We've been here multiple times in the last few years and the care has been great! Most recently, I went in for shortness of breath and upper back pain with mild congestion. Lucky me! Urgent care opens at 8, so they registered me, but I had to either wait outside or in my car because some of my symptoms match Covid. I really didn't think I'd make it back to my car with the shortness of breath, so I chose the wait outside on the side option while I was triaged by phone. It was so cold out there!! Brrrr! I'm totally understanding of the reasoning and system, but maybe an outdoor heater nearby? I was triaged quickly by the nurse on the phone and he was great! They had me in a room by 8:30, so it wasn't too bad. In the room, nurse took all the vital information and did the Covid/RSV/Flu swab and then I waited for the doctor. Doctor Lee was great! Very patient and great listening. She recommended an X-ray, which I did and checked everything else. As soon as the X-ray came back, lucky me...I have Walking Pneumonia. She had medications prescribed and after care papers complete and I was on my way home by 9:45ish. Staff gets 5 stars! The only downsides were that the X-ray tech wasn't very friendly and that I had to sit outside (which I understand) and freeze (an outdoor heater in the outdoor waiting area would be helpful). read more

I had a terrible, unethical, and harmful experience at Sutter Health urgent care in early February in which the doctor tried to tell me I don't actually have migraine disease based on her false understanding of migraine disease (she said the fact that my migraine sometimes is felt on the left side and sometimes on the right side means it's not migraine, which is simply untrue as 85% of people with migraine (not even just severe cases) have it bounce sides - I even showed her medical research disproving her false understanding, which she disputed) and then tried to tell me I didn't have a dental infection after I was diagnosed by xray and an endodontist with one. When I was there with the flu simply to get a script for Tamiflu. Why was she even trying to invalidate my migraine and dental infection diagnoses!! Sutter sent me a feedback form the next day. I filled it out with my experience and said I needed a call back from them to discuss. No call back. I called Sutter a week or two later, and the person told me to fill out a form on the patient relations site in order to try again to get a call back. I did. I STILL haven't been contacted by them. I called them today (the number on their patient relations site) and asked to speak with patient relations. They sent me to primary care, who told me there is no way they can connect me with patient relations. They told me they would transfer me to urgent care. I said I don't want to be transferred to urgent care. I want to be transferred to patient relations. The person then transferred me to urgent care against my explicit request, and the urgent care person is now giving me the phone number to contact patient relations, which is exactly where I called to end up in this cluster fu*k!! And then the urgent care person threatened to hang up on me when I tried to explain my complaints. And then she did hang up on me when I was answering her question of what number I had originally called. This is sooooo disrespectful. Riddle me this: How on earth can there be no way for a PATIENT to be put in contact with PATIENT FRIGGIN RELATIONS?! And why would you make your patient relations number a disrespectful maze of rude people passing you along and then asking you to keep doing that in perpetuity. (I've now been on the line with them for 30 mins+, and this is my fourth attempt to give feedback. All while I am sick in bed with the disease the urgent care Dr was disputing I have. This is one example of how the healthcare system makes the sick sicker and gets away with migraine stigma. @sutterhealth - you now have me making three complaints instead of one. read more

