I tried this place for the first time and it was okay, but not a first choice. I ordered through a food delivery company so I'm not such how the inside of the restaurant is. My go-to is the boneless spare ribs and these ribs weren't bad. They're tasteful but aren't sauced. And I can't order takeout without my cheese wontons and these weren't my fave. I like my wontons just a little sweet and these weren't that. The pork bun was good, but it was barely any filling. More bun than anything. Overall, not a bad spot. Just because I didn't enjoy these items that much, doesn't mean that other choices on the menu aren't worth trying. read more

This is the second time I've eaten here. Each time I have had the sesame chicken. It is served deliciously hot and I eat it right there in this very small restaurant. For $10 you cannot beat the price for Brooklyn restaurant food. The serving is large enough for two. This place is awesome, they nail all the staples. The reason they steal my heart is their Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce. It's the true, OG, NY style cold noodles, with nice thick noodles and a peanuty sauce. Tastes like home. General Tso's is always on point. If you like dark meat, you'll love the version here - it's a perfect rendition. If white is more your style, this place does like "General Tso's Lite," and it's so good! Highly recommend any of the "special noodle dishes," like the shrimp and broccoli over "soft noodles," which are the really good lo mein noodles here. The ginger and scallion lo mein is also very good! One of my favorite things here are the BBQ spare ribs, and boneless ribs. They really get a nice char on them, and the sauce is really good. This place is a block away from my house and is open until 11. Need I say more? They are cash only, but they do have an ATM to keep things easy. Service is always quick and the prices are unbeatable. I've come in after a looong happy hour in the city when my eyes were much bigger than my stomach, and still got out for $20. I ended up with low mein, beef & Chinese broccoli and fried rice (and the broccoli came with a side of rice too). I ate well for two days! ;) The veggies seem prepared fresh and things are made right in front of you. Oh my god how has this place NOT been reviewed yet? This special little hole in the wall Chinese restaurant has been shamefully overlooked. I must review. I discovered Number One Garden late one night while hanging out with my friend Alex. Number One Garden is right on the corner of her block and on a whim, I ran inside and ordered some pork fried dumplings. Though skeptical since Number One Garden's decor is not the most welcoming and I feared their meat may actually be rat rather than pork, I took a chance since Alex said it was good and they did not disappoint. Aprox $4 for 8 dumplings which is unheard of unless you head over to Vanessa's dumplings in Manhattan. They were crispy, flavorful and didn't have too much grease. Super cheap and always packed with customers, the line that forms in the evening speaks to the food quality and price. My only gripe about Number One is that they don't deliver to Grand Army Plaza, only a few minutes walk from their location, so if I want my favorite Brooklyn dumplings I have to walk up to Windsor Terrace. 4 Stars! Am I a Chinese take-out connoisseur? No. Do I like getting yummy food fast and cheap? Well, yes. #1 Garden is my go-to place when I not only feel like making dinner, but I also don't feel like making dinner...another night. There is always enough for leftovers, and I've never paid more than $6.25 for my meal. They deliver lightning-fast, and brown rice is no extra charge. I've gotten a decent amount of the vegetarian options, and my carnivorous friends can attest to the fact that they do the standards (sesame, sweet and sour, General Tso's) very well. Delicious. They have a wide array of options, are very cost affordable, and of the times I've been there since COVID started, they've been one of the only restaurants on Prospect Park West with all staff and chefs wearing masks and PPE at all times. We have taken food home from #1 a few times and while not bad, it sure is not #1! One time they forgot our order and this time their "it will be ready in 10 minutes" sounded great but alas was just wishful thinking. When we called in our order, we specifically asked that our moo shu chicken be extra dry. When we got home there was a 1/2 of liquid on the bottom (and yes, I know vegetables secrete liquid when stir fried, but they can be drained before being thrown in the container). Needless to say, the pancakes did not hold up. We also ordered chicken with string beans. The chicken in our moo shu was fair while the chicken with the string beans looked better but was rather tasteless - as was the moo shu. The string beans were nice and crunchy but also quite bland. The brown rice was cooked just right. On the plus side their sesame noodles are less watery than some of the other area takeouts. So if you want a quick dinner and don't want to schlep to Chinatown, #1 has average food and good size portions. On the other hand, if you like bland food, you will love #1 Garden Chinese! read more

