This review is for their head spa and basic haircut. I live very close to this salon and have gone a few times. Their hair cuts are always decent so I've gone back. Today I decided to try the head spa which they advertise in the front for $39 and also get my usual cut (straight, no layers, nothing fancy). It's a Monday around 1:30pm and it was empty so they took me in right away with no appointment. They said to do the spa first so I followed them to the basement which was a little sketch but I looked past it. There was a room with curtains and a bed with a sink which is where the service took place. This is definitely no frills and can use a good scrub down and some cleaner sheets and towels. However, the lady who performed the service knew what she was doing and did a great job. She washed and conditioned my hair, gave scalp, neck, shoulder, arms, legs massages. I really enjoyed the experience but the lack of cleanliness took off a star. Next was the haircut. I already got the head spa so my hair was already clean, it was literally just a basic cut and dry of my slightly below the shoulder length hair. I didn't get the lady's name but I think she's the owner. She was very detailed with the cut and took her time. The biggest turn off was at check out. When I asked how much the total was, another lady (3rd one I'm encountering) paused a bit and said $90. I was thinking in my head $51 for my very basic haircut with no wash seemed like a lot but I didn't argue. However, I only had enough cash to tip the stylist but I also wanted to tip the spa service so I asked to tip on my card. The lady pulled out a calculator and added tax on top of my tip. That's when I couldn't take it anymore and argued back that this is not right. I argued with her for a good minute before the manager stepped in and said just let it go. This is a bummer because I was planning to return for future haircuts but this experience turned me off and given that my hair is so simple to cut, I'll be going elsewhere. read more

My kids come here for an affordable basic hair cut (without wash). They say kids cut is $15 (but I think that's mainly for boy hair cuts). They charged me $20 for my 4 years old daughter cause I guess she has longer hair. They were nice and quick. I have seen kids get their hair styled in there before. read more

I went to this place with my friend and Allen cut my hair. He listened to my requests and was very meticulous about what I wanted specifically. He was very nice and I really like the outcome of my hair. He told me about my hair and how I should take care of it. Look for Allen if you go! Merry is AMAZING! She was patient and asked what I wanted. I showed her pictures and she was very knowledgeable offering her advice as to what would look best. Her cut gave my thin brittle hair life with volume and shape. I haven't had such a great hair cut in a long time! She also gave me the most beautiful chocolate brown color with a hint of just enough highlights for dimension. Definitely not a professional salon. Mary, the hair stylist had a friend came in and during the whole process, she kept talking to her and her eyes was not at my son's hair. And we told her that we are pressed for time but she did not care at all. Kept chatting to that lady so loud and very unprofessional. Definitely would not be back. She was so rough on my son's hair and even my son said ouch becuade she was not paying attention at all. She combed it so hard that my son had a little blood on the side. Stopped in after my breakfast next door. They offer ear picking to remove ear wax. Glad i went in. They got me right in. $30 for 30 min procedure. The young lady who handled me really knew what she was doing and they removed so much, I can't believe that was just sitting in my ears. I feel ten times better already. I walked in after being refused a job in my regular salon. Mary welcomed me and she and her team did an amazing job with my hair. I was scared cause i have always worn my hair long but she let me pick a cut and she started cutting... and cutting. She suggested a color and I agreed. This is my first time there and will be my last. My hairstylist's technique was very amateurish, and it was very obvious she lacked formal training. She did not know a basic layer cut, and butchered my hair, which I had taken years to grow out. Mary was amazing! I asked for long layers in the back and short layers in the front. She also noticed that my hair was thick so she helped me thin it out. I've been to multiple hair salons and many don't know how to thin out my hair but Mary did. I also asked about a perm but she recommended me to come back in the fall to get it since I'll be tying up my hair often in the summer. I love that she did not pressure me into getting anything done. In a big hunt for a place to cut my hair, for a reasonable price and thank goodness I found this spot! Located in Bayside, I just walked in the day before my birthday hoping they can take me in and thank goodness they did. Young lady took me right away to the washing area, where she scrubbed and scrubbed. She then told me to sit in the first seat where the lovely William had taken care of my hair cut and blow out. He was very knowledgeable and AMAZING with his cutting skills! I showed him two pictures of the same style and he knew exactly how to cut my hair especially since my hair is over process with color! The WORST service you can ask for. I came in and gave very simple instructions on what I wanted. She said she understood. Then she went freestyle and decided to CHOP EVERYTHING OFF citing that she thought "it looked better this way." She then went on to cuss about me in Chinese to her coworker when I expressed my displeasure assuming I didn't understand her (I did). Not to mention this place is NOT COVID SAFE at all. They literally RIP YOUR MASK COMPLETELY OFF in the middle of the haircut and prevent you from trying to put it back on. The staff also frequently sports their masks below their noses. Months ago I had my hair bleached and dyed at another hair salon and when I went back to get a root touchup, they were charging me $270. Luckily, I found this NY Hair City salon just two blocks away and was welcomed by one of the hair stylists as soon as I came in. I asked for a consultation and she was very accommodating. After taking a look at my hair, she told me the price was $60! I didn't expect an amazing job since it was much cheaper than the prices of other hair salons I had called. But when my roots were done, they matched my hair exactly. This salon exceeded my expectations and it will definitely become my go-to place for root touchups. Highly recommended!! read more

