Honestly, I was expecting really good ramen because people keep hyping up this place. While yes I was served "ramen" it wasn't in the traditional Japanese style I was expecting. The broth was very heavy and oily like beef bone broth. I did finish my entire bowl because it resembled something my family would make. I just found it surprising that it wasn't tonkotsu. I do wish this place wasn't close by the warehouse area and more accessible. I can imagine that this would be a good place for hangover ramen right after the bar ‍

I took a trip to Albany with my family to visit the Capitol, and we were on the hunt for a good place to eat. A quick Google search for ramen led us to Tanpopo Ramen. Pulling up, I'll admit--I was a bit confused. From the outside, it looked more like an old-school diner than a ramen spot. But at that point, we were committed (and not about to turn back toward NYC), so we decided to give it a shot. I'm really glad we did. The interior is no-frills and a bit tight for a family of five, but the staff made it work and got us settled comfortably. We started with edamame, which was perfectly seasoned, and shrimp and vegetable gyoza that the kids absolutely devoured. I also grabbed a Sapporo to wash it all down--solid start. Then came the main event. We ordered a mix: chicken ramen, beef stew ramen, two tonkotsu with double chashu, and a red curry ramen. The only dish that didn't quite stand out was the chicken ramen--it wasn't bad, just not as flavorful as the others. The tonkotsu ramen? Total hit. Both of my kids demolished their bowls--nothing left behind. My wife went all in on the beef stew ramen and loved it so much it sparked a debate at the table about how it stacks up against some Manhattan spots. And then there was my dish--the red curry ramen. Shoutout to our waitress for the recommendation. It had the perfect balance of salt, savory depth, and heat. The broth was this vibrant, bright red that just looked incredible--and tasted even better. Easily one of the top three ramen bowls I've ever had. I had my doubts walking in, but don't make that mistake. This place is a hidden gem. My only knock on the place is the table size for a family of five. Service was great. Now I need more excuses to come up to Albany just to visit this place!

Excellent!!! Highly recommend a must try spot in Albany!!!! Super deep rich broth and unique flavor for each different ramen soup order on its list.

My husband has been on a major ramen whirlwind. So after a day of errands in the Albany area, this was a great little adventure! Tanpopo definitely has that "diner-with-a-twist" vibe. It's fun how the retro diner car bones are still here- but with a warm and cozy feel. While hubs is a meat eater, he's been enjoying a veggie based broth and veg toppings instead of meat. Could my Vegetarian lifestyle be rubbing off on him? Maybe a little? Our hot Sake kept us toasty on a frigid, Spring Sunday and soon after, hubs indulged on pork gyozas. Unlike an authentic spot in Kingston where the owner uses a veggie-based broth WITH coconut milk to mimic a tonkotsu broth, Tanpopo takes a different approach. Their vegetable broth is clear- lighter, yet still satisfying. We savored a delicious, expertly crafted (not that we're pros) bowl of noodles with flavorful broth and well-balanced toppings. Since it's about an hour from home, Tanpopo may be a go-to spot whenever we're in the area. Service was wonderful from beginning to end. Every detail was handled with care and professionalism from our server. Totally recommend!

Super cute and delicious ramen spot in Albany. Their pork belly buns are amazing! It's roasted off to finish so it's tender and crispy, I could order 5 plates of these and just be happy. I had the Tanpopo spicy ramen which I enjoyed, my friend's favorite is the lemongrass ramen which is not on the menu but you can ask for availability. It's very rich broth and not overwhelmingly lemongrassy. They have the wavy ramen noodles which I love the texture of. Delicious food and great service. We came around two a clock on Saturday and were seated right away, it did get pretty busy after but it came in waves.

Tanpopo has been one of my go-to spots for ramen and bao buns--especially on cold days. I stopped in right at lunch opening and was pleasantly surprised to find it empty (which is rare!). The old train car setup gives it a unique and cozy vibe. I ordered the edamame, hot tea, and tonkotsu ramen. The tea was a little strong but not bitter, and the edamame was served hot and lightly salted--just right. Unfortunately, the ramen didn't hit the mark this time. The broth was a bit bland, and the pork had broken apart and sunk under the broth. Not what I've come to expect from them. That said, I'll definitely be back--just sticking to the curry ramen, which has always been excellent.

