The food was good. It was probably more fusion than Indonesian. The menu was very creative. Slightly pricy though. Service was decent. And the restaurant was classy too. Overall a solid spot.

I went to The Wayan quite excited since menu looked great and we chose the Chef's Table expecting a more personal and elevated experience. That expectation set the tone for the disappointment that followed. Chef's Table (biggest miss): It's not a "chefs table" in any real sense with just six high stools lined up in a corridor/passageway. Feels awkward, exposed, and disconnected from the actual dining space. We asked to move to the main dining area, but there was clear reluctance and zero flexibility. I do understand there might not be any last minute availability but the hostess looked over worked and not interested in even listening to us. Service: Unpolished and at times intrusive. Staff seemed overwhelmed. Plates were cleared by repeatedly reaching in between us from behind while we were seated on high stools--uncomfortable and poorly handled. Cocktails: Ordered Thorn of Jalisco- blanco tequila, red thai chili, grapefruit, cinnamon. It was just an expensive sweet concoction of grapefruit with no Thai red chili. I doubt they made the same thing that was on the menu. Food (mixed): - Lamb skewers: average.. not as flavorful as expected - Escargot sambal: standout--creative, flavorful, excellent with the brioche - Branzino: very well done, nicely seasoned - Nasi goreng: average.. a bit too oily - Pandan custard: easily the best dish, 10/10 But here's the real issue: The food did not sit well with me. I had pretty bad acidity later that night...bad enough to take Pepto-Bismol. Even the next day, my stomach felt off. That's not something I ignore it does make me question ingredient quality or freshness. Overall: A few strong dishes cannot compensate for a poorly thought-out seating concept, average service, and a physically uncomfortable after eloquence. We had a good time despite the restaurant, not because of it. Wouldn't go back. Definitely skip the Chef's Table. 3/5.

Just had brunch here for Father's Day, and it did not disappoint! As a self-proclaimed French toast connoisseur who travels the city searching for the best, I can confidently say this iteration is hands down one of the absolute finest. For that alone, it's a must-visit. That said, everything we tasted was exceptionally well-executed and phenomenal. Kudos to the staff for creating such a wonderful gastronomic experience!

Really wonderful service- think this is what made the experience. Server was able to go into detail about options and recommendations. Really love the service. Went with a couple of flavorful drinks but the star of the show was the food. Enjoyed crudo, escargot, meat skewers, corn frittata, ribs, and fried rice as well as Ube ice cream with a couple of friends. Tasting option is a lot for one person but able to take leftovers which was nice. Next time would probs just order individually but nice to try everything. Really loved escargot and corn frittata. I don't care if you like Indonesian food, don't like it, have never had it, or other. This restaurant is a MUST TRY. Everything from the drinks, to the food, to the service was top tier. I'm from LA and had a lot of great food on this trip but the lobster noodles I will truly miss. I'm sitting here in LA dreaming of them! Also our server (I think her name was Laura but it's been a few weeks, so I might be misremembering) was a DREAM. So sweet, so accommodating, explained everything and gave amazing recommendations. Must haves: the satay trio (we did chicken, lamb and scallop at our servers recommendation) The lobster noodles (still dreaming of these) The corn fritters (like the most comforting delicious side... I could just eat a plate of these) I will say the restaurant is loud, so not a place for intimate conversations. But definitely so beautifully designed and just a great atmosphere. In a city with amazing restaurants you have a lot of choices... but this was by far the best meal I had in the city.

This spot has been on my radar for a long time, so I finally organized a group dinner here. The interior was lovely with an elegant, classy ambiance. There was a full bar area with lush greenery by the entrance, the space with beautifully lit with pretty lights, and the back where we were seated was comfortable with an intimate, cozy feel. Upon being seated, we were strongly encouraged to order family style, which we had not planned to do. So, we ordered individually and were told we cannot order more food later if we wanted to. This really rubbed me the wrong way and I have never heard of that rule before. It made me feel like they weren't accommodating. There were several dishes that sounded good to me, but I finally went with the Lobster Noodles, which was comprised of Indo noodles, black pepper butter, and Thai basil. The portion size of this was quite small, and definitely not enough lobster. At least the lobster was tender and well seasoned, while the noodles were cooked perfectly and flavorful. I also got to try the Crispy Pork Ribs, which were plated very aesthetically, topped with sesame seeds and in a slightly sweet, multi- layered tasting soy tamarind glaze. The Pork Ribs were satisfyingly crunchy, juicy, as well as delightfully succulent. Service was okay. Our waitress was nice enough, but didn't really care for the push to do family style and being told we could not add on to our initial order. Also, portion sizes were very small, while prices were high. I was disappointed by the experience, and expected more from all the rave reviews. I likely won't be returning.

