    Foggy morning in Occidental.
    Alex E.

Amazing little motel in the woods! The Occidental Lodge is one of our favorite North Bay escapes. Located in a tiny little town that is extremely sleepy on weekdays, this lodge is perfect for a quiet getaway. The weather is always significantly warmer than the surrounding coastal towns & the outdoor pool is a wonderful amenity on a hot day. The price point is perfect for the comfortable & clean rooms. We appreciate the top notch service from Ryder at the front desk. He has been incredibly friendly & helpful over the years. On our first few visits the fountain was running, but it has been turned off the last couple years, which is quite disappointing. Regardless of this small complaint we are looking forward to our next visit!

This was our second time here and loved it again. The room was decorated with cute art and photos. Most importantly, the bed was comfortable. The table was small, but I was able to get some work done. Unfortunately, it was a work trip. The owner or manager was engaging and meant for customer service. I remembered him from two years ago and he has the same great attitude. The location is perfect for exploring the couple blocks full of shops and restaurants.

First time here and I'm very happy that we chose to come here. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The room is clean, tidy and very cute. The price is very reasonable for a small cute town. If you ever come down to occidental, check out thier farmers market place on Thursday. They have live music and dance also some fun activities for kiddos.

Howard's for breakfast and lunch. Vegan too!

Our 1 night stay on a Sunday night was outstanding. Room 120 overlooking the pool was updated and the best Cal King I've ever slept in. No back pain in the morning!! Very quiet and peaceful In a beautiful location the views and fresh air were welcomed. Barton, who checked us in, was the most pleasant person I have ever dealt with in a lodge/motel situation. He was very accommodating!! Go up on a Thursday to a Sunday to enjoy open restaurants and shops. Highly recommend an updated room.

I had a lovely one night stay. Occidental is the cutest little town with some gorgeous restored historical buildings. It's very quaint and quiet. The lodge is my type of spot. Family owned older motel/motor lodge. Big room, very clean, quiet. Comfortable bed. Good price point. Kind staff. If you need a newer or boutique hotel/motel this is not for you. It's simple and has the basics. I like it. I was in one of the rooms that hasn't been updated. I think the other building has the more modern updated boutique rooms. Mine was just standard. I don't care it was great for me.

Affordable, surrounded by trees, beautiful view. Rider was the most pleasant, exceptional host/concierge with vast knowledge of the town & recommendations for local sites & restaurants. The only downside was cleanliness of the room, an old used soap was in the shower and a couple clumps of dog hair.

Each of the Guesthouses is impeccably decorated, cozy, and welcoming. From the beautiful redwood grove at The Trees to the incredible outdoor dining table at The Hills. Each house is uniquely dreamy, nestled in the picturesque town of Occidental. Barbara is truly the most wonderful, kind, and welcoming host. She attended to every single detail to ensure that our wedding day was perfect (even down to wiping off benches after the beautiful morning mist cleared). She is a dear friend and really makes every visit extraordinary. We know we will continue visiting for years to come. While you stay in Occidental, you MUST get food from the Union Hotel. Between visits, my husband and I dream about Garlic Gold pizza, carrot cake, and the best minestrone around. The pizza crust is to die for- fluffy and just the right balance of perfectly browned. The slice of carrot cake is literally larger than my hand and maybe even forearm! Super rich and velvety cream cheese frosting- amazing! We have visited Occidental once during COVID and the Union has an excellent picnic style menu. The food is ordered outside and nicely packaged for take-out or eating at a table in their distanced outdoor area. As someone who has strictly adhered to distancing and other protocols, I felt safe and comfortable! Highest praise for the Occidental Guesthouses and Union Hotel! A must visit for anyone who loves cozy accommodations, excellent food, and the most welcoming environment.

Food was so-so, indoor hot tub didn't work properly and was running most of the night. Overall, it wasn't a good experience for the hefty price tag we payed. Update: The owner of Avalon, Hilary, has contacted me a couple of days ago, expressing sincere concern about our disappointing stay at her B&B back in April 2007. It is a good sign that she is taking reviews and opinions about her business serious, as every competent business owner should. I attribute the somewhat mediocre experience to her absence and I am sure that our experience would have been different if the family would not have been out of town during our visit. I have to echo the two other posters in regards to the rooms and surroundings of the Avalon Bed & Breakfast. The room we stayed in was in impeccable condition, the picturesque surroundings and tranquility we got to enjoy on the patio were perfect, except for the above mentioned problems. That's the sole reason I can't give it 5 stars. However, Hilary has since offered us a free night at her establishment, which is a nice way of trying to remedy our experience. It shows she truly does care about her guests and patrons and we might take her up on her offer.

