Nudibranch has a blissfully peaceful ambiance. My brother, 5 of my besties and I were seated next to the window. We did the prix fixe, and highly recommend that approach. The patatas bravas app was a creative and scrumptious fusion of Spanish and Korean cuisine. Loved the beef tartare, the tender meat contrasted against the potato crisps. Gnocchi was sprinkled with perfectly aged parm reggi (my fave). The hangar steak, too, couldn't have been better prepared. If you're a cheesecake fan, gotta try the Basque. The staff are informed, friendly, attentive, and the food is always fantastic (the duck for two is a must-get and outclasses many of the whole roast ducks available at Michelin rated places). I had a wonderful experience at nudibranch and will definitely be back again in the future! The staff was wonderful and attentive. The pre-fixe menu is sharing oriented, which was perfect because there were so many interesting things that everyone I was with wanted to try. Every single item was an absolute hit. I thought about going item by item in this review but everything was just so good that I would just be singing their praises over and over again. Some highlights include the pork jowl (I liked it so much I was inspired to buy some pork jowl to try cooking myself at home), the squid (the black bean sauce is like a concentrated Korean jajiangmien sauce, a delicious unexpected pairing), and the desserts (the black pepper cookie for the semifreddo was divine and the texture of the rosette was buttery yet crispy). I think my only drawback is that here is that the dessert isn't included in the pre-fixe menu. I don't think I've actually been to a place that has a pre-fixe menu that charged extra for the dessert. That being said, totally not worth knocking a star. It's just a shame to think that people pass up on tasting their amazing desserts because it's not a part of the set menu! read more

I took three of my friends here for our weekly supper club, and it was a hit. Was a little tough to get a reservation for 4 as the place is small and buzzy so definitely check Resy a little bit further in advance! Our server (whose name I forget but she had impeccable eyeliner) was super knowledgeable despite being brand new, and was patient with us as we finished our meal (and bottle of wine) ((and cocktails)) which I now realize was beyond closing time--I swear we would have left earlier had we known! I guess she was being *so* polite that we just didn't notice My favorite dish was the razor clams, the sea bass and shrimp were also delicious and the only thing at the table of 12 dishes that we did not like was the beef jerky -esque amuse bouche (only one of us eats meat and the smell was very...unusual lolol) but I mean hey, it was free. The food here is incredible! A friend and I went for restaurant week and I will definitely be taking both my family and fiancé back here. The portions were perfect and high quality so you leave here feeling perfect full and not gross. I got the hamachi aguachile to start, the uni pasta as my middle and the mushroom 3 ways as my main and you couldn't go wrong with any of these. Really enjoyed every dish we tried here! Our favorites were the mushroom (3rd course) and Mapo squingili (2nd course). Shout out to our waiter Darren for very solid recommendations! We tried: First course -- hamachi and the tartare. The hamachi was super fresh and acidic, a very light start. The tartare was a bit funky in taste because of the cheese, and I also really enjoyed the texture (a bit firmer). There was some hint of horseradish/mustard seed or something that I personally am not the biggest fan of usually, but the dish was objectively very good and well seasoned Second course -- Mapo squingili and corn dish. I LOVED the use of corn nuts in the corn dish since it added amazing textural contrast with the actual corn. We actually initially slept on the Mapo dish because we wanted to try the squid, but Darren said it was his favorite from this section so we trusted. I didn't know what squingili was before, but I preferred this dish over real Mapo tofu! The squingili was chewy and went super well with the dish. Third course -- mushroom and snapper. The fish was really tender, and the sauce it came with was like a curry/masala flavor. It paired really well with the nori rice. Nudibranch is on an assuming part of 1st Avenue, but when you walk inside you're transported away from the East Village and into a space that feels classy and refined. We started with the treviso and hamachi. Both were good starts to the meal. We then had the soba (with the uni supplement) and the garbanzo bean. The soba was delicious. The garbanzo bean was creative in its use of ingredients and textures. For our third course we had the flat iron and the mushroom. The steak had a clever use of spice and it worked well. The mushroom was an impressive dish - it's risky to prepare an ingredient 4 ways in case any of the preparations underdeliver, but in this case, all versions were successful. They describe the egg on the dish as being spreadable like butter, which is exactly the consistency I experienced - very cool. For dessert, we