I feel that this place was a bit overhyped--the lobster noodles, especially. The dish was good but not *that* good. It had a great amount of lobster (I feel that this is becoming increasingly rare in lobster pasta dishes, so kudos to them), but the noodles themselves were far too oily/buttery. It tasted like a cacio e pepe (which I love), but the grease detracted from the flavor. And I was honestly hoping for a little more sophistication in their use of spices and garnishes. Lovely decor (lots of monkeys. I thought this was so fun). Excellent, attentive service. But it was fairly loud--it was hard to hear each other when the restaurant was full (and it was QUITE full at 8 pm on a tuesday!)

Super vibey place with lots of bold, strong flavors. We ordered the chicken satay, lobster noodles, nasi goreng, and roast duck as a party of 3, and we were pretty full after. The service was also very good - after every skewer we finished, a waiter would come and remove it from our plates, which I was really surprised by. Chicken satay - very tender, juicy, and soft. It wasn't like other chicken satays that I've had that can be kinda dry. Lobster noodles - this is what they're known for and I understand the hype. Very flavorful, saucy, and delicious. Not seafoody at all. My favorite dish of the meal. Roast duck - I loved the pairing of the duck with the pear and the herbs. Nasi goreng - compared to the other dishes this one was not as flavorful but still yummy. Lots of bold flavors, so it can be a bit too much / too salty if you don't have other people to share with. Near the end of the meal, I felt like it was a little too salty. Nonetheless it was still delicious and I enjoyed my experience. Definitely do family style here!

Wayan offers an intimate dining experience dimly lit with warm, inviting decor and a stylish bar that sets the perfect tone for a date night. The menu blends Indonesian influences with a modern twist, and every dish bursts with creativity and flavor. The Avocado Gado Gado salad was a standout with the quail eggs and peanut relish. The Seared Black Sea Bass was phenomenal, cooked beautifully with a flavorful sauce that complemented it perfectly. The Caramelized Beef Tenderloin was tender and full of depth, but the real highlight was the Lobster Noodles absolutely delicious. We had ordered the Octopus a la Plancha, which unfortunately never made it to the table but still appeared on the bill. The service was friendly but didn't visit the table as often as would be expected. The main drawback is the portion size relative to price the dishes are on the smaller side, so you won't leave stuffed, but your taste buds will be more than satisfied.

I've been wanting to try this place for a while so my birthday was the perfect opportunity! I was definitely not disappointed as everything I had was spectacular. The two most stand-out items were the scallop satay and passionfruit pandan custard, both of them actually wowed me. The lobster noodles were comforting and decadent and the crab fried rice was neither boring or basic (both of which are fried rice concerns for me). I even tried escargot for the first time and had a pleasant experience. It was also really nice that the restaurant does a birthday treat (mango sorbet with a candle). I will say though, my only complaint was subpar service. Maybe it's because we sat outside or had an early dinner reservation but the waiter was very inattentive and took a very long time to check in on us - whether it was to take orders or receive payment or etc. It also felt like he kept trying to upsell more items, even after we were done ordering. Otherwise, a very successful experience.

