This place is really good with hospitality. Especially the Starbucks it has inside of it. The workers in the Starbucks are really kind. The drinks that are made are really good too. The actual story it's self though, not so much. The workers always seem mad and upset. When you smile at them they don't smile back or even leave you with a "have a nice day". The prices are super high too, but they have their good deals sometimes. A lot of students from the junior high go there too before or after school. They aren't really a problem. Although they make them wait outside in a gigantic line for student passes. They only have like 3 students passes as well, so the process goes super slow. read more

We came to O'Brien's Market on Roseburg Avenue inside the Roseburg Square shopping center. Came for some sandwiches and a pint of egg salad. I'm soooo happy that there is a place that still has egg salad sandwiches!! It seems to be a "dying breed" around here. So, I purchase the container (ranging from 1/2 pint to quart) of egg salad to make a deconstructed sandwich. I eat it with wheat thins and bacon. They have bacon by the slice in the deli and it is delicious. I love my bacon crispy, and boy is it good! The last time I got the egg salad it was a little dry, and there were giant pieces of dry yolk-- yuck. Thankfully, this one was good. My son and his dad each had a regular sandwich. My son had turkey, provolone, spinach, black olives, some condiments, salt and pepper on a white roll. He likes a cheese bread too, but few places have that anymore. :( He really enjoyed his sandwich. His dad had a ham and swiss sandwich on a white roll. I don't remember all the trimmings, but he said there was a decent amount of meat on both sandwiches and was happy with that. I tried to sign up for their digital sandwich punch card, but I had some technical difficulties. Bummer, because we like to come here and would like to get a sandwich free. However, not much luck figuring it out. I think it is buy 10 sandwiches, get the 11th free. Almost anything free you can count me in! :) The Chobani yogurts were on sale for 99 cents! My son and I both eat those, so I was happy with that price. Obriens tends to be a more upscale grocery store. There motto is "the best place for fresh!" They are really good about making sure nothing in the store is "coded" or expired. They have a little clearance section where one can find cheaper items that are about to expire. It is nice on the pocketbook if you find the right item you are looking for! Oh, I forgot to buy the secret sale item. If you sign up for emails you will recieve a secret sale item and this week is a pretty good one! The two workers in the deli were nice to talk to and they did a good job preparing our food. Great customer service! My only small suggestion is that the meal deal (a bag of chips and a soda) be more clear. The person helping us said it included the chips in two places, we were excited to get the Doritos nacho chips, the cashier and the manager on duty said no. The combo price wasn't working at the register and we had to go back and get different chips. Kind of a pain, but not the end of the world. Thankfully, there wasn't anyone else in line. read more

I needed a few last minute thanksgiving items about a month ago & I saw the obriens ad with pumpkin pies for $4.99! I couldn't believe the price and on top of that it turned out to be one of the best pumpkin pies ever! When in the store picking up other items, a nice worker offered me a cart since she saw me with my hands getting full. Everyone was so nice! Theres just a really good overall vibe in this location. Bonus points for still having bakery bagels in the afternoon (plus they were still fresh & chewy the next day). read more

