While on our family vacation in OBX, the alternator in our Toyota Highlander went out. At the time, we didn't know it was the alternator until we replaced the battery and checked it at the local Auto Zone. I then googled mechanics near me. OBX Affordable Automotive Repair was one of the top shops. I read the reviews and told my husband that we should drive over. I have to say that Jeff is an impressive mechanic! He got us in, replaced the alternator in about 2 hours! He's an honest, straightforward person. We genuinely appreciate him helping us out in this situation being so far away from home. After coming back from Hatteras, we ran our SUV over a water surge on the highway and our Pathfinder made a very loud engine sound. Since we would be going home in a few days, we looked for an auto repair place convenient to us. Automotive repair shops are always a scary proposition as who know who is honest and who isn't. After checking out my trusty YELP, I came across Jeff. I called and he immediately responded. He said that he had several cars to look at but to text him about my car and situation so that he wouldn't forget about me. Several hours later (which I was fine with), he told me to come the next day at 10 am. When I arrived, Jeff immediately looked at my car and said it was my exhaust system and could need a new one. He said he did not do that but had someone around the corner who could do that. He then hopped on the dolly and looked under my car and said the exhaust must have dislodged when we went through the water puddle. He said he could weld it for us and the charge was only $70. I thought this automotive visit could easily been a big downer for our vacation but Jeff was honest and efficient and made a great experience. If you are on vacation or a native, use Jeff. Jeff is by far the fairest and most straightforward mechanic Ive ever dealt with. I had a oil coolant line develop a leak on the way down. Rocky Mount Toyota was able to patch it so I could limp to Nags Head. Jeff was able to get me into his shop ASAP and after the temporary fix failed, he got the part and fully fixed it. No up charge on the part and a very fair labor rate. If I lived closer, I'd never take my car to anyone else. Truly upstanding guy. We were on vacation when our air shocks flattened out making for a very uncomfortable ride. The owner/mechanic was just what we needed when we needed him. He took time to diagnose the system, fix a rattling muffler, and ordered and installed a replacement kit. We highly recommend this mechanic and he was affordable and straight forward. My son's car had a serious-sounding rattle coming from underneath his car on the six hour trip to the Outer Banks. Also on that ride in 90+ degree heat, the AC stopped blowing cold. They quickly diagnosed the rattle (they heard two separate ones) and told us why the AC would begin to lose its cool on such a long drive on such a hot day. I, without any reservations, recommend Jeff! Our brakes went out on our Chevy Suburban, just as we were driving into OBX from Richmond on Saturday. As an out of towner visiting the OBX, I was dismayed when I got a tire issue light on my dash. I suck at car care so I called to see if Jeff could just look over my tires and perhaps fill them for me. He was able to accommodate me within a half an hour of my phone call and quickly got the job done when we arrived. He asked for almost nothing in return for his labor, so I am writing this review in order for everyone to know that this an honest and truly affordable place to take your vehicle for repair. I can't say enough good things about this guy. My daughter's car was having issues and he got her in the next day, on a Sunday. Imagine my surprise when I asked him where we could rent a car for her when he said there was no need, that he'd have her on the road that morning! Wow. What a relief as a mom to know that we now have someone we can trust to take care of her car. She had gone to a dealer who told her they would have her car an undetermined amount of time and the bill was estimated at $4,000 and growing. We have a '96 GMC Vandura that's has been converted to propane, so we've been to our share of mechanics, and most people turn us away and won't work on it. Jeff did a very poor job communicating with us about a debilitating sensor issue on our 2015 Audi during a weekend trip to KDH. It started when he tried to verbally berate me over the phone for dropping our car off at his garage too early the Saturday morning after we called him. The tire pressure management and ABS sensors were causing it to sputter/stall in traffic so I eased it across Hwy 158 (from our house 4 blocks away) before traffic started in hopes of avoiding a tragedy. I called him Saturday to explain but was immediately challenged by him before I could utter a word of explanation - we immediately walked over to his shop. He later told us he had limited parking available spaces (unmarked) and another customer's appointment had been somehow inconvenienced. Having safely moved the car to his shop, we could have easily relocated it to a different spot or parked along the road (like countless other cars on the street) if that's what he wanted. Instead, he voluntarily assessed at the car at that time, diagnosed a sensor problem, and did a temporary electronic override/reset - all the while maintaining a helpful demeanor and explaining things. The error reoccurred very soon after we paid him and left, so we called him back as agreed. He said the replacement sensor was due in at Autozone by late Sunday or Monday morning (our departure day) and he was to call us for a 15 minute sensor replacement Monday morning. [We could even leave a our luggage in the car.] Meanwhile, we did a temporary reset inside the Audi and kept driving locally with no reoccurrence that weekend - no rental cars were available at all anywhere on the OBX. Before checking out of our rental Monday morning, we waited but got no call from Jeff. I called him to check in around 10a and offered to pick up the part for him - he seemed annoyed that I had called at all. He was then supposedly enroute to retrieve the sensor and would call us "in a few minutes" - we waited and waited but again no call. We checked out of our rental at 11a, had lunch, and waited even longer - at times on the side of the road in front of OBX AA Repair hoping for a callback at anytime. Still no call from Jeff. Facing a 5 plus hour drive home in Northern VA, we left town in hopes that our manual reset(s) would get us home without a complete breakdown. Unfortunately, the sensor issue reoccurred and even worsened and the car completely broke down a couple hours into the drive, leaving us literally stranded in a parking lot. Still Jeff's assured call never came - for the replacement sensor he was on the way to get so he could install it that morning while we waited prior to leaving town. I guess he was still miffed that, out of concern for our safety, that I dared drop our car off early Saturday morning and then did not respond apologetically to his berating demeanor and tone. He cleverly showed us, I guess, and maybe derived some degree of satisfaction from stringing us along with false assurances of assistance before not calling us back at all to provide a badly needed repair. He may be exquisitely talented in repairing cars and may offer the best pricing in town, but he left us in a terrible spot. Further, we did not appreciate his unprofessional demeanor or his inexplicably unfulfilled assurances that he would aid travelers in need. Help customers or not - he should at least stand by his word. Given the same circumstance, we would extend our stay and work with another repair shop that offered to help the following week. With other options, we'll never again offer any business to OBX AA Repair. read more

My husband and I were vacationing at the OBX when our car's dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, on a Sunday no less! When we Googled "auto repair OBX", this shop came up and was highly rated, so we took a chance. My husband called and described the issue to Jeff (the amazing mechanic/car doctor!) who told us to bring it in for a look. He spent several minutes diagnosing the issue (ended up being the electronic throttle control) and he gave us an appointment for the next morning. A part was ordered and the repair was made, all in a professional, affordable, on-time manner. I am awed by Jeff's expertise and kindness to a pair of out-of-towners who needed his help.
