Cute little spot in the corner of this HEB shopping center. Service was okay, not great. Took a while for a server to get our order. First experience with Korean food. Had no idea what bibimbob was, so I ordered it. Turned out it was everything. It covered the description on the menu, plus a number of little side dishes. This was a fun way to try different things. Many of these side dishes had all the same seasoning, so they blend together somewhat. You know how when something is prepped in a huge batch it loses its luster? That's kind of how I felt about these side dishes. Buffet quality. Major con: the quality of the sushi fish was not great. For the first time in my life, I set my tuna pieces to the side because they were just that bad. Solid veggie tempura, gyoza, & miso soup. Solid ramen, although the presentation was messier than I'm used to seeing. Varied menu. Could be some potential gems there. But if you want sushi, don't go here. read more

So I forgot my lunch today. Sad morning, but I decided to make the best of it and called my momma to meet me for lunch. It's so pretty when you walk in. The hostess was very sweet and sat us right away. I ordered the chicken katsu and the Bon fire sushi roll. My mom got udon noodles. Chicken katsu was great. It was served with so much I didn't know where to start. Everything was delicious. We shared the rolls and my mom was so stuffed we had to take the noodles to go. The service was great and timely. Sushi Chef Steve Ji is here!! Delicious Korean bbq and sushi all in place! Everything was served with presentation, as well as tasty. We sat at the shoes off BBQ grill and it was fun and relaxing. The price was very affordable and we left stuffed. I would recommend this place to others. The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars is for two reasons: A) you can not get the full Korean BBQ at the habachi grill (so no galbi or bulgogi, I suspect because it's marinated meat and messy) and B) the service was a little slow with drink refills and checking on us, it got busy even though we arrived by 5:30pm. They offer 3 items at the habachi grill: beef, pork belly and one other, I think it was shrimp. We got the bed and pork belly and the beef was lightly marinated in soy and lacked the flavor I was hoping for. The pork belly was thick cut and not marinated. I look forward to returning. Hey for a plaza Sushi place it doesnt get better. Hands down the most complete sushi experience Ive had. Much like the first time I had good wine, the flavors unfolded, and the wasabi was practically fresh, so it smoothed out the excellent blend of flavors. I have a bad habit of forgetting which rolls are which, but their Incredible Roll is awesome. Can't hate. I saw a review about a roach, and people freaking out. I have been in Austin for 3 months now, and they are everywhere. I had one on my shoulder this evening. They have serious courage to pull that. It prob came in off the close or bag of someone. It was friendly, clean, and perfect for me and my gf, who are both sake drinkin sushi snobs, not afraid to spend a few bucks for a good meal once in a while. Bill was 120ish, with tip, and that was after an app, 4 specialty rolls, and 2 large hot sake. The salad and miso were complimentary. I brought home 1 roll, and some of the EXCELLENT calamari!! Its like an onion ring, but perfect, and without the onion part. I am always 50-50 on calamari, and how its prepared, this was my fav thus far. I can eat, and I was full....I walked out knowing I could have killed everything on the table, but why? I mean I am 30 now so no need to act like a pig. I really enjoyed the meal, and wanted to bask in the glory of an impulse to stay close to home. My girlfriend and I went this place for lunch and we were glad we did go for a lunch, not in a good way. We ordered their Bento Box menu and we thought we could enjoy a variety of mini dishes, which was correct but none of them were good. Some of them, for example, Shrimp Tempura weren't eatable. On the menu it said, "Lightly Buttered," which was quite opposit. Miso soup were the instant ones which anybody with hot water can make. Sushi were hardly impressive. Also, I don't know why someone even didn't advise the owner when they pick out the name of the place. The reason for that is because Odaku in Japanese means a poison or poisoned water. You don't want to eat that kind of a place. If that's the person's last name, that is very unfortunate. We were very surprised that people have given such a high rating for this place. Odaku is kind of in a random spot, I'd seen it a few times when I'd go to the HEB, and never really thought much of it. One day I had a really bad sushi craving and the spot I tried going to had a 40 minutes wait so I decided to try Odaku instead. Inside it's really nice, you can see the Itamae from the entrance working on food so that's really cool. It kind of took a while for us to get seated even though there was nobody else waiting at the time. It seemed like there was only 2 servers for the whole place. Once we got seated we were brought water and menus. To order sushi they give you a order list which is pretty cool since I've never been to a place that had that before. Prices were pretty high for the rolls in my opinion so we decided to get an order of gyoza (fried dumplings), a Philadelphia roll, and the beef teriyaki. It took maybe 10-15 minutes for the food to get to us and it all came together which I actually liked. I'm not sure if they bring side dishes for any order or just with entrees but their side dishes are really good. I'm not too sure exactly what all the side dishes were but I ate them all, my favorite was the bean sprout salad. The sushi was really good, for being a basic roll, and the beef teriyaki was so flavorful. The total for everything was a bit on the higher end and the servers were pretty slow but the food was delicious. I'd definitely give it another try but to get the lunch menu, they have bento boxes and roll combos. read more