This was like... the best meal I've had coming back to NYC after traveling all summer. Like it was actually mind blowing and amazing!!!!! And this is from someone that has lived in Southeast Asia / has visited Indonesia a few times. First off, vibes are vibinggg!!! The dark interior is very chic and classy. Masks you feel like you're in q fancy restaurant in Indonesia! Service was great too. - Lobster noodles: 10000000000000/10 (literally up there for best dishes I've had this year-- and I've had a LOT of good food this year. The noodles are thin and springy, the type you would find in Indonesian nasi goreng or Korean ramen. The sauce is simply sublime-- buttery with a spicy kick. The lobster inside the dish is also very flavorful.) - Satay platter: 9.5/10 (the shrimp, scallop, and beef satay were all soooo flavorful and cooked to perfection. The beef satay was a bit too salty though) - Octopus: 1000/10 (great appetizer with a smoky flavor) - Crispy pork ribs: 1000/10 (the ribs are cooked so well they just fall off the rib. Sauce is a nice Indonesian satay sauce) - Pandan custard: 100000/10 (the creaminess of the custard goes well with the pomegranate on top. A must order) I was honestly not expecting to be this blown away, but it was truly amazing. I'm still dreaming about their lobster noodles!

Note that they have a 10 minute grace period, not 15. Lobster noodles and corn fritters lived up to the hype. The noodles were very buttery instant noodles with lobster , small portion. Everything else was kinda mediocre. The crispy squid was tender and not super crunchy but needed the sambal they had on the side to make it more flavorful. The sea bass was fine, more burnt than I would've liked and the hamachi tartare had a weird flavor, like it had been sitting out for a bit. Very dark inside and good date ambiance. Service was standard.

Fantastic happy hour with unique drinks and tasty bites! My friend and I stopped by on a Friday for happy hour. There was no wait for two bar seats and plenty of space. The interior is trendy and the bartenders were friendly! Food & Drink: - Calamansi Fizz: Super refreshing! Perfectly tart and strong. Delish! - Vegetable Spring Rolls: loved the green chili sauce on the side! - Corn Fritters: Must order! So savory and crispy! Our favorite bite of the night!

We opted for the 15 course dinner that samples through their entire menu. It is a perfect amount of food for two people and I recommend this experience very much. The meal starts with a cozy chicken and noodle broth soup which was so warming and comforting, just what the doctor ordered in this weather. The second round of food was two types of salad and a corn fritter. I loved the pickled salads as they had a nice crunch to them and tasted delicious. The fritters are a good size but a little bit greasier than I liked. The last round is where all the curries are brought out on a hot plate. There's shrimp, lamb, beef rendang, chicken, tofu etc. There's also white rice and skewers of chicken and beef satay coated in a delicious peanut sauce. Some of the curries I liked very much - like the fried tofu and the sauce on the shrimp curry was divine. Beef rendang fell a little flat for me as it wasn't as decadent, thick or spicy like authentic rendang is. The lamb curry had a sweet taste which I found a little odd. The chicken satay was juicy and delicious but the beef satay was rubbery and hard to chew and a weird texture. I definitely expect better from a satay skewer. Our server was kind and kept the flow of the food going. The final course is a little coconut pandan flan which was very very good but the texture is firmer than what I like. Flan should definitely be a bit softer and creamier. Either way it's tough to nail a 15 course dinner expertly but I do think if they made a few needed changes to the quality of food this would easily be a 5 star experience! If you live nearby, definitely give this beautiful cozy family run restaurant a try!!