The service was awesome, our server Evan quickly got us to our seats and took our orders. We tried the oyster epiphany (fresh oyster with lime ginger and wasabi dressing) I wasn't a big fan of oysters due to its fishy after taste. But this place nailed it! The sauce really paired well, oysters were soo fresh I could go for another round. We also ordered homemade sourdough as starters, the whipped butter was very light , not too overwhelming. The sourdough was soft and the poppy seeds add texture to it. The pairing works so well, we asked for another refill. Now to the main course, the fish tacos were on point, not very memorable to be honest. But the pasta!!! omg you could tell it was hand made, the shrimp were fresh and cleaned it wasn't fishy at all. I was expecting it to be a tomato based pasta, but the sun dried tomato gave such a nice additional profile, sweet and sourness to the truffle based pasta sauce. Last but not least, let's talk about the view! It is not everyday you got to see the end of the river and the start of Pacific Ocean. it was such a stunning view. Overall it is a 5/5 experience!

Wish I had known a couple of details before planning my anniversary dinner here…read more This place is known for epic views, naturally we wanted a table with a view so I called a week in advance to request just that. The woman I spoke to said she would put it in her notes and that specific tables are not able to be held. She assured me we would have a good spot so I took her word for it. This was our first time coming here and its an hour drive. There is very minimal parking. We were lucky to get a spot as someone was leaving. We were seated at the worst table this place has to offer, right at the entrance to the bar and kitchen, in a narrow walkway, there is a window for one person to look out of and the other seat is looking into the kitchen as the table is positioned halfway in the middle of a window, so one side is against a wall and a view of the kitchen. The busy waitstaff was coming in and out quickly from both areas and walking past us with plates and such, it was chaotic at best. It felt almost insulting to be seated here as we had made a request well in advance to celebrate our anniversary which was also not acknowledged. Another party was just leaving so I was able to request to move. We were then seated at a 2 top table just outside of the atrium with a direct view thru a window of another 2 top table on the other side of the glass so when you go to look out the window its like you are staring at the people at the table thru the glass partition. We were so deflated by this whole seating situation. I say all of this to point out that if you are a party of 2 there is barely any tables with a clear view for both people so keep that in mind! If you have a party of 4-6 you have a much better chance of a better table. Really wish I had known that!!! The interior was nice enough but lacking the romance and ambiance I had hoped for, can we get some candles or flowers on the tables? Seems like an obvious detail overlooked. As far as the menu we were a bit underwhelmed by the offerings, there is a prefix menu and a small menu adjacent with minimal options like lamb and elk or vegetarian.... Probly should have looked at that before making this reservation but I had heard how amazing it was so I just took a chance. Although the choices were limited we enjoyed everything we ordered, food and drinks. Our waitress was nice and did a good job for us overall but definitely was more attentive and informative to the group adjacent to us which was a bit disappointing. Again this was a celebratory dinner and it just fell short for us in that way as it was not acknowledged Our tab was a little over 300$ portions were modest although tasty. I enjoyed the drinks and desert the most. To sum it up, I wont be going out of my way again to come back here. If I found myself in the area I might enjoy stopping in for a drink and dessert. Id say a solid 2.5 stars

Pros: this was a very charming estate and the staff was beyond kind to both of us and our pup. He was welcome everywhere except the dining room, the pool and spa. The room was very cute and clean. The only downside for me and my allergies is that there is wood fireplace in each room. The bathroom had plenty of hot water. The breakfast was from 8-10 am in the dining room and had a decent meat-less spread. Toast, bagels, oatmeal and toppings, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, fruit salad, coffee, tea assortment and juices. The grounds are super cute and weather permitting there is a movie playing on a projector with complimentary s'mores to cook on the outdoor wood fire. Since we had our dog, we didn't use the pool or spa. "Aunt Kay" we interacted with the most and was so kind to both of us and Dio. She made our stay! Not only was she informative but also checked in on us when we we'd pass through the lobby. Dio was a big fan of her. Cons: if you have allergies or are sensitive to wood smoke, this is not your destination. Again, there are wood burning fireplaces in each room and a large fire pit by the movie. The room we stayed at is across from the pool and it can get noisy. You can also hear everyone that walks in front of your room. Along with that there is a lot of wildlife, so you may need ear plugs. If you need to sleep in the dark, the front blinds are going to still let in light, so bring a sleep mask. Update: we got a text that I forgot my socks in the room. They offered to mail them to us, we declined. I don't remember the last time house keeping and the front office too the time to be that considerate.
