We had read about this restaurant before coming to Newport. We are from the East Coast and were looking for some good seafood. We were here for our grand-daughter's wedding and were watching her dog. We called to make sure that they could accommodate a party of 4 with a dog, and we were told "Yes." We arrived for an early dinner around 4:00 PM. The restaurant was practically empty. When I said that we were a party of 4 with a dog and that I had called and was told it would be okay, I got a look of surprise form the hostess and she walked away. After a few minutes, she came back and told us to walk around the outside of the restaurant and come to the side, which we did. This was a semi-enclosed area. She at first wanted to seat us close to the trash bins that smelled like fish garbage, so we asked to be moved up closer to the front windows, which they did. She placed 4 menus on the table with 4 napkins, 4 knives, and 2 forks. We had to ask for 2 more forks and they brought 4 - duh! The server came over and brought 3 waters with ice and one with no ice - go figure! She asked if we were ready to order. We said "No," as we had just sat down. She took our drink orders which she managed to get wrong. We only ordered two drinks. A beer for my son-in- law and a Canadian Club Whiskey on the rocks - single serving, for my husband. She brought him the drink straight up - he had to ask for the ice to put in his drink. We then placed our dinner orders. They were out of oysters so that we could not order any of the dishes on the menu with oysters. We started with two cups and a bowl of Gino's Homemade Clam Chowder. We all enjoyed the soup very much. My husband and I decided to share the Pan Seared Rockfish and told the server that we would be sharing and requested another plate. The menu described it as pan seared rockfish topped with fresh fennel and honey mustard vinaigrette served with spinach creamy risotto and sauteed seasonal vegetables. They forgot to bring the extra plate, so we had to ask for it again. The other entrees were the Rockfish Fish 'n Chips and the Crew Share which was two pieces of halibut, two prawns, two scallops, and two small oysters with chips and Cole slaw. We had to ask for more water, which never came. They paid no attention to details. The food was enjoyable. The service was terrible. All in all, it was pricey in our book and just okay! Ordered takeout here tonight. We got the angus cheeseburger, the crew share and a large garden salad. Asked for a medium cooked burger and it was well done. The crew share comes with 2 pieces of halibut, 2 prawns, 2 scallops and 2 oysters and fries for $34. It had the smallest portions of halibut. I had planned to split it with my husband but just gave it to him. The salad was watery at the bottom and very mid. They gave us one napkin for everything and not enough sauces or salad dressing. They charge a 15% gratuity for pickup orders and I didn't know that until after I added a tip so they got a fat tip for a pickup of very subpar food. Total bill came to $80. I feel scammed. I used to love visiting here when we have come this way but maybe they got new owners? Just seemed to skimp at every corner. If you want great seafood go south across the bridge to South Beach Fish Market. We got a plate there comparable to the crew share for $24 and it was 10x better. read more

Stopped by Ocean Bleu in Newport, Oregon for lunch and tried their bowl of chowder, homemade crab cake, and rockfish "fish and chips." Overall, the meal was pretty good, with the chowder being the only real disappointment. The homemade crab cake was really tasty and paired nicely with the pineapple salsa. It had a great crunch on the outside while staying soft and moist inside. My only preference would be to have the spicy sauce served on the side instead of drizzled all over, as the flavour was a little overpowering. The rockfish and chips were great too! Good portion size, and the fish pieces were nice and firm with a good texture. The Gino's homemade chowder, however, which is labeled as a "local fav," just wasn't my cup of tea. It was very thick and mushy, with quite a bit more potato than seafood. I also didn't find there was a lot of seafood in the bowl. Service was great too and staff was attentive ;) Overall, a decent lunch with some really tasty items, but I'd probably skip the chowder next time. read more

