When we decided to expand our 12' x 16' deck out and to the sides, we began calling around for estimates. We heard from the son of one of our neighbors about a guy who did his deck, who was reasonable and ethical. We contact Northwest Custom Deck and set an appointment with him within the week. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Chris, the owner, met with us and thoroughly discussed what we wanted and how he worked, giving us realistic ideas of what to expect and a very reasonable quote compared with others we'd obtained.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We told Chris about our previous nightmare experiences with contractors, and he was very reassuring about his company and workers.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Six weeks later, work began. It took two weeks from start to finish, which included taking a 6-foot fireplace monstrosity down, building the joist (the bones or framework) for the deck, laying the decking meticulously including the "picture frame" , building two stair sets and installing them, and then completing the railing. Chris' design for our deck was beautiful, and he made suggestions along the way for us, completely explaining everything. His work crew, Spencer and Sam, were diligent, meticulous, polite and clean. They were easy to have working on our back deck right outside the windows. They also redid some poor construction done on the original decking that left the deck unlevel, restoring it to building code standards. We could not be happier!!! The design, the workmanship, the communication, and the final product. A 16" x 36" deck, is everything we hoped for. Our next-door neighbors liked the deck so much they hired him to expand their deck. I really can't recommend this company highly enough! Chris came out and gave me a quote significantly less than the others that had come out. .My deck was quite dangerous and an eye sore I have fallen several times . We set up a time and date to get started and payment plans were set up . 10 % was giving first then when it was time for supplies 50% of of the balance and the last was done when the job was completed . Chris's crew were amazing, they were on time, polite cleaned up after themselves everyday . Chris came to the worksite once or twice a day. The materials were top of the line work was done on time. They had to reroute my irrigation system and put the irrigation wires under the deck posts After the job was done, and Chris got paid, there were things that needed to be fixed . We hired Chris to do a decent size deck. 20X16 and prob 10 feet off the ground. He seems to most likely know what he is doing but if you think Chris will be doing the work that's not the case. Never really saw Chris just his 2 workers and they made some bad mistakes which they would not have fixed unless we pointed it out. Which we did. The deck looks beautiful and The work was decent structurally but they failed to really follow through and finish the job right. That's my issue. If your going to start something strong finish string instead of finishing weak! Some common sense things were just missed. In the end we have a deck that we will have to redo in some areas. It is what it is. They made a big mistake on the stairs going down to a concrete landing and basically covered the current concrete landing with the stairs so there was no more concrete landing left to step onto when reaching bottom of steps. All steps should have a concrete landing at bottom. They might have left it as is but we had to point out that it's not right. So they then added a small concrete landing of 2x4 feet and fixed it but only after charging my mother another 4k to put in a small 2x4 concrete pad. 4k for a small pad! What small pad costs 4k! My mom paid it before I even knew about it. If I would have known they were going to over charge that much for Thier mistake I would have just poured it myself for $500 bucks. Needless to say they started strong but ended in a limp! [[HIGHLIGHT]]I reached out several times after the job was done to get an updated invoice of the work and they have not since responded to any of my requests.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In the end I am sure they prob have done good work for some and not for others. Chris and his team replaced our old 10x10 wood deck with a composite 12x20 deck with cedar lat railing, corregated metal cover underneath to keep us dry below, and added stairs. They also replaced and widened our front porch. Chris called his concrete contractor and we got a nice new sealed, aggregate slab. We couldn't be happier. We got everything we asked for, Chris and his build team were easy to work with, and we paid a reasonable price for labor and materials. We were happy to support a local business. He took some measurements and promised to provide a quote. He said he cold book 6 weeks out and the job would take two weeks. We never heard from him again despite repeated phone calls and messages. Would not recommend Chris or his company to my worst enemy! He never once followed thru in a timely manner on anything he said or anything he would do. The ultimate failure was when I called him at 8AM one morning and he said I thought you woke me up to tell him how good my new deck looked with the railing installed. I was actually calling on Friday to tell him the employee who was supposed to show up first thing Monday morning had no shown up. His employee had not reported to work for five days and he didn't even know it. The project included new front deck with railing and a new front porch railing. After installing the deck railing on that Friday before he left he promised to call the following Monday to update me on the porch railing. That was 30 days ago. He has not returned phone calls, e-mails, or text messages. Nothing not a word. At this point all I am asking for is copy of my paid receipt. The deck railing is a Trex aluminum product that is buckling and without a paid receipt Trex will not honor any warranty. A good question to ask Chris before you hire him would be. I should have read reviews first. Chris came out to our house to give an estimate to tear down and replace a 35 year old elevated 700 sq ft deck and a 300 sq foot lower deck. . A big expensive job for sure. He was extremely personable, took his measurements, and we discussed some options. He said he was 9 weeks out and that was OK with us. It might take a week before receiving an estimate. Just as others have reported, over 3 weeks have passed and after polite phone calls, text messages, and emails, we haven't heard a peep from him. If he wasn't interested in the job, he should have been man enough to say something. I was never rude or difficult. Don't waste your time with this guy. read more

Chris was a pleasure to work with throughout our new deck project. He came out to review our project, made some suggestions and had detailed drawings and a quote for us within 24 hours. His guy Christopher (who is an absolute machine) who was assigned to our project started within a couple days, and our project was completed within 1.5 weeks for the removal of two old decks and replaced with a beautiful new large back deck and front deck. We received daily status updates, although not necessary it was nice. When the job was completed the yard and driveway was cleaned up perfectly. I took time off for an appointment for an estimate scheduled for 1:30 in the afternoon. At 1:45, I called and was told that they had forgotten the appointment. Ok - stuff happens. We made a new appointment for not quite 2 weeks later. Yesterday, while waiting for the rescheduled appointment. I received a call from Chris at 1:24 telling me that we were going to have to reschedule our 1:30 appointment because he had just gotten home from another job. I asked if we could reschedule for later that day and he said he would check and call right back. At 3:30 I called to check on the status and went to voicemail. At 4:45, I texted. At 5 pm I sent a note using their online contact. A full day later I have heard nothing from these people. If you want to have two days wasted, by all means try to schedule an appointment with these unprofessional clowns. Not sure what happened. Chris came out and met with us about our deck project. He planned on coming out a few days later to take some measurements but never showed. We called numerous times after that and was told he would come out, but never did. Eventually we never heard from him again. Apparently our business was not wanted. I found Chris and his carpenters to be great to work with. He came out at the appointed time to do an estimate, provided an estimate on the spot for the cost to complete the project, and was able to start sooner than expected on the work itself. I found his prices, and style of communication to be fair, straightforward and honest. On some extra work required for the job, he simply charged his cost on the materials (plus labor). I would especially recommend NW Custom Deck if you would like to do composite decking, as I found them to be better versed (and a more reasonable price) than a few other companies I spoke with.
