Second haircut by Amy and I will tell you that for $15 this typically $40/haircut LA girl could not be more happy!! YES. $15!! For long hair! Count it! The details: I don't speak a lick of Chinese, but I've had no problems communicating with Amy. Both times (as suggested) I did bring in a photo. Amy does speak fairly good English though and we even enjoyed a smattering of small talk this last time. What impresses me is how much attention to detail Amy shows when cutting my hair. Though she is quick, it seems like she is very careful/thorough. And most importantly, both times I have loved the end result! I always fear coming out with a mullet or fob-cut from these Asian places, but I've loved the clean, layered look I've gotten both times. read more

I was a little surprised about how small the shop is as well as the fact that they don't do anything besides gel and regular polish (no acrylic, no hard gel). Haircut OK, Color BAD BAD BAD. I've gotten a hair cut by both Amy & Tony & they are both very good at cuts. I usually get a trim plus some layers & I've never really been disappointed on the haircut end. I have really long hair & my total came out to $17. VERY reasonable for the area! However, I naively assumed that since they were good at haircuts, that they would be good at color. NOPE, I was wrong. I went to Tony for a full color. I pointed out the color I wanted from the color book - a dark ash blonde. What I got was a reddish ugly brown that resembled nothing of the color I pointed out. Moreover, he missed spots throughout my hair, including one very obvious spot in the front. He did a terrible job getting the roots, and he didn't care to fix it or even mention that he made a mistake. I had to go to another salon just to fix the damage done here. The other salon even said that it was not a professional coloring that was done to my hair & I agreed. I ended up spending more than three times the amount I wanted to spend just to fix my hair because I didn't even want Tony touching my hair again. I was a fan, but after that terrible, unprofessional, disgusting job, I will not be returning. It just goes to show they put no care into their work. read more

I'm going to make this quick as possible since I'm super excited with how my hair looks right now. It's pretty impossible to get a same day appointment in this city! I called so many places and read good reviews about this place and gave it a shot. I got in, Tom was busy ,but he could fit me in for a quick haircut. You see, I've been pretty spoiled with getting my hair done. My brother's gf does my hair when I'm down south for almost nothing and also, one of my best friend's mother does my hair, for like free. I moved to SF about 6 months ago and have no way of getting to them and I can NOT justify getting my hair and bangs trimmed for $50 +. I have LONG stick straight hair, easiest hair to do. This place was AWESOME. Tom knows exactly what he's doing and did not mess around. Most trims on my hair you can't even tell the difference but this time, you can. My hair is STILL long but fullllll of body. My bangs are amazing and are actually cooperating with me. It's usually the hard part about my hair 'cause straight hair +bangs= a cowlick that came out of nowhere! Super thank you and I will more than likely be back for my next trim =D PS. My boyfriend's mom recommended this place to me to try my next cut and color. Being that her hair didn't look like a total disaster, I decided to give them a try. I made an appointment for Saturday afternoon with Amy and came prepared with a picture of what I was looking for. I'm glad that I brought a pic because there was a *slight* language issue (I knew I should have paid more attention in my conversational Mandarin class in community college!). We were able to stumble through with the help of sign language and my picture, what I wanted and, with the help of the "big book of hair color swatches" I was able to pick the highlight colors of choice. Amy was did an excellent job! She also gave me a totally awesome scalp massage while shampooing my hair. The cut and color were great and when I got the final bill - I was sold!! $76 for a shampoo, cut, highlight and style. Thank you Amy! The shop offers manicures and pedicures in addition to their hair services. It's a pretty big shop with lots of nice natural lighting. They could use a bit of cosmetic help to make the place look more modern, but then I'm sure that's why the prices are so awesome. read more

