I've known Jeff for 30+ years, and since first meeting him I've moved to LA, NYC, Menlo Park, and now Chico. I've had bikes worked on in all those places and have been mostly satisfied. I now live in Chico on weekends but work in S.F. during the week, and decided to bring an older Felt35 circa 2005 with Ultegra grupo to him. This was to be my Chico road bike for the 2-3 days/wk I spend home. My stylish Specialized Diverge would be my S.F./Marin road bike. The shifter/brake levers were seized up, the worst he has seen. Ultimately he fixed them, and replaced cables, chain, derailleur hangar, truedthe wheels and dialed it in. He spent 5 hours on it. But what he did in 5 hours was stunning. I was absolutely floored by its performance. It has NEVER ridden like this. Never. Even after multiple mechanics "dialing it in." I left my Felt35 at my loft in S.F. and will proudly ride that flawless 2005 rim brake bike all over S.F. and Marin knowing it's one of the best dialed in bikes in SF. Jeff's true value is knowledge and skill. He's done this work with Ducati motorcycles and BMW cars. He's a true mechanical wizard. Whatever he charges, pay more. For giggles I read several of the 1-3 star reviews. Upset that he charges $20 to solve a mechanical problem for you? Get a grip. Some of these things are laughable. Jeff is the real deal. read more

Today was my first visit to Ocean Cyclery and I would highly recommend this bike shop. The owner, Jeff, was very friendly and had one of his associates take care of me immediately. The cause of my flat tire was diagnosed quickly and a new tube plus tape were installed. They even showed me the location of the puncture on the tube. The price, at $30 to fix the flat, plus $10 for the tube, was very fair and in line with many other bike shops. I will definitely use Ocean Cyclery again should the need arise. read more

I just wanted to take a moment to shout out Jeff and Ocean Cyclery. I brought in my Aventon e-bike, which had been well loved in mileage but neglected in care. Jeff patiently explained what would need to be done to make it safe and reliable; he broke down each cost transparently and didn't try to oversell me. Referring to the latter, I recognize that sales is part of owning a bike shop, and I can't tell you how many times a man at a bike shop has bored me to death about why I needed a top of the line bike and the latest model. I worked at a bike shop myself, and was a bike mechanic. I never lead with this and I didn't mention it to Jeff either (mainly because I was so embarrassed that I'd been too lazy to apply my mechanical skills to my own bike!) It's just nice and too rare to not get the "girl with a bike" treatment. Anyway, there are a lot of hipster bike shops and know it all mechanics out there. Ocean and Jeff aren't this. Thank you Jeff! Very unfriendly owner. My husband went in to check out a new bike for himself. Upon arriving, the owner already gave him bad vibes, attitude and all. After trying on two bikes, he said they will start charging. Wtf. So i guess clothing stores should also start charging for trying on clothes. We've been here before in the past and did not have this kind of treatment. Questioning why won't he pick up a bike today. Basically telling him to stop wasting their time at the shop. read more

I came here with my new-to-me Facebook marketplace purchased 7 speed cruiser to get it checked out before riding it. These guys were excellent. I made an appointment via email, and when I called to say I'd be late, it was totally fine. Very appreciative! I believe the shop is run by a couple, the wife checked me in and the husband checked out the bike. Both were super friendly and kind, especially as I know nothing about bikes. Turned out the bike did need one thing adjusted which was only $25. I wish they had fenders in the shop when I was in, but they didn't. All that being said, I haven't tried the bike yet, but my experience here was great! read more

Jeff and Sabine have been great keeping me updated on the bike I ordered from specialized. Built it up proper, showed me how to use a few things on the bike, added peddles i brought in and sent me on my way. They let me know to come back for any tweaks as the bike breaks in. Great shop run by great people. Update: after a few rides I had some cable stretch and Jeff fixed it in 10 mins when i dropped by the shop. Will def be back for tuneups and accessories. read more

I had just experienced my second road bike tire puncture after two rides. The punctured tire was tubeless with a tube. Jeff was super helpful to identify my tubeless rim needed tubeless specific rim tape to work as tubeless. So I decided to forgo the rim tape change and install a tube. Jeff also helped me prepare for my next tire puncture by recommending a presta specific hand pump. I also bought a spare tube. I've biked all over the U.S. and in several other countries, and Ocean Cyclery is, hands down, the best bike shop I've encountered. Jeff and Houston are top-notch mechanics who keep my Bianchi road bike flying smoothly. I especially appreciate their patience and kindness when I ask a thousand questions about the care and feeding of my beast. They have never made me feel disrespected or ignored, which, as a middle-aged woman cyclist, I sadly cannot say for many other bike shops. Indeed, Jeff has gone out of his way to show me how to make basic repairs and adjustments, building my skills and confidence. As for the shop: Ocean stocks a thoughtful range of parts and accessories, from budget family to top-flight professional. Prices are fair for the quality and the area (people, we ain't in Kansas, and Ocean has to pay their rent, too). And when you consider the quality of the service and expertise of the mechanics, the prices are a steal. So glad I found this place! This place feels like a family-run shop. Jeff the owner/mechanic is honest, straightforward, and friendly. Also, this is a minority-owned business with a diverse staff. A breath of fresh-air in the sometimes homogeneous cycling world. They sell used and new bikes at good prices. The selection of electric bikes made me drool. I had a mechanical problem with a unique kind of bike. I called around to different shops in the city to be told, "we don't work on that kind of bike." When I emailed Ocean Cyclery, they said, "Oh yeah, we can work on that. We'll make an appointment for you." The only shop in the city that works on (almost) any bike. Five stars? Really? Yes, really. Hear my tale: So midway on a ride from Montara to San Francisco, I snap a cable. It's like 4 PM on a Saturday. I go to the closest bike shop, and the mechanic there (who knew I had to get back to Montara) proceeds to rip out my cable, before declaring, "Yeah, we're closing in an hour man, there's really nothing we can do tonight." Of course, if you can't say something nice, you shouldn't any at all. So I won't mention that this particular bike shop starts with an "S," ends in an "E," and in the middle reads "POK." Okay so I roll over to Swell. Closed so the kids there can go to a wedding. Then, thank all that is good and holy, I called Ocean Cyclery. Minerva picked up the phone. I explained my situation. She said, "Come on by. We'll help you." So I pedal hard, get over to Ocean in like 15, and owner Jeff proceeds to welcome me, get to work on my bike. Jeff had the problem fixed and had me out on the road before dark. He was courteous and funny in conversation, and had me out on the road well before dark. I don't live in SF, but if I did, I'd be taking my bike to Ocean Cyclery on the regular, and giving them my business: it's a rarity to find such a mix of courtesy, professionalism, and technical chops at a bike store, but Ocean Cyclery has it (and gets it). read more