I received a great experience from this Urgent Care. I came here due to pain on my left thumb. Splinter was embedded on my left thumb last January which I took out at that time. But suddenly my left thumb started hurting and couldn't even use this finger in keyboarding at work so I decided to be seen in this facility. Once again, this facility never failed me, the medical assistants : Alani Cham and Monika Lehane are very welcoming, passionate, friendly, and caring. They made me feel at ease and reassured me that the Urgent Care doctor is there to help me. Then, I met Dr Ami Yamamoto. She is very informative and gave me several options on how my concern can be treated . When I decided and selected my preference, she did it efficiently and effectively. She was able to remove a significant length and very fine splinter from my thumb which I didn't have any idea that it is still there for 4 months. She definitely has a 20/20 vision or way better than that since she was able to see and dug it out. All I can say is that the medical assistants and the doctors are excellent here!!! Here's how t it works: Pre-screening questions and touch less temperature. Appointment check-in. You receive written "do-it-yourself " written instructions. Wait your turn till they call your name. 6' social spaces seating. Private room. A medical assistant explains the test process. Stick a swab up your nose 3/4" on both sides and rotate as directed. Brought my daughter to urgent care when she woke up with very sore, red, swollen throat and body aches. Check in was quick and didn't wait long in the waiting room. She was seen immediately by a nurse that took her vitals and soon after the doctor came in and looked at her throat. They tested her for strep, COVID, flu. We suspected strep but the rapid test was negative, so she wasn't prescribed penicillin and they took another swab for a culture test which would take a couple of days for results. Flu and Covid were negative. They sent her home without any antibiotics at all, even a broad range would've helped. Obviously she had some type of infection going on, and the only advice was to wait for results. In the meantime the infection went to her ear, she was in pain and was prescribed lidocaine syrup and broad range antibiotic by her PCP group but it took several days to get an appointment which was the point of going into urgent care. My advice is to advocate for yourselves, be proactive with treatment because they will dismiss you without anything to help your symptoms. read more

We've been to the location at least 10 times in the last few years. I have two young kids who are sick all the time and we are really grateful to have this resource. My son has chronic asthma and I feel like they take his needs seriously. Every time we've gotten an X-ray here it's been a good experience. We've gotten breathing treatments here too and they've been so helpful. Sometimes the wait time can be long but I feel like they try to move quickly. Overall, the staff are skilled and caring. In particular we love Dr Aneema Van Groenou, she's fantastic. Also had a great experience with Dr Neelu Kaliani, who was super helpful with my son's asthma. All the nurses have been great too! We also love that they coordinate with the pediatrician who we see who's on the 3rd floor. Overall this is the best urgent care in the area and definitely the best for young kids! It's open later than other places too. We don't want to have to come back (who wants to be sick!) but if we have to, we will go here! read more

I've been treated at numerous hospitals in the Bay Area, and I can say being at the Sutter Health urgent care/ER in Castro Valley has been nothing but excellent. Came here for right side abdominal pain and initially walked into Urgent Care and within 5 min they told me I needed to go to the ER, so one of the nurses walked me over. Thought I'd have a miserable experience in the ER (long waits, busy and dismissive staff), but that was not the case. Didn't wait too long to fortunately get a room (likely due to my symptoms), but the big win for me was the staff - everyone and I mean EVERYONE was kind, personable, and it just felt like I was getting concierge treatment. When I spoke with one of the nurses about my observations, she said from her viewpoint the doctors, nurses, nurse assistants etc. enjoy working with each other. Of course it's not perfect, but on the whole they work well together, which in turn reflects on how they work with their patients. Like every workplace, nothing's perfect. But here, they're doing something right. And when I feel at my most vulnerable, I am comforted knowing the staff here are articulate, charming, and just downright awesome read more

I told them I probably won't be the best person to do it as I trust the medical team more. They then turned around and asked my 4 year old son to swab himself. I went in had a good experience until the provider I seen forgot to send in the correct prescription I have been having trouble breathing due to rsv as it turns out, when I call in they to explain what happened, they said they can't help me unless I come in to be seen again, it has not even been 24hrs since my first visit, it feel more like they want to bill my insurance again and make more money of me my symptoms are the same nothing has changed in less than 24hrs this makes no sense to me. The Urgent Care Center sent my wife to the Emergency Department. My wife was complaining about her pain in her chest ribs and back. She told them that she had a car accident. The nurse who decides the severity of the illness decided to just take people in the order that she arrived. I wonder why they even needed her there. I had a problem with my leg and received excellent care. My wife was not so lucky after 3 hours my 75 year old wife was taken for a X-ray. I came late because I was not sure that I would be allowed to go in. She told me that the nurse pushing the wheel chair bumped into something and acted like she was not hurt. I went in because of a deep cut on my finger and was seen within an hour by Dr. Rodrigues, who was very pleasant. She decided to apply skin glue to close my laceration. When I got the bill from Sutter Health they coded the procedure as surgery and my insurance didn't cover it as a normal Urgent Care visit. I was billed $431 for them to put glue on my finger!! I feel like this place is unethical and tries to scam patients. On a prior visit for a sprained wrist they used an "out of network" vendor for the brace they gave me and I was billed four times the amount of what it sells for in a drugstore. The service may be good, but their billing practices are shady. Beware. read more

