The people who work here are really great people and I'm not surprised by the amount of great reviews they have. My almost brand new Sony camera wasn't turning on. I took it to Best Buy (original merchant) and they were so unhelpful and didn't even look at the camera. Then I called Sony and they wanted me to send it in for repair, where I'd be without it for weeks. In the interest of time, I took my camera in so that I can use my camera for work and vacation, expecting to pay to fix it. The employee there helped me out, charged it for a bit, and gave me the model number for an external charger I should order to use on my camera. Such a simple, kind fix made me feel like someone finally cared to even just take a look at the camera instead of brushing me off to another 800 number. My new favorite Mom & Pop camera shop. It's a little out of the way ...Okay, a LOT out of the way .. when compared to Samy's or Calumet but you know what, given a choice, I'd still go to OC Camera as my first option, here's why. 1) They have a great selection of things you'd actually want or need without overwhelming you with useless junk. 2) You can tell that the main guys that work there really know their stuff, are passionate about photography and most importantly: are ready and will gladly work with you to figure out what will work best 3) The prices are fair - the items I looked at (Manfrotto Ball head, Black rapid strap, etc etc) had prices comparable to the lowest prices I could find online, hey, for a brick & mortar store, those are damned good prices (especially when compared to Samy's) 4) They also have great prices and a great selection of used camera gear (Leica, Nikon, Hasselblad, medium, large format, etc at Prices comparable to what you'd find on Craig's List - hot damn! No more having to meet sketchy people at starbucks!) Overall, my first visit to OC Camera was such a positive experience that I was compelled to break my 3 month Yelp oath of silence - it was that good. read more

Absolutely turned off by this company. Just went in to see about renting lenses for my daughter (they don't rent them) however the staff there is completely uninterested in selling anything. Not one person tried to ask what we were looking for, nor did they seem to take any interest into a possible sell. Note to shop owner as of this date I have spent approximately 10-11k on different cameras my 19 year old daughter has thought she wanted. I am that client that probably would have purchased lenses if your staff would have taken some kind of interest in us being in the store. Was looking for a tripod and the closest camera / photographic supply store was OC Camera. Prices were about the same as I had seen elsewhere so wasn't too concerned when first looking around. Selected a unit, went to the counter, and downhill it went from there......\ Owner: "Let's see, that one is a floor model. I have this in stock..." goes back in stock room, comes out with a box, points at it. "You ready? This is new!" Me: "Sure". (thinking: sure hope it's new....) Owner: "Name, address, e-mail, phone number...." Me: "Uh, I don't want to be on any mailing list and would prefer not to provide this data". Owner: "You have to. It's for the warranty". Me: (thinking - it's a tripod, what kind or waranty needs that level of data). "Ok, but do you have an "opt-out" of any mailings or e-mail? It's a requirement to have this option provided today" Owner: "Don't worry, I don't mail and I haven't sent an e-mail in 6 years". Me:: "Understood, but let's make get the purchase completed without all of the personal data please". Owner: FINE! (grabbing the tripod, and roughly shoving it to a co-worker) you can buy it, but there won't be any warranty. So to make a long review shorter, I drive up to Sammy's, pay the exact same price as OC Camera, and give them only the $$$ to buy. No name, no rank, no e-mail address, no phone number. Manufacturers Warranty, my foot. Moral of the story - if you want a wider selection, friendlier help, and don't want 20 questions, drive 15 miles north to Costa Mesa and buy from Sammy's.. read more

I'm a professional photographer here in Orange County. Sometimes I have very well kept gear I want to sell. I once spoke with them about selling my Fuji GX680 II. A beast of a medium format rig. Rare and very much in demand. This was a mint rig. Two fantastic lenses, battery pack, a 120 and Polaroid back and the Angle Finder. Flawless kit. They offered me a whopping 300 bucks. (The angle finder alone is worth that much) It was shocking. I mean I know they gotta make a few bucks, but this rig for the body alone is 750 at minimum. Sold it on eBay for $1675. This single experience changed how thought of them as a local vendor and gave me a real idea of the way they do business. I will absolutely never spend a dime here, which is sad because i want to support local merchants, but not when they are so blatant with the dismissive greed. I'm not a dummy. I knew what I was selling and was willing to be reasonable, not idiotic. They definitely stepped over a dollar to try and pick up a dime. I now make the drive to Sammys or I use tried and true vendors online. They really should think of people who walk in as clients- not ATMs and focus more on being a good local source and friendly place to shop. Instead they treat, in my experience and that of a few other shooters I know, like inconvenient pests bothering them while they talk on the phone. I simply DO NOT recommend them. read more

I can't thank the guys at OC Camera enough. I was devastated when my Nikon D5100 fell from the bed while on our honeymoon in Hawaii and stopped working. As soon as we returned home we tried to go through the Nikon customer service and found them to be utterly useless. Based on the reviews I saw on Yelp, we decided to go to OC Camera just to see if they can let us know how bad the damage is. They greeted us upon entering the shop and while I thought my camera was just being looked over, Roozbeh handed it back to me all fixed!!! I can't thank them enough for what they did for me. I always know the customer service is quality when a place goes all "Miracle on 34th Street" and suggests I go to another store. Not like, "Dude, go away and go to whatever" and not like the annoying State Farm commercials: "Don't ask us; go to the other guys first and then come back." But like, "You know, we don't have it...we could order it, but then it would be more expensive than if you went to such-and-such." But the problem is those places don't have the actual customer service of OC Camera. Which is why I go back to THIS place every time. They have always had repair/cleaning work done ahead of estimates. They have always done impeccable work and definitely know their stuff. If you have a camera, or even just have a camera question, or have HEARD of cameras, head there. They're all good people there, but Cailean (pronounced "Collin") is incredible. For example, it had been about 6 months since I had last been there. I walked in to drop off my camera for a cleaning and as he was writing up the receipt/return tag, he just input my entire name on the paper. WHAT? It's not like my last name is "Smith" or that I'd been in there recently...or that much at all, actually. _I_ can't remember how to spell my name that well. These guys clearly get that they're there to be our camera store...not just there for today's revenue. That works out well because I'm entirely content to make them my camera store. read more

