The Melissa burrito has become a staple for me even tho I try to avoid burritos. The chile relleno in that burrito mixed with everything is so good, perfectly roasted with rich melted cheese. The food is all flavorful, especially all their homemade salsas. If you like it hot, get a salsa flight and try them all, you won't be disappointed. The family who runs Cocina is amazing as well, great people and attentive service. You can tell they care a lot about their food and their customers, much appreciated. I'd recommend calling ahead for to go orders, they will be very clear when it will be ready for pickup. The heavy set cashier lady was very rude. We called in an order on the phone and when we arrived, asked if we could take a seat instead. She told us no, even though several booths were open. Said it was their rule because of the cost for the to go containers. Uh, ok? We just spent $60 bucks and can't switch it to a sit down order? Then she didn't even say thank you after we still left a generous tip. Somebody please teach this lady some manners. The food was sub par and unfresh. The carnitas was at least a few days old. The carne asada was full of gristle (not fat, gristle that couldn't be chewed). Not a bite or 2, nearly half the meat portion was inedible gristle. The tomato tasted halfway spoiled and the jalapeños were nasty too. The tortilla, beans and rice, torta bread and avocado were all good, I could sense the potential, whoever owns the restaurant is CAPABLE of making great food. Unfortunately they would rather cut corners and pinch pennies than provide a consistently good meal. Frustrating. A common occurrence in Humboldt restaurants that wouldn't fly in a more competitive market, many of these restaurants try to pass off leftovers. Any good restaurant should cook all their meats fresh daily. Some of us were raised in areas with good Mexican restaurants, make our own carnitas at home, and can easily tell the difference between a freshly made carnitas and a 3+ day old carnitas. Frying it crispy doesn't mask all the unfresh off flavors. Extremely disappointing experience overall, ending in a long day of stomach aches and heartburn even after throwing most of the food away. A delicious bean dip with super thick and tasty chips to start. Baja fish taco that was actual Baja flavors, perfectly seasoned and cooked with a flavorful and spicy sauce. A taco salad with an array of fresh ingredients and super tender and delicious pork chili verde. A chile relleno with the most creamy cheese filling and sauce on top that my husband said was the best he had since moving to CA many years ago. To be honest, I was only disappointed that I didn't have room for more because everything looks like it hits here! have been going to Cocina Mariposa regularly since moving to Humboldt in January 2019. I have tried a fairly large portion of the menu at this point. Every single thing I have ordered has invariably been fresh and absolutely delicious. For me, particular highlights are the chili relleno plate, the tacos (with habanero salsa if you like spicy), and the California burrito. If you're into Mexican breakfast, their breakfast tortas and chilaquiles are excellent. But really, order anything that sounds good, it'll probably be great! Their agua frescas are also to die for. They are made with real juice and are unlike most of the agua frescas you'll have had in your life. They are also VERY knowledgeable about vegetarian and vegan cuisine, and are willing to alter menu items to fit these diets within reason. This review is long overdue, but I recommend Cocina Mariposa to the highest degree. It really is a gem in a restaurant landscape that is otherwise dubious. read more

The owner was there to take our order and make recommendations. Had the chili relleno, cheese enchilada, and chicken tacos. Food is still pretty good, but now they nickel-and-dime you at every turn. No salsa with your chips. Upcharge if you use a card. Upcharge if want more than one basket of chips. Upcharge for more than one Dixie cup of beans (Two spoonfuls for $2). Upcharge if you want light, or no ice in your beverage. I understand the restaurant business is tough, but I'd rather they add a little extra cost to my carnitas plate than to charge me for napkins and an extra fork. While I do eat a lot of Mexican food I like to try new places and today was the day I would try Cocina Mariposa. This restaurant is located in the club house of the Eureka Municipal golf course, there is plenty of parking and with the rhododendrons blooming around the golf course it was going to be a beautiful setting overlooking the golf course, a real pretty place for lunch. We walked into the club hour and all the Covid rules were being followed. The menu was posted or you could scan the menu with your phone. I have read the reviews that recommended the fish tacos, I ordered fish tacos and a machaca burrito with a lemonade. My wife ordered the same. We sat outside at the tables overlooking the golf course and our drinks were brought out to us. It took 15 minutes to get our food which seemed to long. When our food came the tacos were cold, way to cold but the burritos were hot and delicious. They do charge.50 for hot sauce which seemed odd. We were very disappointed with this being our first trip here. The service was good but the cold tacos were just to much, cannot recommend at this time read more

While in Eureka, I ate at Cocina Mariposa. The location of it seems quite odd as soon as you pull Into the parking lot which oversees a golf course, and even walking up the hill into the restaurant can throw you off because it seems like a convenience store initially before you look left and see a small restaurant. There is seating indoors and outdoors which is nice. Don't let the aesthetic throw you off through, because the food itself is completely delicious! This is a non vegan restaurant with a large vegan menu which was ideal for the group I went with. Everything was really good, even the service which was attentive and kind. This is one of those hidden gems you almost don't want to tell people about so it doesn't get too busy. But the food is just too good so the word must be spread. Agua Frescas are also incredible. Lots of vegan/vegetarian options and that special bean dip with the chips is so good. The owner is a very nice woman and works so hard to keep her little business running. The food here is great not going to lie about that but the owner of this establishment is very egoistically rude. I feel because her food is so good and she knows that she is full of herself and feels like she can talk to any customer however she wants. Well, in my case, I did a call in order and asked about what kind of salsas she had to which she decided to go off on me, and said " I don't have time to read to you what is on the menu we have a perfectly good menu online to which you are more than capable of going and seeing before ordering". That was completely uncalled for on her part and after speaking with a few other people, it turns out she is actually quite rude to many others. Yes her food is great especially her aguas frescas! (Her mom does most of the cooking) so yes, I recommend the food but if you happen to meet with the owner, FYI, be aware of her snottiness. Cocina Mariposa is a perfect example of Yelp getting the word out about excellent businesses. I would never have known about this place otherwise. The location is a bit strange. You do have to pull off into a golf course and veer toward the shop to the right. Right when you feel like you're in the wrong place because you've never golfed in your life, just keep going to the shop because it shares its space with the restaurant. And it's worth the minor confusion. We ordered what would be a very good lunch, including vegetarian fare about 20 minutes to be ready when we arrived... Al pastor jackfruit torta...3 stars... jackfruit, beans, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado. It was spicy which I like, but the beans were paste-like and made the torta dry. Fiesta veggie burrito... 5 stars ... beans, rice, cheese, broccoli, zucchini, and cauliflower. Super good - seasoned really well and just delicious.