I went to Sutter Urgent Care in Castro Valley with a fever of 102 temperature. I was not even examined by the doctor and someone not sure if she is a nurse or an assistant who seems to have any clue comes in does not examine and says I need an X ray even before she took my vitals. she says I have to go to ER. At ER I waited for an hour and I was given a tablet for fever. X-ray was done and they tested for flu/covid. And then they made me sit for another 1.5 hrs. After asking them why was I in ER and have been waiting for 2.5hrs. The rude receptionist at ER says I need to wait. Then they send me inside and I wait for another 2 hrs. I kept asking them why was I here and not a single person there knows why I was there. They kept checking their computer and saying they will check with the nurse in charge. I told them I have to go to pick kids from school but they didn't care. After 3hrs doctor shows up, does not even examine me and says I have flu. Not a single nurse was there to answer my question. they said I have to wait for an hour or two to prepare discharge sheet. For what? Discharge sheet? I was not given a bed nor a place to sit. I was standing all the time. Don't think Castro Valley Urgent Care and ER know what ER stands for. Horrible place, I was sent a bill of $380. PAMF or Sutter health is a scam. Looks like I'm not the only one and this urgent care/ER tandem working to scam the insurance companies and people. Do not go to this place and waste your precious time and hard earned money. Don't know what happened to my original review so I am posting it again. I am not sure in what world a person with a little temperature/flu needs ER attention. Today, I had the WORST experience. I was in Urgent Care and then forced to ER due to a misunderstanding on the providers part. There was no wait in urgent care. However, there was a 5+ hour wait in the ER. The ER was horrific. The waiting area was soooooo terribly nasty, blood on the floors, the floors were black from dirt, snotty tissues, sick people throwing up, others looking like they were dying, in a very small waiting room. Bathrooms were disgusting! I couldn't bring myself to use it. It got so bad that I finally asked if someone could at least wipe up the blood from the floors after seeing a small child inspecting it. Out comes the janitor complaining about how she can't clean the floors because the ER was too full. Waited 2 full hours in my room before being seen after the nurse got my info. Not a soul came to see if I needed water or anything. But they made sure to collect my payment quickly. Finally, I asked how much longer since 7 hours had passed from my initial check-in. The nurses looked at me like I interrupted their soap operas. (What do the nurses that sit at the desks in the ER actually do?) Got the why are you bothering face. The lady that took my payment was actually nice, but the entire ordeal has traumatized me. One doctor for an entire ER? I hope the Department of Health reads this review! That ER needs to be evaluated seriously! The hospital is making money from forcing patients to unnecessarily go to the ER to rack up a large bill for something minor. This is a racket. After 9 hours, I was sent home with antibiotics and told to take nyquil. Now I have to pay for an ex-ray and an EKG that I did not need! I recently moved to the East Bay and unsuccessfully tried a few different urgent care clinics. Not realizing Sutter Health offered urgent care in Castro Valley, I went today and just wanted to thank the entire staff. From intake to triage to nursing to the Doctor, everyone treated me kindly, with concern, and provided excellent information. I could hear the various interactions with others and uniformly everyone received excellent service and treatment. I would also like to commend the physician, Dr. Allen Bueno Del Bosque. I come from a family of doctors and my father defines great consultative medicine. Dr. Bueno Del Bosque, my father would find you the epitome of all a patient should experience. For the inexperienced with great care, you will find Dr. Bueno Del Bosque immediately disarming, quick, smart, caring, thoughtful, and the furthest from formulaic. Most of all, this gentleman truly appears to take pride in his work, telling me as I left, "We're here for you and don't hesitate to come see us." Thank you to the entire staff, including a very, very impressive nursing team, and I will certainly make Sutter Urgent Care Castro Valley our home for future medical care. read more