I got a great $16 haircut from Amy and have never been happier. I've always had bad experiences with hairdressers who manage to make my hair so thin or literally never listen to what I want. Amy actually LISTENS to what you want and will turn your hair into a miracle. Also, I thought she was just spraying water in my hair, but I think it was some kind of serum that made my hair soft and smell so good. I will be returning back to her place for my next haircut! OK, I hate hairdressers. I don't like getting fussed over, I like being in and out and the worst haircuts and colours of my life have been in the salons where I've been charged upwards of $150 for the privilege. I figure I can walk out of a salon despairing over my hackjob haircut and colour I just paid a lot of money for (& then have to come in and get it fixed and sit in the chair AGAIN and it's always awkward, ugh). OR... I can pay the least amount possible, just get my layers maintained and you know... maybe I'll still hate it, but at least I didn't pay a lot. (note: my ex's mother was a hairdresser and she showed me how to dye my own hair really well, so i don't even pay for that anymore, except for the dye! and it looks EXACTLY the way i want it to... and very natural and soft) Having said all that, I'd had my only really bad cheapie experience at a salon down the road back in June, so this time I hopped onto yelp to see who had the good reviews and I picked this place. Amy cut my hair. She's really nice and really listened (she speaks English) and did a great job. I asked for what I always do -- layers all over, framing the face, please keep the length. This place is great!!!! I'm usually really picky about my hair, but one year ago, i had a moment when i suddenly wanted to get a wave now...and i mean NOW. Looking at my wallet, I only had $55, so i drove to Irving, look around for a decent looking place for a cheap perm and stumbled across Modern Design. At first, I was nervous...perm is PERMANENT....and I didn't know how good or bad the place was, but since i was in the moment, i went for it. The result was AMAZING!!! for only $50, It's as good as the salon i went to in LA that charged me $300 for perm. Ever since then, I come back for AMY for anything that have to do with my hair. I cannot trust anyone else with my hair. It is a bit hard to communicate with her since her English is so-so, but she always tries her best to make small talk and she usually remembers what we talk about from last visit and follows up. So... I got my haircut today for CNY... and I have this dread of impending doom. It's hard for me to comprehend: $21 (prior to tip) for a cut AND wash???................. Walking out of there, I was quite pleased. I had a simple request: -trim, -redefine my long layers, -and emphasize my long style bangs. I've been waiting to go to NY to have my stylist there give me a cut but he bounces between NY, Tokyo, and London... needless to say, I was not able to catch him this month for CNY. I would have waited too but I opted to uphold the lucky tradition of cutting one's hair prior to CNY for luck. I haven't washed my hair yet, I plan to... will it still look nice after?? If for worse, I'll re-rate! ...$21..... and I left satisfied as opposed to horrified.... Very thankfully, but nonetheless-- weird.... Love it! What a deal! Thanks Amy. Also, a comment on the hair washing: I LOVE it when they scratch and massage my scalp. Initially, she did not, during the wash. But on the occasions she did, with my eyes closed, I'd emphasize the widest, teethless grin, that I hoped would have said: 'Yes. Please do that. I like it. I like very much.' I guess I could have asked but it's impolite in the Asian culture (and she is Asian) to ask an elder to do things. And so, every time my scalp was scratched, one can tell by looking at my face, #superpleased!purrrr. It was so good, I didn't even care if others walked by with a judging glare thinking: #weirdo. It was a great system, I think she caught my drift because I got lots of scratching and massaging during the latter half of my wash ^___^ Minor hiccups: Some water got in my shirt, and on my face during the wash. It was lovely. Thank God it wasn't shampoo, that would have stung. During the cut, her grasp seldom missed my hair and got my face. #(small)ow. Least it wasn't the blades! I had a hair dilemma! I've been coloring my hair on my own for about 4 years now but this time I got a color a tad too dark for my liking. I'm a medium brown kinda girl, even tho my natural hair color is black. I actually used to get my hair colored by Amy at Modern Design Salon but as time went on, I figured I could color my hair by myself and it wouldn't be anything fancy and it'd be cheaper so I stopped going. Well, after the dilemma, I didn't wanna damage my hair even more by mixing colors and all that so I had to seek out Amy and her skills again. I called for an apt and I got one the next morning. I arrived at 10:30am and waited about 15mins for Amy. She got right to it! Everything went great. I even enjoyed the massages she gives while she's washing your hair. (Almost made me feel like going there once a week, just for that)! The whole process took about 2hrs, which wasn't too bad. She even helped me feed the meter (since it is Irving and its hard to find no-meter parking). Price for color and hair cut: $58 + tip. Overall, the experience was great! *thumbs up* read more

Whenever I am in San Francisco and have enough time for a manicure pedicure, this is THE place I go to. It is no-nonsense and the prices are incredible for what you get. The manicurists are super fast and does a really great job. They also have a hair salon attached as well as an aesthetician available for facials and peels etc. You have to make an appointment though for those services. Manicures and pedicures can be on a walk-in basis as long as you're early. Weekends, you can forget about. Parking sucks though on Irving Street but if you are able to get a metered spot within a block, the manicurists are happy to go feed your meter for you. read more

I used to come here regularly to get my hair done. I had a few different people do my hair, but I eventually kept going back to Amy. She's given me a color job once, and trimmed my hair before my wedding. She does exactly what I ask for, and that's what I really want from a stylist. And the price that she charges is a steal. It's harder for me to get there now because I live in the South Bay. Janet did my nails and I love the cute little bow she added for me. The price was reasonable considering how much time and rhinestone that was put on my nails. How do you forget customers appointment? Second of all, I wanted to cut my hair short. My hair was very long and I asked for something shorter. They cut way more than I asked first of all.
