I hate to admit, but we visited the ocean aisle creamery multiple times during our stay in Ocean isle for a sweet delight! Each time we went, there was a line out the door because it was very popular spot! I tried several of the different ice cream flavors and every time I enjoyed each and every single one of them. I would highly recommend that you visit the ocean Isle creamery each time you come to Ocean Isle. We stopped in after dinner for dessert! The line was almost out the door but was moving quickly. The available flavors are labeled and posted on surf boards on a pole - such a cute idea! We each got a kids cup with one scoop. I ordered carrot cake and the girl put peanut butter chip in by accident. Then I pointed it out, she quickly apologized and grabbed a new cup. The Choc chip cookie dough had ice crystals in it, the mint chocolate chip only had a hint of mint, and the chocolate caramel just seemed like grocery store chocolate ice cream. Grabbed a couple of cones after dinner one night on Ocean Isle. The place is a happening spot at the 7-8pm hour. There was a socially distanced line out the door, and I recommend parking your car or golf cart at an adjacent parking lot because it's a bit hairy getting in/out of their parking lot with all the traffic and the outdoor picnic table seating sharing space in the lot. We ordered chocolate ice cream for the kids, Java Chip waffle cone, Birthday Cake waffle cone, and a Strawberry cake cone. All were very tasty, and I particularly liked the waffle cone flavor. Cute rocking chairs on the front porch if you're able to snag one! Reasonably priced to treat the family to a little dessert. One tip if you're not buying for the whole fam: $10 minimum for credit/debit card transactions, so bring cash for smaller purchases or they have an ATM off to the side you can use. read more

I have been to the Ocean Isle Creamery at least once each time that I have visited Ocean Isle due to proximity. The ice cream is not bad, although I will say that I have never been particularly excited about my ice cream choice. They are always busy, and it's cool that the ice cream is homemade. Although given these factors, standing in a line for ice cream in the heat during a pandemic isn't really my idea of a good time. To me it would be helpful if the ice cream was colder so it didn't melt so fast as we had to eat it outside for obvious reasons. I couldn't get halfway through my cone without having to toss it because it was melting everywhere. Think there were also only about eight flavors to choose from and the chocolate I had this time was a bit lacking in depth and flavor. This is an affordable ice cream place with great portions for kids. It won't break the bank with a large family. I love the toffee delight personally but they have a wide variety of flavors for your palate. They practiced social distancing measures in line and staff were masked up too. The absolute disregard for public health and safety during a global pandemic by Ocean Isle Creamery is astonishing. 1 star is still too many for Ocean Isle Creamery. The first girl working was leaning over the ice cream with her mask around her chin and repeatedly touching her face and seemed annoyed she was having to wear it. When she was asked to put her mask on properly she rolled her eyes and stormed off. The owner was not wearing her mask either and did not seem concerned when it was brought to her attention that her employees were not following CDC guidelines for Covid-19. I definitely wouldn't call this place a creamery. Everything seemed like it was bought in bulk from a food vendor. The sign says homemade, however, this ice cream definitely tasted like it was purchased at the grocery store and had lots of food coloring in it. My kids didn't mind it though. It is overpriced for the awful quality and service, but that's how it goes in vacation destinations. Service was awful. I get that this may be a place for high school kids to work summer jobs, but at least train them a little bit in customer service. I went last night (5/26/18) and the 3 girls standing at the counter were so rude and couldn't care less about the ice cream they served us. Some rather limited hours (hopefully that will broaden during the summer?), but the service and choices were wonderful. Would I especially seek them out? Hmm, well I think it helps being conveniently located as you come in on Causeway Dr. The Deets: On various trips to OIB our group has stopped by Ocean Isle Creamery as it is right on Causeway Drive as you come off the bridge, and beside the realty office we pick our keys up from. As it is a great location on a heavily traveled road, it's hard to miss. It has a pretty small/cramped parking lot so be careful there. The outside itself is very bright, inviting, modern, and very beach shore like. Nice rocking chairs outside on a porch with ceiling fans make for a good place to settle down with your selections. As you go in, it is a huge open space, the ice cream counter itself does not take up very much of the area. More seating would help as it seems a bit empty for the space. The staff are mostly young student aged employees and on my visits have done ok with service for the most part. Do note that there is a $10 threshold before you can use credit/debit cards...I feel that would limit their business for some reason (why not $5?). There is a moderate list of choices for the ice cream/yogurt/sorbet selections that day. Be sure to look in the freezer itself as I found the list didn't exactly match what was in the freezer. This last visit I got the blueberry cheesecake and then the cheesecake flavors. I was not really overwhelmed by the cheesecake flavor itself in either one, but it was a nice cool break and refreshing dessert. The flavor and product itself was ok, but not a "wow factor." For the prices charged, I was expecting more of a "wow" there. It definitely helped cool me down on a very hot Saturday waiting to get into our cottage for the week. read more

Know what you are getting into! The lines are too long and the prices are too high. So if you're willing to stand in that and pay up, then go for it. You won't be let down by the quality of ice cream, but after you spend $20 for four ice creams, you won't exactly reach enlightenment either. I recognize the need to survive in a competitive market and all since summer is their major season, but again, I've been to other "homemade" ice cream places before, and the quality is higher and you get more for your money's worth. Then factor in someone who doesn't care, has 4-5 people in his family, and the kids want to try each flavor. Know what you're getting and it'll go fairly quick in terms of service. This would have been a great idea if the ice cream board menu matched the actual selection! As far as location, they are 5 stars since the location is on the island. As far as taste, 0 stars. Certainly not my favorite place on the island to get ice cream but it was also not terrible so I am giving it three stars. The ice cream itself was ok - not great but not bad. The employees were rude though and I also have a problem with places making it look like they are more crowded than they really are. What am I talking about??? We had driven by a few times and saw the lines of people put the door so we figured that this was the ice cream place on the island. But when we actually went to visit we figured out pretty quickly what was going on. They have an employee stationed at the door only allowing a few people inside thereby making sure that there is a line out the door. At the time that we went everyone that was in line could have comfortably fit inside the building but they had to have the appearance of a "line" so they keep us outside. Three stars for Ocean Isle Creamery for the entire experience. The shop is clean and the service is average. At only TWO samples per person, you'd think it would be difficult to decide, however their selection is pretty sparse and their variety is very typical. I will say, their Praline ice cream was by far the best I tasted out and voting on that ice cream alone I'd say four stars. However, I also tasted the peach (eh), cookies and cream (lack of cookies and low grade cookies, tasted like they'd been frozen too long), and cookie dough (again, lack of dough and just eh flavoring). I don't want to go to an ice cream store that claims to have homemade ice cream and be less then thrilled by the majority of flavors. The cherry on top of the experience was that the next day we went over to The Breakers Arcade and ordered ice cream (ice cream is an every day beach necessity). The variety of flavors and selection was double what the creamery offers plus the ice cream all around tasted better AND was cheaper. Just stopped in at the creamery for a milkshake and it was definitely not worth it. We got two shakes, and both had so much milk in them that they were like chocolate milk - not shakes. We could not even taste the ice cream, only milk. Neither my husband or I finished ours. They were $6 a piece and a total waste of money. Other than that, the ice cream had no flavor. Earl got the mint chocolate chip, which was heavy of mint syrup, and and had frozen chocolate chips in it. Not impressed. We've always saved ice cream as an extra special treat. We're at the beach, so we've been here twice. They handle the large crowds quickly. Plenty of selections.