Had a 'senior moment' and stumbled ending with a nasty rupture of my collarbone. But not at the usual spot, oh no. I had to crush the bone down into the shoulder frame. Made a heck of a mess and was seriously painful. Went to Sutter Urgent Care and they treated me with the utmost professionalism, compassion, and urgency, The Dr was extremely knowledgeable, nurses were incredible, even the x-ray technician went way out of his way to see that I could relax and take my mind off the pain. Based a number of my symptoms, I came in because I strongly suspected a secondary bacterial infection in addition to the viral infection I know I have. Fever chills would get better very temporarily and would come back again almost always as the 4-6 hour window hit for Advil wearing off (excepting the 2 times where I thought I was finally turning the corner), and this had been going on for 7 days--far longer than any other fever chills I've had in my life, including when I had Covid a year and a half ago. *I write fever chills because I have had to take Advil constantly to not be in agony, and so any potential fever did not manifest in a meaningful way, though severe chills did.* At the mere mention of wanting antibiotics to treat a potential secondary infection, I was outright told by the doctor that he wouldn't prescribe antibiotics. As I try to describe the full extent of my symptoms and at-home treatment, he claims to a nurse that I was refusing examination (false) and brings her in for I don't know what, peacekeeper? She defends the doctor's stance, which is fine. It's her job. I explain that I didn't demand anything, only expressed "I think that..." and "I would like..." and that I never refused examination. The exam carried forward. The doctor modified his statement saying he won't prescribe antibiotics without determination that a bacterial infection is present. They did have me get a chest x-ray to check for pneumonia, which I much appreciate. Fortunately my chest x-rays were clear. Of course that is the extent of checking to see if there is a concurrent bacterial infection. I was sent out the door no other testing done or ordered. I promptly left with the chest x-ray being the only thing of value, registered for CVS virtual care, and within an hour spoke to a provider who did take the time to hear out my symptoms. I was prescribed antibiotics without effort or hesitation. I should note that I am aware that the over prescribing of antibiotics is problematic. The issue I have is that this doctor (all Sutter doctors?) gave no indication for discretion on a case by case basis, which should consist of factoring in the full range of symptoms, home treatment (very few questions were asked during my visit) and medical history. I don't like taking antibiotics; I have a sparse history for being prescribed antibiotics and only for UTIs, post surgery, and a postpartum hemorrhage. And I certainly don't ask for antibiotics. I suffer through every cold and flu as anyone else does, knowing full well antibiotics won't help. THIS was not THAT. And blanket policies where everyone who walks in the door is denied antibiotics out of hand HARMS patients. The doctor (again, maybe all of Sutter) seems to operate like this: "I don't know that there is a secondary bacterial infection unless I have proof, but I'm not going to investigate further. Goodbye! I know that many doctors operate this way--and it's a challenge to sift them out. But it's worth it to have a care team that is empathetic, gives due consideration, and most importantly, is not dismissive. There are far better out there, and I have had the great privilege to find them for my routine care. For prompt medical matters, assuming you won't need labs or imaging for diagnosis and treatment, I highly recommend CVS Virtual Care over Sutter Urgent Care. (I am giving Sutter Urgent Care 2 stars instead of 1 because I found the rest of the staff courteous and kind) read more

