I stopped in this morning for a treat and decided on the chocolate eclair. The poor thing was sitting on the display case looking at me with puppy dog eyes. It was beautiful. The dough was perfectly brown and crisp. The layer of chocolate icing on top was neat and glistening. I couldn't wait to feel it on my lips. As soon as I got home, I lifted the chocolate iced masterpiece from its box. The angelic dessert was so heavy due to the amount of cream filling that had been stuffed into it, that for a moment, I thought I might need a second set of hands just to bring it up to my mouth. As I took my first bite, the cream started pouring out onto my chin, onto my chest and between my legs. I was like a beggar, desperately trying to salvage what had been graciously given to me. I heart Oak Park Bakery. I totally agree with another reviewer that it is a blast from the past. Walking through the doors takes me back to my childhood, from the neon sign in the window to the old fashioned display cases to the helpful ladies behind the counter. This is the kind of place that every town needs. Dunkin Donuts can't hold a candle to these REAL homemade donuts. I'll take the train from the city to here ANY day. read more

These rum balls are like crack. Seriously, I haven't been able to sleep because I think the chocolate is keeping me awake. So I guess I'll just review the bakery I got them from, where magical elves make rum balls just once a year. I got the last balls of 2009 at 3:35 pm on Dec. 24. Don't be sad though, paczki day is right around the corner. Yummy filled doughnuts, in so many flavors - lemon, berry, creme, chocolate, bavarian. I think there's over 15 flavors but be ready to wait in line cause everyone knows Mardi Gras is the only day of the year to find them here. If it's your birthday, might I suggest a butter cream frosted cake with strawberries. Their frosting is light and fluffy and so so yummy. I'm also a fan of the sprinkle covered butter cookies and coffee cakes. The prices are more than reasonable and they open at like 5am. I wish they would take over the old coffee shop space next door and provide seating and lattes. They are old school sinful here, but it's worth the guilt. read more

Look there are a 100+ neighborhood bakeries in Chicago, and I've been to many, but this place is special. The Danishes, sweet rolls, coffee cakes, donuts, and bday cakes are simply a level above even some of the expensive bakery boutiques downtown. I've been coming here for the past 20 + years for their fresh strawberry punchkis (still dont know how to spell it!) . The fresh strawberry coffecake is DELICIOUS!! Other flavored coffeecake is also very moist and the bakery is very generous with the pecans. Over the years, the price is very reasonable. Sometimes they have sales on coffeecake buy 1 get 1 50%. My coworker brought in a cream cheese filled coffee cake. Oh. My. God. It was so delicious. I cannot personally attest to their customer service (yet), but this coffee cake was so fresh, moist and went perfect with our morning coffee. Will be surprising my coworkers with one soon! read more

This old school bakery may not look great from the outside but who cares? The glazed donuts are the best in the city. They are awesome. Light, airy and wonderfully delicious. We also tried the raspberry sweet rolls which were good. My partner loved, loved, loved the eclairs. They are HUGE. We'll have to go back and try some more goodies. In another bakery review I mentioned my donut club at work. Self proclaimed donut snobs we are. In an effort to always try a new place our south side member happened upon Oak Park Bakery. Well let me just say we're looking for more south siders to join so they can hit OPB when their turn is up. I have never had such a dense donut before, speaking of the custard filled boston cremes (both choco iced and plain). The latter happen to be my favorite. We joke about having to carry 2 dozen on a long walk and having to rest because of how heavy the boxes are. Let me assure you, this is a good thing! I usually use a Boston creme as the measure of a bakeries quality and OPB passes in that test. Basically you can't go wrong with any thing from there. read more

I know there are already a million great reviews of Oak Park Bakery, but I just wanted to add another. Needed a last minute cake for my daughter's graduation and they were able to make it the same day -- I called early in the morning. They could not have been more friendly or more sweet or more accommodating. The cake was perfect when I picked it up and the young girls who work there are 100% friendly and kind -- they really made picking up a cake a fun event. It is a total mood-lifter to go to this bakery and you cannot possibly leave without feeling that not everything/everyone in life is snarky, over-priced, negative, etc. read more

