Great location and recently renovated. A few hiccups in the rooms but overall a comfortable place to land when visiting the area. Our first room was a king bed. The vanity is large with room for your toiletries on the counter but didn't have a towel rod for the hand towels. In addition, we had to ask the front desk for a hairdryer. Bed was very firm.. a little too much for my comfort. Upon returning to our room the next day we smelled gas so they kindly moved us to another room and shut off the heater. Our second room was a two room suite with a kitchen area that had a full size coffee maker and microwave and small dining table. No other kitchen equipment.. paper towels etc. this bathroom was small without any counter space for toiletries to be stowed except under the sink. Interestingly, the bathroom vanity drawer could not be fully pulled out as it hit the doorframe. The "living area included a coffee table, "sofa that could squeeze three people in and a bench. Very sparse. I'd still return here as you can walk to all amenities in town within a couple minutes. read more

We stayed 12/20/25 in a deluxe queen room. The room is not large enough for two queen beds and have occupants be able to get out of one of them on both sides. There were two chairs in the room that didn't quite fit. The room looks as if it may have been recently remodeled but they forgot to decorate it, so they threw a couple of sadly outdated prints up and a horrible image of a sheep's face against a wallpaper print wall. The heater needs work because it makes a noise resembling concrete being swept- all night long. The room had no visible power outlets near beds, where we expected to be able to recharge phones and multiple devices. In order to turn on the lamp between the two beds you need get down on the floor under the desk to find the switch, which was plugged into an extension cord under the desk. The room needs at least one reachable outlet per wall outside of the bathroom countertop which is too wet to act as a charging area. An outlet with four plugs needs to be installed between the beds at top-of-desk level. The bedside lamps are ancient and need replacing. We were very disappointed and found the room unacceptable. FAMILIES STAY AWAY!! Had a fairly pleasant experience night one, but new guests checked in to the room next us night two and completely ruined our experience. They spent the entire time smoking weed inside their room and outside their room in front of their/our door. The smoke drifted directly into our room. It was brutal. The hotel has signs posted everywhere about not smoking in rooms and that guests should move 25 feet away outside. My wife and I were traveling with our 9 year old and were really frustrated they couldn't walk from their room a bit and smoke. I don't care if people wanna smoke, you do you, but show some respect for the rules and for other guests, especially children, around smoking. I asked them very politely to move elsewhere and they acknowledged we had a kid with us (they themselves had kids but not with them) and that they would stop. I then informed the front desk worker and he said he smelled it and people are not allowed to smoke in their rooms or in the corridor and to let them know if they kept doing it. He was nice but they were already breaking the rules so some intervention or enforcement of the rules would have been nice. They continued smoking again early the next morning, so we decided to just pack up and leave. I informed a different front desk worker of the situation as we checked out and he also acknowledged he smelled it and they're not supposed to smoke and they should be more considerate of other guests. I let him know it ruined our stay and we wouldn't return, but still didn't really do anything about it. Guessing this happens a lot and the staff has given up on trying to enforce anything or just don't want to. The staff was friendly, but it was clear they weren't gonna doing anything about it. This is a roadside motel and very serviceable for people looking for a cheap stay, but if you're traveling with children, or don't want your room hot-boxed, DON'T STAY HERE as there's plenty of nicer options. read more

Amazing little motel in the woods! The Occidental Lodge is one of our favorite North Bay escapes. Located in a tiny little town that is extremely sleepy on weekdays, this lodge is perfect for a quiet getaway. The weather is always significantly warmer than the surrounding coastal towns & the outdoor pool is a wonderful amenity on a hot day. The price point is perfect for the comfortable & clean rooms. We appreciate the top notch service from Ryder at the front desk. He has been incredibly friendly & helpful over the years. On our first few visits the fountain was running, but it has been turned off the last couple years, which is quite disappointing. Regardless of this small complaint we are looking forward to our next visit! read more

This was our second time here and loved it again. The room was decorated with cute art and photos. Most importantly, the bed was comfortable. The table was small, but I was able to get some work done. Unfortunately, it was a work trip. The owner or manager was engaging and meant for customer service. We recently stayed here and overall the experience was mixed. On the positive side, the pool was great and the shower pressure was excellent. Two things we really enjoyed. From looking at the room and the hotel overall, everything seemed clean at first glance. Unfortunately, after showering one evening, we noticed a bug on the towels. My partner killed it, and since we're used to the idea that bugs can pop up depending on the location, we brushed it off. But the next day, while getting ready to head out, we spotted another one on the wall. With a closer look, we realized it was a cockroach EWWW. It was unsettling to see them on back-to-back days, and it really overshadowed the positives. The place gives the appearance of being clean, but the presence of roaches tells a different story. Cleanliness and upkeep are critical to feeling comfortable. read more