This was another meal during our May 2024 Newport visit. I recall the server being a teenager and new to the job. It looks like the salmon dish my husband got had cheese on top (allergy) so I'm guessing we asked for it without the cheese after I snapped a photo and we noticed the cheese. There's a chance it's not cheese, but it looks like cheese... and goat/sheep cheese doesn't seem likely (he can have those... just not cow cheese). All I can say is yum!! We stopped here for dinner and it was just what we needed. I had the Bloody Mary and a bread bowl of clam chowder. Both had exceptional flavor. My husband had the seafood stew which he said was his favorite dish (we were on a road trip). My kids enjoyed the kid's fettuccine and chicken strips. We sat on the patio as we had our dog with us. I wanted to eat fresh cooked Dungeness crab, but Chelsea Rose only had fresh Dungeness crab, and Gino's offered Crab on their menu, so off we went to check them out! After sitting down and ordering found out they were out of stock on Dungeness crab , so since we were there we might as well eat! I ordered fresh Oysters on a half shell and the waiter made the mistake on also inputting oysters shooters which both were very fresh clean and tasty! The crab cakes were made with Dungeness crab meat and it was delicious and full of crab and not overly made with fillers. The clam chowder was okay, but a little heavy and thick, but taste was great and served with oyster crackers. Restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, the staff were very friendly and informative! Restroom was clean, right across the restaurant was the pier and Riley's Believe it or not Museum. Conveniently located lots of seafood processing plants nearby. Anytime we're in the Newport area, this is always our first dining spot for their clam chowder; in Steph's and my opinion, it is the best in town, hands down! As a pro tip, you should always order a side of sliced sourdough bread to go with it; it is the perfect pairing for that creamy goodness. For beverages, they have about a dozen flavored sodas to choose from, and I always get the Cherry Bomb from that list. I have dined here 3 times over the past 5 years. The food is amazing, especially the popcorn shrimp, which is fresh, not frozen. The dining area is small and does not appear to be able to adequately accomodate large parties, which is a shame because their food is worlds better compared to other chowder spots on the bayfront. The restaurant may be difficult to navigate for anyone with mobility issues. For example, there were 4 of us in our group and my husband was virtually back to back with the people at the next table. Unfortunately, as a person of size, it is not uncommon for me to receive snide comments or dirty looks; I usually keep my head held high or hold my gaze with the person making the comment until they become uncomfortable and look away. Unfortunately, 2 of the 3 times I have visited this establishment the teens working the counter outwardly laughed and continued making comments as I made my way to my table and smirked when they served my food. Great food, but not a great experience. I've been there a lot of times over the years, almost every time I'm in town. This was disappointing. Website said open to 8:30, so we got there around 7:15. Big mistake! They started turning people away at 8:00, and started cleaning while we were eating. They were pretty inattentive. We felt rushed, and they seemed to feel inconvenienced when we asked for anything. I tried to order dessert at 8:10, but were told the dessert section was closed, so he just brought the check instead. We told the server the website said they were open until 8:30. He just told us, "Yes, the website says that, but it's no longer accurate." That was it. Wow, I usually don't write reviews of places, but I have to say I stopped here on a trip up the coast...I guess it seems like you just have to get clam chowder. The thing about clam chowder is I don't really ever order it...it just isn't a thing where I'm at except for Campbell's soup cans... But the clam chowder at this place blew me away it was soooo good and I got some to go and the family thinks it's amazing too. Also had the Po Boy Sandwich with prawn and the prawns were perfectly cooked. The servers were A LITTLE slow but very apologetic about it and very nice, seemed mature for their age given most of the servers looked very young. We chose this restaurant based on reviews so I feel compelled to share our experience in order to save others from regret. The service was terrible. The restaurant was not crowded and we waited so long to have our order taken that the folks next to us received their food and finished eating by the time someone took our order. The calamari was deep fried but was served room temperature. Not the least bit hot, some bites seemed almost cold. Other bites had uncooked batter. The seafood stew was ok but served with toast that seemed doused in old margarine. The fish and chips were subpar. The fish was so oily that the batter was soggy and wet. The coleslaw was tinged brown. Very unpleasant. We asked for our check and waited and waited, eventually getting up and going to the counter to pay. Afterwards we both felt sick, constantly clearing our throats from the likely rancid oil every thing was fried in, and having upset stomachs. Stick to Local ocean or Clearwater, both are excellent.
