In fact, she told me to call back on a Thursday, when there would be someone who could discuss with me the possibility of utilizing a special discount subsidy that could be applied, depending on my loved one's financial resources. However, when I appeared earlier this year, 2024, I was met with two upper-level directors who actually suggested that perhaps when I called last year, that I actually called a nearby apartment building named "Harbor Terrace" instead. I realized right away that I was being given the brush-off. The fact of the matter of is that these smiling ladies had no intention of assisting me with housing, be it assisted or independent living. At the end of the conversation before I left, the director went to her office and came back with a cute cookie lollipop and thanked me for visiting after telling me that most residents there have family members assisting them with their monthly rent expense. She was telling me something I already knew from years ago while checking into assisted and independent living arrangements in core Los Angeles. Overall, I am rating Harbor Terrace Assisted and Independent Living three (3) stars, and that's generous - - because I like the setup, know the neighborhood , and I know of people who live there because I see them in the neighborhood and talk with them. Without a doubt, I was given the brush-off when I appeared because I am a person of color.. and it was obvious that there was no desire to attract me or my loved as residents at Harbor Terrace. Unfortunate for them.

***PLEASE READ BEFORE PUTTING YOUR LOVED ONE HERE***…read more My mother-in-law was using their facility and we are very disappointed with their service. The cost started at $6000 and raised to $7500/month in less than a month. She occupied a small room less than 10'x10' without a private bathroom. The reasoning for the increase in cost was that she needed special attention so they had to hire another staff person yet she was not given any additional assistance. Two staff members had quit the facility within the two month she was there. The owner and spouse would argue outside her door about HER which made her feel more insecure and helpless. They are not properly staffed, they have one person who is worked 24/7 without any days off. The staff member was so stressed and was crying to my husband how over worked he was. The staff member was fired shortly after. My mother-in-law was asked to leave the facility because the additional $1500/month would not cover her needs. They were willing to let her stay for additional monies. This is very unprofessional and borders on embezzlement. Isn't $7500/month astronomical to begin with for poor service and care? They are very unprofessional and ill-equipped to handle anyone that is not bound to a wheelchair and unable to communicate.

Unsanitary. Understaffed. Unsafe…read more I moved my mother into the memory care wing of this facility just over a year ago and could not be more horrified by the conditions and lack of care that I witnessed. This includes multiple, documented incidents of: 1. bed bugs infestation 2. gross medication mismanagement (my mother was given a triple overdose of one medication, dispensed another resident's medication, and had her emergency inhaler destroyed without authorization) 3. residents left soiled and neglected 4. serious falls among various residents that resulted in broken hips for two of them 5. constant staff turnover and 6. increased dependence on poorly trained temp workers, etc. Given other glowing reviews, my comments may seem like an outlier. However, it is actually a reflection of the drastic decline of Merrill Gardens in the past 10 months. Despite repeated efforts by myself and other families to address these issues with management and several, separate, filed complaints to the Department of Social Services, leadership has failed to properly respond and course correct. As a result, we have been forced to remove our loved ones and place them elsewhere for their safety and well being. Given how Merrill Gardens treats its most vulnerable residents (those with severe dementia), I would highly discourage anyone from considering this facility; it not only demonstrates their lack of care and quality but also their lack of humanity.

When I arrived, she was welcoming and had such a positive energy. She showed me the entire facility, including a couple of available room options. She also answered all of my questions candidly, which I truly appreciate. She also brought in Lauren, the Resident Care Director, to provide a preliminary care estimate. Both were very patient and extremely kind, listening closely to my descriptions of my dad's care needs and preferences. I got a definite sense that I could trust Lauren to be accountable for my dad's physical well being based on her descriptions of protocols for the residents' care. The facility is lovely and spotless and is located in a beautiful, tree-lined area of Rolling Hills Estates. It has an upscale vibe, and the residents I observed appeared very happy to be there. It is definitely well worth checking out for your loved one!