Our 1 night stay on a Sunday night was outstanding. Room 120 overlooking the pool was updated and the best Cal King I've ever slept in. No back pain in the morning!! Very quiet and peaceful In a beautiful location the views and fresh air were welcomed. Barton, who checked us in, was the most pleasant person I have ever dealt with in a lodge/motel situation. Overall this hotel was great for the price. Its beautiful interior was freshly updated, the rooms were clean and the Tvs even had the option to connect our personal streaming services! Awesome for my kiddo that loves Disney. Check out time was 11/11:30 which was nice! They also have a small smoking area in the corner of the parking lot, due to all the rooms being non smoking which I enjoyed because nothing is worse than stale smoke in a hotel room. Downsides: our room had no phone, yet the welcome card stated which numbers to call the front desk. Welcome card did not include WiFi password and I had work to do, but we came late so I couldn't ask the front desk attendant. He was there very late though, and I had great service in my phone so using my hotspot wasn't an issue. The windows are older so we could definitely hear everyone outside. The bed wasn't the most comfortable due to the hardness of the frame underneath I'm sure, but the pillows were nice and the blankets kept us warm. Also the linen truck came around 6 am and was beeping very loudly backing up into the parking lot which made restful sleeping in not so great. But I only docked one star because the front desk attendants were both amazing, kind, and super helpful! Over all I'd come again and ask for a room by the pool so it's more secluded. read more

I had a lovely one night stay. Occidental is the cutest little town with some gorgeous restored historical buildings. It's very quaint and quiet. The lodge is my type of spot. Family owned older motel/motor lodge. Big room, very clean, quiet. Comfortable bed. Good price point. Kind staff. If you need a newer or boutique hotel/motel this is not for you. It's simple and has the basics. I like it. I was in one of the rooms that hasn't been updated. I think the other building has the more modern updated boutique rooms. Mine was just standard. I stayed here again for a single evening last week as part of a professional group retreat. Downtown Occidental is across the street, which made our dinner (Hazel) and breakfast (Howard Station) choices both easy and enjoyable. Also within easy walking distance is a great hardware store a block away, a few grocery stores, and some interesting art boutiques. The Hotel itself is a little bit of a throwback, think 1970s motor lodge. Since the last time, I had a different room on the other side of the hotel which reminded me of the first time. Like before, the somewhat basic room was a little dark, yet clean, comfortable, quiet, and restful. The Occidental Hotel would make an ideal HQ for a fun weekend in Western Sonoma. Observation 1 - I stayed her on a Thursday night, with a No Vacancy Sign. Yet, by my estimation the place was only half full at best. Maybe the Friday/Saturday weekend nights are busier? Observation 2 - The Occidental Lodge has a pool, which I did not try. They also appear to have a "house cat", of which I always enjoy. read more

I am completely dissatisfied and unimpressed with my stay here. The "superior king" room that I was given (Room 184) looked NOTHING like the photos online. The only TV was a tiny little one in the "living room" that was more like the waiting room of an oil change shop. The furniture was literally staging furniture used for model homes and was horribly uncomfortable. The walls were paper thin and the entire unit looked like it was an afterthought that was squeezed in between two normal sized units to maximize profits. I peeked at the king room directly nextdoor and it was a normal sized King hotel room, but mine was tiny and uncomfortable with NO TV in front of the bed, yet I paid the same price as the "normal" rooms. To top it off, the next morning I almost got in a fight with a druggie who was blasting his shitty music from his car parked right outside my room. Total bait and switch. 4 stars only because price wise, it beat out all the other local hotels/motels/B&Bs and Airbnbs/vacation rentals for a one night stay for October. We stayed there this past Saturday for $208 a night with taxes and fees. That was the cheapest rate in the surrounding area, including Bodega and Petaluma where rates were $300-$500. Do not mistake the Occidental INN (B&B) for the Occidental LODGE, which we did upon arrival into town, where prices start around $260 and go up to $500 for a one night stay compared to the LODGE. Lodge is exactly as pictured on their site. It's very basic but for our sleeping needs, accommodations were just fine and most important, clean. The Lodge is within walking distance to the whole town which is about 20 buildings that span about 2 city blocks. Our room came with: King bed - very comfortable Wi-Fi Cable Microwave Mini fridge with freezer Hair dryer AC/heater Plenty of parking in lot Clean bath/shower Pool area was closed for the season. Front desk staff were very friendly. Check in and out was seamless. read more

