He was the first ENT to check to see if I had allergies that could be an underlying trigger. I was amazed to learn that I not only had allergies, but that I had extreme allergies to common environmental grasses and trees. I have completed 3+ years of allergy shots at his office, and have seen a big decrease in my Meniere's symptoms. After completing years of allergy shots, I asked why I might still need Breathe Right strips to sleep at night. He did a CT scan and found that I also had a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates. He did a septoplasty with inferior turbinate reduction for me 10 days ago. I was anxious about the procedure, as I'd heard of others online who had complications and difficult recoveries. Dr. Rodriguez patiently and empathetically answered all of my questions before the surgery. I did not feel rushed at all...he wanted me to ask everything and feel comfortable. The surgery was performed at the Deer Valley Surgery and Endoscopy Center, and everyone there was amazing. The anesthesiologist also answered all of my questions before the surgery. Recovery from this surgery is not super fun, but Dr. Rodriguez was right; the first 2-3 days was the worst (very little air going through my nose), but then it got easier. I never needed the prescription pain medication, just Tylenol. When I was concerned that I was bleeding too much, I called the office and sent a photo. I was reassured in minutes that all was well. I really appreciated his quick response. I had the nasal splints removed a week after the surgery, and I am SO happy! I can breathe easily through my nose, and I can sleep on either side without needing to use a Breathe Right strip. I have an Apple Watch, and I got a sleep score of 98 last night, which is a huge improvement! The 2 points were lost because I went to bed late, not because I woke up. While my assigned doctor is undoubtedly knowledgeable, his ability to connect with patients is truly above and beyond. I had trusted my previous pulmonologist for over a decade and was hesitant to change doctors, but I needed to do so for geographical reasons. He has made me feel completely comfortable being in his care, and he is not afraid to challenge the opinions of other doctors to ensure I am getting the most appropriate care. The staff is also incredibly kind and respectful. I particularly wanted to mention my experience today during my breathing test. The technician was able to compel me to quit vaping without being judgmental; in fact, I am not sure if that was even his specific intent, but that is exactly what is taking place. I feel very comfortable at their practice. While the office is busy and parking can sometimes be difficult, I believe that is simply a sign of a good practice that will likely outgrow its current space in the next couple of years. I was only down with a cold since August 2012 to today 8/10/13 (Normal my colds or flu turned into walking pneumonia or bronchitis - yeah that was my 2011 & 2012) . However, the repeated issues I encountered with the front office staff and communication ultimately overshadowed the positives. My first experience with the office set the tone. I arrived 7 minutes late due to traffic within their parking lot while trying to manage a sick one-year-old with a 101-degree fever from recurrent ear infections and a very active two-year-old. I understand that I was late and that office policies must be followed, but the front desk employee was extremely dismissive and showed no empathy for the situation. I was turned away and told to come back later that afternoon. Another concerning experience occurred 15 days after my son's ear tube surgery. He developed what we later learned was an allergic reaction to anesthesia. When I called the after-hours line on a Saturday, I was told they only assist patients who are within 14 days of surgery. After explaining the situation, the representative eventually agreed to help but repeatedly stated that she would "get in trouble" for doing so. As a worried parent, that was not reassuring. The most frustrating experience involved my son's ongoing ear infections after tube placement. Multiple antibiotics had failed, and I left a voicemail explaining that I work night shift, sleep during the day, and I asked that my husband be contacted ASAP. No one called him that day. When I woke up and called the office, I was met with some of the rudest customer service I have experienced in healthcare. I was given no help before the office closed. My son spent the entire night awake and crying from an untreated ear infection. The next morning, we were simply told to use Ciprofloxacin ear drops that we ALREADY had at home. This information could have been communicated in under two minutes the evening before and would have saved my son a painful night. My baby developed full body hives immediately following his surgery, and we thought the cause was the Cipro ear drops, so that's why I was hesitant to give them. Turns out it was just the anesthesia, but we had no way of knowing that until we tried the Cipro drops again. I have worked in healthcare for 10 years, and what stood out most throughout these experiences was the lack of communication, empathy, and basic customer service. They will hold your refills and lab orders "hostage" to make you come into the clinic so they can charge you another co-pay and bill your insurance for another office visit. Background. I went to the same doctor for almost 20 years. Unfortunately, he had a stroke and could no longer practice medicine. We had a great relationship. Every year, I would faithfully pick up my lab orders, get my labs drawn, then schedule my yearly appointment to discuss the results and make any necessary changes. If something unusual came up mid-year, I would make an appointment to see him. If I needed a specialist, he would recommend a good one. Perhaps I was spoiled with this kind of patient-doctor relationship. When searching for a new primary care doctor, I asked my friends who lived nearby for a referral. Dr. Scott Marquard with Thunderbird Family Medicine received a lukewarm recommendation and had decent reviews, so I decided to give him a try. It turned out to be a BIG mistake.  Red Flag #1. The clinic charges a yearly fee just for the privilege of going to them.  Red Flag #2. On my initial appointment with Dr. Marquard, I brought in my 20 year history printed out for him along with recent lab work. My vitals were taken by the technician and I waited for the doctor. He came in, shook my hand, then we had a ~15 minute discussion, then he shook my hand and left. No look at the eyes, ears, throat. No listen to the lungs or heart. No nerve reflex test. No palpations. Nothing. Only conversation in which we discussed my current prescriptions and an upcoming international trip, among other things. I was told to call in for future prescriptions refills. Red Flag #3. When I called to get my prescriptions renewed, I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. This was contrary to what we had discussed on my first visit. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment. My resolution was to call 98 point 6 (my telephone insurance service) and pay $5 to get my prescriptions renewed (they asked to see my lab work which was current). Red Flag #4. When it was time to get my annual bloodwork done, I called to get a test added to the lab order (I found out about a test that could tell if you had a genetic disposition for blood clots - my dad died of a DVT). I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment. My resolution was to skip that test and go ahead and get my blood drawn. Red Flag #5. As my international trip to India and Nepal was getting close, I called to get prescriptions for an anti-nausea and antibiotic "just in case" as we had discussed during the initial meeting. Guess what? I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment to discuss CDC guidelines. My resolution was to wait until my annual and visit an expensive travel clinic that would be much more knowledgeable about international travel.  Red Flag # 6. After my annual and after my international trip, I called in to get a prescription refilled. Guess what???  I was told by the front desk that I needed to make an appointment. When I asked the front desk to ask the doctor about it, she confirmed that I needed an appointment. I called again when I was almost out of medication, I told the front desk that the situation was "b*llsh#t", and that I had been in 8 weeks prior and my lab work was only 9 weeks old. She refused to connect me to a doctor, so I tried to use their portal to make the request to the doctor directly. Dr. Marquard told me via the portal that I verbally assaulted the staff and was terminated from the clinic. This was not a huge disappointment as I had already researched, found, and made a future appointment with another primary care doctor.  Note #1. All this occurred in a period of less than 8 months. Note 2. I saw another provider (NP - nurse practitioner) other than Dr. Marquard for my annual. I can't find the name as my access to the portal has apparently been terminated. I remember that a PA signed off on the visit (also a red flag???). So, patient BEWARE!!! I highly recommend finding another clinic if you value your time and money. If you choose to go to this clinic and see these practitioners, make sure to get prescriptions filled and lab work orders in hand before you leave their office.