This place used to be great. But sadly that last MANY times we've ordered the food has been inedible. Tonight we gave them on last try and they didn't send rice. In this age of instant online reviews where everyone's a "foodie" and overly obsessed with everything they've ever put in their mouth, I think it's time we got a hold of ourselves. This place is a decent Chinese takeout restaurant with reliable, not bad food at super cheap prices. It's not trying to be anything else, nor should anyone expect anything more. Its a run down looking hole in the wall that's looked the same for the past 15 years, with paper menus and a couple of shitty formica tables. Come on. Number one garden doesn't advertise that it has the "best" whatever. No one from New York Magazine ever came here and ate a wonton that resulted In a transcendent plum sauce-flavored vision of peace on earth. Their best advertising is the line of local neighborhood lifetime residents, off duty cops and Holy Name churchgoers ordering fried half chickens and beef and broccoli combos. With all due respect, dear yelpers, this is not the place to order a delivery to your exact specifications as if you were stir frying it yourself. Save that preciousness for a time when you're spending more than six dollars on your dinner. These people crank out like an order every five minutes, and work HARD. I don't think it's fair to knock them if they don't use your favorite kind of chili sauce. I always see the same five staff there working and they never seem to take a break....they're clearly going for volume, not rave reviews of their artisanal egg rolls. If you're really concerned about how you want your dish prepared, opt for takeout, go to the counter and ask the chefs yourself. There's a big open kitchen where you can actually see how all the dishes are made (which is great, as you can see everything is clean). I've made special requests and they will gladly make your dish to order as long as you're not a complete dick about it. A few phrases in Chinese like "hello" and "thank you" go a long way too. Number one garden is the average hard working kid in school who realizes not everyone gets to go to Harvard, and you know what, that's just fine. Leave my kid alone, snobby Park Slope parents! The egg-rolls are excellent here--crispy, fluffy, and hot--but not so good as to make up for the ways in which #1 Garden is otherwise lacking. The way they package the food here must be with only cost-savings in mind: entrees are served over rice in one container, which results in rice soup and dry entrees. I find it hard to believe that with all the business this place does with people streaming in from the nearby subway stop, they really can't afford to put the rice in a carton and fill the container with the amount of entree expected for the price. Aside from the fact that under the current packaging protocol, the rice serves as a sponge, the chicken is always desiccated, as if it had been cooked hours ago (or, worse still, frozen) then flash fried. I've tried both a special entree (basil chicken) and a standard menu entree (chicken with "szechuan vegetables," which merely consisted of onions and snow peas) and encountered the dried-up protein issue in both. Dishes not served with rice, such as lo mein, are more successful. read more

I really just wanted regular lo mein but my boyfriend really wanted chicken chow fun since it was also noodles. When we got it, it was actually a soupy broth with chicken and a side of rice. solid Chinese takeout joint that I like to order from when visiting my family in Brooklyn. the menu is standard Americanized Chinese, but the actual food is much less salty/oily/greasy than your average Chinese takeout place. for that, I'm bumping them up to 4. their Kung Pao chicken is awesome here. probably one of the best Kung Pao chicken dishes I've had, actually. a little costlier than Mr. Tong's (on Fort Hamilton), but the better quality is worth paying for! also, recently I've noticed Mr. Tong's adding more vegetables and skimping on the meat in the meat dishes, but #1 Garden has a perfect balance. read more

Solid Chinese food for the horribly hungry. This is the closest take-out of its variety to my apartment, and I pop in perhaps twice a month for the food. They are incredibly, astonishingly fast.