This place is awesome. My holiday party was this week and I couldn't find my curling wand so I thought I'd venture outside my apartment and try to get a quick walk-in blow dry/style. I stumbled upon NY Hair City and luckily enough, they could accommodate me. I forget my stylist's name, but he was a man and it started with M First, he gave me a thorough washing and conditioning with a head massage. Then came the styling. He first blow dried my hair and gave me a amazing beach wave-style curls. It was perfectly styled and lasted the whole night. And the best part? It was only $25! I couldn't believe it. I have had similar styles done at other salons for $80+ ... I have also used those blow dry bars for $45+ and I would definitely choose this place every time. WARNING: DO NOT GO TO THIS HAIR SALON!!!!! THIS IS THE WORST HAIR SALON I HAVE EVER BEEN TO IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. 1) TERRIBLE hair cut skills. A guy cut my hair and he cut it TOO short. I told him exactly what I needed at the beginning (do not cut my hair too short) but he kept cutting my hair. I told him to stop cutting but he ignored me and kept cutting my hair saying "It will be nice. Do not worry". My hair looks REALLY terrible. It is also UNEVEN. My hair is super straight but he used an iron to straighten my hair. No other hair stylists did that to me before in my whole life. I told the receptionist that I am VERY unhappy with my hair and asked for a refund but they didn't listen. Instead they said my hair looks very nice. Now I have the MOST TERRIBLE HAIR CUT in my entire life. 2) HORRIBLE customer service. Once I entered the hair salon, they let me sit in the chair to wash my hair. They left me there for about 10 minutes without saying anything. I was lying in the chair the whole time. Once they came, they started to wash my hair very aggressively. The water was hot. The salon is very clean and the employees are fast working. Both times I came I was a walk-in with long hair needing to be dyed back to black and they only took 1hr- 1hr & 30 mins. They cover up bad dye jobs really well and got rid of all my split ends! I told them to only cut half an inch and that's exactly what she did, usually other places cut off more without consulting me. Mary took me right away. Showed her what I wanted done and she perfected it the way I wanted it. Katie her assistant helped along the way. It was really a very long double process. I wanted a brunette highlights and trim. Prices are affordable and worth to spend. They take their time and very attentive. They offer you beverages as your waiting. I came in with uneven hair color and left with a perfectly ombréd dye job! I had messaged NY Hair City on Yelp for a 5pm appointment on a Wednesday and they quickly sat me down and discussed my needs as soon as I walked in. Just like some of the other reviews left for the shop, I was a little worried about the language barrier but I was determined to get my hair done. Due to a previous dye job involving highlights over 6 months ago, my hair was washed out, brassy, and uneven. Jin was able to even out my hair and give it a much more natural gradient! I have the staff a picture I had found on yelp from NY Hair City and they quickly noted that Jin was the one who had done it, so I was excited to know I would be in good hands. He was very attentive and made sure to check up on my hair. I ended up making him stay much later than the rest of the salon crew (ending at around 8:30 even though the shop closes at 7). I felt so bad for him and even though I could tell he was getting a little tired and frustrated with my hair, it was easy to see that he was still just as invested as when he started. I could tell he really cared whether my hair would come out well or not. And it worked! He was so proud of his work on my hair that he took some pictures and a video to show off the dye job. Kevin was so sweet and did an incredible job! He understood exactly what I wanted right away. I asked for an inch off and he gave me an inch off. I asked for long side bangs and he gave me long side bangs, not the fringed Joan Jett bangs every other stylist has always given me. I asked if they had availability for a haircut since it was already 5:30pm on a Saturday and I didn't have an appointment. After taking off my hat and showing them my hair I was taken to shampoo station by Ken. He proceeded to thoroughly wash and condition my hair. I later showed him a picture I had found online for my ideal pixie cut. Ken made a few suggestions and in no time I walked out with exactly what I asked for. I cannot recommend this salon enough. My stylist dedicated a good 45 minutes total on me. While the style wasn't exactly what I had asked for (chalked it up to language barrier), it still looked pretty so I left pleased. Tried this place out as I heard wonderful things....and I had a great experience. I showed my stylist (forgot her name) a picture and she re-created what I wanted and then some. She was creative and has an awesome personality. My perm took a few processes and almost 3 hours, but she was so patient and I didn't feel rushed. The attention to detail and professionalism are fantastic. Prices are reasonable and staff was very professional. I almost didn't want to post a review here because this would be my secret go to salon....I hope they're services doesn't change when everyone finds out how great they are.