Just a great bike shop. Called about a tweaked front rim. Owner Jeff said bring it in he'd look at it. So I walked in like an hour and a half later. He stopped working on a bike on a rake. Looked at my rim and just started talking to me and fixing it. Never met the guy before. Super nice, informative. Straightened my rim in 45 minutes. Very responsible. Had an issue with my new cassette rubbing against my frame so decided to get it checked out. Bike Tech was working on something else so had to wait a couple minutes, nbd. The issue is that almost the entire time, the tech seemed bothered like I was intruding on something more pressing he had to take care of. This may have been the case but I don't think I was pushy or anything, just waiting with my son while he found some time to help us. After a few minutes he found some time, I explained what was up and took my bike to inspect it. It wasn't a complete build but was only missing the cabling. It's a carbon frame mind you, and goes and puts the frame in bike stand instead of the seat post, ok fine. The he drops my bike. No sorry or my bad. Just seemed mad at his folly. Ended up being that one of the cogs wasn't in correctly (noob mistake). He resolved the issue quickly which I was happy about. Now, I know time is money, but he proceeded to charge me $20!!! I know it was my fault for not saying anything about the issues I was having with his service but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. I paid, left, and am still looking for another LBS to make my main stop. This place was recommended by a bike bud but I don't plan on returning again. *this happened a few months ago. After a long hiatus from bicycle riding it was time to return. From the forums I learned a new term--LBS, which stands for Local Bike Shop (store). If ever there was a shop worthy of this nemonic Jeff and Sabina's Ocean Cyclery is my first choice because they really do care about people. This caring nature has influenced me to purchase multiple bikes, accessories, and even their T-shirt (which is really nice). Years prior to entering OC to purchase a bike I had a chain fail on my motorcycle. The cats at OC were friendly, lent me some hand tools, and helped me on my way. I remembered this interaction, and it was a primary influence on my purchasing decision. I knew that if I bought a bike from them they would make sure I was a happy camper, and they have done so--so much so that this is the shop where I bring my friends. Mom and pop bike shops in general are of a giving nature. It's not like they are going to get rich running a shop selling bicycles. They do it because they love bikes--Jeff, his family, and crew all love bicycles. You can see their faces light up when they are discussing bicycles. I always feel welcome when I visit OC. The staff is friendly, the shop is nicely laid out, and they generally have in stock the things I need. In San Francisco I found that most shops no longer stock BMX race bikes. Currently I only know of two. Ocean is one of the two, and the one I chose to go to when I bought mine. Jeff and Sabina worked with me on the price, helped me select the accessories, made sure the bike was properly set up, and ready to ride. I've had so much fun on this bike it is almost as if I found the recipe for buying happiness (almost). :) In addition to selling bikes OC has a nice selection of tools, helmets, riding wear, lights, tires, pumps, and other accessories. They specialize in electric conversions for the folks that want a super commuter bike. I've seen Jeff customize everything from a three wheeled recumbent, to an MTB with the packages that he has available. He knows how to make sure the customer gets the bike they want, and maybe more importantly need. Another great thing about OC is that they have local knowledge--they have been in town a long time. When I asked Jeff about places to ride he was able to suggest both well known, and some nearly secret riding locations. Jeff grew up in San Francisco. He rides all the time--even to work. He's seen the city grow into a wonderful place for bicycles, and is a significant part of that growth. In the front of the store they keep literature from the locals happenings, and organizations like the SF Bicycle Coalition. Sabina takes an active part in these things helping with the community. In San Francisco we bicycle riders are really lucky. There are probably over 30 bike stores in town with good people, nice selections, and what not. I've been to most of them, and I do enjoy the other stores. However when I think of my LBS I think of Ocean Cyclery. read more

As a bicycle novice, it's a little intimidating to talk to Bike experts and aficionados. They tend to not hide their disdain for "cagers," like myself, very well. (side note, I had to look up that term for car drivers, apparently it's not flattering). Jeff at Ocean Cyclery was nothing like that. I'm the type of person that likes to support small business. I brought my daughter bike for a tune on 4/14, I was told it will be ready by 4/18-4/19 that week goes by and no one call to let me know it wasn't going to be ready. I called on 4/21 in the morning to inquire about the status, I was told they haven't started and it can possibly be ready by end of day if not Tuesday 4/24. The tune up took two weeks instead of what they had put down on paper. I figure to ask for discount when I pick up the bike (doesn't hurt to ask, right) for the inconvenience and Ocean Cyclery not sticking to the date originally quoted. No discount was given or simple apology. Please call your customers if you can't stick to the date you provide. We are all humans and understand things happen, a simple call goes a long way :) I hope you take this feedback to make your business better and have happier local customers. read more
