The Plum Blossom has been a Troy fixture for decades. Same owner and family since it opened. Had lunch here on an early Monday afternoon with my mom. We were given hot tea, water, crunchy noodles and dipping sauces to start. The lunch menu had a variety of choices, including vegan. I ordered a starter of Char Sui. For main entree platters, my mom ordered the pan fried tofu dish while I ordered the cod filet with Thai eggplant. I paid for a different side, thin rice noodles, since I didn't want the rice that came with the platter. Finished our meal with a pistachio layer cake and hand dripped coffee. Everything was enjoyable; well balanced and deliciously seasoned. A wonderful variety of Asian flavors in more traditional dishes. It is ornate, and brought me emotionally back in time. The service is more like the 70s and 80s, before food service became a rush for quick turnover. Been driving by Plum Blossom for many years on drive from NH to NJ and then NH to Schenectady. Certainly eye catching exterior and I was not disappointed when I saw interior. Stopped for lunch and ordered sesame chicken. Tea, water and some snacking noodle with 2 sauces. The wonton soup was excellent with large pillowy wontons. The sesame chicken was right portion and fried chicken pieces were hot and crisp and sauce dark sweet and tangy. Pieces of chicken were not uniform which I liked. Never hear of this restaurant in capital district and popped up on one of my searches. Thought I would go explore it over the weekend. I walked in and the place looked better than what I had anticipated. The middle of the restaurant looks like a court yard with a opera house kind of look. The food was flavorful punched with spices and veggies. I would recommend this spot if you haven't tried this before. I tried the Dragon and Phoenix which is like your surf and turf but with general tso chicken and shrimp. Dinner combination comes with fried rice and egg roll and we got sa cha chicken. Appetizers are reasonable priced amd we tried vegetable roll andSzechuan Toss-Fried Spicy Wonton which were good. Make sure you total your bill as they made an error on mine. There is something about this place - maybe it's the beautiful decor, the family run and friendly service, or the fantastic food that is consistently good over the years. Complementary tea & snacks with hot and sour and wonderfully spicy mustard is offered immediately. I ordered the spicy wontons as an appetizer and that could've been a meal in itself. A little disappointed. First time eating there. My Aunt loves it so I figured I would try it. The beef and broccoli was really good it could have used a little bit more flavor with the sauce. However I ordered to spring rolls and I got these two tiny tiny egg rolls which I didn't order. And I was specifically clear with the server that I wanted the spring rolls. So this place takes me right back to the golden era of the 1990's! It's super traditional looking inside and made me feel like a kid again! So set that aside. The food is only okay. It is exactly the quality of a totally common take out restaurant. Now don't get me wrong, I would go back anyway because the food was by no means bad, if the service was more friendly. The service was cooly polite and very rushed. We ordered the scallion pancakes for an appetizer that we never got and unfortunately my wonton soup was taken right out from under my nose before I had finished it. This is particularly unfortunate because that wonton soup was really tasty. Probably the best part of the meal. Every time I've gone my group has had to wait a bit to be seated - even when the restaurant has very few people in it. It can take a bit for your order to be taken, and it can take a bit of time for it to arrive. All of this is worth it!! They offer hot tea and crunchy fried noodles while you wait, brought out nearly immediately after your order. They keep your water glasses and your teapot full. There is a man working there who is the most ridiculously happy and charming person I've ever met, it makes me smile just to think about his happy face. This is a old established Chinese restaurant with amazing ambience, and character, however, seems to have slipped with its service and food. If you want a tried and true go for the sweet-and-sour soup. Today I have the Kung pow chicken which had an entire green pepper and a few peanuts and was only mildly spicy. This was a combo dinner, and the eggroll was decent fried rice. Select character had difficulty getting servers attention, and it appeared like the owners were chef, servers and hosts. Not that bad, for as bad as some of it was. Beautiful woodwork everywhere, in a place that's remarkably clean. Polite and attentive servers, but the service seemed slow. Our hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour. The scallion pancake was greasy and chewy and tasted like old oil. It had some green flecks. If they had flavour, we couldn't tell over the greasy flavour and texture. The tempura was slightly browned raw batter on raw vegetables. Our main dishes were spectacularly delicious. Absolutely the best Chinese restaurant to dine at in the capital region. The food is authentic and they use only the best ingredients. I highly recommended their sesame chicken, Moo shu shrimp( it is not listed on the menu, but they will make it for you) and their orange beef. My husband loves their beef and mixed vegetables. The staff here are top notch and go out of their way to accommodate you. And I believe it is the prettiest restaurant in the area with their carved wood and marble. I have seen this restaurant receive acolades in many polls. With a number of Chinese restaurants in the tri-city area, we thought we'd give it a try. The outside hides a large beautiful interior. The menu is typical of many take out restaurants. Lunch comes with a soup. SO got wonton soup and I chose the hot and sour. I find soup cab be a good measure of the chef and what you may expect. Hot and sour was different in that the ingredients/vegetables that there were, were sour, no actual sour in the soup. Lunch orders were General Tsao's chicken and Kung Pao shrimp with cashews. The general had no heat (opposite the soup) and the shrimp were tasty as shrimp should be. It was an acceptable lunch but I didn't get the hype I've read. Stopped with my two kids on the way home from Vermont. It was lovely; the food was delicious and the service was great. The owner even helped me carry the leftovers to my car (since I was carrying a baby and a diaper bag.) The interior is beautiful and my son loved the round booth in the corner. read more