Side notes: Family-run place, so if you're going to go here with a bigger group, call early to make…read moresure they have the dishes you want. Would recommend the Bakwan, the Empal Goreng, and the Sayur Santen the most, with the Talor Tahu and various Bakwan being very tasty. Rating is for the area (in Queens, this would be an upper 3 as being a milder but tasty Indonesian spot, but worse than Sky/Awang.) I have been to this small family-run Indonesian restaurant a handful of times since my old review back in 2022, and over the many years, I have found some dishes I have loved more than others, of course. From the small plates, I would recommend, as before, the Bakwan for $9, consisting of crispy corn fritters cooked pancake style with scallion. The texture of the dish is wonderful, and the dipping sauces, whether they be the sweet chili sauce or the peanut sauce, work well to help with the slight oiliness. The sate is also pretty tasty. Of the multiple types, the Chicken Satay was the most recent one we had (which is cheaper at $11,) but I think the beef one (for a buck more) is better. We also had the larger Sate Madura a previous time, which was also very tasty. Another tasty dish is the Talor Tahu for $18, listed as a seasoned egg omelete with bean curd, mushrooms, and veggies glazed with Indonesian soy sauce and shallots. The price might look high for a vegetarian dish, but it is quite large, and the mixture of vegetables adds a nice mix of textures, including a good amount of crunch. The sauce is nice as well, adding a slightly sweet flavor, and goes nicely with the soft omelete. One of the most recent dishes I tried here is one of the best, which was the Empal Goreng for $21, listed as sliced beef marinated in sweet Javanese spices pan fried topped with Indonesian soy sauce. There was plenty of beef, which was cut thin and cooked beautifully, with the flavors reminding me a little bit of lemongrass dishes from Vietnamese spots, outside of it also having a slightly spicy kick. There was otherwise some lettuce, and the dish was served with some achar/acar, an Indonesian (and insert ASEAN country here) mix of pickled vegetables including cucumber, carrots, and onions. My other favorite dish here is a vegetarian dish, which is the Sayur Santen for $18, listed as lightly battered broccoli and cauliflower in Indonesian herbs cooked in spiced coconut milk topped with bean curd and carrots. There is a nice mix of textures, with the batter indeed, as listed, being very light, with the cauliflower and broccoli still retaining some crunch. My favorite part of the dish is the bean curd, which absorbs the delicious slightly sweet, and lightly spicy coconut milk. Another group of dishes that tend to be good are the various Belado, a pepper mixture with various spices that is somewhat similar to a sambal. This is available with Ikan, or crispy fish, for $20, or with Terong, or crispy eggplant and tofu, for $18. The crispy fish was a bit less spicy the most recent time, while the vegetables retained most of the kick from previous dinners, so I slightly preferred the vegetables. If there was one part of the menu to stay away from, it would unfortunately be the various kare, or curry. The Beef Rendang for $21, or pieces of beef simmered for hours in coconut milk and spices, is just alright, being a bit too soupy for my style (as I generally prefer drier rendang in general,) with the spices being a bit too light, whether it is the coconut milk or chili. The same can be said for the $19 Kare Ayam, which is also a bit too mild for my liking. From previous memory, I would also not recommend the Ayam Goreng, or their spiced fried chicken as it's a bit dry. The Nasi Goreng, for a variety of prices depending on protein, is also just OK. The dish listed as Indonesian fried rice with protein, scrambled egg, and protein was $18 in our case, for a chicken/ayam version. The portion was plentiful, but it partially lacked the wok hei I associate with this dish. The egg is nice, and there was enough chicken, but it was also a bit too plain. Speaking of light dishes, they have given us the Pandan Coconut Pudding for $7 a handful of times. This is a lightly flavored pudding with a very mild floral (from the pandan) and coconut flavor. Due to the texture and the light coconut sweetness, it reminds me a bit more of some kue you can find in some spots, such as Lady Wong and otherwise. It's a decent final bite. Outside of one particular part of the menu, I have liked this place every time I've been here. The food in general is pretty consistent, outside of maybe the spice level in a dish or two, but this is more expected in a casual spot such as this one. I'll go back again, probably in another few months, and sample more of their dishes. The rating is for the area, as it would be closer to a 4 in Queens, but I would still go back.

I wish it was served with more fresh lettuce as the dish is on the saltier side and deserves some fresh lettuce to balance it out (lettuce wrap style). All in all, a great spot for quick eats and flavorful food!

I stood at the counter patiently waiting for almost five minutes, no one speaking to me and just standing around. I was confused why no one was making my food. Finally the girl at the register asked me if I was waiting for the something, and I said yeah, my food. She then looked down right in front of her face where the orders/receipts pop out and goes, oh, and says aloud chicken curry to the other woman (older than the register girl and a scowl in her face the whole time). It then takes ANOTHER five minutes for her to put together rice and curry chicken. I don't know what she was cooking or why they don't just have a pot of it to serve, but the entire experience is was not pleasant. It makes me regret spending $15 on the bowl (it was tasty just not worth the effort to get it--plus the chicken was kinda dry). I had never been to a Zaab Zaab, but based on this experience, I'm not sure I will try again. Pier 57 has a lot of food options; I would not recommend this place. My daughter got egg noodles with pork belly at Nom Wah around the corner for $19, and I was so jealous! Go there instead of Zaab Zaab.

