I've been having some serious personal issues lately, so I decided to take a long drive out into the desert to clear my head. I ended up in Pahrump and, with a sense of adventure and a willingness to explore, happened upon this little French bakery. Located in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it strip mall, O Happy Bread doesn't exactly stand out. I was super curious about a business like this in the wasteland of Pahrump, so I went inside. Note that this business has a very small outdoor patio area with a couple of tables so you can dine-in safely. I won't eat inside establishments right now. They also have a small menu of sandwiches, which would make it a great spot for a light lunch. I had the intention of getting an espresso, but the pastries smelled so good that I ended up purchasing a sack of carbs. There were a few bakers in the back working away, plucking fresh croissants from the oven. I was there around 11:30 am on a Saturday, and most of the items had been cleaned out. As with most bakeries, it's always better to go as early as possible for the best selection. I got a small loaf of bread, a plain croissant, and a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was crispy and not very sweet, and it reminded me of the type of treat you can buy in many of the bakeries in New York City's Little Italy neighborhood. I took a couple of bites and that was enough. I would not buy a cookie here again. The bread fared much better. It was a small French-style loaf with a chewy texture and great flavor. Not too salty, not too bland. This was good. The crown jewel was the plain croissant! It was super flaky and sooooo buttery. The bottom had a few bits of cinnamon on it, which I think was from cross-contamination with another pastry. No matter, because it gave the pastry a little bit of a kick. I intended to take just a few bites of the oversized croissant, but ended up devouring the entire thing while I was sitting outside my car, staring at the desert. I suppose you could say O Happy Bread delivered more emotional therapy than most anything else, because for a few moments, I was happy. I highly recommend this bakery! The employees were cheerful and friendly, and it felt good to support a truly local business. It can't be easy to run a place like this in Pahrump, so try to go out of your way to visit. read more

This is a cute, charming little French bakery, wonderful baguettes, and pastries not to mention croissants and quiches that said I had a baguette burger. It had grilled onions. I substituted Gureay cheese for cheddar and roasted tomatoes delicious It was huge with french fries and well with the money. The salads and soup sounded delicious and from the looks of what was coming out of the kitchen looked appetizing. If you're in the area do yourself a favor and give them a try. read more

We miss O Happy Bread because they're no longer at the Downtown Summerlin farmers market so we made sure to drop by during our first visit to Pahrump. Picked up Lobster Bisque to go (Friday special and the hype is real so no wonder they always sell out!), Pain Blanc (softer than a baguette!), Bread Pudding (we missed this the most -- always good), Moelleux (chocolate cake that's like a fudge brownie but better -- surprisingly good and the # 1 pastry from O Happy Bread that we will be getting again if we make it back to Pahrump!), and Rochers Coco (coconut macaroon -- the best consistency!). Very nice ladies at the counter! Expensive but not too sweet and worth it! The cafe/bakery may look like it needs a makeover but cannot not go here when in Pahrump! read more

Came here for dinner while visiting friends over the weekend. Fantastic dinner, I had the salmon with rice and a beurre blanc sauce. We had reservations since it's a small place with limited seating, so we got seated as soon as we walked in. When you walk in, you walk past all the yummy looking pastries, which are very tempting. About the only thing I can ding them for is my salmon was a touch dry but still great flavor. We will have to keep this place in mind when we come back to visit. read more

The last few times o have been there to buy the palmiers they were either gone or burnt. The lady behind the counter said they are always like that, that's how they are made. The selection of pastries were unparalleled, everything you see is freshly made on site! Speaking as a British national who has visited various patisseries across Europe this American enterprise catapults the patisserie/cafe experience leaps forward! Upon entry you are greeted with display cases stockpiled with a broad spectrum of freshly baked pastries, many of which are considered national treasures across various countries (each item has a display plaque signifying its associated country). Eat in or take out it doesn't matter, either way you're in for a treat! I was so impressed that I revisited the establishment on the return leg of my trip! The cafe has an extensive menu with a large selection of options. Fish & chips (fries) is considered a national dish in Britain. I couldn't refuse sampling this dish on American soil! I do not say this lightly, this jewel of the desert is and remains the only place outside of my home country to match the true taste of home - they got the mushy peas spot on! I highly recommend seeking this treasure out. Whether it's enroute or a slight detour on your journey I encourage you to do so. The friendly and attentive staff create a wonderful welcoming ambience coupled with an extensive cafe menu and fairly priced generously sized pastries make it the perfect refuge to take a load off. I used to go there a year ago but the food sucks! The soup I had tasted like it came from a can. Another time I went and the croissants were super dry and seemed to have been 4 days old. Yesterday my coworker brought in pastries and yet again the pastries were literally burnt! I have been to France and all over the world I know how French pastries should taste, they were burnt!!! Purchased an almond croissant and lemon bar. When I served the desserts I realized that the bottom of the croissant was burnt. Called bakery to suggest that they pull product from display case. The person stated that she noticed that the croissants were burnt. I questioned why she sold them. Auntie Val's Turkey Sandwich was really good, we stood in line behind 3 ladies for quite a while, while other workers did stuff. There was a lot of decor, newspapers, community boards and stuff to look at to keep us busy though. We ordered and sat down, everything that was ready like our water, then beignets, then latte, then food they announced by name and we stood up to get it from the counter. Our table hadn't been cleaned off but it wasn't bad just old drink ring marks. The beignets were really good, flavorful and sweet! Such a nice treat and I had a pumpkin spice latte which was okay. I liked some elements of the decor, and really liked the newspaper about how the family moved from France to open up the bakery. The veggies were fresh and all of the food was good!! This a small bakery so don't expect any atmosphere. The bread is really good and the prices reflect that. Mostly is baguettes and French bread. In certain days they have dinners and lunches. Haven't tried yet but did try coffee which wasn't bad. Would come back again. read more

This review is from three French visitors and me (an American). We were excited to try this place, and upon walking in, the presentation was very nice. Their bread looked amazing. We ordered two hamburgers, two sandwiches, one salad, and a few pastries. The girl taking our order was very sweet. After waiting about 10 minutes, we were told the fries we ordered would come 10 minutes after our food because they needed to replace the oil in the fryer during their lunch rush hour. We waited another 10 minutes, and everyone received their food except for one person and minus the fries. We were assured the missing meal was coming shortly. After 5 more minutes, I got up to ask for plates and silverware. We finished eating and ordered some bread to go, reminding them that we were still waiting for a hamburger. They assured us again that it was coming. After another 10 minutes, we asked for the hamburger to be taken off our bill because we had a 7-hour car ride ahead, everyone had finished eating lunch and we all shared with the person who did not get their food. They then found our bill and said, "Oh, now I know why you didn't get it--it's not on the ticket." We thanked them and left. What I don't understand is why we were told multiple times that the hamburger was coming when it wasn't. Also, how do you drop off food without silverware or plates when serving a salad? The desserts were mediocre; we had a Napoleon and baklava, but the baklava wasn't authentically flavored. Overall, the staff was nice but incompetent. It's worth mentioning that many other customers were also asking where their food was. If you go, get a salad--it's hard to mess up and was great. However, the burger was disappointing, especially for a French hamburger. read more