It's been a decade since the first and last time I dined at Plum Blossom. Over the years the feeling of disgust has waned and I am now only highly aggravated by my dining experience. Extremely poor service and mediocre food. I recommend you go and ask to be seated as the place is beautiful. You won't get any service for quite some time, so enjoy the interior and leave when you've seen enough. None of the staff will pay any attention to you so it will be a hassle free walk out and you can go and grab some take out. read more

Honestly I wish I was allowed to give 0 stars because that's what this place deserves. Every time I came here they always somehow managed to get my order wrong or not cook the food well enough. It's always too underdone. Also when I've had a problem with something I never felt I was being listened to or heard by the employees. This Chinese restaurant is for sit down or take out. It's located on the outskirts of Troy right on Hoosick Street on the left headed east. The inside is absolutely beautiful with lots of wood working. Check out the few pictures I took of the inside. We ordered off the menu starting with Egg Drop Soup followed by Crab Rangoon's and Vegetable Dumplings. My wife ordered a combination plate with Shrimp, vegetables, fried rice and an egg roll. I decided on trying the Dragon and Phoenix, General Tso's chicken and Shrimp with Vegetables which comes with white rice. Everything arrived hot and flavorful. The waitress was very attentive, checking back with us a few times to ensure we were content. Tea and water glasses were kept full. I personally enjoy a Chinese sit down restaurant over takeout, I feel the food is better tasting and who wants to do dishes! Local institution. Nice interior. Came here for lunch after not being here for many years. It's an old school American Chinese restaurant. When you first sit down they give you the crispy noodles and 2 dipping sauces, the duck sauce, and the hot mustard. This was the way thing were back in the 70's and 80's. I did enjoy the flash back in time. The mustard is really hot and spicy like it should be. Hot tea is also brought to the table. As far as the food goes, I thought the General Tso's had too much breading but at least it tasted fresh. I had a Kung Pao dish that was what you would expect in an American Chinese restaurant. Both were ok. Scallion pancakes were just ok. Lacking the flaking texture and a bit too oily but ok. Don't think I will be returning soon... but if I am in the area and looking for a meal I guess it would be part of the consideration. This place is a hit or miss for me. I've had some great meals here and some not so great. My last visit was a not so great meal. The service was good and the staff there was very friendly. The place has the most beautiful wooden cravings. We were there to meet our daughter's future in-laws, great place for our first time meeting. Everyone loved their meals but I found mine to be bland and needed salt (who adds salt at a Chinese restaurant). I ordered the chicken and mixed vegetables. It came in a white sauce which didn't have any taste, and I was expecting a brown sauce, I also ordered Spring rolls, they were delicious. Oh man, the service here is lacking in a huge way. I walked in at 6:35 on a Friday, without a reservation, so I deserved what was in store for me. They promptly sat us at a corner table in a far, far away land devoid of any waiters. We sat at the table for 15 minutes without anyone coming to our table, or even to the other two tables located near us. I called the restaurant ‍and said hello, we were sat 15 minutes ago, could you please send a server to the table. Sure, no problem. A guy comes and drops off tea and leaves. Ten minutes later I bring my handwritten order to the hosts stand. Come to find out the waiter forgot to bring a cocktail and two appetizers to the table next to ours as well. If a restaurant is so clearly overwhelmed during a Friday dinner rush then don't seat additional people. I'd rather know there is a 30 minute wait to get a table rather than sitting at a table waiting more than 20 minutes to be seen by a waiter. read more

Wow what a surprise. having spent time in China I can say this restaurant not only looks like you stepped into a space in actual China but food was authentic and exceptional.