I have been a professional photographer for years, and for fun, I make it a point to stop in at local stores when I am traveling or working out of town, just to check them out. I discovered OC Camera like this, and I am so happy that I did. Every experience I have ever had with these guys has been better than the last, and they started out amazing to begin with. Not only are they the best place to go when it comes to selling or trading in your gear, but they work hard to find you deals on new gear, hard to find items, you name it. I love this place and the people who run it so much that I drive 2 hours to shop there even though I have a cluster of very large camera stores within 20 minutes of me. Not only has the shopping experience been great, but these guys are a genuinely great group of people, and we have shared a ton of laughs and a lot of great stories over the years. I would have any and all of them over to my home for dinner with my family any day of the week. I am really happy that they are only 2 hours from me as I can handle that trek. Took my mom's Canon AE-1P in to be cleaned up after it'd been sitting in her camera bag for 30 years. I'd called Canon and the shop they'd recommended, only to be told that they wouldn't service a camera that old. Called these guys and it was told "no problem"! Dropped it off in the afternoon and was able to pick it up the next day. The shutter sounded 100% better and it was all cleaned up. I had been looking for a certain telephoto lens for my camera and was wanting to buy that lens for my existing camera from OC Camera. I never received poorer customer service. I was shocked at the lack of courtesy. Upon entering, I was ignored for at least two minutes while the salesman was looking up something on the computer. I brought in a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1 lens that stopped focusing. The gentleman at the counter was cordial and collected the necessary information. He then gave me a receipt verifying that the lens was in his possession and that he would send it off to his repair guys. Approximately a week later I was contacted by OC Camera and informed of the price of the repair. I approved the repair on the spot. Two weeks later I received a call that the lens was ready to be picked up! Upon testing the lens, it focused beautifully and I couldn't be happier! The guys at OC Camera were straight up. The quoted price was the exact price that I paid. I highly recommend them for your Photography needs. I was so pleased that I left my 24-70 2.8 with them for service as well. I walked in interested in a film camera, there were two men behind the counter and although they did help me they treated me like I was completely dumb. I admit that I'm not the most educated with camera and camera equipment, but, I still felt like they were rude to me due to my lack of knowledge. They have a very condescending way of giving customer service which made me feel very intimidated and also embarrassed. No one should have to feel embarrassed after asking for advice to better their knowledge. They tried to convinced me to stick with digital and pretty much said to not waste my time. I doubt someone who has a passion for photography would say something like that. Needless to say their customer service has convinced me never to go back. Buyer Beware... Since Ebay protects their sellers, this is the next best thing. Buyer beware...if you seek a refund from them make sure you carefully review the final amount. I tried to explain simple math to them but for some reason they still felt compelled to deduct the shipping charges twice. I understand once but twice is not right. I understand everything else to do with the return but deducting the shipping charges twice is just deception. Just want to make sure people carefully review any refunded amounts in the future. Below is an exchange with the infamous Roozbeh...1+1=5 for him. Roozbeh: This gentleman purchased a lens from us on E-Bay and chose the option to have it overnighted. He returned the lens becasue he "didn't like it." On all of our E-Bay listings it is noted that we charge a restocking fee, so that buyer's do not buy items from us just to test out and ship back at our expense, which is a common issue on E-Bay. Upon receiving the lens back we deducted 15% as a restocking fee and did not refund the overnight shipping fees due to the reason for the return. Due to this, this gentleman believes that we deducted his shipping fees twice, which is completely false. We did not deduct shipping charges twice, we charge a 15% restocking fee and did not refund his shipping fees. JW: I will put the info here for others to see what they might come across if they also need a refund. Initial Transaction Lens cost- $381 Shipping cost-$68 Total cost = $449 Refund Transaction Total cost of original transaction = $449 Subtracted shipping for $68 Lens cost- $381 15% restocking fee- $57 Subtotal- $324--- Should have been refund They subtracted ANOTHER Shipping cost-$68 Total refund given--$ 256. As you can see, there was a total of $193 in deductions applied on the refund, the 15% restocking fee $57 (which I fully understand) however the remaining $136 is twice the amount of my original shipping charges of $68. They can (not sure how) say they did not "double dip" on the shipping deductions but the above shows the facts. I am sure this is a good store overall, I am just making people aware of what could happen if you don't review all refunds given. read more

I was in search of a relatively rare Nikon lens, that is always back-ordered. After dealing with Samy's shenanigans about how they could get the lens, but that they recommended that I look into another lens(that they just so happened to have in stock) that was not the one I wanted, I called these guys and they made it very simple and easy. I traded in a current lens I didn't use as often and used that as store credit towards the new lens. I waited roughly 5 weeks for the lens; calling once a week just to check up. Finally they called me to let me know it would arrive the next day, and once I picked it up they were very cool about my annoyance regarding the status of the lens.
