I have been customer for a while but the service has deteriorated. I went for a hair cut both couple were there. The guy cut and just chopped off my hair. If they charge you $45.per cut it is equivalent to 15 min cut. Wife gets upset if spouse spend more than 15 min for haircut. Glad found some one who is passionate w/ the work and knows customer service . I don't recommend this place at all.. read more

I had a bad experience at another salon on Ocean Ave a couple years ago that left me crying. I guess that's what happens when you pay $20 for a hair cut - you get what you paid for! I was hesitant to try another salon on Ocean that I thought about paying $100 for a haircut just to not experience that again. During the midst of the pandemic as things started to slowly open up and the vaccine was limited, I saw on NextDoor that a neighbor recommended Ocean Hair Design. A few other neighbors commented with positive words. My over grown hair was almost down to my butt at this point, so how bad could it be?? I'm glad I took the chance because I've come here for a few times now and I always enjoy my cuts with Alan. It's crazy that I never really noticed this place as it's right across the street from Walgreens. I ain't paying $100, but I'm also not paying $20 anymore, haha. I pay $50 for a haircut and my hair is down to the middle of my back. Alan always give me a fresh wash then a fresh cut. He's always making my hair look fab afterwards. I love how he's so focused on making everything even for me and also gives me tips on how to care for my newly bleached hair. One time he recommended me to re-dye my hair even though I had just did a balayage 2 weeks prior :') no offense taken. I've had a cut with Cindy once and she's great too, but Alan is my go-to guy. Can always count on Ocean Hair Design! I've been getting my hair done by Allen and Cindy since I was 5 years old. I am now in my 20s. My family lives around the area and we all get our haircuts/hair coloring done by them. They're both very knowledgeable and super friendly. I have gotten my hair done for weddings, proms, special events by them and was always satisfied with the look I got. I can honestly say I have never left disappointed. My signature look is keeping my hair long, sometimes with long layers, and with wispy straight bangs. I frequently go in for my hair cuts and bang trims Experience: I wanted to dye my virgin dark brown hair platinum blonde. My mistake was that I trusted someone else who did not listen to me TWICE and kept giving me Bayalage because she felt that I would have to be "super committed to going that blonde". I have had the same type of hairstyle for my whole life....I wanted something different! For my second time going to her, I asked for platinum blonde again...more blonde no dark hair. She kept trying to sway me from going all out blonde and gave me Bayalage AGAIN. I paid nearly $500+ just to look the same and spent like 6 hours on the chair. I was so disappointed I told myself I wasn't going back to that stylist because she wouldn't listen and kept putting her opinions on me. I decided to go back to Cindy to go all out platinum. She turned my Bayalage into an ICY PLATINUM BLONDE in ONE SESSION with less time and way less pricey. She mentioned maybe that the other stylist was maybe scared it would damage my hair because some of my hair was still dark brown and some already bleached blonde. I regret not going to Cindy for my drastic hair change the first time. My hair thickness type is "Fine", it's not course hair at all, so my hair lifts fast with bleach. I left feeling EXTREMELY satisfied and finally achieved the look I that I wanted. Cindy did my hair on a Saturday morning. She was able to fit in a few cuts in between my sessions while we were waiting for the bleach and color to settle in on my hair. She knew how to balance the work place and remained professional and quick. For making my appointment, I booked in person after consulting on how to go about the session. I'm extremely impressed with how quickly I was able to get the look that I wanted. She was also able to get my wispy bangs back. I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! Environment: Spacious hair saloon with many chairs. Magazine cut outs and posters of different hair styles on the wall. Many hair products you can purchase at the saloon. There's a clean bathroom. A few chairs in the waiting area. Looks clean and has sanitizer at each station - I would suggest calling ahead or going in-person to set up an appointment. Be specific in what you want and if you're not satisfied then ask for adjustments before you leave. I highly suggest Ocean Hair Design! I definitely be coming back here to maintain this icy blonde! I have been coming to this establishment FOR YEARS, and I absolutely love Cindy's work. She has done balayages and regular dyes on my hair as well as cut my hair very well. I like how she also recommends me products to help strengthen my hair/ increase hair growth as she notices I have been losing hair from time to time. Service is great and she is very friendly. I love my haircut from this place and don't think my color was bad in quality, but I'm not sure what all the other reviews are talking about when they say the prices aren't too bad. Haircut price was great. Cindy was sweet and all, but she seemed to not know my style at all. I came in wanting my low lights enhanced but walked out with a lot more of my head highlighted. I would have preferred getting what I'd asked for rather than something else because it was the style she preferred. Shame on me for not knowing the difference and getting upselled. Again great job on my highlights but it wasn't "me" and I didn't expect to be charged that much for the color job. I can't help but think I was overcharged. I saw this place had good rating so I went to get a haircut, but the experience wasn't good. The store outside looks a bit sad but inside is bright and big. I got a haircut from the man. He asked me what kind of style I want. I got a nice haircut before and I took some pictures of it, so I showed the pictures to him. However, he has his own opinion and cut my hair in a different way, and kept my hair way longer than the picture. After that, he put a huge amount of liquid hair gel on my hair. I was like, dude, this is not the style in the picture. Why would you asked me what style I want but ended up cutting it differently? The hair cut cost $30 but I had to go home wash my hair and spending another hour to fix my hair. read more

