Okay, no one told me that this place existed! I found this by not going my usual way to get home. There is only one other Jamaican restaurant that I know of in Suffolk and it is beyond horrible. I had to stop and had to check this one out. I got stewed chicken and the dregs of the curried goat. The stewed chicken was amazing. I got the large plate which fed three people!! It had great depth of flavor. The curried goat was just about gone but I took the little that they had left. It was not shy with the spices and, after trying it, knew why it was a hit. I am glad I got what was left because a lady came in and wanted to purchase whatever they had. She knew exactly what she wanted. That speaks volume to the quality of their food. Now, the issue I have is that there weren't many offerings. Most of the hot table was empty. I said to the friendly lady who was serving, "I know this must be good because there is nothing left." She smiled. Yet, according to some posts, this seems to be an issue. The good thing is that what I did get was wonderful. I will be coming back to hopefully try to try more of their food, if available. For now, I am definitely impressed with this little restaurant. read more

Went for breakfast and ordered ackee and salt fish with callaloo w/om pc of brown stew chicken a YAAD style pineapple ginger drink. I have been searching for authentic jamaican Breakfast for years out here and NOW I can stop the search, as it was EXCELLENT!! best boil banana yam i've had ina while and really appreciated how well cooked and flavorful it was and not spicy (i likea but of more scotch bonnet personally) but the flavor profile was dead on! delicious! and I highly recommend NYAM SUM! Here we go; Someone recommended this restaurant because it was in the area of work in Central Islip. So I decided to visit the restaurant. It was very clean. Customer service was great. My wife works long hard hours in nearby Melville... she is proudly from Jamaica and celebrates her heritage cooking for the family and sharing her homestyle recipes and techniquest so we can try to cook as well as her... When she is working I like to buy her lunch... we have tried a lot of the area Jamaican places and she is grateful for the food but it can't compare to her home cooking... So, with that said, today is our second order from Nyam Sum... and the food is, in her words, "Legit Yardie Grub." If you don't speak Jamaican Patois, that's praise... and she doesn't give it lightly... trust me... been married to this wonderful woman for 27 years... she doesn't give praise like that lightly- especially for food. This establishment has been in the neighborhood for a while and have never tried it. Needless to say it's a gem. Food tastes so good! I had the Rasta pasta with chicken. It was so so good and flavorful. The portions were great and I even had leftovers. We got two large dinners which were beyond huge of the jerk chicken and stew chicken. This was my first time having nyam sum, I was born in Jamaica so I know what real Jamaican food taste like. This is not good jamaican food. I ordered jerk chicken and white rice, the jerk chicken was uncooked and had no flavor, so I threw it out and went back inside to order a beef patty because I thought that was a safe option, I was very wrong, the beef patty was disgusting. I'm giving this place 2 stars because the curry chicken lacked flavor, as if it had been watered down throughout the day, and the meat was a bit mushy. The rice and peas with cabbage were also quite bland, unfortunately. We were so sick of the Jamaican restaurant a couple of miles away on 111, so I couldn't wait to try what Nyam Sum had to offer. First off, the name of the restaurant is amazing. All my family and friends loves it. They really put themself at a great location on Suffolk Avenue, and having themselves in a "strip" mall with foot walkers, too. Their sign is big enough so people can see from the road, and it's right across the street from neighborhoods. So my boyfriend and I finally checked out this place. He's never had Jamaican food - so I thought we'd try it. The man that was helping us, one of the owners - his name was Kirk. He was the nicest man, greeting us when we walked in, extremely friendly, and very welcoming. It threw me back because you don't usually get such great welcoming like that in any restaurant. He was patient while decided what we wanted. My boyfriend was able to look off the menu because it was easier for someone who has never ate Jamaican food. Their menu has a WIDE variety of choices, it's actually shocking. He ended up getting the Jerk chicken, he doesn't like spice, but Kirk said he'd be okay and I was told by my bf that the "spice quality" was just right enough and delicious. And I got the Curry Goat which tasted phenomenal (and WASN'T full of bone like I normally get at the other place). Also, got the bun and cheese which was on point. The plantins were delicious along with the cabbage, which was seasoned and perfectly made - like I've never had them before. They do take card as well in case you Yelpers were wondering. I'll be spreading word around about this place - They set a great first impression to us. Not only do I recommend this restaurant because the service and the food is great. But I will 100% support anyone in business who put their life on the line and served for this country - that to me deserves more than the 5 stars I can provide. read more

Here's the Scoop: This is a new Jamaican Restaurant in my area. My honey and I went to order 4 dinners to see just how good it was. It's located off of Suffolk in a mini mall that houses Subway, 7-Eleven and a Halal Chain. Upon entering small dining will seat about 6-8 people . Large electronic menu over the counter/ordering area. Staff seems to be a Mom/daughter setup. There were no paper menus available to peruse through so you had to quickly see the prices from the electronic menu. On the side of the counter a chalk board displayed the menu for today without prices. Sizes for dinners were medium and large I believe. We chose large. So our order was 3 Oxtail & 1 Curry Goat Large dinners. You have a choice of white rice or peas & rice. We chose peas & rice. The dinners were accompanied with sautéed cabbage and sweet plantains. The portions of meat and rice were reasonable but you only got 3 slices of plantains which is per usual. Oxtails was tender, rice & peas fluffy and plantains fried nicely. My problem was not enough seasoning for my palate spices were there but plain. So I had to sprinkle some salt on it. Oxtail dinners cost $21.00 each, Curry Goat $18.00. While we waited to order quite a few people came in. So they're definitely going to need more help at the counter. Our bill came to $87.99 for fast food. I was shocked!! Will I return I don't know yet. Did I enjoy my meal yes after I sprinkled salt on it. Overall I think it's pricey however portions were a nice size. I hope this restaurant lasts because it's a nice change of pace to add to what's already here in Central Islip. I want to taste a meat patty or soup. The food had zero taste, all pepper and no flavor, the soup was sweet and very thick, too much pumpkin. I'm currently up at 1 am writing this bc I'm on the toilet!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The worker asked what I wanted and proceeded to help the other customer before me. I walked out and will NEVER purchase from them again. I will also tell my family and friends not to do the same. You opened a restaurant in a community rich in Caribbean and Hispanic cultures, it's called supply and demand ( pay the extra cost for popular food items). Bottom line: Local Chinese restaurants don't run out of fried rice, Pollo Campero doesn't run out of chicken. The lack of customer accommodation is unacceptable. Please assess your customer service and level up your supply & demand strategies for the community you serve. Being from brooklyn where jamaican food is everywhere. Peppas and nickys are my top favorites. I was eager and excited to see that i didnt have to drive to bk for jamican food. Black owned business i went to support. It was clean and nice, workers friendly. Beef patty was good soup was good. The meals lacked something seemed so bland. Need more spices when i say spice i dont mean just pepper. I guess they are catering to the neighborhood assuming they dont want things too hot. But you can find a happy medium.
