I had a great first experience with Doctor O'Brien. After visiting him 3 times I had to give him & his team in the front office a 5 star. Each visit I was able to see him within 30 minutes, first time was for my ankle injury and second/third time was for bronchitis. Doctor O'Brien was professional, nice and you can tell he's very experienced by his explanations. Let's not forget the cost, it was very good inexpensive, consolations or X-Ray. I decided to write this review, because I`ve read the negative comments about Dr O`Brien Senior. I visited him a few days ago. I had bronchitis and a fever. First of all, they were opened on Sunday, and the waiting time was about 10 min. The doctor himself was so personable and kind. He gave me prescriptions and some advice on what to eat while I`m sick, and what vitamins to take. It`s not a fancy clinic, it is rather a neighborhood doctor, who not only treats you, but has a great caring attitude. Thank you so much Dr O`Brien! read more

I am so happy that I was able to find Dr. O'Brien! He was truly my savior. Upon arriving at 6 pm there were a few other people already waiting. Dr. O'Brien welcomed us all in with a nice smile and friendly welcome. His waiting room is small but cozy and really has a nice, relaxed feel. The paperwork process was SO simple. It can be nightmarish filling out paperwork at other places, especially when you're uninsured. He only asks for basic information, you don't feel like your signing your life away. His fees are really reasonable for the care you receive and is a flat standard rate of $100 for the first visit and $50 for a follow up if needed! (Accepts cash and card) Patients are seen on a first come, first served basis and didn't take long to get to me. He was very thorough in examining me and made sure to ask as many questions as possible and talk with me in order to determine the best solution. And he took into account that I was uninsured when recommending what to do. He called to check up on me every day until I was finally feeling better , even when he was sick himself. I'm not sure that there are too many other doctors out there as kind and caring. I was definitely in good hands and will be returning if I ever need care again! read more

Needed help for my elderly mother late at night. This doctor was open and able to help us with less than a 15 minute wait. She has dementia but he made her comfortable, gave us the prescription and we were on our way. My brother was cleaning his ears and got the cotton part stuck in his ear. He could have waited until the next day but I noticed that Dr. O'Brien was open and decided to give him a call. We were able to be seen within a few minutes. He was really nice and was able to get the cotton out of my brothers ear within seconds! My brother felt so much better after seeing Dr. O'Brien. I want to start off by saying that I really don't like to write negative reviews of small businesses like this but in this one circumstance I feel the need to. I have been here once before and was seen by Dr O'Brien Jr. who did an excellent job. I will say that they have both been very nice and pleasant to deal with. The other day my toenail was ripped back. I went to see Dr. O'Brien Sr. to see what I should do. As mentioned before I am happy with his communication. My concern began after he took my bloody tissues in his gloveless hand to throw them out. At first I thought that ok this isn't that big of a deal because he is going to wash his hands and put gloves on. Well, he did do a cursory wash eventually after prodding around my toe. We decide to pull the toenail out the rest of the way. This is where I got really concerned. He did pour alcohol over my toe before getting ready to pull out the nail. Still no gloves (still not too big of a deal). He injects the first syringe of local anesthesia. There isn't enough to numb my toe. He takes the same needle that has been poked into my toe at least 4 times and without wiping it off plunges it back into the bottle of anesthesia (I think it was lidocaine) three separate times trying to get more into the same used needle. I ask him if this is sanitary as this is the same bottle he uses for all his patients. He says yes and then proceeds to wipe off the needle with a bloody cotton swab (which did have some alcohol on it). I then ask him again if it is sanitary and he says "yes it is fine as we will be using most of this bottle." After unsuccessfully trying to pull my nail (which isn't big of a deal), we leave my nail somewhat attached and call it a day. That same bottle of anesthesia still had plenty left in it. He is the nicest, sweetest, doctor I have ever been to, and with his years of knowledge and experience I had no doubt I was getting a 100% accurate diagnosis. I called ahead of time, to see if an appointment was necessary, and Dr. O'Brien himself answered the phone. He told that no appointment was necessary and to come on in. Later that week he called my home to see if everything was OK. I thought was an awesome experience that we don't get with our own family