I come to O'Brien's every so often to grab a deli sandwich, a bakery item, and to do some shopping when they have sales. The deli sandwiches are very good. Service at the deli counter is generally very friendly. My deli server tonight was exceptional. Service at the check out stands can be a bit hit or miss. Overall though, I have no major complaints. They also have a sandwich club where you can earn a free sandwich after a certain number of sandwich purchases. Be sure to sign up for it. If you are shopping here for groceries, their pricing is a bit higher with the exception of sales ad items. Their sale items are very competitively priced. They also have some items on clearance and you can grab a bargain here if you are lucky. Who doesn't like a bargain? This particular location is older and is not as nice as their other locations, but it is kept very clean. I often shop at the Dale road location which is larger and dare I say fancier. Mel is one of the jewels there, I can ask her about anything there in the case or fresh bread area she knows its ingredients well. So we ordered 3 sandwiches and decided to try out the turkey club and the Jason. The turkey club was delicious. It was nicely toasted but the Jason was garbage! The bread was stale the chicken was skimpy and dry. My sandwich had more jalapeños than chicken lol. Super dry with only mustard they didn't even bother putting mayonnaise on the damn thing. I went up tot he cashier, no greeting, did not tell me that there was a total I had to ask if she was done and ready for me to pay. Zero smile. Used to like coming to the deli for their turkey club, but had a bad experience with the pissy old white lady at the sandwich counter. She put my sandwich aside so that when I go to pick it up she could very rudely and loudly tell me they don't do modifications on the bread. I was surprised by how she talked to me, I just said ok and left. But what I SHOULD HAVE said is "if you actually read what I put in the comment, it said IF you're out of the usual bread, these other two options are fine." I only added that comment, because it's happened before where they were out of the usual bread they use for panini, and I don't find out till I get there, THEN they offer a substitution. I order ahead to get my sandwich and get out, so the comment is JUST IN CASE they are out, cause I don't want to wait. She then hands the saddest sandwich I've had from there, with literally half the amount turkey it usually has. Then as she turns to walk away, she's still b*tching about the bread. She ruined my mood for the rest of the day. Overall the store customer service is awful, unless your rich and white of course. It was never bad enough for me to actually want to take the time to write a review. Only the Starbucks workers and a couple of ladies in the deli have been polite, more so the Starbucks workers.The old cranky lady at the deli sandwich counter has never greeted me, like fine whatever, then when she does have to help me, she does so all huffy puffy. I have went to both locations of the store the Modesto store and the store in Riverbank, I was definitely not impressed with either store. I feel like the customer service is horrible. Most of their items are overpriced. They don't seem to take the California mandates for Covid seriously they use it more as a suggestion guide. I even noticed that some of the "fresh" meat looks very old. read more

I've been going to O'Brien's for over 12 years. I like have a grocery store walking distance from my house so have supported them by continuing to shop there during the pandemic. Unfortunately they were really slow on the uptake requiring masks and even now the customers seem to take it as a suggestion only. Probably because O'Brien's didn't enforce masks for so long they get more anti-maskers than other places. They've always been just a mediocre store, sufficient but nothing special. Limited selection, marginal organic produce and just okay butcher meat quality. I shopped there to support a local business. But after today I won't go back. The cashier was not wearing a cloth face covering over her mouth and nose. She had this stupid clear plastic half shield that went from her chin to her nose and did not seal to her face at all. It was completely open. She was talking, laughing and spewing her shit all over everything. Grosser than gross. I asked the manger to check me out as far away from her as he could and he did. The icing on the cake was while he did so another employee walked in laughing walked within 1 foot of me with her mask in her hand. He said nothing to her. That's it I'm done. If they won't even make the employees properly mask up in the store then it's no wonder the customers don't. read more

The store is relatively expensive compared to Winco, WalMart or Safeway, but I love their deli. The deli food is always good and fresh with a good selection, and the price is very reasonable. We've been here a few times for deli dinners and I always get green salad, potato salad and macaroni salad, and have not been disappointed. Ditto for my wife. read more

I went in for some buns and was disgusted on the hospitality . One gal with short hair as I approached the check stand put her sign that she was closed right as I approached . Eye contact from hell . No smile or a small gesture that she was closed . Just a rude display that she just closed as I approached . The second cashier , no hospitality no customer service , no hello or thank you. This one is for the sandwiches! I go here for lunch regularly - the sandwiches are infinitely better than subway... You can have it your way at O'Brien's or order one of their many menu sandwiches.I usually get the peppered turkey with pepper jack on a sourdough - everything is fresh and made to order. They do have a collection of premade half sandwiches - one called the mediteranean is pretty darn tasty and will save you from standing in line on a busy day. . This morning my coworker went in for our normal EVERY DAY coffee and bagels for work, she was asked not once, not twice but THREE times if she had paid for her things. Keep in mind that their Starbucks you MUST pay before you even get your coffee and the bagels were prepped and THEIR worker. Then on the way out in the parking lot was approached by 2 people asking her to go back in to show proof of purchase... THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THIS AT ALL!!!!! Completely embarrassed and shocked she went back in only to see the worker that did the bagels clear that she had paid, what an embarrassment as a company to treat your customers this way, especially ones that go in almost every single day. I get that you're busy at lunchtime (spoiler alert: that's why you have a job), but sometimes, like today, the negativity is totally palpable and uncomfortable. I wanted to walk out today with her rude attitude, and they weren't even that busy. I feel bad for the other sweet deli staff that get lumped in with her and others like her. Really awesome sandwiches, but prepare yourself for a potentially rude encounter by someone who appears completely burnt out on their job. I've heard from several friends in the last few years that they stopped going here for that very reason. It's sad, but clearly with merit. 4 stars for the great meat and prepared food selection, and most of the staff that are friendly (I'm in here almost daily being that I live a block away so most there know us). Well, I let two bad experiences pass assuming it was because of the holiday season and the Baggers were frazzled. But today, this is the straw that broke the camel's back. If you hate your job? Then don't work here. Your job, is to bag groceries. My first job was at O'Brien's many years ago customer service is everything! You would think that separating groceries into two piles asking for two bags and explaining that the groceries are going to separate places would make what they're doing easier and pretty easy to understand? Apparently not. In fact, this very rude bagger felt the need to roll her eyes and sigh exasperated at me. I explained they're going two places there was no need to eyeroll it wasn't that complicated. Everyone knows O'Brien's is higher-priced, because you pay for convenience of location and what? Customer service! Back in the 80s (yes it's been a while) when the store relocated from Orangeburg and Ardmore to this location (again it's been a while)... customer service was stressed at every point to do what you could to make the customer happy and I started in the meat department, not even as a bagger. My point is, I guess that rotten attitude isn't worth convenience I'll be taking my business elsewhere...and my family has shopped at obriens since the opening in the seventies read more