We stayed here during a very cold spell in February. We had a late flight, so I phoned ahead the day prior to let the hotel know that we would be arriving quite late, and the person I spoke with let me know what room we would have and where he would hide the key for us. When we arrived, the room was ice cold. While I don't expect a hotel room to be warmed exactly to my personal liking, it seems that most hotels usually try to keep rooms at a reasonably comfortable temperature--say, 65 degrees or so--so that guests can easily warm the room the rest of the way upon arrival. But not this hotel. I would guess that the room temperature when we arrived was around 50 degrees, and felt like it hadn't been heated in months. When we turned on the heat to warm the room, the heater was loud and rattling and basically just blew barely warm air around all night. We actually had to sleep in our jackets, long pants and wool socks! When my husband called to complain the next day, he was told that their room heaters are never turned on by the management, with the excuse given that "sometimes people don't show up." Well, we had pre-paid for this room, and the cancellation deadline had passed, so it shouldn't have mattered to the management whether we showed up or not--to my mind, we had paid plenty to expect a reasonably comfortable room. Their compromise was to refund us $40, which was something, at least. But I would definitely never consider staying at this hotel again. read more

My husband was working on a big traffic signal build in Jenner, its several hours away from home, so we decided to take a little staycation and book a room near enough to him so he would have a several hour commute. We came across this little town called Occidental, and booked a room at the Occidental lodge. I am sure glad we did! The rooms were decorated so cute, we got a room that had a vintage vinyl player, mismatched chairs and antique furniture. The beds were super comfortable, it was just a great place to stay all around. Zero complaints, the price was great, check in and out was a breeze. This lodge is nestled in the cutest little town ever. People are very welcoming, very diverse population. There is a really great ziplining place near by as well. Take some time to explore something new and check this place out! read more

I don't live too far ( 65 miles away ) and enjoy Bodega Bay and the Russian River. My husband and I had the pleasure of staying here this past weekend. We had a Superior King sized room. The room was clean and comfortable. The Staff was amazing. There was a small plumbing issue with our room and the staff quickly addressed it by moving us to a beautiful 2 bedroom suite for our second night. The hotel is right on the main strip of the town of Occidental. You can walk to the shops, bars & restaurants. The hotel staff are very pleasant & helpful. The rooms are clean & recently remodeled! No more orange sinks. The hotel is dog friendly. The pool looks fun, but too cold outside for us. We had an upgraded king room which was great (no wall to wall carpets to aggravate allergies). The people staying at the hotel are friendly & not creepy scary types. read more

The rooms are ok but nothing special. My room had a huge ant problem, not to mention I had no hot water and poor water pressure. And I do have to say the owner whom I believe is a little old lady is very very rude. I complained about the ants and I heard her say something along the lines of " well there wasnt ants in there yesterday so she must have brought them in" and then later that day I heard her belittling one of the employees. Just knowing how the owner is, I highly doubt I will ever go back to the Occidental Lodge. I dont support businesses who treat their employees so poorly. I hope that employee finds a better job with a better boss. read more

The photos of this lodge online are nothing like the actual rooms. I understand taking nicer photos to get business, but this is incredibly misleading to potential customers. This is a motel. I felt very unsafe in this area, and it has no cell phone service or wifi, so you cannot contact anyone while you're here. Was not able to call my room to get ahold of my family after a certain time. There was no access to water, only soda. Heard the people above us all night and morning. The staff is friendly and helpful which was a positive. It's fine if you just need a place to sleep for the night, but this establishment is trying to present itself online as something that it is not. I was very disappointed. read more

Family reunion weekend in Bodega; cousins' families got rentals at the country club, I got a room for two nights at Occidental Lodge, far enough inland to miss the blast of wind roaring off the ocean. Guest services made an adjustment so I could have a downstairs room (I'm 70+) which I appreciated. Enjoyed visits and dinner with the family, then headed back to the Lodge - weather was chilly but room was beautifully warm, very clean, and had all the amenities I could want: walk-in shower, coffee maker, microwave, TV. King size bed was so comfy, with a very cozy comforter and plenty of good pillows. I don't sleep that well at home! Quiet environs, easy access, would gladly visit again. Another selling point: Howards Station cafe across the street - I enjoy a nice breakfast and they deliver! Please see separate review. read more

