I must have driven by this restaurant whenever I was on Parmer for like 15 years ... and never got around to going in. When I finally did, I discovered one of the best Japanese restaurants in Austin. Okay ... if you are going to pay $600 for an omikase then the omikase place is better. The tasting menu at Uchi is better. But if you just want Japanese without paying a gold brick and taking out a second mortgage on your house, Miyo Yakitori and Sushi is pretty damm fine. * * * a) Japanese curry is a utility dish in most Japanese restaurants ... and when you get down to it, in most Japanese homes. It is often what you serve on "cheap" night. Airport hotels offer it as the "free dinner" for tired travellers. The curry sauce itself here is standard issue. But they serve it with a Pork Katsu the size of Williamson county. And it is a very good Pork Katsu. That Katsu was good from Liberty Hill to Thrall and from Hester's Crossing to Jarrell. b) My carnivorous partner's Fireball Udon with Shellfish blew him away. Temperature wise and aesthetic pleasure wise. He raved about how good his udon was all the way home. c) Service was instantaneous. I think there was some sort of event horizon distortion of the space time continuum that allowed them to prepare the food and then go back in time and deliver it within a minute of it being ordered. Both of us were impressed. d) The service staff was as nice as any human beings could possibly be. * * * Great food. Great service. The folks who live in the apartment complex that Miyo is in are very lucky people indeed. Either the apartments are lovely and they get Miyo on top of that. Or the apartments are terrible, but they can still spend all their time in Miyo to compensate. Seems like a fair trade. **************** If you read the other reviews, There seems to be some controversy about this establishment. Miyo has fans and Miyo has haters. * * * Here is my read on the conflicting opinions: a) Earlier in the restaurant's history - Say about 2016, 17, or 18, The restaurant was not very good at all. I think at that time it had another name. b) There was a name change and quality went up. Sometimes when this happens there is an ownership change (or there is an owner who swaps out the management and cooking team to put in new blood.) However, things got fixed, they got fixed. c) Miyo's yakitori is apparently still not where it needs to be. I am not a huge Yakitori fan. If your broiled meat on a stick is not $80 an ounce Wagyu, Or amazing organ meats grilled in the Caucasus Barded with lamb fat and with farm fresh vegetables On another skewer for serious taste contrast ... If you are not at that high level, I don't want to pay for meat on a skewer. There are people who DO like Yakitori. They do NOT like the Miyo versions of that. * * * Yakitori is less than 20% of Miyo's menu. The rest is sushi or wonderful cooked dishes. Lay off the skewer food and you can do well here. read more

My daughter and I had lunch at Miyo on a recent weekday. The restaurant is located with a small group of stores in front of an apartment complex along Parmer Lane. Parking for the stores is a quick right turn after driving into the complex. Seating is available both indoors and outside on a shady deck. This is not a large restaurant, but the menu is extensive. Many items are a la carte, but there are also full meals with several included sides. A 2-page lunch menu is at the back of the main menu. We opted for edamame to start, a few skewers of yakitori, and 2 lunch special bento boxes. We were amazed by the amount of food in the lunch bento boxes. On top of that, everything tasted fresh and was obviously freshly prepared. My salmon was way overcooked but the tasty teriyaki sauce made up for it. My daughter's pork looked fabulous and she was very pleased with her choice. I thought that pricing was very reasonable given the quality and portion size. We ended up taking food home. Round Rock~ Just an addition to my review from the other day. We ate here again tonight! It was my friend's birthday and we decided to take him here because it was so good the other day. This time we got a delicious albacore roll, the beef yakisoba again, along with gyoza, and a Chashu Ramen. The waitress was very sweet and brought us a slice of green tea cheesecake, to share, for his birthday. I will say that I would not order the Ramen again. It had absolutely no flavor to the broth, the vegetables were not very tasty, and the pork was extremely fatty to the point where there was just a tiny bit of meat to eat. I had a friend come here who said that out of Austin, this was the place that had food that was most similar to Japan in terms of look and taste. And although I've yet to go to Japan, that really incentivized me to check Miyo out. It was pretty busy on a Thursday evening, so we sat outside. But the servers were so quick to check on us and get our orders. And they were so friendly too! We got Calamari tempura - I don't usually think Calamari when I go to Japanese restaurants, so it was kind of a shot in the dark ordering these. But I'm so glad we did. The tempura batter was so crispy, and it just gave for a different texture than your normal calamari. And the sauce was delicious too. The squid was cooked soo tenderly. Like usually calamari has a bit of rubbery-ness to it. But biting through these was so smooth and soft, but not too soft that it didn't have a good bite to it. Miso soup - these came with two of the entrees, but it was so delicious! To be fair, I always