Cindy and Allen are the best! They're really friendly and always give tips on how to take care of your hair when you ask. Cindy's very considerate when you talk about your hair / styling needs. They did a great job with my first perm and made sure I felt at home the entire time. I got a perm a second time since my sides didn't grow out yet the first time, and they did a great job on that too. Would recommend if you are getting a perm for the first time. They've been cutting hair for 2+ decades and really know what they are doing! I rarely get my hair done by the same person. I usually find a salon I trust and get whoever is available. I found this place through reviews and made an appt for a haircut. Alan cut my hair and he was very good. I made another appt to do my color. Cindy did my color and I'm in love! I recommend this place and I also recommend you make an appt if you want to try it. I showed them old photographs to indicate the haircut I wanted, yet they consistently gave me a different style, often based on their own opinions. Even in a civil war zone like Myanmar, barbers perform better than those here. In Thailand, a haircut takes at least an hour, whereas in America, they rush through it in fifteen minutes. The lack of patience and the apparent focus on money over quality is disheartening. Barbers here need to be more professional. Hair is my second face and why u guy treat me like this. read more

The female hairstylist (Cindy? I'm guessing) did an AWESOME job on my hair. Pictures don't do it justice. They took me in as a walk in, which was a surprise because I wanted to get a haircut plus do some balayage. I was in there for maybe 2.5-3 hours. I got a hair cut, a great head massage, a deep conditioning treatment and balayage all for $195. The optional conditioning treatment was an additional $15 charge. Both of the hairstylists are SO nice and they know their stuff. Great little spot near my house, so I'm definitely making this my go to salon. read more