Occidental Hotel did not meet our expectations. The photos shared of the room and amenities did not match the room we were put in. Room was very old and run down. Not like the newly remodeled rooms shown in the photos. We had booked three nights but decided to check out after our first night because of this lack of value. Added on top of that we were placed in a ground floor room below other guests who were partying and stomping on the ground all through the night and into the early morning past 6am. There was no hotel staff on site in the evening and through the morning, making us incapable of speaking with a staff member. Hotel has been difficult to get ahold of to request a refund for the nights we did not stay. Have not responded to multiple emails. read more

I usually don't stay at motels (Lodges), but I needed to get away from the smoke from the fires. I would have preferred something in Bodega Bay (i.e. Inn at the Tides), but they were all booked. I called ahead and mentioned the dog, the lady I spoke to didn't mention any extra fees for the dog.... after all, they claimed to be pet friendly. She also said there was no smoke there. There was, but somehow the AQI was low at 21. I understand this stuff is changing frequently, so I didn't put much thought into that, after all, I was planning to spend all my time in Bodega Bay (which was awesome by the way). When I got there, I got what I pretty much expected. Run down, and the bare minimums, but the room was not very clean and I had what sounded like a herd of elephants in the room above me. Not only did they charge me a 4 or 5 star price, but then they wanted $40 per night to put my dog up. This place wasn't as clean as the dog house in my back yard. The clerk was wonderful though, I have to give him props for that. He even apologized for the pricing and then having to add on the $40/day for my little dog. And even provided bowls for the dog's food and water. I did not complain to the clerk, he was very nice and I didn't want to put him on the spot for something his employer is clearly responsible for, as he did his job and he did it well. He was very friendly and even offered to let me know when a parking spot closer to the room opened up. But to charge me a price that is equal to or more than I have paid at 5 star hotels can't go unnoticed. I'm not knocking this sort of establishment, but this was not a situation where I got what I paid for. I paid for 4-5 star accommodations, expected 3-4 star and got 1-2 star. Most places that are pet friendly only charge $25 per night, and some charge a deposit that I get back at the end of my stay. I wouldn't even complain about it if the room was not dusty and dirty to start with. Also, not even a coffee maker in the room. The tiny fridge barely accommodated the 6 bottles of water I put in it, and the microwave was a complete joke. If the owner of this establishment cares enough to contact me, I can objectively give some good suggestions that are not costly, and would have made my stay more enjoyable, and would have prompted me to give a better review. it's really not about the amount of money I paid, after all, it's only money. It's about what I got for that amount of money. I feel bad for those that might struggle or scrimp on food or other necessities in order to pay this inflated price for what they are getting. read more

Occidental Hotel seems like your average roadside motel in rural CA, but the staff truly set it apart. They are super friendly and nice and really make you feel welcome. The hotel itself shows it's age a little, but everything is neat and tidy. It also has a pool, which was a godsend in the heat of the day. Very grateful for the microwave and the fridge in the hotel rooms. I would happily stay here again and again when in the region. The hotel is located in the small downtown of Occidental, which is basically the size of the whole town. Two markets, half a dozen restaurants, the YMCA, cultural center, and a hardware store are all within 5 minutes walking distance. Would highly recommend making Occidental and the Occidental Hotel your home base for a few days in wine country. read more

I have stayed at Occidental Lodge multiple times. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the staff is kind, and the town is cute. It's one of the nicer motels/lodges I have stayed at. They are updating many of the rooms to be incredibly cute and functional. I have always found an exceptionally clean room, flexible and helpful staff, and beautiful views. Just 20 minutes away from Bodega Bay and Petaluma, it's a perfect cheap-ish retreat in the redwoods. I can't wait to come back in a few months. read more

This place and the entire town of Occidental rocks! We booked a room in another hotel in Valley Ford but that place sucked, so we were stuck at 7:00 PM with no room. Someone from Bodega Bay recommended the Occidental Hotel, so without calling we just drove over. They were super nice and they had this fantastic room right under the big Redwood trees. We liked the Hotel and town so much, we turned a 1 day stop into a week. I really have to find more time to review all the stores and restaurants in Occidental, but long story short... It's pretty much the only game in town, I think. It's a fine place but from the website photos I really thought there would be a little more quaint. It's very simple. I was pleased with the microwave and refrigerator availability but they're in the bathroom area...like it was an add on years after the hotel/motel was built.