(Despite that, we opted out of their restaurant week menu and ended up just doing their normal tasting menu for $68/pp. It seemed like the regular tasting menu had a better selection of food. HOWEVER, it is not served on a banana leaf ) The restaurant has a lot of nice decor and is really narrow. But that just means it's a perfect spot for date night The staff were really friendly and nice. For the tasting menu. You get all the listed appetizers/sides, then you choose one of the listed entrees and 1 fixed dessert We ordered: Tasting Menu Padang Style: Appetizers/sides: Baked Razor Clams - sambal butter, coconut crumbs Roasted Brussels Sprouts - fried chili sauce, parmesan cheese Egg Balado - sambal, thai basil Acar - cucumber, cauliflower, pepper Yellowtail King Sashimi - coconut makrut lime broth, blood orange Mushroom Fritters - gulai curry, citrus herbs Asian Pear Salad -citrus, shiso Krupuk tapioca chips Coconut Salem Rice - mixed herbs Entree: Fried Chicken - tomato chili sambal Lamb Ribs - kecap manis, black pepper Roasted Romanesco - coconut, cherry tomatoes Dessert: EsTeler: ube ice cream, coconut, avocado, dragon fruit Although, the food was overall good, I didn't feel like any of the dishes really stood out. Maybe my disappointment of our food not being served on the banana leaf clouded my judgement. (Fyi, the tasting menu did not state it will be served on a banana leaf. I just assumed because the restaurant week menu was.)

Everything was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and my favorite dish was the butterfish. However, I will say that the portion sizes were rather small. Luckily my group ate some food beforehand, but if you're coming here to be full, you'll end up spending a good amount. The restaurant itself was cozy and vibey. I went on a Tuesday evening so it wasn't crowded at all and easy to get a table (reservations were plentiful). I'd recommend giving this place a try!

I'm a total novice to Indonesian food but after really enjoying it at Sumatera, I wanted to try…read morethis place. The restaurant is clean and comfortable and doesn't feel cramped. I ordered the nasi bungkus with fried chicken. This dish comes wrapped in a banana leaf and then wax paper and it's exciting to be able to unwrap it when it arrives at the table. It has a complex heat, tempered with bitterness but is not overly spicy. The fried chicken was incredibly tender- when I attempted to separate the drumstick from the thigh, the bones just pulled right out. The meat is also deeply seasoned throughout. A really fantastic piece of fried chicken. There is ample sauce to season the soft, fluffy rice and the green beans provided a welcome vegetal bite. I loved the hidden hard boiled egg buried in there. I also got a very interesting dessert, Ice doger. It has a base of pink shaved ice and coconut milk and is topped with avocado, black glutenous rice, basil seeds, coconut and cubed white bread. The flavor combination was unique and fascinating. The creamyness of the avocado lends itself perfectly to a dessert, and the grassy vegetal after taste adds complexity. The herbal, sour notes from the basil seeds and the richness of the coconut complement the sweet base, seasoned with condensed milk and the cubes of white bread soak up all the liquid as the ice melts. I loved this dessert. My food took quite a long time to come, but the service was very friendly and helpful and my water was refilled often. The restaurant seemed to be filled with regulars who knew each other and the environment felt warm and homey. Very pleased with my experience and already planning my next trip.

We ordered fried shrimp chips, grilled Pompano fish, meatballs with swallowed meat, crispy chicken skin, and fried savory fishcake combo. My friend said Indonesian shrimp chips were not the same as Chinese shrimp chips. These were bigger and denser than the smaller more delicate ones I was use to. Plus the flavor is stronger. The fish was smoky, crispy on the outside moist and flaky on the inside. The meatballs had that unique texture of bouncy and chewy. It had good flavor. There were two different types of noodles in the soup that the meatballs came in. We were also surprised the fried fishcakes also came in a noodle soup. Apparently, the combo comes with noodles in soup even though that's not what the picture looked like. The crispy chicken lived up to its name; it was very crispy but not a whole lot of flavor. Still the crunchy texture made it addictive. If you like authenticate Indonesian flavors you will definitely be happy here.