practice. Who the hell wrote these reviews?! I am sitting here with my friend while a very old man (whose son owns this business and is the actual doctor) is butchering his knee as he tries to remove staples from his knee. His hand is shaking, he can't see what he is doing and my friend is in a LOT of pain! If you own the practice, don't have your elderly father cover the after hours clinic for you. I mean he's very kind and sweet, but come on! He keeps missing the staples because he can't see and is quite literally ripping the knee back open. And he's tripping over the light, he really shouldn't be doing this! We keep asking him to call his son, the doctor, but he is saying "no, no, we'll get this" My friend had staples removed in his other knee a week ago and they came out without any problem and with very little pain. Is this why they charge cash here before they agree to see you? When my daughter fell over the back of the sofa and needed stitches in her head, Dr. O'Brien Jr was the one to help us. He was kind and calm, and helped me through such a traumatic experience. We came back in twice to have stitches removed, and every time he was kind and caring, informative and helpful. I came back a fourth time during a scavenger hunt, and asked if we could take a picture of my daughter (sans stitches) in her Doctor's Coat costume to fulfill part of the hunt. What a find! My husband and I are new to the area and we didn't have a doctor in Castro Valley. Well, my husband sprained his ankle and we needed someone ASAP. I am so glad i came to Dr. O'Brien! I travel for work, and was debating whether i should wait to see my primary doctor at home instead, since I'll be going home in a few days anyway.. But i felt so much worse as the days dragged, and decided to look for urgent care around the area. I found excellent reviews on yelp so I decided to try Dr. OBrien. The yelp reviews were right! Amazing doctor... I was in desperate need of antibiotics, and wasn't really looking forward to waiting forever in the ER or paying $$$ (additional stress). So i went to Dr. O'Brien, and got seen right away. He prescribed me antibiotics, and told me to take one as soon as possible. He referred me to the pharmacy across the street.. As i got to the pharmacy, they said that they were already expecting me, since Dr. O'Brien has already notified them that I was coming... Wow! Plus... He even called me the next day to check up on how I was doing.. First class care indeed!! ... I don't know if you'll ever find this kind of care anywhere else... Dr. O'Brien (elder) was the nicest, most genuinely concerned western doctor I've ever met. I had a truly outstanding experience at this clinic. I typically avoid anything to do with western medicine. I eat 100% organic fruits and veggies and only pastured, sustainable meats (Weston A. Price diet). And I'm under regular upper cervical chiropractic care, but I recently got an infection that only got worse and worse and worse. I tried supplements and probiotics and fermented foods, but it was pretty bad and at the point where I was in extreme pain, I caved and decided to get medical care. I was pretty upset that I had to sacrifice my gut flora to take antibiotics, but it's better than having a killer infection. Seeing Dr. O'Brien made my experience a positive one! Highly recommend!!! Dr. Arthur O'Brien was perfect. First like everyone say you call and you get the actual Dr. on the phone. I thought I needed an x ray for my finger and their machine was down for a few days. Decided to go anyway. He looked at it and quickly was able to tell me that it wasn't broken. Matter of fact I needed to do the opposite of what I was doing. No more Webmd self diagnoses for me. My brother is uninsured and I bring him to Dr. O'Brien for medical needs. $100 gets a non rushed appointment with the doctor which is just a bit more than the co-pay if he had actual insurance. Dr. O'Brien is an old fashioned doctor (think country doctor) with a no nonsense approach that I find appealing. This is a doctor that actually listens to you and isn't in a rush to get you out the door. I suspect a lot of general practitioners would run their practice the same way if it were not for the treadmill the insurance companies put doctors on. Word of warning: the doctor only takes cash, which is why the costs are so low (no insurance or credit card fees) Wait times are minimal or non existent even though it is drop in with no appointments. read more

Thank God for O'Brien After Hours Urgent Care!!! As a young, non-insured, generally healthy person, the rare time I know I need to see a doctor scares the you know what out of me, simply because of the COST. The time came, I panicked, but thankfully my boyfriends mom mentioned this place (and there had even been an ad in the paper the same day for it, so....meant to be). $100 flat for most visits. I got there right when they opened, there was already one person ahead of me, so I got seen about 20 mins later (probably the average per person time). Dr. O'Brien (the elder) was the most caring doctor I've ever had, even WITH insurance! My visit was pretty straight forward, I left with antibiotics and a cream prescription as I had expected, but I never felt rushed or pressured. Here's the best part: the next day, Dr. O'Brien called and left a message wanting to check in, and suggesting to use some warm compresses. The NEXT day, he called AGAIN to see how everything was going!! You cannot beat that service. I will be back!! read more