The other, well all I need to know is how does one know if they are a carrier of covid and her response is I don't know!! Then what the hell are you doing talking to pts and testing them. You suck. After the receptionist asked me for my symptoms , I was told to leave, go back to the parking garage and call this (510) 247-6321. After following said instructions, I was told that I should come back at 4pm because that's the appointment time I was given! My God! Why is this the healthcare system in America!? I have PPO insurance too! It doesn't matter. The healthcare industry isn't about healthcare! It's about money! How much more they can extort from the suffering and sick. Shame on you Sutter! Our 20 months old had HIGH fever (103-140F) for 6.5 days straight so I booked an urgent care appointment per our doctor's recommendation. Our child tested positive for Covid five days ago so I was worried about complications, because I read that Covid driven fever usually go away after 5 days. We were greeted with an absolutely ridiculous nurse, whose first comments to us were cynically " welcome back ! I don't understand why you're here again ! You just came in for a visit and there's nothing else we can do but give him more fever reducer ! Everyone who get Covid will have symptoms that will last for a while!" I explained that I wanted the doctor to check on the child because HIGH fever for this prolonged period (nearly 7th day) is rare. I told him that our last urgent care visit was five days ago; it's not like we came in yesterday ! The nurse still gave us the attitude and made it sound like we are just crazy annoying parents overreacting. After a couple minutes into this conversation where I clearly do not feel welcomed, perhaps even discriminated, I told him that we have every right to be concerned about our sick baby. The whole family is sick with Covid and do you think we swing by the hospital for fun? Lastly, do you expect parents to only bring in their kids until they are dying ? He later apologized, and turned out -- the doctor confirmed that the child did have more (non-threatening) complications from Covid. The doctor prescribed extra medication which will be crucial for his recovery. We've been patients at Sutter for years and everyone has been nice and friendly. But this was an very ignorant and rude encounter from a nurse -- I hope he learned his lesson and never judge another patient this way, especially parents with sick children ! read more

On August 2, 2020 I was told to do push-ups by Dr. Uchenna Okoronkwo to treat my neck, back, and hand injury. Crazy experience and worst advice ever. Let me back up some... I went to the Sutter Health Urgent Care in Castro Valley, CA because I had recently been in an auto accident and was experiencing neck, lower back, and left hand pain (I grabbed the seat belt with my left hand to brace for impact). I was seen by Dr. Uchenna Okoronkwo, which was a horrible experience. He was far from warm and welcoming, rather he was very callous. I described the accident to him as well as the pain I was feeling. He said he would do an Xray of my hand but would not do them for my neck and lower back (even though I could barely turn my head). When I asked why he said he saw no need to do, that and to get rid of the neck pain he said I could just do push-ups against a counter. He proceeded to demonstrate how to do the push-ups by placing his hands on the counter in the office and going up and down. I looked at him in disbelief. I told him that even if I wanted to it would be impossible because my hand was injured during the accident. He then said I can just do one-handed push-ups, as proceeded to demonstrate the movement with one hand on the counter. I immediately asked for a 2nd opinion, after which he shrugged his shoulders and walked out of the room. I have never been so upset with a doctor. His whole demeanor toward me was disrespectful and unprofessional. It felt as though he was trying to shoo me away as opposed to actually treat me. Never in my life had I heard of one handed push-ups being a pain reliever, and I honestly felt like I wasted my time and, more importantly, money going to see him. I complained to the Urgent Care Risk Specialist, Robby Livaudais, after-which I received a letter from him stating that the stakeholders agreed that push-ups was an "appropriate" form of care, which didn't make sense. I asked to speak to the doctor who felt it was "appropriate", which was Dr. Patricio Chavez. During my conversation with this doctor I was informed that the "stakeholders" referenced in the letter was Dr. Okoronkwo (the push-up doctor) and Dr. Chavez (his supervisor). Dr. Chavez admitted that he was biased when it comes to his staff. He also said he doesn't know why I was told to do push-ups (which would cause more pain) and that maybe it was because Dr. Okoronkwo was prior military, both in his native African country as well as in the USA. Dr. Chavez stated that he would not have used the word "appropriate" to classify this standard of care (yet it's what was listed in the letter). He also said he would have never told any of his patients to do push-ups and don't know any other physician that would have said that would be okay to do. When I asked if he counseled Dr. Okoronkwo and what the counseling entailed he responded that he told Dr. Okoronkwo to be a little more careful and Dr. Okoronkwo said "okay" (a really brief conversation in passing). I feel like I'm not only getting the run around, but there is some unethical behavior going on at this facility. I got a letter stating that the care given was appropriate yet no one is verbally saying they agree with that letter (so on paper I'm seeing one thing but over the phone I am being told another). I am completely dissatisfied with this whole experience, and to date nothing has been resolved. read more

