On vacation. When I tried to leave front desk after checking in car would not start. I found Pugh's on google and called in desperation. They said it would be the end of the week to look at the problem. After explaining that I had to rent a car and book extra lodging for the weekend they said they would try to get to it As soon as possible. Jayson the technician stayed late one night to replace the starter. In addition to a fair price Pughs saved me hundreds of dollars In expenses had we had to stay any longer. Great folks! read more

Poor service, understanding of vehicles... seems to be dishonest or at best very poor working knowledge of cars/trucks/vans. Please, save your money and go off the island. If I could give it 0 starts I would. My cars tire was punctured and it was Friday and was due to check out the next day, I arrived right at open and said I could leave the car all day if they could just replace one tire. Pugh refused to help me out told me they were to busy and it wasn't there problem. What are we talking about...20 mins to replace one tire. Literally every tire place at the Outer Banks told me the exact same thing. It's clear these place don't care for tourists. I chose Pugh to write the review about as they were the rudest. I had to have the car towed back to Raleigh and then had to drive back to get my family/stuff. I won't step foot on the Outer Banks again. I needed my TPMS re-set while I was in town. I wasn't told how much they charged, and was shocked that it was $62.50! My local tire center does it no charge, takes about 3 minutes. 6 miles after leaving the garage, light came back on. I couldn't get back to Pugh's due to other plans. I called them 5 days later when I was home to notify the job wasn't done properly and that the charge was extreme. The manager quote was "we don't do work for free". and wasn't willing to give any discount. If you're not a local, I would stay away! read more

This place appears to have good reviews and maybe the mechanics are decent but the owner, Ray Pugh, is not very honest. I broke down on the way home from OBX with a family of five. Five quarts of oil sprayed all over the engine block and car. They "fixed" my car in less than two hours on a Saturday, and charged me for three. No harm no foul there. I just wanted to get back on the road. They called with the problem and said they could fix it and they fixed it for the quoted price. Great news. But then the owner, when ringing me up, says I might want to have the repair done by Toyota later on because his shop didn't really have the right parts to fix it. I find out later that Toyota issued a bulletin on this and would fix it for free the right way, which he knew and still charged me $200+. So I broke down a couple hours later in friggin' Fredericksburg, Va., (five more quarts of hot oil spraying all over the damn place) where I spent the weekend waiting for my car to be fixed correctly. Let me tell you about Fredericksburg, Va. It ain't the Outer Banks. I would rather he tell me I had to wait on the parts and spend two more days at the beach. Or, better yet, I needed to tow it to Toyota and have the job done for free. Who do you know who wants their car to work for another couple hours? So I call and Ray says he will refund my card "half price" because he "told me it wouldn't last long." Both lies. Then he says he sent me a check. Another lie. I give up with this guy after a few tries. Anyone who wants to take advantage of a family of tourists rolling through town for a lousy $200 needs the money more than I do. Can't do zero stars. If I could give 0 stars I would! My teenage daughters car broke down while at the beach and this was the closest place. They let her car sit on the lot for 2 days without even looking at it, so basically left her stranded when we made it clear that she had no other options. They offered her no assistance and even told her to stop calling them with questions. Absolutely awful and only care about how much money they were going to make off of us. The front desk lady had an attitude with both me and my daughter every single interaction. I have never had such a bad experience with an auto shop, AVOID IF POSSIBLE! They were excellent, and very, very nice to me. Really, they were a godsend while I was on vacation. I was run off the road while visiting Nags Head--ended up with a bunch of sand inside my hubcaps, which stay stuck to the wheel unless the nuts are removed. Even if I had had the tools with me, recent spinal surgery would have prevented me from removing them and cleaning the sand out. It's a minor thing maybe, but meant the difference between being able to drive 40mph and 70mph when I drove back to Atlanta. read more

Total brake job in May. My brakes went out on the bypass. Scary. Dropped it off on a Saturday. Got it back by 9:30 in the morning on Monday. One of the calipers was faulty. They repaired immediately and at no charge. Beth at the front desk is very nice. I would recommend them. They are one of the busiest shops on the beach. read more

I was horrified. My father was diagnosed with a heart condition and called me having a panic attack because of these places 2 side by side. At one, the lady says she is too busy and shoos him out. Next door the lady says she can't tell if he needs 2 or 4 but will find out and then get Dad a day for the tires, oil and inspection. Take care of it all at once she tells Dad. Then some man comes out and tells him he needs 4 tires, he needs to go somewhere and get some tires then maybe come back if they don't do the rest. My dad lives in Nags Head, has almost all his life but now, he does not drive far: now he is scared to death he has bad tires, his inspection will expire and he will get ticket. I came up last night from Myrtle, got my dad some tires, the oil changed and the truck inspected. On the way back to his place, he showed me where he went and both places had tires out front, one even had tires on the sign. Almost 7 hours one way to help my dad get tires because both these places shooed him away. At least one person was nice to him, he said she looked right bad not being able to help him, so Thank You to her for the small kindness. I wish I didn't have to turn around and come right home. I'd like to ask the other lady if she treated her Dad that way and the man who told him to go away, my Dad worked hard all his life, he doesn't have a lot but came to give you his business and you turned him away, couldn't be bothered with an old man and his truck. Well Dad might not be important to you but he is to a lot of folks around there and he is to me so I will tell anyone who will listen what you did to Dad. Treating folks like that, not gonna stay in business long and suits you right. read more

I called Tuesday morning to schedule a oil change, state inspection and tire rotation and they were able to take me same day if I left it with them and they completed the entire job in 3 hours. Great service and highly recommend. read more