I love Odaku Sushi. They appear to be a family run business and treat all their customers wonderfully. The sushi is prepared very well and their particular rolls are delicious. The staff are very attentive and treat you kindly. I also love that they go out of their way to acknowledge and treat regulars. The interior is very clean and their ingredients always taste fresh. They have a different spin on some of the traditional Japanese soup recipes which are actually quite tasty and unique. I hope they stay around for a long time because it's nice to have such a great sushi restaurant so close to home. read more

Go here if you like Korean food. The japanese food is nothing special. The second we walked in we could tell it was Korean owned. Lots of Koreans ordering Korean food, lots of white people ordering japanese food. We decided to try both. The kalbi tang and bibimbap were amazing. The japanese roll we ordered was decent but also cost $14. Not worth it. The korean dishes and panchan however were totally worth the visit, especially since good korean food in Austin is hard to come by. read more

I thought I had found the perfect sushi restraunt. inexpensive with very fresh ingredients. Then a roach scuttled out from under the wood tray I was eating my sushi from as my dining companion and were eating at the sushi bar. I smashed it in my napkin and first we tried to tell the waiter who only giggled. Thinking it was just a language barrier problem, we then told the sushi chef who merely nodded. I then told the manager on the way out. He calmly reached under the cash register for the exterminators flyer and said he would call the exterminator again. It was apparent roaches were not uncommon. We just had dinner at Odaku which was wonderful. We had not been there for many years but was looking for a place to go since the first 'trendy' sushi place we tried to go did not work out for us. Much to my surprise this was the perfect choice since I have not been treated like this in a long time. We sat at the sushi bar and told the sushi chef I had shellfish allergies and then asked him to please make us what ever he wanted taking into account my allergies. He asked how many pieces/rolls we wanted and we were off. Perfect! After talking for awhile we then found out that our sushi had only been working at Odaku for a few months since he he had to leave his position of over 18 years because they no longer have a sushi bar. This place is right around the corner from our house; so it was about time we checked this place out for dinner. I went for some nigiri and an Explosion roll, and my wife had the bulgogi bento box. - Nigiri: Excellent!! i had sea bass, maguro, yellow fin, red snapper, and mackerel. All very fresh, and decent size cuts. - Rolls: only had one, the Explosion roll. It was very good. I'm not sure how the others are. Plenty of their own unique creations on the menu though. - Hot green tea: extremely weak, even after letting it steep for a while. Basically hot water with a hint of tea flavor. - Hot sake: $8 for what would be a typical large at most places. They call them "medium" here. A "large" here is freaking huge, $12. - Bento box: Bulgogi was not fire roasted. It was sauteed and a little watery, but it had good flavor. - Tempura: doughy and not crispy at all. - Miso soup: really really good. Plenty of miso. - salad: good, typical for most sushi joints, but pretty big. - Ambience: Japanese hip hop music playing pretty loud. Kind of annoying. Very clean and nicely laid out, though. Good lighting - Price: They are definitely on the high end for pricing at sushi joints. - Service: slow, but very friendly. They also forgot to bring out my wife's miso soup and salad for her bento box. When we reminded them; they brought it out plus a complimentary miso soup for me :). Overall, we might go back, but will only do nigiri, rolls, miso soup, and sake. We'll skip on the bento box and the tempura. But that music was annoying, and service was slow, which makes it a little harder to come back. read more

