I'm not sure I should tell you about my favorite hole in the wall Chinese food, but here I am, unable to keep a secret. This place has the distinction of not just being my favorite Albany Chinese food, but being my favorite Chinese food pretty much anywhere. The food is fresh, and fast, and always amazing. They have interesting specials all the time. They are run by an adorable couple who have been cooking up quality Chinese food in this area for years. The prices are affordable. If you want a special birthday event you can have them fix up. Multicourse prix fixe for a bunch of friends and it will rival any fancy pants place you could go, for less then 15-20 a head. If you tell them you want some special meal in advance they will make it happen for you. They're amazing. Only negative of note: they don't deliver, and there are maybe two tables so I tend to do take out. read more

This was excellent and authentic Chinese/Cantonese food in Albany! We were driving up to Canada and stopped in Albany for some dinner and stumbled upon Ocean Palace. The Singapore Rice Noodles are so delicious. We also ordered some garlic sauteed veggies and eggplant with garlic sauce. The eggplant was fried perfectly and the garlic sauce is sweet and savory. I met a friend for lunch here and we were very disappointed. The customer service was extremely poor. The woman who took my order did not to seem to understand what I was saying and instead of trying to remedy the situation, she started talking louder and louder to me and it felt that she was yelling at me. I went for lunch and left feeling terrible about the whole exchange. The food was average, but the experience was not good at all. Maybe people have a better experience if they order out? I love this food! Homemade wontons and dishes with amazing chicken, sauce and the GOOD veggies, not just the cheap ones. This is not your typical American Chinese restaurant, but much more authentic. Maybe almost compared to a place in NYC. There are not many tables, so takeout may be required. There is public parking on both sides of this place and on street parking. An absolute Gem. This is the real deal in respect to Chinese food. The owner, Peter, is also a fantastic person. What a great experience all the way around. Hands Down best Chinese "Take-Out" in the city. Hands down. Even though I probably wont ever come here for a sit down meal (it just doesn't have the same atmosphere as Shining Rainbow or Ala Shanghai) doesn't mean this place doesn't have a permanent place in my heart. Everything I have had here from vegetables to chicken to fish has been prepared flawlessly. They have all the classic takeout options and have eccentric specials daily; all reasonably priced. The staff is the friendliest I've encountered in a take-out restaurant and I wish the whole family all the success they deserve. ***Take special note Wonton Soup lovers, they are prepared correctly here, and not giant mouthfuls of soggy dough.*** read more

I was hoping this was the same ocean palace that was at the old location further down central ave. I used to get the duck noodle soup and the plate was massive full of veggies and half of a duck. The new location is fine and the dim sum is very good but it is tiny and is missing the charm. The food is good but more Americanized in my opinion and it looks like a full family affair, as in anyone can come and go out of the kitchen and grab stuff as they please. The kitchen is right there facing the small dining room so it is very noticeable. Ocean palace used to stand out on authenticity and quality, but now they are not much different then other places. I will come back for dim sum but my love affair with their authentic dishes is over. read more

I love this place! They make authentic Cantonese food. I love their shanghai noodle dish. Their beef chow fun is good but sometimes has a burnt taste. Maybe their wok flame is too strong? I also love their standard takeout flare. Chicken with brocolli, shrimp with lobster sauce, fried baby shrimp, and general tsos chicken (which has real peppers!). Never tried their dim sum. Heard good things tho. Tldr Authentic Cantonese food. Excellent standard Chinese takeout flare also. Probably the best in the area. read more

They didn't give me a fortune cookie in my carry out food and their beef with broccoli was not very good, it wasn't terrible but it was a little dry and didn't have much beef. They had a small spot where you could sit to eat in but I took my food for carry out. This place is located on Central Ave and the parking can be difficult. read more

Glad to see that Ocean Palace is once again up and running. The food is excellent! We ordered Hong Kong style steamed pork dumplings, Young Chow fried rice, Orange flavored beef and chicken in garlic sauce. The dumplings were simply to die for! The beef dish was also very good, Although the broccoli was cold, very strange. The chicken was moist and tender, the garlic sauce spicy, but not too. The Young Chow fired rice was not the same as it once was. If it were, this would be a 5 star review. read more

We were way overdue for lunch after going to the dog park. Not having the opportunity to visit Ocean Palace very often, we decided to try to find a parking space and indulge. We have had the food from Ocean Palace before and found it to be authentic instead of the usual Chinese takeout. I am a shrimp fan and thought I'd give some Shrimp and Chinese vegetables a try. WOW - what a surprise, an actual Chinese vegetable - Gailan (Chinese broccoli). I don't recall ever eating the entire entree and almost all the fried rice from any take out - ever. Vegetable Fried Rice had a lovely char on it with no funny yellow color with a fresh taste that you just had to eat one more bite. Yes, I did. Egg rolls come in a pair, but was only able to eat one. More for me tomorrow! Also came with a small soup (got hot and sour) which I of course had no room for. Also tomorrow snack. SO enjoyed the chicken with eggplant. Watched them cut a fresh eggplant as I waited. Everything was fresh and delicious. Too bad there are not other Chinese takeout like this. read more