Excellent food and wonderful service. Truly enjoyed my time here. This is an iconic place that Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep filmed a scene at for the movie Ironweed

Tanpopo is such a vibe for ramen! The restaurant is out of an old train car with bills that customers can tape around and sign and it's a really cool spot to check out. They have a couple of ramen options to order from. The broth and noodles are pretty good overall. Their gyoza are also yummy. The sake options are also pretty good, I recommend the Hana Awaka if you're looking for something sweet and dessert-like! It's a bit more pricier than some other ramen places I've been to and doesn't top the ramen with as much however. The waitresses are also really nice. Overall it's a fun experience in a good area.

Great food, love the spot. Ramen joint in an old rail car. Tiny spot, but I went on a Wednesday evening. I can imagine this place gets really crowded on the weekends. Now the food: got the best shumei I think I've ever had. Great texture and simple but flavorful. I got the spicy pork belly ramen. Lives up to its name but not too spicy. I may be up for something spicier next time.

I love ramen! And that gross stuff in the package won't do! If I'm not making ramen homemade at home, I am surely at Tanpopo! I haven eaten here many many times, I lose track . Anywho, all the different ramen flavors are great! My personal favorite is the seafood ramen and I always recommend getting the spicy mix to add to your ramen on the side. I love that kick of heat! The duck buns and the pork belly buns are absolutely ridiculous!!! Tis the season for great soup guys! If you have never been, I highly recommend that you go try it. I'm excited to try the new Schenectady location!

Absolutely amazing ramen in a very cool spot. They were packed on a rainy night and while we didn't wait for a table we did wait about an hour for food. This ramen was worth the wait!! Huuuuuge gigantic portions, packed with flavor and plenty of customizable options. I had the curry ramen which was not overly spicy but had a nice kick. My partner had the seafood ramen which was fresh and salty. Noodles perfectly cooked. It's loud inside, but small and cozy so I'd say perfect for a casual meal in a small group or date night! Definitely recommend Tanpopo for the best ramen I've had outside of nyc

Best Ramen in Albany. Looking for ramen? LOOK NO FURTHER. They know how to KISS: Keep It Simple & Sensational! The only food you can order is either apps or ramen, and they both extremely well. Full-bodied broth, and high quality meats and veggies, and an orchestra of of smell and taste to leave you speechless. Quite literally, it is fairly quiet in the restaurant because of how fully immersed people are with the dishes. And the staff is great happy bunch, eager to help you get cozy and make the right choices. It is a small spot so be prepared to wait if you want a booth, and don't park in the back lot! But there's free parking across the street after 6 pm.

This restaurant is truly unique housed inside of a retired train car. The interior has a vintage look with customer one dollar bills adorning the walls. The day we stopped for lunch was high winds and February temps so bundle up. The freezing breeze will chill the side of your body should you choose to sit in a booth next to window. The service during lunch started strong then delayed as the server appeared to be solo and ending the meal was drawn out. None the less she was friendly and our food was prompt. I tried a green tea which was not steaming hot when served. My friend ordered a Sapporo draft beer and was served a Sloop Juice Bomb in error which the server quickly remedied. My favorite food item was the fried dumpling. Four plump savory port dumplings served with green onion and a soy. The noodle soups were not thrilling for me or my date. My tonkatsu broth did not present any notable flavors but the Tanpopo Spicy delivered. My noodles had a more chalky flavor and I had an abundance of scallions, where my date hardly had any in his bowl. I have eaten ramen at many capital district spots so I cannot claim I would hunt for parking and make the special trip to Tanpopo Albany. But I did get to enjoy a warm meal on a freezing winter day, experience friendly service and eat local.

It's a Taiwan-Asian fusion-inspired fast food chain but I was down for this. It's been more than a year since my last meal here. I don't know if they changed their menu but I experienced a bit of a relearning curve in ordering ramen at the front counter. First, I needed to pick a broth. I chose Tonkotsu ramen, which is ramen in Japanese pork bone broth. Then, I needed to pick a protein which was shrimp and I asked for the meal to be extra spicy. It only took a few minutes. I could hear it being prepared in the kitchen. The young woman at the register was helpful and patient as I made my selection. Definitely convenient. The ramen was good. I got a lot of shrimp and I liked the little slices of fish cake with pink flower designs. The decor has undergone slight changes since I last visited. It seems there are better displays and more varieties of merch. It's still very clean, bright and cheerful. There are still plenty of young customers. Given its close proximity to SUNY Albany that should be no surprise. I liked the playlist, too. R & B and Hip Hop played in the background. Loud enough so that you could definitely hear it but low enough so that students who were dining--some in groups-- could comfortably hold conversations. I didn't plan to come here but my stomach growled. It was a nice, relaxing lunch that hit the spot.