love miso soup, but it has a good balance of saltiness. And just tasted so homey. Spicy salmon roll - this was just one of their house rolls so it wasn't anything too crazy. But the fish tasted pretty fresh. I do wish the roll was rolled a bit tighter because all my pieces were falling apart when I tried to pick it up. And I kinda expected more spice. Like I thought the salmon itself would be spicy or something. But it just had spicy mayo on it. Kakiage udon - probably my favorite dish of the night! The udon was still bouncy, the broth was light, but had a good addicting saltiness to it. And the veggie pancake was delicious! It doesn't get soggy too fast. And even when it does get softer, it still works with the noodles. Chicken katsudon - also delicious! The chicken was really tender and seasoned really well. Even the rice underneath, I was afraid it would be plain and that the sauce only permeated the top layer. But the whole bowl was really flavorful, without being too saucy. Their rolls were well balanced, full of flavor and freshness but maybe a bit too much rice. I did like that the rice here wasn't too vinegary like other spots. The tonkatsu curry here was decent, but didn't blow me away. The pork tonkatsu was perfectly fried and crispy though. The sukiyaki dish was good! The eggs were soft, runny, and buttery. Walking in, it took me back to my time in Japan. The aromas were authentic. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry (Japanese curry is VERY different from Indian curry in case you were wondering, more sweet and mild). This was reminiscent of Japan for sure. I used to visit Miyo for their fresh sushi, but after a disappointing experience with a mischarge that they refused to correct, I will be telling my friends to avoid this place. I ordered 2 pieces of bluefin toro and 2 pieces of uni. Their menu requires you to write the quantity, and I wrote the same amount for both items. The server even mentioned the prices should be similar. But when the bill arrived, I was flabbergasted to see an $83.90 charge just for the blue fin toro. How can that be??? To charge that much without even warning the customer? For comparison, I recently paid $39 for unlimited sashimi at Sushi Warriors and had over 30 pieces, so I know I was being taken advantage of. I didn't finish the dish and, after seeing the bill, asked if they could take it back and offer a partial refund, thinking it might be a misunderstanding. Instead, the manager refused, saying that raw fish can't be re-served.. Their lack of empathy was disappointing, and it feels like they care more about making a profit than about making right with their customers :( Response to Business Owner: * I marked the menu for 2 piece sushi for the blue fin toro. * This is not true at all, at no point during the meal did anyone confirm the number of pieces, nor that it was sashimi instead of sushi. * Yes, I ate the sushi before I saw the bill. We stopped in a few weekends ago when hubs and I found that we had a date night available courtesy of our gym doing toddler activities! We ordered a boatload of food, all of which was divine, they even had frozen adult beverages which I indulged in and the yakitori skewers were buy 5, get 1 free! All things I've ordered have been nut allergy friendly, pretty sure most of their menu is. I've only ordered for pickup, have never eaten in at the restaurant. Parking is a bit difficult; there are some spots in the corner of the apartment lot. The order time estimate is sometimes overestimated, as I've shown up early and my order has been ready during lunch. Texas Roll: Massive, overpriced. I wouldn't get it again but it is a pinnacle of American style rolls. Salmon Maki Roll: More reasonably priced and the salmon is pretty good. Would get two of these over a Texas Roll. Tonkatsu Curry: Quite a lot of curry for the rice, great portions all around. I'd definitely come back for this. Overall, the quality of the food is quite good for a place that's more accessible from a price and wait perspective than other well known sushi restaurants. Parking is the biggest issue. read more

"Oh, what is a girl to do when she is craving some sushi; check-in with Yelp of course!" Miyo has received a lot of good reviews, and there are plenty of drool-worthy photos that got my eyeballs excited...so I decided to check them out. Their website has to-go ordering built in which was pretty convenient so I popped on, dropped a quick $70 bucks, and was all set. (They have pretty good lunch deals from Mon-Friday 11:00AM to 2:30PM). FOOD: I got an appetizer, two of their lunch combos, and two type of fish for nigiri sushi. (Bonus: they have a freebie when you check-in on Yelp). When I picked up my food, I checked in with the Yelp app, and got a free beverage (alcohol not included) that I saved for later. - SHRIMP TEMPURA (4 shrimp) - light, crispy, and the shrimp was not overcooked! So good!! They warmed up nicely in the oven and were not oily. - SUSHI COMBO (9-pieces of chef choice nigiri sushi + miso soup) - great deal, & delicious! - SASHIMI COMBO C: (5 pieces of chef choice nigiri sushi + 6 pieces sashimi + miso soup) - another great lunch deal, thick pieces of sashimi and sushi! - SALMON (Sake) nigiri 2 pieces - thick & good salmon. - YELLOWTAIL TORO sushi nigiri - nice & fatty yellowtail. VERDICT: All-in-all, I was really happy with the meal. Good quality fish, (not amazing but very enjoyable at this price point); no items were missing from our order, and everything was packed nicely.
