We came here for dinner after a long day of hiking in the redwoods and were so glad we did, as the food was incredibly tasty and satisfying. Oaxaca Grill is a wonderful, family-run restaurant in downtown Eureka, operated by the parents, Carmen and Tony, and their daughter, Yuri. Carmen is the main chef, and you can truly taste the care she puts into making amazing homemade Mexican food. The ambiance is casual and cozy. We were traveling as two families and easily found tables on a Tuesday evening for an early dinner. The main dishes completely hit the spot: * Garlicky Soft Prawn Tacos: My wife ordered these, which were served with sautéed onions, fresh garlic, and the most amazing, flavorful mango salsa on the side. * Spicy Oaxaca Chicken Mole: I got this special dish, which featured a tender chicken breast topped with authentic, spicy Oaxacan mole. This mole is savory, rich, and incredibly flavorful, made from thirty imported Oaxacan ingredients. It came served with yummy rice and beans. * Prawn Soft Tacos: We also ordered these, and they were fantastic, paired with a crisp jicama coleslaw. * Kids' Dishes: Our children ordered from the children's plate options. My son got the chicken enchiladas, which came with fries and beans, and he absolutely loved it. My daughter had the cheese and bean burrito, which she really enjoyed as well. * Desserts: To wrap up the meal, we tried the coconut flan and the crème brûlée. Both were a sweet end to the night, and the crème brûlée in particular was absolutely amazing. Overall, it was a fantastic, comforting dining experience with wonderful hospitality. We came here due to the great reviews! We've also tried a few different Mexican restaurants in the area and hasn't been impressed. So we were hoping this one will impress us. Parking was street parking and easy to find. We were seated right away, and service was great! We ordered a carnitas burrito and a few pastor tacos. The burrito barely had any meat, it was 95% rice and beans. The tacos were just ok. I don't think we will return. Not sure why this place has so many good reviews... read more

My last night in Eureka was.... very wet to put it politely. No matter, this town has more than its share of comforting restaurants. One of which is this rather comfortable place on Henderson Street, where the help was more than welcoming, recognizing that its patrons needed to adjust from the rain, so they encouraged all to use the coat hooks. Of course, that's not why one comes to a restaurant, and I had some shrimp soup, which not only warmed me up, but kept me going until my drive home the next morning. They do have mole de chocolate as an option for your entree, a definite plus in my judgement, but the enchiladas I got were still a bit too salty for my taste. I have to disclose the food was fresh out of the kitchen, knowing that is a huge relief especially for those who I know that have had problems with cross contamination at similar restaurants. At least, It is better than a few of the other Mexican places I have been to in the area. Three of us arrived at a weird time of 5:30. No one else was in the restaurant. After a slight hesitation, we decided to stay and are really glad we did! Within 10-15 minutes all but one table were filled. Two of us ordered chimichangas. They liked that they were very crispy. I had a chicken fajita mole burrito. It was outstanding. This restaurant has the friendliest staff and the most delicious food and every member of the family loved everything we go- the garlicky soft tacos were fantastic and SUPER GARLICKY, the fajita soft tacos were seasoned well and the chimichanga was perfectly cooked and enormous. I asked for hot salsa to go with my shrimp burrito plate. The server brought me a ramekin of spicy mole and charge me $6 for it. When I asked why it's $6, he said if I ordered the mole burrito plate which has the same mole on the side it is $1.50, so it's cheaper, but if I ordered mole on the side (although it literally is the same thing) it is $6. After the 4.5 hour drive to Eureka, my fiance and I wanted a decent place to find dinner. Our hotel receptionist referred us to a website of good local eats, but I always still consult Yelp to make a final decision. We decided to try Oaxaca Grill since it had good ratings and plus the food looked amazing. The food was in fact delicious and they gave relatively large portion sizes for the amount you pay for! The service was also awesome! After entering, we were approached by one of the staff members who took our order (there was no dine-in due to COVID precautions). He was very friendly and made small conversation with us since he recognized that we were from out of town. 4 out of 5 stars! Try Oaxaca Grill if you are ever in Eureka! read more

We came here for an early dinner based on the reviews on Yelp. We got to the restaurant and there was only one other couple there. We were immediately sat at a table and our server brought over chips, water and two different kinds of salsa (spicy and mild). I had the carnitas and my husband had the fajita quesadilla. My carnitas came with two huge flour tortillas, avocado salsa and rice and beans. It also included a couple of the day or one time through the salad bar. My husband had the quesadilla and it came with mango salsa or sour cream and guacamole on the side. We both loved our choices and will be back when we come into town!! read more

Oaxaca Grill came recommended by many locals and after one dinner, I'm a fan! We dined in on a Friday evening and the place was packed. Luckily there was available seating for two but if you are with a group or 5 or more, it's best to call ahead or come early. We were seated quickly but it took a while to get our orders in. There was only one waiter working that evening for a packed restaurant. I ordered the tetela combination which was the perfect amount of food. The tetela was made fresh, practically still sizzling when it came to the table! My husband had the Asada with shrimp which was also made fresh and had delicious flavor. Both meals came with the soup of the day which was a traditional black bean soup. The server was very busy the whole night but remained attentive and friendly. The seating is somewhat cramped but comfortable and the facilities are clean. I would say this is one of my favorite Mexican Restaurants in Eureka! read more

We were early into a looong drive and this place was rated well, so we stopped in. Google maps was really only partially helpful and it dropped us a couple blocks up the one way street, but at least it was in the direction of traffic and it was hard to miss the yellow building a couple blocks down. The service was wonderful, prompt, friendly. The food was fresh, hot, and delicious. As tempted as I was to get a chimichanga or some tacos, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try the gordita. This is the best Mexican food restaurant we've found in the Eureka and Arcata area. I had the garlicky prawn burrito and my brother, the garlicky prawn tacos. I had 2/3rds of my burrito left over (it was very good, just very large and I don't eat that much in one sitting). My brother ate all of his tacos, rice and beans but was quite full after. We thought the portions were generous enough (I saw someone else complain about that). We both enjoyed the food and planned to go back (and are glad to have found Oaxaca Grill to be quite tasty). We really enjoyed our visit to Oaxaca Grill. The staff was very friendly and patient in answering questions since several dishes are more regional. I ordered the Chile Ajo since I could usually count on pork being tender and the baby cactus intrigued me. My wife got the Carne Asada with Prawns which was very nicely seasoned, and tried a side of the spicy mole which is a welcome change from the sweeter variety. The sweet corn soup was also very tasty and nice change from a tortilla soup. I thought the prices were reasonable considering the quality and uniqueness of some of the items.