DO NOT COME FOR A HAIRCUT OR A TRIM. DO NOT. THEY CANNOT CUT HAIR. YOU WILL LEAVE WITH A HAIRCUT THATS LITERALLY WORSE THAN BEING BALD. So incredibly awful. Astronomically horrible. I literally cannot describe to you how awful of a haircut she gave me. The service was very nice and they were very friendly, but they are awful at cutting hair. I wish I could give them half a star simply bc they are friendly. But they are NOT skilled. For reference, I had chest length thick pin straight 1A hair with a middle part, probably the easiest possible type of hair to work with. I asked for just a simple V-cut, did not ask for any real length cut off, and she chopped off 5 whole inches in a completely straight line. I had nice thick long hair before leaving. She literally scalped me to the point where I cannot even use a regular black hair tie to tie up my hair, I have to use those clear plastic elastics bc she literally chopped off 80% of the hair densityI had. I only asked for ONE thing, how did she manage to mess up TWO things ???? From the back, my hair just looks like a long rectangle. So for a V-cut, I assumed she'd have to trim off the sides and do some touch ups on the back of my head. In the chair, I couldn't differentiate between whether she was cutting the hair for a V shape, or if she was genuinely cutting it shorter since I could only see the front of my head in the mirror. This is my first time going to this salon. They are very friendly and I'm sure that regulars that go would have a great experience. I want to give them the benefit of doubt but it's hard for me to overlook the fact that I asked for just a V-cut, and she not only DIDN'T give me the V-cut, but instead gave me an entirely different hairstyle and charged me $50 for a haircut that's so awful I could've done it 10x better at home for free. I read a bunch of the other reviews for this place before coming, and it seems like they're pretty skilled at hair coloring/perms. I've been coming to Ocean Hair Design for a little over 10 years and always have a great experience. Allen and Cindy are both talented and can make my hair look amazing no matter what shape it is in at the moment. They also give good advice for hair care. I like how they both work relatively quickly but always do a great job. My hair is very straight and shows any mistakes, but I never have to worry about that here. I recently came in to get my pandemic hair cut off and reshaped, and they did not disappoint. I was very happy with the safety protocols (masking, hand sanitizer, no-contact payment through Venmo and Zelle), and cleaning. I have been going to Cindy the last few years to get my haircut and get a color treatment. I called about a week ahead to book a Saturday appointment to get a haircut and a double process color melt balayage. The whole process is a time intensive process anywhere, but the nice thing was they were cool if I wanted to order food and get it delivered so I could eat it while waiting for my color to set. I went with sushi since that's a relatively easy thing to eat with no mess. Prices are reasonable for San Francisco. Cindy is also very friendly. This is a small business I am happy to support. My mom and I got a our hair permed by Cindy yesterday. I've never had a perm before but my hair is very fine, flat, and unruly and so is my mom's so after doing some research on digital/ Korean perms we wanted to give it a try. Cindy listened to us and delivered exactly what we wanted more volume with the slightest barely noticeable wave and no curls. Our hair still feel soft and undamaged while looking like we spent 40 min on blowout. Both of us would definitely go back for a trim and a Korean/ digital perm! Cindy is amazing! I told her that I trimmed my own hair and that I haven't color treated my hair in over a decade. And she didn't hair shame me like many other stylists I've gone to in the past! For once, a stylist who just listens and works with you to realize your hair dreams! I absolutely loved how my oil slick color treatment turned out. On to the hair care.The atmosphere of this place may not be chasing after the super chic, but it really gives off a homey, love-filled, family oriented environment. In my opinion, that's like 10 times better. Cindy is amazing. She's quiet, modest, sweet, patient and beautiful. Her hair is awesome, so you can assume that she'll do the same for you. She knows EXACTLY how to execute a haircut and she does it with such finesse and speed. I went here last, last Friday. The Friday before Chinese New Year, so everyone was getting their hair done. Cindy graciously took me in, and I asked her to give me a trim & dye. I wanted two colors in my hair, a dark brown and two strawberry blonde chunks peeping in the front. I was a little hesitant because this other place I went to didn't know what the fridge I was talking about, and they're all "hip & modern." However, Cindy did. I am such a ho bag in that I judged a book by its cover. I booked this because I just want the most basic of all trims - and don't really feel like spending $100 on it. I found this place through Yelp; rave reviews on an unclaimed business means they are unlikely to buy good reviews. Plus, I hear it's cheap. So - I got there and saw old 80s/90s hair ads posted on the walls. I panic because the last time I visited a place like this, I had the most terrible choppy layers of all time. I panicked quietly because I am just so sure no one can mess up the basic trim I need. It's finally my turn with Cyndi. Homegirl gave me the best head massage/shampoo of my life. I hate when stylists pat shampoo on your head; get in there and clean that scalp! Well, she did. I almost thanked her and left because I was so content. Thank goodness for this relaxing shampoo because I ended up with the best layers in a long time; blended, natural, and clean. I will most definitely return to Ocean Hair Design. Allan is amazing. I've been to him twice so far but both times he totally listened to exactly what I wanted. The first time was pretty simple cause I just wanted a trim and help with how to style my bangs while they were growing out. This second time I went in though I was ready for a drastic haircut and I knew I wanted Allan to do it. I showed him the pic I wanted and while he was cutting I got a mini anxiety attack cause it looked like so much was coming off. I was a hair gypsy traveling from hair salon to hair salon just to find a hair salon to call my own. It really should not be THAT complex to get your hair cut, but it is. You would think price plays a big factor in customer service, the hair cut, hair style, and ambiance? Cindy provides a top notch hair cut, easy going atmosphere (totally unpretentious) and you leave feeling like you did not empty your savings to get a hair cut. I've tried various spectrums of hair salons from the most expensive trendy salons to the cheapest Chinatown 'salons' where you will leave with the most horrendous hair cut ever and tears running down your face. Okay, I was a little suspicious of all these great reviews for this place, only because of a few reviewers who haven't reviewed much....but damn, CINDY IS GOOD! I just walked on in and a simple trimming turned into a color extravaganza, and I left looking a lot better than I was aiming for. Without much extraneous talk, CIndy showed her skills with clippers, scissors, and color brush, letting a girl know that she understood my individual hair issues. Cindy is soft-spoken, modest, and sweet. Prices are about the same every where else you might go, but I'm just extremely happy with the results here. Allen and Cindy have been cutting my husband's hair for 7 years or more; mine for about 5 years. Their shop is not fancy, but it's clean and comfortable, and they take good care of you. I have never had a bad haircut from either of them, but I think Cindy has a finer touch for a woman's style. I appreciate that they both listen to your needs and desires, make suggestions, but don't ever do anything you ask them not to do (cut your hair too short, for example). The value simply cannot be beat. We travel about half an hour out of our way to go here, but it's worth it. Every time we try a salon closer to home, we end paying a lot more and are less satisfied with the results. They are never allowed to retire ;-) This isn't going to be the place for you if you need ambience and the very latest trendy colors/styles, etc. But for the rest of us average, working-class folks who want to look good without breaking the bank, I don't think you'll go wrong with Ocean Hair Design. read more

It was a Monday and I felt like playing hooky from class. My fellow carpooler went to class, and I took my car in search of a nail spot that did shellac and a hair cut. After getting my nails done, I called to make an appointment with Cindy after reading all the rave reviews people had left about their shop. I was not disappointed! The shop is a little outdated, but quaint. It seems to still have the original posters from the 1990's. Other than that, because I hadn't known exactly what I wanted, I looked through the hair books to show Cindy a gist of what I may wanted to do. I wanted long layers, bangs, and my massive amount of hair thinned out. She was so nice about all of the above. I started having an allergy attack and she quickly grabbed me some water.