Every Wednesday, a member of our staff is supposed to bring treats for everyone. Being new to Oak Park, I just went over to Whole Foods and bought some scones. However, another staff member brought some goodies from Oak Park Bakery in honor of her own birthday. By scones were left untouched and everyone, including myself, had several helpings of the delicious treats from the OP Bakery. I am definitely going to the Bakery next time I am supposed to bring snacks for the staff. read more

I had really high expectations for this place as it had really good reviews. Baked goods are dry and they dont sell cake by the slice. They have a good selection of bread though. If you are craving something sweet rather go to the custard shop across the street. read more

Yum! I just moved to the area and was looking for a fabulous bakery and I have found it with OPB! Cupcake, doughnut, and coffee cake all amazing! I gave up Kay's bakery because they had such bad customer service, and I got the same bad attitude here! BUT, I needed to order a birthday cake from somewhere, so I figured I'd look past the girls who know nothing at the counter (and could care less that they work there) and order something. My husband picked the cake up today and if it was ME who went I would have thrown it back at them! What a JOKE of a cake! How hard is it to make a small cake and frost it? I'm livid and will end up baking my own cake for my son's first bday tomorrow. Very disappointing from the moment I walked in. And their butter cookies are flavorless and the smilie face cookies sucked too...and I'm not just saying that because I'm mad. I have NO idea how this place gets good reviews. read more

This is a real, old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness bakery, which is so hard to find. Open early enough in the AM to feed my morning commute with freshly baked goodies, staffed by an extremely helpful and friendly bunch, and items that are simple and done right. I've ordered cakes here before and they were average looking, but quite tasty. However, last weekend they did a cake for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary via a phone order with short notice - in which I had a lot to say about how I wanted it to look. Oak Park Bakery is a throwback to my youth! It's a lovely old-school bakery that maintains it's charm and low prices. I'm a fan of the sweet rolls, almond pretzels and the donuts. Walking in there feels very comfortable! The staff has always been friendly and very accommodating. I've seen them with their "regulars" and the appear to really go out of their way for them - and I'm sure they'd do that for any customer. read more

I lived in Oak Park for over a year and never knew about this place. Until a couple of my friends recommended this place. I recently moved back to the city and I travel here once a week to pick up what I'm going to need for the week. I was in on a Saturday but they didn't have a big selection. They told me they were closed on Sundays and Mondays. My partner almost cried because she had to wait 2 days before getting her pastries. They let me place an order for Tuesday. When I picked it up it was nice and fresh. I recommended to my partner that we just get a couple of pastries and coffee cakes from the local jewel to serve at our Sunday brunch. She was ready to pack my stuff and ship me out. We will never again buy any coffee cakes, cheese danishes,donuts, or pastries from anywhere else but this bakery. They are to die for.. On certain days or lucky days you can get buy one get one free donuts,morning buns, or pecan rolls. They have a nice selection of cookies as well. My daughter loves them. They're fresh and delicious. If you're anywhere in the area of Oakpark stop by and check out this bakery, you will not regret it! You can't go wrong with anything you pick. I don't understand how the prices can remain so affordable when the cost of flour, butter, milk, eggs (etc.) are now so high. I'm not complaining, just amazed! The quality is very good. I love the chocolate donuts and the apple coffee cake. We ordered a chocolate cake for a birthday here and it was wonderful - and only $16! I was not crazy about the buttercream frosting, but the cake itself was perfectly moist and flavorful. This place is wonderful! Great medium sided cakes for $20. The coffee cakes are the best thing there though. The only problem is that when you go too late they're out of a lot of stuff. But if you're planning a party and need lots of stuff you can call a couple days ahead and pick it up. read more