shared the rosette, which they describe as a play on funnel cake, with slices of pear on top. It was light, crispy, and airy, though a touch oily for my liking. Nudibranch is not your typical East Village restaurant. Certainly not your typical 1st Avenue restaurant. That's not to say it doesn't fit in with the East Village landscape -- it's approachable and relatively affordable as far as pre fixe menus go, it's just significantly more refined than most of the surrounding restaurants. The food is eclectic, inspired and creative with influences primarily from Asian cuisine. The service is particularly efficient and everyone who works here is just so wonderfully friendly and genuine. Three courses for $85 is not necessarily affordable more generally, but for an excellent pre fixe meal in Manhattan, it's absolutely a steal. We came here at 8pm on a Saturday night. The decor is simple yet very homey. There are side tables with books and fun artwork on the wall. Design is minimalist with lots of natural elements. It feels new, which it is. A lot of the restaurants on 1st Ave have been around for ages and have a more lived-in feel (which is also nice sometimes), so that's part of why the vibe at Nudibranch feels different. I read a review prior to coming here that said the cocktails were mediocre. I don't remember if it was on Google or Yelp but needless to say this review was very misguided. We each tried two cocktails and they were both fantastic. To start, I stayed very on-brand and ordered the Gilda Martini w/ gin (garnished w/ olive, white anchovy, piparra pepper). The martini itself was excellent but the garnish game was next-level. I knew that anchovies had been making it onto cocktail picks of late, but this was my first experience with one. My partner was suspicious but I was in heaven. My second drink was the East Village Iced Tea (vodka, rye, ramazzoti, lapsang souchong, peach, lemon, maple) which was a solid highball with ample complexity. My partner first got the Golden Hour (gin, forthave genepi, golden beet, carrot, pine honey, lemon) which was delicious, complex and vegetal, and he then got the Magenta Sour (mezcal, cocchi rosa, blueberry, fennel, assam tea, egg white) which was smoky, sweet, fruity and frothy. The food menu at Nudibranch is aligned with the new restaurant trend of smaller menus with set items. There was a great NYT article on this recently if anyone is interested. Anyway, Nudibranch is three courses, all savory (dessert menu has two items and you get it at the end), with the option to add on extras to certain dishes. Overall, the menu is Asian-leaning, but the range of items is extremely diverse. They suggest that each person orders differently so that everyone can share. We were impressed each step of the way. Eats, below: First course; Hamachi w/ Asian pear and yuzu vinaigrette: A+ Super fresh with subtle fruitiness and ample citrus. Ideal for a first dish. Treviso w/ smoked soy, marcona almond, myulchi, citrus: A+ Okay, well the amount of food here was pretty small, but it was done so impeccably that it didn't matter. Dressed lightly but the dressing was super favorful. The cheese, almonds and citrus underneath made it the perfect cold weather salad, all very fresh, with a great blend of textures and flavors. Roast pepper w/ tofu, finger lime, capers, boquerone: A+ Neither of us would've intuitively gone for this dish but our server mentioned that folks had been raving about to recently. So why not? It was certainly unusual but absolutely fantastic. Earthy, salty, faintly citrusy and quite light. I'd never think to put all of these ingredients together and they work beautifully. I called it a sophisticated deconstructed stuffed pepper at the time and I stand by that. Corn: A+ This dish isn't yet up on the online menu but it was one of our favorites. One of the heavier and richer dishes of the night, but it's all relative. Had some elements of Mexican street corn but with way more going on. Frog Legs w/ lemongrass, galangal, ginger: A My partner insisted on adding this on because a few of the earlier portions were smaller than expected. I don't each much fried food but I still enjoyed these. Like chicken wings but smaller and more delicate. Ginger and lemongrass are two of my favorite flavors so that was a nice tough. Red snapper w/ aji panca, tomato, chrysanthemum: A/A+ I've made snapper with tomatoes and peppers before and the flavors make a beautiful combo. Of course what I am capable of is a far cry from this -- gorgeous presentation, elegant in aesthetics and in flavors. Mushroom four ways w/ egg yolk: A+ If you like mushrooms, you absolutely must order this. It's richer and more savory than other dishes but small enough that it's not overly filling. As a group of 4 we ordered: - patatas bravas - tiny portion, usual patatas bravas - duck confit croquettes - luscious texture but $12 for 2... - crispy chicken sandwich - tasty but $2 for it to be lightly tossed in buffalo sauce... - hamachi - refreshing - steak tartare - yum! - 14 day dry aged duck - this was described and presented as a whole duck after it came out of the oven (there's even an intricate dried flower