Yesterday I went to O'Brien's market in Roseburg Square to pick up a few things. When I got to the cashier I noticed that they had a bottle of hand sanitizer with a price tag in front of it for $5.99. But, when I checked out the cashier said oh that price is wrong it's $9.99 do you still want it reluctantly I said yes. I'm a first responder and needed it for my jump bag. I believe that it was price gouging. My understanding is if it has a posted price it's to be sold at that price. I have always liked O'Brien's but if there going to be price gouging people I will be going to Safeway from now on. I would report them but I don't know to who. I am visiting my brother in Modesto and have shopped here several times over the last 3 weeks, so I have several comments. First let me say that I am in the grocery business so I know the grind and really don't hold it against workers when they are short tempered or a bit abrasive. Retail anything is hard. Grocery is exhausting, especially in the age of Covid. Ok... now on to my review. In general the employees barely acknowledge you are there. They see you as a function of their job, and won't speak to you or acknowledge you at all unless you press it. I have said 'hello' to the meat counter works and been answered with either 'what did you need?' Or 'can I help you?', and no closing statement AT ALL, and said hello or hi to the cashiers and been ignored. The first time I thought she just didn't hear me so I was sure to just smile and then at the close say 'have a nice day!', but she ignored my attempt at pleasantries and just handed me my receipt and turned to talk to the other cashier. Maybe it was a long day? Next time I did the same with a different cashier- no greeting, no words AT ALL. I gave my 'have a nice day!' and again... nothing. It was 9 am. All of this is shitty customer service but whatever. It is groceries and that is what I want. Well. I shopped yesterday and bought 'Cotton Candy' grapes (Again... I am in the business so I know what the product should be). I got home and washed them and now am seeing that they switched out half the bag of them with green seedless (substantially different taste and cheaper grapes by a few bucks a pound). So what is going on here is larger than exhausted workers. It is ethics. Not sure what else is happening here, but I just will shop elsewhere. read more

I would go to Obrien's market frequently to Buy deli sandwiches while on this day I went to buy my regular Turkey deli sandwich double meat with bacon American cheese pickles mayo lettuce that's the way I always order it never change it for the past 9 years, well for some reason I don't know why I got sick on the sandwich there was a new person making it she had a tag that said please be patient I'm new I don't know if it was the meat the bacon what was it I got sick I called them within an hour the manager said there was nothing they can do she was giving me a bunch of excuses she said that she talk to somebody in the deli department that the meat had just been cut within three hours and she refused to give me a refund, and for the money that I spent for two sandwiches every time do I go in she should at least give me a refund for my sandwich I wasn't asking everyone for both sandwiches I was the one that got sick I was only asking a refund for one sandwich my sandwich I'm the one that got sick I even told her I had the other half I couldn't eat it I was really sick to my stomach I can't hold anything down asked her she was calling me a liar, she says no on the phone but she says there's nothing she can do she refused to give me a refund and still today I'm looking for the main number of Obriens Market to speak to somebody in their corporate office I am very upset about this I will not be returning to the store to purchase anything from the store or the deli ever again read more