While in Albany at our last leg of our vacation, we found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to try it since it had good reviews. When we got there we were not impressed in the area since it looked a little seedy. We decided to go ahead anyway since we were there. The place is very small with a few tables. The decor looks like it hasn't been updated in years. It appears to be more of a take out place with all the take out sales made while we were there. The menu is extensive for such a small place. Ocean Palace is hands down the best Chinese food in Albany. And, Ocean Palace likely serves the best salt & pepper squid in NY. Fresh ingredients, reasonable prices, generous portions. What was ordered: 1. Thai style short ribs with fresh mango served on a sizzling platter: the savory sauce from the short rib combine really well with the fresh mango that gets slightly caramelized on the sizzling pan 2. Chicken and black bean sauce: classic authentic Chinese flavor, generous portion of tender all-white meat chicken 3. Salt and pepper squid: please see below as I felt the need to dedicate an entire section to this dish So, how do I begin to describe Ocean Palace's salt and pepper squid? * Remember the scene in Back to the Future Pt. 1 where Marty is playing at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance and he notices that he is starting to fade away and he can see through his hand? And the song "Earth Angel" is playing in the back ground but right when the song gets to the lyrics "the vision of your happiness ", Marty's dad somehow miraculously grows a spine and wins the girl, and Marty is immediately rejuvenated? Remember the goosebumps you got from that scene? * Remember watching The Force Awakens trailer for the first time and right after Supreme Leader Snoke says over a black screen "the dark side...and the light", and BAM all of a sudden you see the Millennium Falcon for the first time and you hear the Star Wars theme? Remember the goosebumps you got from that scene? * Remember Russell Crowe in the Gladiator, right after the Battle of Carthage when he reveals himself to Joaquin Phoenix and says, "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." and Joaquin Phoenix is frozen with fear and has that "deer in the headlights look"? Remember the goosebumps you got from that scene? Combine the three aforementioned goosebump-inducing events and, yeah, that's the kind of feeling you get when you bite into a piece of Ocean Place's salt and pepper squid. I consider myself somewhat of a salt and pepper squid aficionado, and out of all salt and pepper squid I've tasted (and I'm a resident of NYC, so I've sampled plenty of Chinese restaurants in Chinatown /Flushing), no other restaurant has quite perfected the dish as well as Ocean Palace. First, the squid is perfect crispy with a nice flour coating, peppery and lightly salted. You'd be shocked at how many restaurants get this wrong. Too little coating and the squid becomes rubbery (see: Hop Kee, Wo Hop, other Chinese restaurants located on Mott St. in Chinatown). Too much coating and it becomes oily (see: Shanghai Asian Manor in NYC). But somehow, Ocean Place has found THE perfect balance. Second, the veggies. Ocean Palace adds some julienned onions, carrots, and hot peppers to the dish. Simple, right? However, these veggies are perfectly wok roasted and have this delicious smoky flavor which complements the already flawless squid. This is decidedly a departure from the norm where some Chinese restaurants feel the need to drown the squid in a mountain of fried jalapenos. Who would have thought that focusing on the fundamentals was the key to excellence in Chinese cuisine? Well the Chans have done it. 10/10. Would go back. read more

We went in for a quick delicious lunch after reading glowing reviews on YELP. It was neither. I ordered the tripe .... it was just OK, no flavor. Then the hot and sour soup, again a lackluster bowl of watery broth not sour and almost no vegetables. There were no lily blossoms, no mushrooms just 3 slivers of tofu wilted carrot shreds and that was IT. Then my duck came out .... or should I say bones and fat. It looked like it was the part of the wing that has 2 bones with a tiny bit of desiccated meat, coarsely hacked up and put on a small plate. To her credit the woman who was there did subtract it from the bill. The only part of the meal that vaugely resembled what it was supposed to be was the egg roll.Glad we ordered it or we would have gone away hungry. Never again !! read more

For those who know the Albany Chinese food scene, this place is owned and operated by the illustrious Peter Chan, formerly of CCK. Chef Chan is HK native and he excels at Cantonese food. He also does a good job with food from other regions. My favorites include the flounder pieces with salt and pepper, and whole steamed flounder with ginger. His prep of HK style lobster is also very good. If seafood is not your thing, anything with roast pork is a hit. He roasts the whole pig himself, and knows what he is doing. I've also been there with vegetarian friends, and there are plenty of good options for them, too. The lunch specials are a steal of deal, and the more complex dinner options offer a lot of variety. For dinner it can be good to go with a group of 6-8 (reserve the one large table in advance) and order "banquet style". read more
