hang out socially with many friends from here.) With all my heart I still miss the practice and the community I used to have. But I have had to step back from both.

He was hooked from the first class. 3x a week - in the dojo - with 30 minute sessions is exactly the right prescription. Right across the street from the Red Line Metro --- and free parking garage for drivers like us. The most important part: The instructors are amazing. Patient like saints but with an eye toward discipline. Great instruction at the 5-6 year old level mixed with discipline and exercise. The classes are very disciplined for spacing, too --- all of the students and staff are good about wearing their masks and keeping the students on "their own square" to keep social distance norms intact. So sorry my grandson is going home at the end of this month. Thank you, DC Aikido!