O'daku Sushi burned me years ago with really really bad stinky sushi. I recently decided to give them another try. It had a funky odor to it that assaults the nostrils as soon as you walk in. We ordered edamame, kani salad, and sushi rolls. The edamame tasted like they had just popped them into the microwave for 15 seconds then took them out and lightly sprinkled them with salt. The spicy caterpillar roll was just so-so and the other roll had spicy tuna in it and it tasted rather funky. I also ordered a Sapporo beer and the glass I was given was filthy. First, I acknowledge that the sushi at O'Daku is good, usually fresh and pleasing. Why the negative review? In each of my last three visits, I have been overcharged. On one occasion, I was charged for sushi I did not order (about $8 worth). On the next, I was charged for the wrong drink (a $10 difference). On the last occasion, the waiter transposed my check, so I was charged double the correct amount. In each case, they made a correction and apologized, which was the right thing to do. One error of this kind I was willing to forgive, even two, but after three separate episodes over 2-3 months I am not sure I will go back. If you do eat at O'Daku, I encourage you to review your bill VERY carefully before paying. read more

Loved this place! 4 stars just because the sushi was a little warm and I prefer that my sushi be served really cold. The staff was super sweet and even brought us out a free miso soup because it came with my dinner and not my husbands. They also brought us out some free sashimi. Super clean. Ok, I must start with the Positives. I love the Food here. They make great Vegetarian Sushi Rolls and they have a great tofu with teriyaki sauce. The Food is definitely very tasty and the veggies used are all fresh. Now the not so Good part. The Service sucks at this place. They sometimes make you wait forever for Water even if the place is practically empty. They have the most inconsistent menu options. A few times, I have gotten the Bento Box with Tofu Teriyaki and Tofu sushi roles and they were able to make it for me. One time I was charged 8.99$ for it and the next time it was 10.99$. When I asked them about it, they were like, we made a mistake the last time. I was like: oh, well, I like the food, so its ok. On a recent Visit, I ordered the exact same Bento Box and the server brought out a full dish of the Tofu Teriyaki and when I told her that I ordered a Bento Box, she discussed it and came back and told me that they are going to give me the sushi roll and the tofu Teriyaki for the Price of the Bento Box. She did bring out a salad, no tempura or any other sides that come in a Bento Box. And Guess What: they charged me 8.99$ :) The first time I was at ODaku, the server told me the Miso Soup has Chicken broth, on the recent visit the server tells me, no Chicken broth. SO, I AM NOT SURE. I hate to give them a OK, I love LOVE the Food. But its not just the food, the experience pretty much sucks. They need to step it up. I was really excited to try this place given all the positive yelp reviews and it is pretty close to where I live so another plus, but my experience was AWFUL! I started out with Lychee Sake which tasted really watered down. My miso soup tasted like it came straight out of a Great Value instant packet. Then on to my sushi rolls (I can't remember the name and no website for me to look it up) something tasted funny so I asked the waiter what are the sauces and he said ketchup and mustard umm okay yes that would explain the red and yellow sauces but what the heck! that was not listed on the menu. I hate straight yellow hot dog mustard and only like ketchup on my fries I would have never ordered that. Did they run out of the regular sauces or is this normal? I was so confused. The fish in the rolls were just okay although not particularly fresh compared to other sushi places I've been too. To be fair I can not rate their regular dishes, I only tried their specialty rolls so if that is what you are looking for steer clear because Odaku is not the place to get your roll fix. Not only is this the worse sushi roll place I have been to but I will boldly say $60.00 later (meal plus tip) probably the worst restaurant I have been to in Austin in my 4 years of dining out here. I could have ordered Sushi Zushi delivery and bought my own bottle of non-watered down sake for that price and at a much better quality. Never Again! read more

We eat here about once every week because we like it so much. It has a family-owned feel and the food is consistently good. We primarily get the Japanese fare, and can attest to the quality of their sushi, tempura and soups. Never too busy and always high quality. I recommend it! read more

My husband and I have had dinner at this restaurant several times because I enjoyed their spicy seafood soup. However, I decided not to go any more. Food was good (Only Korean food is good. Do not even try their Japanese food. It is disgusting.), but their service was awful. When I asked for ice water, our server gave me really warm, nasty water with no ice. (This might be Korean style?) That cup of water might have been someone else's.. I requested to replace it. The server just said, "oh, you don't like it?" Seriously? It is obvious that the water is not for serving. It smelled like it came out of a fish tank. Judging by this experience, I am wondering what condition their kitchen is in. We will never go back to this place, ever. By the way, as another poster here on yelp has pointed out, "odaku" in Japanese roughly translates to dirty water... Coincidence? I think not. read more
