I came here with a couple friends after a work outing in Reynoldsburg and enjoyed this blast from the past (complete with - you guessed it - a massive nutcracker collection). Pataskala is supposedly an up-and-coming exurb of Columbus. Evidently, it must be more "coming" than "up" since I can't find much going on there. But before an afternoon of apple picking at Lynd's Fruit Farm, I wanted some lunch. The options are few in Pataskala, and The Nutcracker Restaurant is supposed to be one of the better choices. As far as I could tell, it is the only restaurant that isn't fast food or pizza in town. The Nutcracker is a diner-ish kind of place. From the outside it doesn't look like much. The interior, though, is highly stylized in a '50s diner theme -- counter seating, lots of old signs, chrome everywhere. Lots of joints try this, but somehow it doesn't seem contrived here. The kitsch comes off sincerely at the Nutcracker. As for the food, it's darn good. It's typical diner stuff -- nothing fancy. The sweet potato fries are tasty. The chili is great too. I've been thoroughly disappointed with both my trips to this restaurant. The first time I went with a party of 5 and we were told a table would be ready shortly. 15 minutes later we hadn't been seated and there was an empty booth right near the front, as well as several tables of folks who were clearly done eating just sitting around taking up space. My grandmother asked the waiter if we could slide into the empty booth and pull up a chair to seat our 5th. The waiter gave us an annoyed look before relenting and saying it would be fine. The waitress came and took our order and when the food came out, it was discovered my grandfather's order had been mixed up. The waitress proceeded to blame the mix up on my grandfather despite us all hearing him correctly tell her what he wanted. A few weeks later I returned with my girlfriend and once again, they messed up her order. On top of it all, I found my food to be lackluster both times and obviously the service put a damper on things. I love the atmosphere in the restaurant and that's the biggest compliment I can give it. I plan on returning in the future and hope that these two visits have been aberrations, but I can't say I've been pleased with my experiences so far. read more

I return to Nutcracker regularly. The breakfasts are pretty good - I love the prime rib and eggs, and my wife is partial to the huge cinnamon rolls. I was less enamored of supper - but I need to give them another chance. I used to go here regularly when I could use their wi-fi on my Nintendo DS - I could not find other places where it would work. Now they have changed things and it doesn't work there, and my visits have grown farther apart. The prime rib is a good choice. Our table ordered the Diner Steak, Ham Loaf and Chicken & Noodles. A popular sides were the deep fried corn in the cob (yum!), sweet potato fries, and onion rings. Since we had a birthday boy, the diner treated my Dad to a birthday pie of his choice. He chose the blueberry cream pie with graham cracker crust. My father and his group of senior citizen men have been going to Nutcracker once a week for 5+ years. Recently, as the guys were leaving their waitress, Hank, stopped my father and loudly told him in front of his friends and strangers, that he did not leave her a big enough tip (15%). My father, who is now incredibly embarrassed was verbally forced to give her more money. THEY WILL NEVER BE BACK. Our family and our friends have agreed to never come to Nutcracker until Hank is gone. No one deserves to be publicly humiliated and treated like Hank treats people. read more