bouquet inserted into the chest cavity and presented to you table side before being carved up for eating ritual). My biggest gripe is that this "whole duck" is $145 just for the legs and wings to not be included... we saw the roasted duck in tact but where did they go??? The croquettes that we also paid $6/piece??? This place is $$$ but soooo worth!! Came here to try the tasting menu for our anniversary but somehow ended up coming on the one day they don't serve their tasting menu. The waitress was nice though and explained that the a la carte menu they offer is basically the same thing if you order one thing from each section. The restaurant was full on the Tuesday night we came for dinner, and the vibes felt modern yet cozy and lively, with a bar on one side and tables on the other. I love that they offer small sized cocktails, so we started with the ice caps are melting, which was lightly sweet and delicious. We started with the frog legs and hamachi. The hamachi was beautifully soft and acidic and refreshing. The frog legs tasted like fried chicken but more tender and not salted enough. We then got the mapo scungili and soba with uni add on. The uni was expensive but so delicate that it melted in our mouths and really made the dish special. The mapo was like a mapo tofu but with egg, and I enjoyed this flavorful Asian fusion dish. We ended with a fish curry and mushroom dish. The mushroom dish was so fun, with 4 types of mushrooms that you dip into an egg yolk. I love mushrooms so I loved it, my partner thought it was alright. We were shocked at the novelty behind each dish: there was creativity behind both the ingredients and preparation. 1) The fluke dish for example: the thinly shredded peppers of various colors topped with citrus makes for a extremely crunchy and refreshing combination that complements the light taste of fresh fluke. 2) The mushroom dish: fried but not heavy, with a egg yolk mixed in with a delicious creme. Combination once again was excellent. 3) GET THE DESSERT (semifreddo and rosette)-- it's just phenomenal.... Apparently they change "colors" (their menu) quite often depending on the seasons - just like nudibranch (google what it is before you go). My fiancé says "I think the concept as well as the food were a breath of fresh air as many people fall into the routine of status quo food items that are locked into each cultural parameter's standards. This place seems to reject falling into any single categorization." Tips: I would allot a good amount of time for this dinner as it takes some time to prepare. This is one of those spots you need to get to soon because you know it'll be very hard to once they inevitably land some Michelin stars. I went first to try it out soon after opening, and then again the following week because I couldn't stop thinking about some of the dishes. These chefs are all highly trained and creative and it shows in every detail of the restaurant. Every dish is delightful and distinct, combining flavors you never would've thought to. The natural wines and cocktails are all refreshing and equally surprising, particularly the Gilda martini. The vibes are immaculate. The service is very attentive and knowledgable, but approachable and make you feel comfortable very quickly. Amazing to take a date, friends, colleagues, or just go solo and treat yourself. We had a party of 6 people. It is a prefix menu where you can select one dish from each of the 3 categories. Since we had a group of 6, we got to try every dish on the menu. There were about two dishes that weren't on the menu online. Those two dishes were the flat iron, sea bass, and squid. Everything that I tried was good. There were quite a few dishes that really stood out to me. But it was hard to pick one favorite dish. I would recommend trying the fluke that was our groups favorite from the first category. I also liked the razor clam especially the sauce. All of the seafood dishes were so fresh. For the next category, my favorite was the cauliflower and also the shrimp. And for the last category, I liked the pork jowl and mushroom. The ambiance was very nice with a great playlist. Great customer service! Our server explained each dish as it came out. There are so many reasons not to think Nudibranch is the real-deal... the overused term "alum" of.. (insert extremely famous and popular former restaurant)... apply three-tiered tasting menu... and add in trendy-ish locale.. would make most people skeptical as to whether or not this new (once a pop up) restaurant actually brings the goods. I am happy to report that you can push your concerns to the side! Nudibranch brings the gooooooods. The tasting menu/prixe fixed approach makes the dining experience much easier and when going with a friend or a companion it allows you to try multiple items without killing your bank account. What we ordered: FOOD - Razor Clams :: great way to start the meal, refreshing, brightly flavored with a perfect touch of citrus - Hamachi :: never heard of a sea grape before? .. yea neither had I until this meal.. all you need to know when eating this is to prepare yourself for a mouth tingling experience. - Shrimp :: another