Stopped in for a quick bite, seems like the child has wanted nothing but bowls of chowder since we arrived in town so why not try a place named after it. A no frills kinda spot, but very fun and friendly staff. I wasn't very hungry so I opted just for some calamari. Back in our hometown we are more often served whole squid rather than rings, but here it is rings. The portion is worth the cost, but the best thing about it was the cook. These were delicate and melt in your mouth tender. Good breading but not really seasoned. Not my the best ever but a solid choice. As for the chowder.. it has been the child's favorite so far, but not mine. I was definitely more pleased with the calamari. read more

Well, maybe the crack beverage is hole in the wall restaurant It's unfortunate we wanted to order to go and they never answer the phone and the voicemail isn't set up so kind of irritating So we came into order and had to wait about 15 minutes when we were in a hurry, but we wanted to try all the chowder in Depoe Bay This was our second favorite out of the area. We waited about ten minutes for a menu and the owner and server to decide who would serve us??? Food was so so. Chowder was salty and onion rings were not crisp and didn't have any flavor to them. What was nice was the chowder was hot and it was chilly out. What disturbed me the most was watching the female server scoop the salad onto a plate with her bare hands, wipe them on her jeans, continue to serve others, scratch her arm a few times, and not once wash her hands! This place hasn't changed in about 30 years! I do have to say, they still have the best clam chowder on the coast. I had the bowl and salad combo which was just right for lunchtime. The chowder had a film on top as if it had been sitting a while. It was good though. You could taste the freshness of the clams. Service was to be expected as it is no longer tourist season. There were only two other guests there but the thing that stuck out about the ambiance was the TV in the background. I wouldn't normally mention it but it just stood out a little. Had the volume been lower or muted, it would have been better. Props for keeping the same decor up, and the trains, as I remember from when I was a kid. Really disappointing visit. We sat for over 15 minutes without anyone even acknowledging us -- no greeting, no water, nothing. We observed people coming in and waiting for service and just walking out because nobody was paying attention to them. Once we finally got attention, we found out they were out of bread bowls at 1:45pm, which was the whole reason we came in for the clam chowder. Service overall was slow and inattentive, and the food itself was just okay -- nothing memorable. Between the wait, and the mediocre food, it wasn't worth the time or the money. Hoping this was an off day, but it's hard to recommend based on this experience. read more

Came in for dinner at 5:15. Waited for nearly 20 minutes for the waiter to come to our table with water and tell us that he would be by soon to take our order. The place had a couple of two-top tables already with their food and one four-top table that ordered during that time. There was one take-out order of chowder served during that time. At 5:45, the server took our order: three bowls of chowder, two salads, an order of bread, and a burger with onion rings. Nearly fifteen minutes later, he brought two of the bowls of chowder to our table. Several minutes later, he brought out the burger and onion rings. Then, several minutes later, he brought out one salad. Then, after several more minutes, he brought out the last bowl of chowder and a small salad. We never got any more water in our glasses. The entire time, he complained about numerous things, like how busy they were, that we asked for silverware (a fork), that his football team lost, that we were there after closing (between 5:15 and 6:30), and was repeatedly rude when he talked to us. He charged us extra for salad dressing (Blue cheese) without telling us, even though he told us that they were out of our first choice of salad dressing. They charged us 4.00 for using a credit card - but again didn't tell us that there would be this upcharge. We like to support local establishments. But this was of very low quality. The food was subpar; it took way too long for him to take our order, way too long to get our chowder, and the service was horrible. All he had to do was be pleasant. He showed no regard for us as customers. It seemed as if he expected not to get a tip, or was working to this end. Not to tip him would have been reasonable. Even still, I left him a tip. But I'm also leaving this review. There are other restaurants where the workers care enough to treat their customers with the decency that the server wants to be treated. You don't have to be anything but what you claim to be, but you need to be able to serve a decent bowl of soup in a reasonable amount of time, and do so without giving your customers a hard time. We spent over $100 for poor service, a long wait, and subpar food at this place. read more

We came in during the lunch rush. The restaurant was slammed, and they appeared short staffed. I think people were getting irritated. Aaron and Sierra were working the floor. Both of them moved around and stayed upbeat and positive. I commend both of them for their attitudes and customer service. The food was good and the restaurant was clean. It was decent. Apparently this Chowder Bowl is very different than the Chowder Bowl in Newport. We came on a rainy Monday and it was thankfully pretty empty inside (still very wary about indoor dining with COVID). There was one waitress working and she was very helpful & friendly! We ordered three clam chowder bowls, two chili cups, 3 cups of baby shrimp, and two crab melts. The clam chowder was alright. I normally prefer it to be thick and creamy, but it was pretty watery here. We put the baby shrimp in the clam chowder and if gave it much more texture, but still pretty runny. The chili was pretty delicious. Very thick and flavorful! I love that they allow you to add in cheese and onion if you want more depth to it. The crab meat was very simple... The portion of crab was not much and the cheese flavor was a bit too much since they use both swiss and american. I wish it had some sort of sauce or something to give it more flavor. We went to dinner with my family and had a great meal and great time! Would highly recommend them. The staff was very casual and willing to help with anything you needed. I have a three year old son and he loved seeing the train wrap around the restaurant. The food is one of the best in town. I give it five stars because of the quality food and service.!! Make sure you try the calamari unlike any other calamari we've ever had. You can see in the picture. Not over cooked or breaded but perfect! We've eaten at most restaurants in town and it definitely does have the best clam chowder out of all the locations!! The pasta dish that you see in the picture also was to die for. While visiting Depoe Bay at lunchtime. I am still looking for the best Claim Chowder, we have tried others in the same area and this was the last one to try. I ordered the fish & chips and clam chowder, the fish was good but small portion of fish and lots of fries. This spot was not bad but, I don't think I would return. We only had service when our order was taken then, once more when they came to give the check. The chowder was not bad however, not my favorite. The salad was just a house salad with your choice of dressing so not necessarily a "Caesar" salad and I would not order it again. I went for the crab cakes, because I knew I would be helping everyone else with their meals. Their cakes were great, and came with chipotle tartar, which is a weakness of mine when I enjoy them. I had to become the disposal unit for half of my lovely Wifey's clam strips/fries, and half my FIL's BLT. No argument from me, because it all was delicious. *Staff does not wear masks. I heard this might be a county ordinance but every other shop we went in had mask mandates and this really rubbed me the wrong way. This was a greasy spoon, divey, tourist trap kind of a place. My boyfriend's aunt and uncle love the place and wanted to go there. I got the chowder, which was fine. Not good or great, not bad, just fine. I didn't find it watery like other reviewers. I definitely think it's overpriced though. It was $15 for a bowl of soup. I thought about getting fish and chips, but that was $19. Yikes. As for atmosphere, it's pretty dingey.
