I can't say enough great things about Biale! I genuinely stumbled upon this place because my friend wanted to bring her dog with us and this was listed as a dog friendly winery. I was also curious about zins, as there really aren't other places in the valley that specialize in this. Long story short, I've spent the last few days telling anyone who will listen to visit Robert Biale! We had the pleasure of having Roberto pouring for us and he made us feel welcome right off the bat! It also didn't hurt that no less than three people offered to bring my friend's pup water (just a nice and sweet gesture!). Anyways, back to the wine. We were able to try four different zins and a petit Syrah. We got some lovely history about the vineyard and the family and the wine that was just so fun to hear! Roberto was so sweet as we mentioned our love for another varietal, and he brought that out for us to try too! One thing I firmly believe is that Napa has a lot of great wine, but what keeps me coming back is the customer service! And boy, this was such a fantastic experience! So good that my friend and I each debated joining the wine club. I didn't, only because I don't know that I need 4 zins per quarter, on top of all the wine I already have! But, I did pick up three bottles to take home and I'm already planning my next trip up to introduce other people to this lovely experience! Wow! We visited for a tasting in October and totally enjoyed it. The wines are delicious, esp Aldo's and Black Chicken. (There are plenty of actual black chickens running around, and there is a story about them going pack to prohibition.) Robert himself took us around, and we learned about why they have boxes for barn owls. While many wineries use pesticides to keep rodents away, Biale encourages barn owl to catch and eat the varmits, meaning less chemicals needed overall. How cool is that? We joined their membership and are excited to receive our second shipment. You see, we've almost finished the first box! read more

Well it did not disappoint from the beautiful location, the variety of Zins and the charming and entertaining Tom our host we left enjoying this new winery. I've been to several tastings here, and every time has been a wonderful experience ... almost like I'm visiting a friend's place. The tastings here are an event. As you walk in, you'll see your party's name at the table where you'll be tasting. The staff have been there a long time and have all the Robert Biale lore down pat. The order of wines is thoughtfully arranged, and each successive tasting builds upon the previous ones. I love the palate-cleansing breadsticks, though! Flew an hour for two days of tasting in the region. Biale was my favorite of the trip. Top-notch tasting wines with a cozy bucolic aura. My friend and I had Andrew L. as our guide and he is the perfect person for the job. He was sophisticated without seeming pretentious, professional without feeling corporate, and attentive without being overbearing. While I did have not had the pleasure to meet other guides at Biale, doing better than Andrew L. would be quite the feat. It's been years since I've been back here and many more since I had my membership. My supply is running low so I had to come back and refresh the palettes with the current stock. This is a beautiful winery that focuses on Zinfandels and do a excellent job at it. I'd say it's small winery but produces amazing wine. They have increased their tasting area since I last been here and all have great views of the vineyards while you sit back and enjoy. Their signature Zin "Black Chicken" is an all time favorite and many cabs have been enjoyed throughout the years by my family. Membership rates are fairly reasonable and well worth it for all your rear round tastings. If you're planning to go to Napa, this is a must stop and preferably at the beginning. Let me address the elephant in the room before I write anything more: I didn't like the wine at Robert Biale Vineyards. It's not just that I didn't like it, I really, really didn't like anything I was poured. That being said, my experience was quite lovely and the hospitality was warm and friendly. I booked a reservation for two people on a Monday at 10 am. I'm a GEMS member so Biale extended a 2-for-1 tasting offer, which meant two of us would get a seated tasting for just $30. I arrived right on time and wandered the grounds trying to find the entrance to the tasting room. It's a bit confusing but once you find the correct parking area, walk straight back as far as you can past the chicken coop (yes, really), towards the vines. We were seated at a high top teak table with great views of the vineyard. The seating area was covered and a little chilly with the morning breezes blowing through. Our table was set with a wine glass for each of us and a tasting menu with price sheet. Nothing more. Of course, the ubiquitous Wine Club pamphlet was also present. Since all of the wines we tasted were reds, I was surprised that there weren't any crackers or other small palate cleansers on the table. We weren't even offered water! Perhaps that would've helped me distinguish some of the flavors (although of course a cracker would not have made me enjoy the wines). At a minimum, it would've given me more gusto to power through some of the wines, especially the ones that I truly didn't care for. There was one other table with two guests already seated, but they were a bit away from us so it felt very private. Our host, a laid back, hippie surfer dude type, was delightful. He spoke in such hushed tones that I felt like I needed to whisper back to him. All of this set a quiet and relaxing mood, which really added to the homey farmhouse atmosphere. Biale makes a laundry list of different Zinfandels, but none appealed to my palate. The fruit is definitely a softer style (with what the winery likes to call "nuanced flavors"), but I just call it flat and boring. I do tend to enjoy the jammy, bold, and spicy Zins, and this isn't where you'll find that style. We tried five wines at our tasting: the 2016 Black Chicken Zinfandel ($48, light and thin in both color and flavor), the 2016 Old Kraft Zinfandel ($52, tasted like an identical twin to a pinot noir), the 2016 Varozza Zinfandel ($52, restrained old world style), the 2016 Royal Punishers Petite Sirah ($48, the darkest in color but boring fruit), and the 2015 Dessert Wine ($65, not too sweet and aged in Burgundian oak). I found all of the wines to be overpriced for what they were, but we left with a bottle of the dessert wine because it was the one we sort of enjoyed. Perhaps our host picked up on the fact that we didn't really like the wines because he waived both of our tasting fees, which I thought was extremely generous. I'd caution you to do a little research before booking a tasting here, and make a point to try at least one or two of these wines beforehand. It felt a little awkward since it's extremely rare to go to a wine tasting and enjoy nothing that was poured. This is a very leisurely tasting so allow at least 90 minutes. Even if you aren't a fan of any of the wines, you'll surely appreciate the view. read more