surprising experience! Who would've ever thought that hot honey granola (A) is a thing and (B) would work so well and balanced with shrimp! - Soba :: I am a bit of a soba nerd... if it's on the menu, I am more than likely ordering that buckwheat magic. Definitely a tasty bite, but I wouldn't say it packed the level of flavor I was expecting. The waiter suggested we add uni to the experience for an additional cost, but we declined. I imagine if we had moved forward with that option it may have added that extra little somethin to make this dish sing. - Flatiron :: This was sold to us as their version of steak frites and it did not disappoint. The steak was nicely cooked and paired well with the saltiness of their taro "fries". I am being slightly nitpicky here, but the chimichurri didn't blow me away - Seabass :: One of my favorite items we had from the menu. Perfectly seasoned and the turnip cake paired with the sea bass was a perfect little bite! Nudibranch was phenomenal. I came here on a Saturday night, prepared to be wowed by the journey we were about to embark on and it was nothing short of amazing! There isn't quite a fusion taste to pinpoint what I'm eating despite the experimental nature of it all; it tastes cohesive and familiar as if these flavors just make sense already. The stars of the show for me were the mushroom and fluke dishes. The mushroom had a tremendous amount of depth, and umami to it. It felt like I was tasting a mushroom fifty different ways, from the mushroom sauce to the flaky and perfectly crispy texture of the mushrooms. The 67° sous vide egg in the middle was the cherry on top. The egg never spilled into the rest of the dish, nor was it over cooked. It retained the taste of a fresh yolk, while maintaining consistency to keep its form. All of these things together, along with the fresh chives make for a dish to die for. This is one of those dishes that just felt like it made sense to me, but I've never had it anywhere else. Cohesive, familiar and full of depth. The fluke was a fun dish, vibrant flavors accompanied by the crunchy texture of the toasted quinoa. Little strands of various vegetables made the dish all the more appealing and experimental to eat. Perhaps this is just my flavor profile, but I think this particular dish could've used something more citrusy to really bring out the flavor contrast between the fish, quinoa and vegetables. Nonetheless, a great, light introductory dish! Don't forget to try the kombucha with these dishes, I would highly recommend it; pretty much a MUST in my opinion as an alternative to the alcoholic drinks. Really separates the flavors between each dish. Cleanses the palate while at the same time creating a bridge for the journey of each dish. Finish it out with the Rosetta dessert, and you won't regret it. We were able to spend some time with Jeff after dinner service was over, and that guy clearly displays a passion for his craft. Deliberate and knowledgeable with everything that goes into each dish with an amazing story of how he got there! Huge respect to him. Nudibranch is only on their second week of inception yet the kitchen has certainly been delivering Micheline star level of food and creativity! Visited on Thursday in early evening to check out their $75 tasting menu which is modern fusion with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai influences. Everything is masterfully prep and beautifully presented. I am already dreaming of returning :) For appetizers, I def prefer the frog legs over the razor clams. The frog was lightly bedded, juicy inside and the Thai style seasoning is def a surprising twist. For secondi, I had the "deconstructed" cauliflower - cooked in three ways (roasted, pickled and puree), dotted with nuac cham and lapcheong aka chinese sausage . Umami alert! It was a symphony of flavors and texture. Don't let the slightly messy look fool you! For main, I gave equal love to the mushroom trio and pork jowl. Both were flavorful in their own way - one earthy, the other scrumptious. Can't really go wrong with either. The wine offering was well curated tho the pour could be more generous - barely 6 oz :/ suggest getting a bottle to share. read more

Taste 4/5 Service 4/5 Value 2/5 Taste: some dishes stood out more than others but overall no duds on the main menu as we basically tried the whole menu. Some highlights: soba with uni ($18 sup.), razor clams, hamachi, trout, mushroom. Some so-so ones: shrimp, beef, cauliflower. There was a jamón app ($19) that's Korean rice cake with prosciutto, please skip, absolutely waste of money... that was the only dud. Service: waited 15 mins after our 9:15 reso to be seated. But service overall was prompt and attentive Value: while most of the food was decent with a few good surprises, at this price point I was expecting either more portion or more hits. Other places with tasting menu at around 1xx per person usually comes with more dishes/portion. Overall, while I don't regret trying out Nudibranch, I'm unlikely coming back soon since at this price point I can easily think of 5+ places that I'd enjoy more and plenty more options yet to try in nyc :) read more