1 star only because 0 isn't an option. This is a sham repair shop that tries to prey on vacationers who are stuck without options. I am a mechanic and had a problem with one rear brake while on vacation. I could get under the truck and see the issue was just a sticking pad on one side. (likely from sand on the beach). Unfortunately though, begin on vacation i had no tools or means to work on the truck so i drove to Pugh's. Pugh's told me that they can get it done that day but it needs 2 new calipers on the back. I explained that the caliper wasn't the problem it was just the pad stuck on the slide and asked why it would have needed 2 anyway. The VERY RUDE employee stated that they only do them in pairs and they would only fix my truck if they could do both calipers, rotors, and pads. A job that would have been north of $1500 on my 3500 dually. When I pushed back that he was being absurd the response i got was "we will do everything on both sides or you can find someone else" stated as he walked away. frustrated and just plain shocked at how much of a crook this guy was i drove 2 mins up the road to Meineke and they fixed the truck for me in 20 mins for $59. NO PARTS, just clean-up. These types of places are what give my trade a bad name... do yourself a favor and save yourself money... just drive 2 mins down to Meineke. They are polite and legitimately trying to get you back on the road not prey on your vulnerable position. read more

Do NOT GO HERE!!!!! I got my car towed here and they will screw you over thinking you don't know anything... I needed a fuel pump replace which on my car is super easy right under back seat well he tried to charge me $900 which it by the books is 2 hours of labor and the part is only $250...so he was trying to double charge me for literally a 45 min job... every single place around here I called and they said that's absurd its a 2 hour by the book job and no more then $200. I then payed a tow truck to get off there property and Ray told him he couldn't take it I owe a payment.... a payment for what? It took the dude 15 mins to determine what it was and he said I owe him $145 which is absolutely ridiculous and on top the dude is a asshole. Absolutely the worst customer service I've ever experienced!!!!! On vacation and a part on my Suburban broke on the beach. I found the part, which apparently was the only one in OBX, and as a courtesy I went and pick it up. Now this is a small plastic piece not an alternator, they say it's shop policy to not use customer parts. So I explain the situation and how bad a day this was only for the front desk lady to get very ugly and then get the owner. Then he is the same way. Do not use this shop!!!!! This place is absolutely ridiculous. I was 2 hrs from home with my 3yr old daughter and had a very bad tire leak. After taking 5 lug nuts off I realized the previous shop that did my state inspection 2 months prior rounded off the tip of 1 lug nut so factory tire iron would not work. I asked them about borrowing a deep well socket to break it loose or paying them to do it after explaining the situation. They wouldn't help at all. Would not even look at it to make suggestions at all while my tire goes flat. Very rude and not helpful at all. So I keep filling with air and riding on rim to get to treadquaters miles away. There I had a totally different experience with an actual helpful shop who got it off in a few seconds so the spare could go on even though it was closing time at that point. read more

While on vacation, my car battery died. I called Onstar and they sent Pugh's out to meet me for a jump. They told me it would be 45 minutes before arrival and it was only 5 - 10 minutes. We opted to have the car towed into the shop since the battery was bad and to test the alternator. We told them there was no rush but they had it all taken care of within a few hours. I decided to have them look the ailing vehicle over, and to let us know what needed to be done. They were honest with me, made recommendations, and charged me fairly. No one far from home could ask for anything more. If that weren't enough, they were always accessible, professional and courteous. I had issues with my van while traveling back from Avon to Pennsylvania. I stopped at Pugh's with my two young sons. It was 11:30am on a Saturday and they closed at noon. They were able to diagnose and fix it within an hour - even staying late to fix it. The price was very reasonable. read more

I was from out of state, and needed a tire balanced. He was too busy and could not get to a 5 minute job. When I went to get in my car to find another place my tumblers on my ignition messed up and could not start my car. I called my girlfriends son to bring the spare key and it would not work either. He works on cars so he began to tear it apart. He got it to start after about 20 minutes but as I backed it out the steering wheel locked. About that time the main guy at the counter came out ranting and raving that we could not work on my car there and had to go. I asked for 10 minutes. 10 minutes was up and here he comes again threatening to tow me so I called AAA and they towed me back to our beach house. In about 10 more minutes he had the steering unlocked too. Instead of this business asking if we needed any help he was rude and crude, I'll never go back to that shop again. read more

I'm with a host of others who have written similar reviews and I am not one to speak highly or recommend this place to anyone. RIP OFF doesn't scratch the service. I picked up a nail in my tire about an inch and a half in from the side wall. I took the tire to Pugh's to be told my tire could not be patched because the nail was too close to the side wall. Then they told me they had to special order the replacement tire at a cost of $335. None of this sat right with me so I returned to pick up my car and it's wheel and drove it to another auto repair center. 3 auto technicians walked out to my car to take a look and all 3 said almost in stereo that the tire could be patched. (and they all ascertained this after approximately 3 seconds of looking at where the nail was.) Pugh's wanted to sell me a new tire for $335... but their competition quoted me the exact same tire for $260. In my opinion these numbers are not even in the same ball park. I don't wish Pugh's any ill will but I sure do wish them a healthy does of both "what comes around, goes around" AND "May you reap what you sow." Thanks for nothing.... We've been coming to the Outer Banks for over 15 years now and have used Pughs Car Care numerous times. After reading the poor reviews of two other people, I wanted to set the record straight. Ray & his staff have always gone overboard to help us, even during the busy summer season. I've always received fast service and fair prices. I've been amazed when sitting in their waiting room and listening to other tourist complain about everything they have done while on vacation. Being a retired service writer for a GM dealship, there are some people in this world you just can't make happy, no matter how hard you try. read more

These guy's know what there doing! My vehicle took a lightening hit so I wasn't sure all what was wrong with it when I took it in. Steve diagnosed the problem correctly and replaced only what needed to be replaced. The car is now running great, just the way it was before it took the hit.