Or take the E/F express to 74 St./Jackson Heights & transfer to the R for 1 stop. Then it's a few minutes walk down (Queens') Broadway. Make sure to bring a shopping bag because this is Asian Supermarket central & Thai Pata Market - alongside Chinese Bakeries, Taste Good Malaysian Restaurant, Pho Restaurants - I digress. The organizer of this 15 year old Food Market pop-up, Fefe, is so nice & motivated (the NY Times described her as being proud of sharing Indonesian food and culture & a fan of American bureaucratic systems - only allowing vendors who have all their permits.) their social media is pretty active & hold other festivals at the Indonesian Consulate and at other spaces on Indonesian holidays. About this Vendor Market! It's low-key, family friendly & welcoming. There's bathrooms too. Think PTA Cultural Festival - BUT this is a quality culinary adventure. One Indonesian first-time customer was surprised to see some items that they've only seen when visiting Indonesia & their first impression was that the vendors didn't dumb down the flavors for the Western palette. During my visit, there were 5 vendors & a Sunnyside Reads Org table. I don't know much about Indonesian cuisine, but stews & noodle soups seem multi - ingredient & multi-textured (veggies & crispy toppings), grilled fish & meat skewers, peanut & chili sauces, cassava & sticky rice, coconut milk turmeric broths, palm sugar & pandan. Things I've tried: Taste of Suribaya vendor - Rice Plate: light turmeric rice comes with grilled chicken satay, tempeh (apparently handmade from a Philly vendor), string bean veg stir fry (peanut sauce), a battered fried hard boiled egg. Scoop of sambal chili sauce - Jackfruit Stew (vegetarian): a very mild coconut curry. The jackfruit is cut into thick triangular pieces. There's also cassava, daikon, cabbage, bamboo shoots, tofu puffs, battered fried boiled egg; potato chips & shrimp chips on top. Other Vendor: - Fish "Meatball" in steamed lotus leaf w/ peanut dipping sauce (thought this was going to be a tapioca flour & fish meat item, not what I expected. Very savory, probably good with rice.) Other Vendor: Long lines for Gado Gado (veggie in peanut stew) & Meatball Noodle Soup (& other dishes I wasn't familiar with). Lots of people eating fried fritters & empanada - like pastries. Next time would like to try $17 Beef cube skewers + thick sticky rice (peanut sauce) & the Gado Gado. The Desserts! - The Yeasted Yellow Rice Cake (turmeric, coconut, milk, lime leaf). Kind of like a big slightly tropical crumpet. Similar to the Cantonese yeasted white sugar rice cake. Delish! Had it with tea at home. - $3 Pandan Thousand Layer Tapioca Cake (SO hard to make - even layers & very pretty). Great Flavor & fun to eat. Like a jelly. - Taste of Surabaya: $5 Pandan Crepe (rice flour) filled with grated coconut & palm sugar. Not too sweet! - Lots of people drinking/eating the green pandan-flavored tapioca noodle in coconut milk & palm sugar. Kind of like bubble tea, but not really. Seating: About 5-6 table tables inside & benches lining the front of the room. There's a little patch of front lawn in front of the church, and a picnic table. People are really friendly, sharing tables & chatting about the food. This is true NYC Queens - people of all backgrounds & ages come to eat & are open & interested. BUT I should've paid more attention to the elder Aunties & what they ate (some trying to get extra shrimp chips...others getting prepared meals to-go). They always know the good stuff. Thanks to the lone grandpa near the stage with a mic, singing karaoke off of his phone. Classic. .5 stars off because unless you get there right at opening, the food is mostly lukewarm. But the Indonesian person I met mentioned that since the country is so hot, they think the food (like egg, chicken on rice) is served at a lower temperature. Or maybe things like Gado Gado's supposed to be like a mixed salad. Wouldn't mind a microwave to warm things up though.