What a business model! You walk in. Fill out a one page info sheet. Not 20 pages the way you would at an ER (including your mother's dog's birthplace). Just age, meds taken, significant history and THAT'S IT. Saw Dr. O'Brien last night for a back spasm that was practically a religious experience. Waited no longer than it took me to fill out the single page. DONE in 20 minutes! Within 40 minutes I'd picked up my prescriptions for muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory and was home and on my way to a good night's sleep in 90 minutes. Excellent bedside manner. Cuts straight to the chase and gets it done. It seems to be the only one of these for miles around. If I'd gone to a hospital based urgent care, I'd've paid $2K at least and sat around for hours. I visited the older Dr. Arthur O'Brien. He's the nicest and most experienced guys you'll ever meet. He's been a doctor for nearly 40 years and his son owns the office. The doctors here actually answer the phone themselves too. And this is the best doctor's visit i've ever had. The place looks very homely like a modern living room you see out of a catalogue. I needed a doctor on a Friday night when my daughter's fever reached 103.5. After reading reviews for Dr. O'Brien on Yelp, I called and spoke with the doctor directly, which is a nice change. We were able to get in right away, see the doctor, get to the pharmacy for an antibiotic and back home, all in less than 2 hours. He was a good listener, thorough, knowledgeable and caring. I would go back to him again, no question. The office is warm and comfortable, not impersonal as are many modern doctor offices. He also helped me with something I needed without an additional charge. They only take cash or credit cards and you'll need to file your own insurance claim, something I haven't done in years. I never liked going to hospitals but O'Brien After Hours made me change how I feel about going and getting a check up. Made a phone call to ask if I would be able to get seen by the doctor. Seeing that it is an urgent care I thought it would be similar to an ER where I would have to wait long hours but he said that there was only 1 person ahead of me if I were to come now. I only waited 30 minutes before I was next to be seen by the doctor. Very friendly, made you feel at home, reassured my issue, had a nice conversation, prescribed me meds, and I was on my way. Quick and easy transaction and he let me know that I was more than welcome to call and ask questions about my health issues if any were to come up. I would have probably spent at least 6 hours in the ER across the street and not received the high quality care I received from Dr. O'Brien. He offered me to call back if I had later problems (I did not). Highest regards for Dr. O'Brien. I was MUCH more comfortable with an MD with decades of experience that I could speak intimately with. Who is writing these five star reviews?? The O'Brien doctor I saw tonight looks to be 100 years old. He is hunched back over and limping. The medical facility is a warp in time and this old man is mean spirited. I'm a Registered Nurse and after I refused to see an AWFULLY expensive orthopedic surgeon per his request for a hamstring muscle pull at the gym tonight, he got mad and shouted, "GET OUT OF HERE!" This is horrible treatment of a patient, especially a nurse who knows better that an IM or Primary Care physician can treat a hamstring pull with a steroid injection, ice/heat, pain meds and rest. He didn't even have any ice packs in the office, no ace wraps, nothing at all for a strain? Takes this advice "all," stay clear of this urgent care or you'll be sorry, read the other one star from 2012 where he tried to remove staples and his hand was shaking. I believe that reviewer since I witnessed how old and febrile this physician is and he needs to retire. Several words come to mind with this Doctor. Doctor O'Brain is sincere, caring, warm, gentle, accommodating, professional, intelligent. It hard to find a old fashion doctor who genuinely cares about your condition or problem, ie.. chief complaint. He takes all the time as needed to talk to you with respect, dignity, and love. we went to dr. o'brien on a sunday and he was a lifesaver. my son had an ear infection and it was really bothering him not wanting to wait until monday to see a doctor. so we went to see dr. obrien who has a walk-in clinic. he was the only one in the office and saw him right away. he diagnosed his infection and we were on our way with prescription in hand all within an hour. i would highly recommend this clinic with its old fashioned care. read more