We ordered our dishes with two proteins- there was more cucumber than fish! I bring it up because I could actually count the 3 pieces of tuna and salmon in my bowl. Service was great, but the presentation and the quality of food (especially for the money) is not worth it. Very disappointed.

I had the "Crispy chicken in sweet chili sauce" and my wife had the "Mango chicken" (which they accidently made as mango shrimp but quickly corrected). The presentation, as is the rest of the restaurant, is modern. Large white plates, rice in a separate bowl, and absolutely no garnishment on the plate. I enjoyed my chicken and it was sweet and lightly spicy. It had an nice flavor I couldn't place... perhaps their brand of chili sauce.... and the chicken was crispy. My wife's mango chicken was a let down. The mango pieces tasted okay (like canned mango), but the chicken had an unusual flavor/sauce that was a bit unpleasant. She said portions of her chicken were cold and also not crispy, which was also a bummer. The rice was good, and in fact better than some I get at more expensive restaurants. (not too sure) The tofu soup I got was mild-lightly spicy and gosh it was the spiciest soup I've ever gotten and I usually eat this and other spicy foods perfectly fine! Wasn't the best for me. Alternatively the beef soup felt a bit bland but my friend liked it. Main complaint is not much beef in the soup and it tasted very tough. alternatively not much seafood either, just tiny small bits of cheap shrimps which were a bummer. Only good thing was the decent price and decent free side dishes (not many) of which only broccoli tasted good. Food took forever to come so side dishes were a life saver although they also were never refilled which at traditional places they are. Main thing: the service was quite bad... from the moment we walked in, we didn't feel welcome as no one welcomed us, dirty tables were everywhere (like in those video games you play to clean up), and we waited awhile at the counter looking at menus until someone greeted us with an attitude yelling that counter is only for to-go and we should've just sat down if we're dining in... she huffed and sat us down, surrounded by the dirty tables. We asked if we could sit elsewhere but as big as the restaurant was, she still said half of it was closed for dinner (I know other places do the same but they were kind enough to let us sit in that area when requested) and the reason why this time, was because we were literally sitting surrounded by dirty dishes all around us - which they never cleaned up the entire hour we dined here! Very unpleasant view-never have I ever! Even our current table was sticky. And the food and service took forever. She seemed very annoyed when we ordered and whenever we asked for water or refill side dishes and gave attitude like we obviously need to wait for her to appear and be free to even ask which she was rarely seen. I never saw her treat other customers like the same way she treated us, for them, she was very patient and kind and offered menu options and even personal talk. Seems like she doesn't like tourists, just regulars. Anyways she was rarely seen throughout the meal and so I just sucked up the not so good food and we finished and took awhile to get the check. That was the only point in the interaction she seemed to be present in the restaurant. Other times she was nowhere to be seen. When paying, she loudly exclaimed what do you want to tip? In an attitude saying that, we had to tip, and it had to be a sufficient amount otherwise she'd be upset - which she was because service was not good. Even when we left and said bye, she gave us no word back and just another one of those scowled looks. Only one lady working the front and she was barely present and not pleasant. Overall food really isn't bad but it isn't amazing either. If this cuisine is what you're craving go for it, it's fairly priced. I would support a small business. But don't expect a clean restaurant or friendly service - unless youre a regular or fits the server preferred demographic. Not the best experience for me. Whole heartedly believe if service was better this could be a solid place!

I may be part of the Asian club but I'm not a part of this particular inner circle. Being Filipino…read more(or being human, for that matter), I tend to compare and contrast cuisines based on my own experience. With several Asian cuisines, rice seems to be the preferred carb. Korean black rice differs primarily in appearance - purple hue due to the mix of black and white rice. Gimbap (Kimbap) - is often described as Korean sushi. In doing some research, there's a distinct difference between the two. The seasonings used to flavor the steamed rice are salt and sesame oil. They are usually stuffed with cooked protein (beef, pork, tofu, fishcake) and pickled vegetables. They seem to be a larger diameter than maki sushi as well. Good? You betcha. Tonkatsu lunch is a favorite....think German pork schnitzel over black rice. The sauce seems to be Tteokbokki (glutinous rice cake) derived - sweet and slightly spiced. There are usually banchan (side dishes) accompanying the meal: kimchi, cucumber pickle, daikon, and eomuk (fish cake). They provide added contrast to the meal. The service has always been efficient and cordial every time I've picked up my order here.