I wish i could give this " urgent care " 0 stars. We waited in there for 4+ HOURS waiting to be seen. The excuse was that ambulances kept coming ( which is understandable) but if you know you have multiple people waiting in urgent care to be treated they could have at least checked in periodically or SOMETHING! We asked if any water was available for a 70+ y/o woman who had been waiting there for an hour and a half already and they denied water because she had not been seen by a doctor. 4 more hours had passed and she was still not seen. As luck would have it, my family had made two trips to urgent care in the past week (for different reasons, obviously). Both times we were quickly diagnosed and sent home to get healthy. The staff is hilarious and they really make an effort to put your mind at ease. The doctor on call was great, we saw him both visits. read more

Staff was nice, but expectations were set incorrectly. I was told I could schedule an appointment so I set one at 4pm. I was there early and my vitals checked around 3:15, then I was brought in around 4pm. The nurse told me it shouldn't be too long since there was only one person in front of me. I sat in the room for an additional 30 minutes. I finally asked the staff about the wait and I was seen by the doctor shortly after. The waiting room is a bit claustrophobic compared to the waiting area for imaging and blood work. The nurse was super nice and the doctor was well informed. Appointments are great, but they still see people with higher severity first. In that way, urgent care feels more like waiting in the ER and people who are relatively OK just end up waiting longer. read more

It's a Saturday morning around 10:30 am. and there was no line. When explaining to the friendly front desk staff what happened, Nurse Stella was present and immediately took us to the triage room for assessment. She cleaned it and examined it and not even 10 mins later Dr. McKinley came in to assess. We were checked in and escorted to a room to receive sutures. Both Nurse Stella and Dr. McKinley are phenomenal. Very kind, patient, professional, and most of all extremely caring. Excellent bedside manner and really made a scary situation much better. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone in need of care. They were very fast and attentive and saved us over $100 and hours of wait time by coming here instead of the ER. read more

After reading all these reviews and seeing all of the experiences people are having I feel obligated to share my experience. Under some of these reviews the SAME THING HAPPENED TO OTHERS. They were told that they had a virus andit had to run its course but it was an infection that was treatable with antibiotics! I came here for what would be a simple fix back home in ny for a cough amongst other obvious symptoms pointing to bronchitis. The dr said it may be allergies...i thought...I don't have any allergies. Then the dr said it may be the air quality from the fires...and then i thought again...thats weird...because i just got here days ago from ny....so definitely not that. Then the MD TOLD ME IT WAS A VIRUS AND ANTIBIOTICS WOULDN'T WORK. So not having insurance I went in hoping to get medication to cure this bronchial issue (which now will be the second night in a row i am feeling like i am drowning and coughing at home). I paid an arm and a leg and was told what I already knew from years of emt experience and was left with a hefty price and a statement from the dr saying she is not going to prescribe me antibiotics due to her not believing it will help in this situation because its a virus and just has to run its course. Now its gotten worse leaving me with no funds for another visit and no medication. Lastly, the last time this happened with a dr i had these same exact symptoms i ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. Very un happy with this experience, the state board should hear about this. All that's going to be said is sorry for your experience you can talk to our team if you want. That didn't fix the 10 bad LAST REVIEWS on here. Never would have came if I read these reviews first. My 6 years old fell from a play structure at school and had a very deep cut on the cheek under the eye. We flew to the Sutter Urgent Care immediately and got admitted in less than 5 mins. I was heartbroken and couldn't stop shaking the whole time seeing my daughter suffering from lots of pain. Kudos to the Sutter Urgent Care medical stuffs! They weren't only performing all necessary treatment (cleansing and stitching) for my daughter, but also calming us down so we felt much better mentally. Especially, I would like to thank Dr. Manijeh Ghsemi for performing incredible wound procedure for my daughter. I know nearly nothing about plastic surgery or stitching but I could tell her skills are beyond exceptional. I would also want to thank medical assistant Alani Cham and Mashal Shujayee for easing my crying baby so she was calm enough to receive the treatment. They were extremely professional and patient. They explained well and clear about all our concerns. I feel extremely lucky with my visit as things could have been much worse. They are the living angels! read more