Best tasting experience by far in Napa. We live in a the SF Bay Area and frequent Napa. The tasting area is intimate, not crowded and beautiful view. We ended up doing a tasting at 4 wines but probably had 8-9 pours of different wines. The 1:1 attention of the staff is amazing! Price point of bottles are good value. We ended up purchasing 6 bottles. Recommend if you want a quiet space to taste away from the bachelorette & large groups. Low pressure to buy bottles. read more

We were extremely disappointed with our experience with the tasting room at Biale Vineyards. We are (were) fans on their Black Chicken Zinfandel and specifically made sure to visit their tasting room during our trip to Napa. Here's what we experienced. 1. No one greeted us upon arrival. We just saw our name on a table and decided to sit down 2. Tom (our sever) started out being a good host but soon lost interest in talking with us about the wines in favor of the larger group next to us. He spent most of his time with that table and even gave them second pours which were quite large in volume. He spent a total of 5 seconds with us during our 3rd selection and quickly left us for the larger group. We felt very unwelcome. 3. The pours were all done in the same glass which seemed rather odd. All the other tastings we have experienced were done with fresh glasses. I guess Biale isn't interested in making sure we have the best tasting experience with their wines. We were prepared to buy a lot of wine after the tasting was over but decided not to purchase any and just doubled up on the next vineyard we visited. Their loss.... read more

My step sister brought my mom and I here and we absolutely enjoyed the wine and the atmosphere. We reserved an appointment for 10:30M and were lucky to get the couch seating. It was perfect with the heating and the comfortable seats. It made for a beautiful Sat morning wine tasting. My mom and I weren't expecting to go wine tasting so it was a pleasant surprise. Loved the atmosphere and grounds here. Once you are seated for your tasting, it feels like you are "within the vines". The back patio felt like I was back in Ohio, but instead of cornfields it was vines. We were hosted by a lovely young woman who was extremely knowledgeable about the wines, the black chicken story, and could answer any random question that my friend had about the winemaking process. I am a late harvest FAN, so I really didn't enjoy any of the wines here, but did buy a bottle of black chicken because I really dig the story behind it. Can't wait to share the story when I open the bottle. The thing that bugged me here is they did not comp the tasting, even after we each bought a bottle. They didn't even comp ONE tasting. Guess it's naive to expect hospitality from any Napa vineyards, but this place managed to subvert my lowest expectations. Upon arriving a bit early for our reservation, we received a curt "No," when we asked if we could hang out and enjoy the grounds, and instead should leave and come back in *14* minutes. I almost thought the gentleman was joking, but apparently he was serious. The place was very nearly empty but for one other party. Dozens of tables. My husband and I are Biale club members and decided to do a Zinner Sanctum tasting during a recent visit to Napa Valley. During this tasting you compare the current released vintage with a library selection. For our tasting it was the Founding Farmers, Monte Rosso and Aldo's Vineyard Zinfandels. It was interesting to see how the Zinfandel changes when it ages. Our tasting was with Jen and is was relaxing to sit outside on the couches trying the different wines. We took a walk out to the vines and learned A LOT about pruning, disease and harvest. We did a lot of tours and tastings during this trip and I think this was the most informative on vineyard management. Jen was up to the task of answering all of our questions. We're a fan of Biale wines and shipped home a case and a half of Zinfandel, Syrah and Barbera. If you are also a fan of Zin, it's definitely worth your time to make an appointment. read more

We recently visited Napa and were lucky that our driver recommended Robert Biale. Visiting this winery was the highlight of our trip and our host, John, made it all the more memorable! Robert Biale has the most delicious Zinfandel and Petit Sirah, which was a nice change from the majority of our tastings that revolved around tasting bolder Cabernets. We especially loved the 2019 Stagecoach Vineyard and the 2019 Royal Punishers. In addition to the top quality wine, the history about Robert Biale was very interesting to learn about. Right off the start I fell in love with the vineyard, it's so quaint and simple, which to me is gorgeous. If you don't know the story of this winery, you should book a trip, have a glass and listen (make sure to make reservations). Our table was personalized with our parties name waiting (no other vineyard did that, high five!!!!). As soon as we sat down, we were greeted by a smiling face, he was a cross between Aqua Man and Khal Drogo. He started off with a joke and put everyone at ease. As we went through the tastings our host made sure that we were taken care of, and made it a point to let us know that if we had any questions or if we didn't like the wines, to let him know. Again, great customer service. He sat with us and we got to know about him and that is definitely what made this a point above. The black chicken is what they are known for, and it did not disappoint. Another favorite was the 2017 Royal Punisher. It was a very balanced, tannin forward Sirah. This was our last stop on our amazing trip and was probably right at the top in experience. Andrew was very very knowledgeable about the company and the wines.