We also were concerned that just taking tours with a sales person was misleading. We were aware that people were leaving one failed facility and going to another with the hope of better treatment. We felt uncertain about leaving our beautiful home and moving into this unknown world. We have been at Cogir of South Bay for just over a month. We are going no further. We are here to stay! We are both overjoyed with our decision. Each day brings us a dining room with our new friends. We all have learned to expect a tasty and attractive looking meal will be presented to us. In our past we only dined so well on special occasions at our favorite expensive restaurants. At dinner time I get my wine. Instead of sleeping in late and watching lots of TV, we attend the 9:30 AM exercise classes in the gym or outside alongside the pool. In addition, we now do our weekly exercises at 1:30 PM inside the heated pool when the sun is strongest. Today the pool water temperature was over 90oF and the air was 73oF. The pool exercises included music and aquatic hardware to enhance our experience. I love my daily swim. Thursdays, before dinner, there is always going to be a singer who performs alongside the bar and also comes up to each of us seated at our table. It already started. We enjoyed our drink from the bar, snacks from the side table, and a bouquet of flowers on our table. A resident took the microphone from the performer and did a few songs that he mastered during his singing lessons. Two couples got up and danced. One of the assistants working for Cogir took the microphone and sang Edith Piaf's famous song and sang it French. My hands were sore with all the applause. There is an exercise room loaded with weights and other typical hardware that I use, a game room where we learned how to play adult dominoes, and an arts and crafts room where my wife just painted a silk scarf under the supervision of a guest artist. And all that was in the past few days. We enjoy the trees, shrubbery and plants that surround every area. They were each planted at their full size. It is a pretty scene when we look down at the grounds from our balcony, day or night. When there is a breeze, it is even more enjoyable. We have a pantry, refrigerator, freezer, stove and microwave that we have not yet used. Why shop, cook and clean-up when your meals are prepared for you? I store my socks and underthings in the empty food pantry. We no longer have monthly TV, electricity, gas, and garbage pickup expenses. Since this place is brand new and all expenses are included, we don't worry about scheduled maintenance and surprise repair bills typical of our 50-year old home. Since I was an engineer I focused on the material parts of Cogir. What make this place run smoothly are the executive director and her staff. The Matre D' in the dining room makes each meal personal. WIth great satisfaction, Dr. Paul and Gretel Lieberman

Additionally she had diabetes and it required her to have daily injections of insulin, normally 3 times a day. I was my aunt's trustee and as I lived 500 miles away, and as she had no relatives locally she could rely upon, I looked for a residential home where she might get steady, reliable care. Yes, I spoke with the owner of the Emerald Isle homes and her assistant. My Aunt's needs were made very clear to them, including the needed insulin shots. Additionally, they received a current medial report on my Aunt. Regardless, after placing my Aunt , the owner refused to give required insulin shots to my Aunt. My 92 year old Aunt, who had been on daily doses of insulin for 30 years , was suddenly deprived of insulin. After 2 or 3 days, without insulin, I got a call from Hospice that they were going to give my Aunt the needed shots but that I had to find another home for her that would give the shots. So I did, and moved my Aunt out of that place within the same week. My Aunt never recovered from that blow to her system and she died at the new ( second) home within a week. I am of the firm opinion that the lack of insulin facilitated my Aunt's death. That owner was absolutely heartless to take my Aunt in and then refuse to give her insulin. There is no way I would have put my Aunt in that home,if I had known they were not going to give her the necessary insulin.

A friend of my mothers suggested that we investigate Silverado Rolling Hills after doing 1 month of in-home care, very expensive, and 1 month at a board & care facility, not enough stimulation, and interaction. I am so glad we did. Why the 5-star rating: 1. Safety: Mom feels safe here. She feels she can express her needs; she is seen and is heard. 2. Mental health: Mom has a smile again and back to her sharp wit. 3. Staff: The staff at Silverado RH are terrific. From the front desk crew to maintenance crew, to care caregivers to the activities team to the administrator, everyone is nice, compassionate, competent, and really do care for the residents. I can reach out anytime of day and get a quick answer and get pictures of mom every few days without even asking. 4. Cleanliness: I have yet to drop in on my mom and find her or the facility dirty or the lingering odor of urine. They clean every day, paint walls when they get scuffed by wheelchairs/walkers and make sure any messes are picked up quickly. 5. Activities: There is always something going on, painting with watercolors, live music, wine tasting, drum circle, flower arranging, outside excursions, chair aerobics, bingo, lecture series, manicures, face masks, the list goes on. 6. Community: when you visit, you get to know other residents and their families. The common theme is that their LO is also happy and thriving at Silverado RH. 7. Food: delicious. Friends and family members can join their LO for a meal at no cost. Just give them a heads up and they will save you a seat. 8. Pricing: one price, every month, not ala carte options like many other residents. Only extra cost is for the incontinence package if you opt in for that. Bottom line, mom is thriving, has a great team around her, she feels safe and enjoys her roommate and other residents, some which are birds and dogs. And our family has peace of mind knowing that she is well taken care of. Thank you Silverado Rolling Hills team for helping her and us through this journey.
