I've been seeing Dr. Wickwire for over two decades, as certain skin issues require lifelong management. Throughout the years, I have been consistently impressed with his state-of-the-art knowledge, patience, and care. What I hadn't experienced until recently was the trusted care of two of his colleagues: Dr. Neal Ammar and facial plastic surgeon Dr. Sherif Ammar. I want to give them the recognition they deserve with this personal review, which I'll also share with Beach Cities Dermatology. Bottom line: no matter how much progress has been made with skin cancer treatment, it's still one of those phone calls nobody wants to receive. While I know there are greater struggles in life, even the most health-conscious among us can find the diagnosis unsettling. Suffice it to say, continuing enhancements in procedures such as Mohs surgery have become more commonplace than previously known. And now, it was my time. I was called a couple of days later with reassuring words from the path report. The office is conveniently located and the parking lot ample, with ramps for mobility needs. Unlike many professional offices, the waiting room looks like a stylish, upscale yet unpretentious doctor's office, not a skincare products boutique. Reception told me that the dermatologist had set aside a specific amount of time for my appointment and that I would need to reschedule. I understood and rescheduled the appointment for a couple of days later. I attended the rescheduled appointment and paid my bill in full for the procedure at the office. At no point during my initial phone call, when I rescheduled, or when I was physically in the office for treatment was I told that I would be charged a no-show fee. This was especially confusing because I had called ahead to explain that I would be late and was instructed by the office to reschedule. Weeks later, I was charged a $50 fee for the original appointment. If there was a cancellation or late-arrival policy that applied in this situation, it should have been clearly communicated when I called or when I was in the office for my rescheduled appointment. I could have understood the charge if it had been explained at the time, but instead I received a message weeks later stating that finance charges would be applied to an unpaid no-show balance I was unaware of. Very disappointing experience. It feels like the practice is more interested in collecting $$ fees than treating patients fairly. I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Somehow she thought it was a good idea to get an attitude by raising her voice at me when I'm not even a patient at this point yet, in fact I will not EVER be a patient there if this is the way they treat people. She told me "I can't just throw you on his schedule" then proceeded to argue w me as I had mentioned to her I've done this for a living over 28 yrs so she decided to throw it back in my face by saying "well if you do this then you know PPO's don't require referrals, assuming that's what I had. My current insurance is not requiring "referrals" any longer but I'm guessing she doesn't have a clue about that either. I'm so disappointed as I have gone through cancer not once but twice (this didn't move her to even apologize what so ever) I DO NOT recommend this office at all if you are looking for a professional one that actually cares about the patient. In the end she continued to raise her voice, giving me an attitude as if this wasn't a place of business. I feel sorry for the Dr having this type of staff working for his practice. I will also be contacting the insurance commissioner that they are contracted with regarding the way these 2 calls were handled. I have gone to at least 6 doctors and NONE of them helped me solve my problem. My hands would crack, bleed and flake and suffered with this for years, it was embarrassing handing money to cashiers. I finally went to Dr. MacDougall in Manhattan Beach and after two different creams Dr. MacDougall had one more magic trick in his arsenal AND that finally did the trick, I was cured AFTER JUST TWO WEEKS!!!! It was an expensive cream that he had to get approval from my insurance company, but he was eagerly willing to do the paperwork to help me. I cannot praise him more highly; my skin irritation has not returned and it has been about 3-4 weeks. HALLULAH My husband is a patient of Dr. MacDougall too and he also has high praises for him. It takes a while to get an appointment BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. HE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. I have been a patient at this office since 2021 and previously saw a PA who was kind, personable,…read moreand efficient. Unfortunately, she no longer works here. I scheduled an appointment in 2026 with Dr. Michelle Cheng instead. Dr. Cheng herself was efficient and prescribed the medications I needed, which is the only reason this office is receiving one star rather than zero. The rest of the experience was completely unprofessional. When scheduling, I uploaded my new insurance and my appointment was confirmed, leading me to believe the office accepted my insurance. Upon arrival, the front desk was chaotic. Patients were being called out by full name and even MRN numbers within clear earshot of the waiting room, which was extremely concerning from a privacy standpoint. I provided my insurance card and later asked for it back, at which point a front desk employee named Rebecca responded with visible attitude, stating she could not run my insurance because her computer was not working and repeatedly said they "just needed to get me into a room." I specifically asked whether the provider I was seeing accepted my insurance and was told yes. After a rushed and impersonal visit, I was left alone in the exam room for another 10 minutes without being told my appointment had ended. During this time, I overheard multiple conversations about other patients in the hallway. When I returned to the front desk to retrieve my insurance card, I was told my insurance "wouldn't go through" and was informed that it was my responsibility to ensure the provider was in network. I explained that I have PPO insurance and that my coverage is active and used regularly. Despite this, I was told my insurance was "not valid" and that they "hoped it would work when billing got it." Overall, this visit was disorganized, unprofessional, and deeply disappointing. I will not be returning.
